    Simply my all time favourite single player game, although it feels more like reading a book than actually playing. A game where dialogues delve into profound philosophical questions, creating a unique RPG experience. Characters aren't just NPCs, they're vessels of introspection. Gameplay serves as a canvas for thought-provoking narratives.

    Replayability is the major issue for me with games. Unfortunately this game does not have a great deal of it and I can't give it a 10, but it's still a very close run thing. Astounding. Unforgettable. Hypnotic. Exhilarating. The amnesiac storyline sounds cliched but this amnesiac storyline is so different, so well told, so deeply described that the game is more than forgiven for it. There are not many joinable NPCs, one of them is hard to find and another does not appear until near the end. But these NPCs have, individually, more personality than shelfloads of games than I could mention, so again, the game is more than forgiven. There are more than a few bugs. But this game is so engrossing that you don't really care. Game absolved again. From the constant thud thud in the Lower Ward to the very inspiring fighting music in Curst, the sounds in this game make it unforgettably atmospheric. This game does not have many areas, does not last very long and has been accused of having an unsatisfactory ending. But no other game has such a plethora of memorable characters, stimulating dialogues, great music, spell visuals and moments of great hilarity in such a short space of time. It just shows what can happen when people's motivation is belief and pride in what they are doing and a love for it too, as opposed to purely making money. The quest to find a certain NPC is probably the most fulfilling quest I've ever done. As far as I know, there are two valid endings which occur about half way towards the accepted ending (and one other a lot closer). I can think of no other game which dares to do that.     Finally played and finished this classic. If you are familiar with the old game books in which "you are the hero", then this game will give you a similar feeling. You will read. A lot. The novel based on the computer text is more than 400 pages. Thankfully the writing is very good and will keep you interested until the end. Combat is rudimentary, but is not the main aspect here. To be fair this could be my expectation as I only bought this because of all the praise I heard in all the years. Lets start at the beginning: It is a D&SDIt has a great refreshing story, likable characters and the setting is unique. On the negative side the gameplay is not that great, there are some bugs and it is not “The best RPG of all times” or “Baldurs Gate 2 killer” many claimed. To be fair this could be my expectation as I only bought this because of all the praise I heard in all the years. Lets start at the beginning: It is a D&SD game set in the Planescape realm in the city of Sigil. The setting is unique as the realm is a wheel with an infinite spire in the middle where on top of is the city of Sigil. It is the realm of the gods, mythical creatures and beings not or rarely seen in the material realms. Basically here you have all the secrets unveiled that people in the material plane have. For example you know that the afterlife, different worlds / dimensions, gods, demons and devils exist and can even possibly meet them even if it is unlikely for the higher ones. Each aliment has a layer and those are connected. Sigil is a mystery packed in mysteries. Like I said it is set on an infinite spire but it is also called the city of doors as there are portals everywhere. Some are open all the time, some are hidden and some require to know what to do to open them. Sigil is also the one place the gods cant enter and not because of lack of trying as a place with doors to all place is a source of unimaginable power. The ruler is the mysterious Lady of Pain which does not interact and you should not worship as goddess as it will get you killed. An advice for her is don't get involved and run as fast as you could if you can spot her in the distance. The protagonist is called “The Nameless One” as he has amnesia when he awakes in the mortuary. He has some clues tattooed on his skin, a diary and a talking skull as companion. His specialty is that he cant die or better said he stays not dead. Each time he gets killed he reawakens later on. This adds to the mystery. His journey is remarkable and in the story I see why people praise it. It is as refreshing as good. The characters are also fascinating and I like the party with Morte, Dak’kon, Annah, Ignus, Vhalior, Nordom and Fall from Grace. Like I said in the regard of the story, characters and setting it is as good as people say. The gameplay is a different thing. The gameplay mechanics are not as polished and the battles feel clunky for me. It is the kind of “I don't want the battles just continue the story” game for me. Luckily you can avoid many confrontations and the story, characters and setting are a good masquerade for this problem. Sadly I had some minor and a critical buck. Only by luck I was able to continue the story as I was trapped in a situation where my game crashed every time. Because there was another solution I could continue but it was harsh and I had to use guides to find the way out. Also it is sadly not as good overall package as Baldurs Gate 2 which I see as superior game. To be fair again I can see this game surpass it or better said see why others claim this to be better. The graphics were good for its time but aged a bit. Be warned it is a dark and sometimes grim setting that is not for everyone. I say it creates a good atmosphere. The soundtrack helps a lot to enhance it. It is sneakingly good. Overall I say it is a must play game but also not for everyone if this makes sense for you. I can see why people praise the game but I cant fully agree. I give a 7/10 where I subtracted a point for the serious bug mentioned above.… Expand

    I can't say I have played every game but I've spent most of my life playing since the age of two using different platforms. I'm 25 now and this is the only game that made me feel good and satisfied in a deeper level through the whole experience. My only complaint about the game is that the story is too linear.     However, the heavy orientation on story and dialogues makes the game unbalanced, because characters focusing primarily on Intelligence and Wisdom have a significant advantage over other characters focused on, for example, Strength and Constitution. Combat, whilst not bad, is also underdeveloped.

    I love Baldurs Gate 2, Morrowind, Fallout and all the other classic RPGs and dont like the action action "RPG"s from today...I was very interesting and motivated for PS:T, but I get dissapointed.     Funny thing, that there can be a game that may have faults, yes, but you do not care, for the core is so strong, the writing so inspired and full of twists, that none of the minuses even matter, because you are completely invested in the story and the characters. And it detracts from experiencing one of the best stories in gaming. I even read the book based on the dialogue. There are even 3 versions of a book based on this. So yeah in it for the story.

    The world view of this game is crazy. There is more depth of story than any game I've ever played. It feels like I read a novel book. The battle is really trashy, but except for that, I am proud of immense immersion.

    I've gotten everyone I can to play this game by describing it to them as "The best game you'll ever read or the best book you'll ever play." Almost two decades later and so far every single one that gave it a try has agreed. I remain confident that fact will never change as long as I live.

    Je me rappelle y avoir joué à l'époque mais pas beaucoup... il faut dire que j'étais encore sur les Fallout (surtout le 2) sorti un an avant et qu'à côté, ce Torment m'est apparu assez vite comme un tourment que j'ai rapidement remisé à la remise.

    Or, il se trouve que bien souvent la première impression est la bonne -et qu'elle le reste même quand on y revient. Heureusement, pour y    Je me rappelle y avoir joué à l'époque mais pas beaucoup... il faut dire que j'étais encore sur les Fallout (surtout le 2) sorti un an avant et qu'à côté, ce Torment m'est apparu assez vite comme un tourment que j'ai rapidement remisé à la remise.

    Or, il se trouve que bien souvent la première impression est la bonne -et qu'elle le reste même quand on y revient. Heureusement, pour y revenir, j'ai toujours ma config sous Windows XP avec le dual core, car Torment ne marche pas sous Windows 7. Et en plus, il n'aime pas ma 6770 puisque l'accélération 3D produit des artéfacts épouvantables ; qu'à cela ne tienne, je joue sans accélération et supporte les dégradés tramés -affreux- d'un jeu qui de toute façon... supporte mal le poids des ans.

    Premier constat, il s'agit d'un monde bizarre et certainement dépaysant, souvent bavard : on est plongé dans une "drôle" d'ambiance avec plus de questions que de réponses mais on se retrouve invariablement comme le héros amnésique, c'est-à-dire complètement paumé. Le fait qu'on soit... soit-disant "immortel" -mais qu'on meurt quand même pour ressusciter à des endroits précis- n'est pas vraiment un avantage : entre ça et le chargement de la sauvegarde précédente, je vois pas la différence ni l'intérêt, surtout qu'on peut évidemment sauver quand on veut !

    Le nombre élevé de dialogues ne nous épargne pas les combats, décidément très nombreux : pour un jeu aussi bavard, c'est quand même ballot. En fait, rapidement, tout le monde veut vous tuer ou presque. Et si on ne veut pas vous tuer, on vous demande d'aller dans des endroits où des créatures veulent vous tuer, pas parlementer ni palabrer.

    Ainsi, expérimenter ce jeu et le comparer avec sa suite spirituelle -ou plutôt son vague héritier en fait- que constitue l'excellent Torment Tides of Numénéra est particulièrement cruel pour Planescape Torment : le monde de Tides of Numénéra est non seulement aussi dépaysant -sinon plus- mais aussi très bien expliqué et ne nous impose qu'un dixième de tous ces combats pourris obligatoires. Et encore !

    En outre, le Numénéra jouit d'un excellent système au tour par tour au lieu du temps réel pausé assez foireux de Planescape Torment dont l'interface générale est d'ailleurs assez mal foutue. Les déplacements et la carte sont particulièrement laborieux, de même que les quêtes elles-mêmes dont une bonne partie sont du pur Fedex plus ou moins déguisé.

    On tombe également sur des bugs assez édifiants comme cette taverne que je visite une première fois pour y revenir quelque temps plus tard... Diantre, tous les clients m'attaquent alors à vue sans sommation... et sans explication ! putain, le jeu bavard ne veut plus me parler, il veut juste me zigouiller en fait.

    Tout cela fait... qu'en fait, il n'y a pas grand-chose à tirer de ce Torment, rien pour ainsi dire : la lourdeur omniprésente de l'interface, le monde abscons, l'histoire peu motivante, le bavardage inutile et les combats incessants ont raison de n'importe qui. Si vous voulez faire un Torment, ne vous trompez pas, faites celui d'Inxile Entertainment, délicieusement rétro mais pas trop et beaucoup plus, immensément plus intéressant et fascinant.    … Expand

    Though combat isn't the focus of the game, with peaceful ways out of most situations, the combat is still great. Simple as far as CRPGs go, making it a great first CRPG for beginners, there are 3 classes you can play as, each with a lot of depth and a unique way of playing. Each experience is fun, to be sure, and it encourages replays of the game, but first time players should definitely play as a Mage with max Int and Wis to get the most out of the game their first time.

    Graphics and sound hold up fine, even today. They get the job done and they do it well, and they have a certain charm to them that will be memorable for a long time to come.

    Atmosphere is also top notch. No game, save for Dark Souls, has ever made me feel like I was really in an alien and strange world to this extent before, not even Morrowind. The world is also incredibly well designed, faithfully adapting the incredible Planescape D&D setting to a video game.

    Although a lot of content was unfortunately cut, particularly in the later areas, there is still a tremendous amount of things to do. This is where the real replay value comes: There are tons, and I do mean TONS, of meaningful choices to make, with consequences often follow you into the late game. There are also no quest markers to hold your hand, and this trust of the player's ability to figure out what to do will be very refreshing for new players and returning players alike.

    All in all, Planescape is a masterpiece of a game, a must play for anyone who likes real RPGs or thinks they might. For new players, once you get past the isometric view and a few cheesy things here and there you will find this game just as enjoyable as it was 20 years ago. Highly recommended, especially as a first CRPG.    … Expand

    This game is seriously awesome. It has probably the best story i've ever seen in a game, which is partly due to the fact that the hero isnt your typical make the sun shine and everyone hold hands and sing at the end type of guy. If you're looking for an rpg with some originality, great humor, and one hell of a story, pick this up.

    For a quick intro, the plane of existence known as Sigil floats above a pillar in what is apparently a giant fog. There are no suns, moons or anything at all we would consider normal, but instead portals all over the place to all the other planes of existence. As you can imagine, Sigil is quite the place.
    And the main character, the Nameless One, is no less strange, being among other things immortal, covered in scars and tattooed messages to himself from his last existence. He is frequently afflicted by post-reanimation amnesia you see, so post-it notes to oneself from past lives is apparently a good idea. Yet he is perfectly humdrum and normal compared to some of the other NPCs he will be recruiting. Morte is a flying skull and the early bodyguard of the main character while Ignus is a pyromaniac wizard who is illuminating and heating a local pub by way of having been turned into a portal to the fiery realms as punishment for his crimes. And there are several more weirdos to recruit as well. With this motley flange of grotesques the protagonist must find a way to discover his past and thereby his true nature. It is just all wonderfully odd and nothing like it has been made before or since.

    Pros:
    - Story telling. A 1000 page classic fantasy novel made interactive.
    - Setting. 100% original in the computer medium.
    - Graphics and sound. Although dated, both still do an admirable job of setting the tone and creating the appropriate atmosphere.
    - Character development. All the NPCs in the game are carefully scripted, with virtually endless interactions available for the player. The same conversation will change as your intelligence and charisma increases etc. If there are any holes or inconsistencies in the swarm of dialogue trees in this game, I have not found them. But above all the playable NPCs are astonishingly well written, each with his or her own agenda, abilities and potential.
    - Interface. Nice and clean, plus less heavy on the AD&D fanaticism. Combat is not the main focus of this game and it shows everywhere.
    - Role playing. Unlike the other Infinity games produced by Black Isle, Torment is a true role playing game. For the most part you are free to choose whether to fight your way through something, talk your way through something or sneak past it. Only in rare situations are you really forced by the game into one course of action or the other. Instead exploring each location, each dialogue and each object carefully is usually the best way forward. It is almost closer to being a point&click than a CRPG sometimes.

    Cons:
    - Combat. The main negative in this game but something that must be mentioned because of just how bad it actually is. If you are expecting the same stuff as in the original Baldur's Gate you will be highly disappointed. Animations are clunky, collision detection is appalling, path finding nonexistent, the actual combat simplistic and enemies very unimaginative, both in design and behavior. On my last playthrough the main character also absolutely refused to properly animate any movement to the right. Instead he would walk backwards every time I moved to the right, and even turn his back to enemies if they were on his right side while hacking at them in the wrong direction. It is all just absolutely horrible, so do not buy this game if you're only interested in exciting combat and crisp character controls.
    - Limited/weird/useless loot. Not as big of a problem and logical enough considering that Torment is not primarily a combat oriented RPG. But you will find lots and lots of useless trash to fill your inventory and lots and lots of weird things you're not going to know what to do with. Some of the loot is really cool, like the Nameless One being able to equip different eyeballs and Morte (the floating head) different teeth with which to bite the enemies. There are also tattoos, ear rings and of course more normal things like weapons. But it is all fairly perfunctory and very unlikely to excite anybody.
    - Plenty of reading required. Not a problem for me because I grew up before the internet burned all the books. But for the smartphone troglodytes it might be challenging.    … Expand

Yes, other games have improved on its flaws ever since, because it does have flaws (otherwise I would rate it at 10,) but it was the game changer when it was released and, being one of the very few games I replay once in a while, it is still more enjoyable than 90% of whatever has been released since.

    First, and not foremost, the writing is simply superb. I have been playing Dungeons & Dragons since the 70s (yes, even old farts can enjoy video games,) and if there ever was one universe that left me completely indifferent in AD&D, that was the Planescape universe, which on paper sounded like the epitome of what I would dislike. PS Torment brilliantly showed me an example of what terrific atmosphere I could extract from this very unusual setting.

    More relevantly, because not based on P&P experience but compared to the computer games of the time, Torment was the first RPG that made it worth playing a wise or charismatic character. Before that, every RPG expected you to play a physical character, i.e., a warrior with high Strength and Endurance. Until then, nobody knew what to do with other traits.

    Maybe it sounds like I'm saying it was the best RPG and that the rating is dated. Well, there might be some truth in it, and I reply it still is a valid rating on that sole basis, but you know what ? It hasn't changed that much. Take the modern Fallout franchise, pretty good games if you ask me, but all they do is reverse the trend. In Fallout 3 or NV, or (outside of Fallout) Wasteland 2, or whatever, the stat you really want to raise is your Intelligence if you care about numbers and optimising your build. That's nice and all, but if 1 stat is more important than the others, at the end of the day, this is what you had before PS Torment. So yes, even by today's standards, the stats mechanics are seldom matched. I have played Torment as a stupid barbarian, and it still was great fun. Very few games have pushed that envelope since then.

    Okay, so groundbreaking mechanics, broadened play styles and terrific writing. That should be enough, right ? But don't forget the interface of the IE engine. That interface was one of the best at the time, and still stands the test of time. It is the model that has been built upon. RPGs felt so clunky before. Take the main competition of the day, Fallout and its sequel. True, they are in any way as creative and enthralling as Torment, but what good is it when their interface is so hopelessly bad that playing them becomes a chore ? You do need both to reach greatness, and PS Torment did have both. Still has, seriously. Play it today, it didn't get old.

    Now let's spend a minute with the real competition, Baldur's Gate, which also aged very well (At least BG2. BG1 isn't bad but is quite boring if you ask me.) BG improved on the companions. It also introduced romances, which are just fluff to me, but important for many players. That's it. Torment has the best story and protagonist by far. Also less cosmetic the choices. Also just plain awesome. I'm being pedantic anyway: if you like any one of the IE engine games, try all of them.

    Very unusual that I spend so much time on a game's qualities, when flaws are so much easier to point at. All right, here is one, common to all IE games: combat isn't great, and comes in nonsensical quantities. Actually, today's games still do that, which means that someone, either players or devs, expect it. Anyway, few battles are memorable. On the other hand, many tactics are completely valid, even cheesy ones, so there is still a lot of fun to be had there.

Now its more than 15 years old but the excellent writing contained in this game still can captivate players today. I'm wishing this game HD remake or something. of course you can play it with mods widescreen bug fixes etc... all good. But this game deserve overhaul. I kinda want to say of any book I have ever read as well but it was interactive so I guess it just doesn't fall into the category though it borderlines it as well. The combat is even somewhat unnecessary and yet it still has all the character building available should you choose to go that route.     I played Baldur´s Gate when it was delivered, and I enjoyed it very much. I tried Planescape Torment (a friend had it) in 2000, and due to the complex english, I played only few hours. The last year I decided to give it a new oportunity thank to a traduction to spanish done by Clan Dlan.

    I only can say that it is the best game that I have played, the story, the party, the conversations,    I played Baldur´s Gate when it was delivered, and I enjoyed it very much. I tried Planescape Torment (a friend had it) in 2000, and due to the complex english, I played only few hours. The last year I decided to give it a new oportunity thank to a traduction to spanish done by Clan Dlan.

    For me, as a gamer and a bookworm at the same time, playing this game was a revelation. Up to the point of The Witcher 3 release, there was no game that was able to tell me a story that immersive, touching and interesting at the same time. Story-wise, this is my all time favorite, maybe ex aequo with The Witcher 3 at the moment.

    Probably the best RPG ever made. This game is unique, quality of story, comrades and world creation is legendary. This is the game to which all true RPG (no hack&slashes, or single player mmo games like Skyrim) are compared. If you tell that you love RPG and didn't here of it, then you know nothing.

    This is true cRPG. In my books, the best one of perhaps 10 games that deserve the name. Oh, and if you would like to play it on modern machine, do yourself a favor and follow a modding guide on GOG.

    Honestly, I have yet to find a game that does what Planescape Torment did better. And it's been almost 20 years of searching. It will probably never happen,but if that day comes, it will be glorious.

    It is the first true epic game and an instant classic. But it is not without its flaws.
    First of all, it has way too many fedex type quests. It is too boring. That's -0.5.
    And then its combat is royally broken. So that's another -0.5.

    But then again, as I say again, it's the first true epic game, so I give it +1 bonus, that it's 10.

    This game has among the best story/setting among video games. There's a great amount of attention given to setting details, and strong characterization from all of the party NPCs. Not everything gets explained to you all the time, and it leaves you with the feeling that you're one person in a larger world that's moving along with or without you.

    The downsides of the game are that, considering that the game is largely about dialog options and how you talk to people and so forth, the game itself won't tell you most of the time when your stats have given you a special dialog option, or your lack of stats have prevented you from picking an option. You have to read a guide to know any of that. Special dialog options being labeled didn't really become popular until some later RPGs that came after this one.

    Also, the game is an Infinity Engine game, so naturally you have to vaguely understand the 2nd edition ADnD rules to get what's going on some of the time (same as Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale). Ehhhh. I know how the combat system works from playing the table-top game and Baldur's Gate, so it doesn't bother me too much, but I could easily see how it might hold back someone who was otherwise unfamiliar with it and just wanted to play an RPG with a strong story element.

    If you like RPGs that go in the direction of grinding for levels and stat building and so on, then this game isn't gonna be your thing. A few fights are hard, but most of the time if you just fight things that show up then you can just get through everything that's a fight without much trouble. The game doesn't even have much in the way of fights compared to most other RPGs. There's a lot of talking and doing stuff "in town" instead of "in dungeons".

    If you like character based RPGs with lots of story, this game is exactly what you're looking for. A party full of interesting characters, and nice setting and quests that are a little unusual for fantasy, but not so unusual that you can't follow along with what's happening.    … Expand

While I spent countless hours playing the game, trying to make a better world for the people in it, I was distraught at the ending.     If you said this is the best game ever made, I would not argue with you. It is hard to name a better game. This game reminds us of a time when developers cared about games like they were works of art (now, they make games designed to extract money by microtransactions and DLC). Play this game.

    Best RPG! It has very deep story and characters, intresting gameplay. Sad, that today RPG like that a very rare (Wither 1-2). Bad that this setting is closed.

    PST was way ahead of its time, and it shows in every aspect of the game. The story is one of the best I've ever experienced in any game, ever. To think you wake up in a morgue not knowing who you are or how you got there is creepy and intriguing. Then little by little, you have to piece the puzzle together. This game will make you laugh, make you cry and maybe even give you nightmares. It's that good.

    Despite there is just TNO (the nameless one) as the main protagonist, the game has a lot of replay value. This is mostly due to the multiple ways in which you can complete quests, how you treat people through dialogue, and of course the alignment modifier. You can be good, but treat enough people poorly, and you could end up chaotic or even evil. TNO starts as a fighter, but you have choices later to become a mage or a thief, and even switch back and forth as much as you wish (not recommended). There are also factions you can join, tattoos, romance, the list goes on and on. Probably the greatest part of PST is TNO cannot die. He's immortal. Oh sure, he can still be killed, but the final death can never take him. That's a huge plus in my book. No more loading a saved game just because your character got whacked.

    A word of warning however... The game is very dialogue intensive. This may be the reason some don't like it, but its necessary for the story. PST is a game to take your time with and not rush. If you do, you'll miss out on a lot. Talk to everyone, search every nook and cranny, be patient and have fun. 10/10.    … Expand

    Chances are you didn't land on the page of Torment Planescape by coincidence, not in 2013. And you probably know what kind of game type it is. So just try this game.

    And good news if you like it, a new Torment game got funded and is under development^^

    This game is fun but I have never been able to get into it like I had hoped. The characters are great and the story is good, but the controls and combat are slightly frustrating.

You're given a blank slate and are free to develop them however you wish, with your choices in game actually mattering, starting with your basic stats. In the other infinite engine games, there's few minimum stat requirements for dialog or quest options, making mental stats largely a waste, while physical stats, even for casters are usually the best stats. Not so in Torment....every action you take generally has some degree of minimum requirement involved. While a combat focused character can beat the game, they will have a DRAMATICALLY different experience from a more cerebral character would. This is actually largely a part of the setting. In the outer planes, reality is more malleable then on more stabilized prime worlds, allowing things as simple as believing in something enough (or enough people believing in it) to make it happen. This lends itself to a more thought provocting story. Though I will go ahead and acknowledge that the game play might not be for everyone. If you're more interested in combat or dungeon crawling, Baldur's Gate (equal balance on story and combat) or Icewind Dale (Dungeon Crawler with minimal story) might be more up your alley. However if a quality roleplaying experience is what you want, Torment does it best. There are actually very few games that can even rival it in those terms (mostly just Fallout 1 and 2, which are very similar in quality, though using a different overall system).… Expand

    Brought to my attention by PC Gamer, I do not regret at all buying it. The story in depth and expansive, and is truly choice oriented. The art style and sprite based animations fills me with nostalgia. I am playing it for the first time, 14 years after its release, and it seems to have aged very well. THE best top down RPG ever made, and argueably one of the best games ever made.

    One of the best isometric RPGs out there. Unique story, characters and sub-plots, and plenty of stuff to explore, and NPCs to converse with, each with interesting stories of their own, which only adds to the twists and turns of the overall story. A must have, for any gamer that likes the Infinity Engine games.

    This game is a masterpiece. One of the best CRPGs of all time (if not the best). The setting is very original. The story is just great. All the characters are memorable and unique. The quests are good as well. The game is still awesome since it came out in 1999, every new walkthrough opens some new details about the story. So if you are into CRPGs you MUST play this!

    Along with Baldurs Gate 2, this is the pinnacle of cRPGs. Better story than BG2 but less combat/exploration. All time classic. As i said in BG2, wish they still made games like this...

    It's a role-playing game based on Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Ed., in the Planescape setting (which WotC later abandoned), but the producers intentionally set out to break every role playing game cliche in the book. Stay your hand, talk to people, even creatures you'd in other games kill without a second's hesitation - in *this* game it might be a lost friend with clues to your past.

    Planescape: Torment is something as unusual in gaming as a tragedy: you guide a small band of remarkable but ragged and broken individuals in the hard and unforgiving Planes, you watch friendship and love grow, but as the iron logic of the story unfolds you, the player, soon realize that there can be no happy end to this tale. However, while tragedies don't have happy endings, they do pack massive emotional punch and grant the viewer catharsis - and Planescape: Torment is an oh-so-very good tragedy.

    Some don't like the slow pace, the bizarre setting, the reams of text or the clunky combat, but if you're lucky and can immerse yourself in this game, then you're in for an experience which will stay with you for the rest of your life.    … Expand

    They just dont make games like this anymore. It has the BEST story in a videogame of all times. And what makes this game the best is that it is the only one where choice does matter. In other games the biggest choice you have to make is generally being good or evil which is extremly predictable. Here it takes a whole new spin. If you have strength you can intimidate people, if you are dexterous you might catch a npc pickpocketing you, there are also endless options available trough intelligence, wisdom or charisma. No more dump stats as in Baldurs Gate. I am playing baldurs gate 2 now and while it is a great game and the combat aspect is better than planescape is lacks that thrill of the story and the choice.

    is it me or is the combat in this game horrible...I heard this has an amazing story line but i just couldnt get past the clunky combat...characters move so awkwardly, you are fighting enemy and you arent even hitting it and it is somehow dying. I played Baldurs Gate II, trying some of these older D and D games and prefer that one over this one.     "What can change the nature of a man?" That's the question the protagonist must ultimately answer. Thus begins a journey into the strange, profound, and heart-wrenching. I played this as a teenager and the story still haunts me to this day. If someone makes a sequel, I sincerely hope they will treat it with the utmost respect as homage to the original.

I can easily say this the best story in video games i have experienced and it even matches up to some pretty great stories in famous books. With memorable companions,intriguing plot, believable n fully fleshed NPCs and an amazing protagonist, this is a epic story for the ages.     One of my all time favorites, if you want a unique RPG with a great story, this is for you. The protagonist is unforgettable , the NPCs are some of the best of all time (up there with BG/BG2), and the environment is amazing. The graphics are dated even with recent patches to increase the resolution, but it's absolutely worth playing.

    I still look back on my time with this game as my happiest gaming moments in the era after I was old enough to not like everything. This game changed my mental landscape and the way my imagination works. I want to get addicted to whatever the developers were on.

    I played this Game in the year 2012. This is game is amazing. If i should rate this game on release date it would be a 11 but now im giving it a 10. if you like rpgs with cool characters, a very nice story and your focus is not on combat. dude GET THIS!!

    I've never seen another game like this after I first played it. The closet I ever got was Fate Stay/Night and other Japanese visual novels with English subtitles.

    The story, as described by others, is phenomenal. The characters are bonded to the protagonist, and thus to the player. The graphics in a lot of ways is aesthetically more pleasing than Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights. You can see a lot of details and each character has a large enough sprite slot that the animation is smooth and the combat actions are true. In BG, half of your characters look the same and have no "artistic identity". But here, there is a pure difference between all the NPCs and the main protagonist.    … Expand

    Torment boasts a thoroughly enjoyable story line, and I can pretty much guarantee you won't be guessing how it all ends up with any degree of accuracy. This game has very few weaknesses, and predictability is certainly not one of them!
