From a town where at first I didn't know what to do, how to survive in these bleak environments and who to trust, it turned into a home in which I breathed and made difficult choices, sometimes surprised and sometimes scared. it was a game with an incredibly wide story that definitely needed to be played over and over again. I started looking for similar ones.

Example: the first game day, Artemy Burakh returns to his hometown, where events will take place in the future. In the course of the passage, the main difficulty for the player is the lack of consumables, food, water and healing, however, the methods of obtaining them are very simple - there are groceries with food on the other side, there are sources for drinking throughout the city, many characters are open for trade, but even then the game quite difficult if you pass it at the canonical difficulty level (I do not advise below in any case). With advancement, the player feels the lack of everything, very often he is in a dying state, and survival strategies either disappear or become less profitable every day - drinking liquid tanks break, people on the streets thin out, goods are sold for a crazy amount of money. In addition, the player is constantly running out of time, it is impossible to catch all the activities on the map, as a result of which you have to choose between one or another task, each of which is interesting and contains one or another riddle. In all of this turmoil, the player must remember to look for the means of healing for the rest of the characters, each of which is valuable in all sorts of situations.

It was this concept of gradually increasing difficulty that made me fall in love with this truly masterpiece game. It takes several exciting hours to complete, and many players can't stand the pressure of the game - sometimes you can get into a situation from which there is simply no way out, even if the player made only a few mistakes in the process. In addition, there is a penalty for every death.
Of the minuses, I want to note the optimization. The requirements of the game are quite high, and even on powerful systems there are frame drops in a game that is not the most beautiful, but the plot tensions easily offset all the technical problems of Pestilence. Low price.

In conclusion, I strongly recommend everyone to get acquainted with this game. This is a truly exclusive product of its kind with its own atmosphere, unforgettable characters, musical accompaniment, which, unfortunately, did not find much popularity, although the game stands out from the rest of the projects on the good side and definitely deserves closer attention.

The mechanics are punishing, repetitive and somewhat clunky, and yet perfectly tuned to maximise immersion. I didn't feel like a gamer playing a game, I felt like Artemy Burakh facing an impossible struggle. And that is the sign of great art.

I saw this game advertised as horror. I disagree. It is bleak for sure, but I never found it scary. The cumulative effect of the bleakness gave me a sense of wonder, not fear. The early hours of gameplay are difficult, but the difficulty can be tweaked at any time, so it is more accessible than it first appears.

Recommended for anybody who liked Disco Elysium or Planescape Torment.

You do so and go to their house and find the place empty. You go back to your job only to find your friend smashing your project to pieces. Then, to add insult to injury, they berate you for leaving your project unattended. That's what this game is.

I like the doctor simulation aspect of this game. It's fun collecting herbs to make ingredients, rushing over to the patient's house, dodging the infected and gang members along the way, figuring out which medicine they need to increase their chances of survival, looting abandoned houses for money and supplies to upgrade your gear, and bartering with the townsfolk with the junk you loot for other junk you need, all while keeping your five survival meters filled. I wish that had been the entire game. What I don't like is when the game tells you to cross the entire map to complete some vague goal before a time limit is up, while doing everything it can to destroy your survival meters. Unfortunately that makes up most of the gameplay and is why I am in no rush to play this game again, while I would like to play the doctor stuff again, getting to it is a deal breaker. It's only intersting the first time when you don't know the story.

This piece of **** this wonderful, frustrating, lovable piece of **** is the game that makes an obscene amount of people quite literally INSANE about it, just look at the amount of hour long video essays on the franchise. I've had 8 finished playthroughs in less than 5 months, currently halfway through my 9th. I just can't even start explaining what it's done to me. This game is hard and it's beautiful for it. I will never understand the kind of average sweaty gamer who criticises the combat for being "clunky" and calls it a "budget skyrim", and then there's the art crowd, who wants a bare bones walking experience with no challenge. This is exceptional, no matter whatever they say, even the original couldn't blend the psychological horror of it and the mechanics so well. This game is written masterfully, the characters are unforgetable, and even the ones that haven't had the time to be fleshed out just yet all still have strong and memorable personalities. Just the sheer amount of themes and ideas this game has, the music, the visuals, the character design - it's absolutely wonderful. It's unbearable for some, and I guess that's what throws a lot of people off, but if you push through, if you **** the plague up, if you show the game that you're strong enough to complete it, you will almost surely want to come back to this masterfully crafted world. Buy this game, play it.

Again we see more video game critics dismissing a game due to inability to appreciate its message in presentation. I will not go over the actual story, but the mechanics and world are the way they are for a reason. But it has a lot to sayAgain we see more video game critics dismissing a game due to inability to appreciate its message in presentation. I will not go over the actual story, but the mechanics and world are the way they are for a reason. After the cult success of the first, they could have added more NPC models or streamlined the game’s presentation, but they stuck true to their vision. But it has a lot to say and not many people are willing to listen. It’s difficulty is on purpose, and says a lot about the character surviving this desperate situation. Combat is supposed to be punishing, and hard to grasp. Have you ever fought in real life??? As an active duty marine, most games don’t understand how fighting actually works. It’s wounding, exhausting, and terrifying if you aren’t the aggressor. Things can go south in an instant and you will be on guard in this harsh reality. You must replay and work to genuinely have a deep understanding of the game’s complex mechanics and narrative. The game says as much about the players as it does the developers when they chose to dismiss it as pretentious or appreciate the obscurity. Things are rarely handed to you, and after 2 quick run throughs of the first day, I had a firm grasp on the story and mechanics. Unlike Fallout for example where you are told everything you need to do and dialogue rarely does more than initiate combat or make someone like you, characters have complicated motives and methods for achieving their goals. They try to distract you, they try to confuse you, and they try to gain power over you often. Characters lie to you or feed you their own misinformation or incomplete knowledge, and you can do the same to learn more, and have a massive impact on the world at large. Unlike when I can take everything from a merchant in Skyrim because I became their friend and then sell back all their shelf stock to them, you need to search and plan and coordinate your efforts with the loot you find. Know who wants it, how to get it, and if it’s worth holding onto. You need to make complex decisions and hard choices. Unlike the biggest choices leading to a reskin of a city after a decision, you lead to children deaths or forgiveness, drug use or sobriety, and the ultimate survival of hundreds of lives from the looming threat. If you don’t like Difficult games and only want the equivalent of “game sugar” then yeah, this game won’t be for you. But if you want an experience that continues to reward every aspect of discovery and experimentation with its mechanics and story, then you should give this oppressive, masterpiece a try. Go in blind a few tries before you look to guides though, as the realization and connections are worth it, instead of coming in with a leg up, feel the stress and helplessness and grow to overcome. Games are more than their graphics and shooting mechanics. The music is diverse, introspective, and powerful, the cutscenes as well as the intro’s cinematic presentation are striking, the images are complicated and full of so much emotion by the creators it’s a shame many audiences won’t give it the time of day. Pathologic 2 is simply the best game ever made. Period. A metalinguistic masterpiece that surpasses any literature work or art piece I have ever seen. But let's conduct a more in-depth review to understand why these aren't just empty words.

Graphics: This game has an overall decent graphical quality, but it's the fidelity to the atmosphere where they truly shine. Pathologic 2 ambience has an uncanny feeling that fits in perfectly with the game's plot and characters, the level design and textures create a liminal space feeling that's very similar to those in the Source Engine, namely Half-Life 2. It creates a subliminal feeling of unmatched hopelessness which drives the point of the story home.

Character models are repeated, but recognizable, meaning that you might encounter three people that look the same in the same place, but none of them will truly be the same person. Minute details ensure that every NPC in Pathologic 2 is it's own person. This combined with the amazing animations give more personality to random strangers you run across.

Sound: Audio quality is perfect. Characters have voices that match their personalities, the music is simply phenomenal and is based on location and events that are happening in-game, sound effects are realistic and sometimes relevant towards the plot. I truly recommend using high-quality headphones for this game.

Gameplay: Pathologic is notorious, almost infamous, for it's unforgiving, downright frustrating gameplay. Hunger, thirst, exhaustion and health are deeply rooted aspects of this game and they have to be. It's through this suffering that you are immersed into the game world. If not for this difficult nature of the game, the point would just go over your head.
It features crafting processes, unique inventory mechanics, fluid dialogue system, a combat system that actually makes sense for the character you play as and so much more.

World/Level Design: Pathologic 2 gives me a feeling I only ever felt playing Death Stranding, it's a game that truly looks like every single rock and dirt patch was placed perfectly to fit in with the overall ambient, despite having a relatively small map, it makes it seem big through the gameplay itself, where innumerable obstacles will present themselves to make your path more difficult but also more rewarding.

Plot: Finally, we get to the real meat of the Pathologic series. Despite being a remake and presenting an almost similar (yet incomplete) story, it is simply the most well-written story ever told. Pathologic teaches you about hardships, suffering, hope, conflict, acceptance, sadness and pretty much every emotion in the book.
It doesn't overindulge itself and isn't afraid to hide things from you if you're not willing to look for them. Truth be told, I can't even begin to explain the story as Pathologic 2 is a book with at least 700 pages worth of content, every dialogue is characteristic, every item has an in-depth explanation, every interaction you have with every NPC is so vivid, you'd be convinced you're talking with an actual person. Dialogue options are never constricting, there's always a way for you, the player, to express what you want to say.

Pathologic 2 is an extremely niche game. Not in the sense that it's a different type of game that not everyone will enjoy like Hotline Miami or Warcraft III. It's like Death Stranding and Escape from Tarkov, it's meant to scare away the casual player, it's meant to make you face tough and almost unwinnable battles to make sure you're worthy enough to keep going and know what happens. And it's through this cycle that it shows how games can do so much more than just tell a story.

    They can change your mind.

TL;DR - Best game ever go buy it now

A brilliant unison of storytelling and gameplay, Pathologic 2 goes its own seperate way unburdened by the norms of contemporary game design. The result is a spectacular triumph of a game that comes once in a decade.

This is one of the best games that utilizes difficulty to tell a story, to create a terrifying ambient, to empathize with the people and to make you fear the spread of the pest, and there are many things you can talk about this game this review would be enormous.
If you want to play the game, TRY IT, it’s a hard game and I can comprehend that there are some people that can’t simply play the game in the intended way but if you can play the intended difficulty, play it that way, you will die many times but don’t worry, it is something natural and the game expects you to die, the maximum theme of the game I can argue is failure and to succeed even in the worst situation.
Only one thing before you play the game, DO NOT EVER MAKE THE FELLOW TRAVELLER’S DEAL AFTER DYING TO MUCH.

In an industry where the most talented technical workers are stuck on a battle of "who can make the most realistic-looking shooter?", Ice-Pick Lodge dives deep into unexplored aspects of games and, by consequence, developed a real masterpiece. This is a game where the Theory of mind applies and all credit for that goes to the writing of each character.

Mechanically, The game is challenging but fair. The developers use the game mechanics (hunger, Immunity, health, etc.) and economy to great effect. You experience the tenseness and desperation that one would feel if they found themselves in a plague infected town in the Russian Steppe. I've seen complaints about the combat; in my experience it was difficult but fair. I did not find it to be very "janky".

Artistically this game really can't be beat. It is stunningly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The character models are amazing, The sound design/music is up there with the Legend of Zelda games (probably better), and the writing is HONESTLY the best i've ever seen in a game. If there were a Pathologic novel i'd be reading it right now.

The last thing i have to mention is the dynamic quest system which can be viewed in the "Thoughts" page. The game is so good at pushing you to investigate different quest lines which each have multiple different articulation points and end in multiple, often unpredictable ways.

To summarize, I never expected that I would love this game so much, nor did i expect to give any 10 score reviews but here we are. In many ways i view Pathologic 2 as a contemporary take on Majora's Mask. There is really nothing else like it.

This is a deliberate feature which actually serves to make the game so much more immersive. Survival in this game is tough, and sometimes it's frustrating, but that also makes it that much more rewarding.

Focusing on the survival mechanics also ignores the real beauty of this game, which is art direction and writing. This is a beautifully-realized world featuring the merging of two worlds, a strange turkic steppe culture and Russian settlers. I've never been so intrigued by a game's settings.

AFTER THAT story begins. You are coming back to your home town, back from unfinished medical studies, for your father's request. You go back and you are getting involved in fight - three cadavers lie on the ground. Also, it happens your father was murdered and you are the suspect. At the first day of coming back to town people don't trust you, you are an outsider, folks in town try to lynch you few times. After connecting to few friends you are cleared of all suspitions, but there is much, much larger problem at the horizon - the plague...

Game is mix of cruel and forgiving - on the one hand survival mechanics are really rough (you will find yourself often selling last part of your clothes for simple apple bite), but if (or rather, when) you die, you just come back to the last save point - it is even integral to the story.

Play only if you are into challenging games. Visuals are absolutely great, storywise this game is also very immersing. I have my struggle with lack of voice recordings of dialogues - but it is understandable, knowing that the whole budget for the game was around 300,000$. It's absolutely wonderful that that game exists and creators were stubborn enough to release it.

Mechanics: We are talking here about a really hard and punishing game, but on the whole the mechanics system makes the gameplay even more realistic as your charakter tries to survive (find food, water, weapons) in a plague hit city with prices skyrocketing and criminality hitting the streets. The battle mechanics can be a bit clunky but then again...your character is a stepe-surgeon, not a marine . Having a fight or not can be an important decision at times, reminding me of those old school survival horror like SH2 and Resident evil 1-2 .
Music-Visuals: Some of the best ive ever seen, of course not 3A level but, the shadows.colours, voices, background music create a beautiful atmospheric experience. Almost everything seems to be exactly where it should.
Hint: In comparison to other games, here you are not the one in the center of the story, events might happen all over the city in real time, whether you are there...or not.. You will have 12 days, it will not be much but...barely enough .Your most important resource is time

The game play adds greatly to this sense of anxiety due to having to manage your health, immunity, hunger, thirst, and exhaustion, causing you to not have enough time to complete all the goals given to you within a given day. The writing in the game is also top notch, having a very novelesque feel to it. The only thing holding this game back from a 10/10 is some performance problems. Pathologic 2 is not without its issues. I'll get those out of the way quickly, so I can get on to explaining why I still esteem the game so highly.

First and worst, combat is as clunky as it was in the original game. But where Pathologic 1 mitigated that with quicksaves, Pathologic 2 has a far more limited save system and permanent death penalties.

Those penalties were, in my opinion, a misstep on the developers' part. They discourage exploration and experimentation in a game that otherwise encourages - or even demands - those very things. The ability to learn through death, rather than fearing and shunning it, would have felt much more congruent with the rest of the game.

Then there is the system by which named NPCs can become infected and die of the plague. A system that feels, too often, like it is completely out of the player’s control. While I'm sure that's part of the point, the plague is implacable, untameable, it is still a system in a game. If the player is to be motivated to interact with that system, they need to feel that their efforts are at least making some difference.

As an experiment, one day I made my rounds, treated everyone as best I could, and waited to see what results midnight would bring. I then reloaded a recent save, took a nap instead...and got the exact same results. The same people lived or died, were infected or remained healthy. A system like that, in which the player's best efforts and complete inaction can produce the same results, is not one that encourages the player to bother with it at all.

Now. With all that said, let's talk about how Pathologic 2 is still an excellent game and well worth your time.

The writing is some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a game. The people of the town, whether on your 'side' or not, are sympathetic and genuine. To your benefit or not, or without you in mind at all, they act according to their own fears and goals and convictions.

This sense of reality extends to the player character. He isn't a bland conduit through which the player can interrogate NPCs. He brings his own beliefs and history to each situation, so the player is always learning about him. He brings his own moods, but a player immersed in the experience will likely feel as he does, so the dialogue options come naturally.

And, perhaps most importantly, conversations flow. From one choice to the next, to a sensible conclusion. Again, no looping back to an interrogatory list of questions. It feels as though you are actually talking to people, as a person. Something sorely lacking in most games with interactive dialogue.

The atmosphere is also wrought perfectly. Ice-Pick Lodge excels at creating a very specific feeling - that of something unique, precious whether or not it is good, disappearing forever. A very autumnal sense of nostalgia and loss. The town, visually and aurally, is always communicating this sense to you. It is, itself, something unique and precious that will never be the same once - if? - this storm passes.

On the more strictly gameplay-mechanical side of things, the synergy between resource management and time management is gripping. Food, water, medicine, a safe place to sleep, places to be, things to do. It immerses you even more deeply in the world and character, and makes the game very difficult to walk away from. There's always the sense that you'll be able to breathe easier if you just find a bit more food, or complete this task, treat this person, make it back to your hideout, or at least through this infected district...the next thing you know, it's two in the morning, and you can't sleep anyways because your thoughts are still walking the streets of the infected town.

All that is why I heartily recommend Pathologic 2, despite its faults. Some of the systems weren't as tight or satisfying as they could have been, but the characters rang true, from the urchins in the warehouses to the town and the plague itself. The world felt real and important, the player’s choices plausible and emotionally difficult. What Ice-Pick Lodge does best, they do BEST, and I hope they can continue doing it for many years to come.

Это именно тот Мор, который мы ждали. Я очень рад, что в России ещё делают игры такого уровня.

Pathologic 1 & 2 are masterpieces of games as art. They are cruel and disturbing, but ask unique questions and do things you won’t see anywhere else. These are singularly unique experiences that are worth suffering through.

"Unbearable" is definitely one word for Pathologic 2, but that hides a few others: engulfing, ingenious, profound, invigorating. [Issue#341, p.106]

Pathologic 2, just like its predecessor, has a ton of annoying routines which will easily scare away even the most patient players. Yet after getting through the game to the last bow I felt a sudden urge to return to this moody prairie town in the middle of nowhere.
