Correct title should be Pathfinder: Load Screen maker. It's a great game. At the current state it is still under development and it will take some time until it will be patched up entirely, but the devs doing their best every day and i have no problem with that.

The problem starts with the amount of loading screens we have to go through to get to the tasty part (ruling your kingdom).

The problem starts with the amount of loading screens we have to go through to get to the tasty part (ruling your kingdom). Let's count: Throne room - kingdom panel - building panel - back to kingdom panel - back to throne room - out to town and finally go back to world map. 7 loading screens to get on with your kingdom. And every one of them (with just one exception) take up to few minutes. I dunno but for me it's little bit wrong.

Besides that the games is GOLDEN! It is the best DnD experience i have since BG2 era. It is actually the Baldurs Gate of 2018. I couldn't imagine a better classic rpg game. The writing is exceptionally good. The lore is deep. The number of events and quest is overwhelming. Companions are lively and unique. Mechanics are proper d&d 3.75 (it is unique to pathfinder if i'm correct) ruling set, which is the best out of what d&d can offer.

If they ever fix that ridiculous loading screens and bugs i'll change the score to 10. And one more issue i have with the game is that, there could be more descriptions and infos about the mechanics, effect, stats etc. The game is too complex for some people. There should be more info for players non familiar with the pathfinder or dnd in general.

Just started the game but love how its true to the pen and paper version of Pathfinder. I love how it has the various combat tricks from Pathfinder - INTIMIDATE a foe to get a bonus or CHARGE to get another bonus. So far so great!

Impressive to see developers released such a great game and that respects the bible (Ruleset of Pathfinder). More than 50h now, and I litteray dream of the game during my nights. Brillant, cleaver, and... omg... A great storyline. Combats are amazing too. The best of the genre. Thank you so much for that. The game who will gather the pathfinder community around it!!

Less than 3% of game owners have actually beaten the game. They put out DLC that no one was interested in, and have really bad communication to their player base. The game's normal difficult is set to superman, and you'll find yourself constantly losing battles that statistically you should have won, because the devs don't understand how random dice rolls are supposed to work. The enemies have a 60~100% chance of hitting you, but you have about a 30~50% chance of hitting the enemies regardless of how high of a level you are. The NPC that fight along side you are typically better than you are at their given roll. You'll find that main of the NPC end game quests are broken. The game itself doesn't offer a good tutorial so even if you're familiar with pathfinder tabletop you'll still have a hard time adjusting. The lack of quality items for your specific character will be hard to find as there isn't a ton of variety in the late game items to fill the needs of any specific build. This game really needs an overhaul, and should have never been released in it's current state. I would consider this game to be in alpha transitioning to beta. If the devs actually fix many of the bugs, and core design issues this game might be a 7. In it's current state it's not worth even picking up as you can't actually play through the entire game without encountering bugs. Great idea, poor execution from a new dev. Expand

This game truly took me back to Infinity-era of RPGs. (Baldur's Gate,IWD and so on) Mechanics and the feeling of grand adventure here is something I've not had in a really long time.

Game is unforgiving; you get to do plenty of mistakes if you are careless. You need to use your head and show caution. Much of the content here isn't present only to lose to player in an entertaining way.

This game is perfect. Don't listen to kids that never played a single tabletop RPG in their life, saying that the game is difficult, that the resting system is bad. The resting system is perfect, the game uses almost every Pathfinder rule. Yeah, the tabletop is difficult! Want stupid and easy gameplay go play Diablo, or whatever. I'm a backer and this game lives up to its promise.

It provides immense joy of being immersed into it, and whats best - it has a LOT of content, so much you start to wonder if all those other "rpg games" with short campaigns and copy paste elements are jsut a demo versions or early betas - because no way can they compete with RPG that litterally lets you spend hundreds of hours full of rich content and great replayability. it'll take you ages to finish it, and right after you'll start again and then over because of how many things you could do differently and how charater playstiles, your decisions and alighment affect the game.

The developers not just lived up to their reputation, they did much more - established even higher standard (Nival/allods team/now "Owlcat" already being "Blizzard of Russia").

I really hope this game continues to recieve active support, expansion and continuations. Being new to Pathfinder rules and setting, i am already addicted to it and potential for further developing the story and universe - be it in dlcs, expansion or more games on same engine is great. So many stories in the game and so many more exciting adventures hinted.

I must admit I didn't have so much fun with a video game for a long time, it is truly a masterpiece. This game is to Pahtfinder what Baldur's Gate was to AD&D. The game is huge and non-linear, with a lot of freedom of exploration and interesting quests. I played 170 hours so far (hard difficulty, completionist) and probably just starting the mid-game content. I played 170 hours so far (hard difficulty, completionist) and probably just starting the mid-game content. Contrary to other reviewers, for a game this large and complex, I'm amazed that there are so few bugs. And congratulations on the adaptation of the Pathfinder ruleset to a videogame, very well done.

    In comparison to Baldur's Gate:
    - Pathfinder's feat selection and complete liberty of multiclassing makes leveling up and developing your characters a much richer experience.
    - The management of you barony is really well thought and much better than the "keep" system we had in Baldur's Gate.
    - Time constraints. I understand that not everybody will like them, but to me, they make the game so much more interesting. You now actually have to manage your spells somewhat and can't afford to rest after each combat to systematically recover them all.
    - Inventory management is nice. A global inventory for the whole party with filtering and sorting options, shared encumbrance, no need to move items between containers (bag of holdings simply have negative weight).
    - The influence of weather on the game. In a storm, you move more slowly unless you have druid/ranger feats and the rain adds concealment on ranged attacks.

It is very similar to Baldur's gate (weaknesses and strengths) except for it following Pathfinder rules.

I have had some issues, while playing. And I have seen an immense effort to fix those. What many are ignoring here is the larger number of basic choices and concepts in Pathfinder compared to D&D 2.0, that BG didn't have to deal with, as well as the concepts like kingdom management and such that make it larger or at least more complex.

Could it be improved -- Yes

Do I expect to have more fun in the future (playing it) -- Yes

Kingdom building is a nice addition
plot is well told if a bit generic
The voice acting that is there is really good
Nice physics engine that other RPGs of this type don't have
Most characters are interesting and well done
Love that this game is actually challenging and downright hard at times

    Cons:
some Bugs in my play-through but no enough to kill the experience
    No crafting
    No gambits
Not enough Voice acting to compete with other RPGs
While the art style is nice, sometimes the graphics can be a bit plain, flat and look outdated at some times
Environments all kinda look the same, not much environment variation

Conclusion: if you like CRPG's chances are you will love this but if your looking for a first time CRPG maybe go with something else like Pillars of Eternity as it's a bit more casual. This game requires you to be a veteran of these kinds of RPG's, but if your looking for that kind of challenge and those good old Baldurs Gate overtones and spirit then this is a must buy

The intro of the game is definitely the worse part. Not even 5 minutes of lore given ; the game starts and you are given a quest to kill some bandits and promised land in exchange, to fulfill the fantasy of power all kids dream of. You sleep, and in the second room there's already fighting, and you won't really care who wins or loses, because you didn't have the time to attach yourself to any character.

The tabletop rules aren't meant for a video game either. In other games, leveling up might mean having an amazing new skill to spam ; in this game, it might only mean gaining 10 hp, +1 attack and + 2 damage.

Aside from that, the game is fine and still worth buying.

Boring, bland story around characters that you'd find in the RPG starter pack with some of the most atrocious combat I've ever seen. You'll randomly jump between insultingly easy encounters and ones with enemies that straight up one shot you. Less than halfway through I just wanted it to end.

The graphics are good enough - they arent beautiful but as a former game designer and scripter for the SSI Darksun series and tester on the gold box series I understand the tradeoff between breadth and depth in art production investment. Whats most important -- the things I would have my character do and by and large supported. The conversations and situations are nuanced and not at all childish / black&white, the characters display in conversation that actual amount of depth that is supported. What I admire is the care the developers have in not overwriting what is in fact not supported. I love the town building, character development, the difference int he value of loot to different people. I love the combat. Its all good. Expand

The game was released in typical fashion with a rash of patches early on... but this is definitely a gem. Great RPG worthy of days of old, add in the kingdom building and we have a great title in a barely explored genre.
Character building, NPCs personalities, choices that matter... all presented in a cartoon like graphic environment.
Looking forward to the DLCs and hopeful for sequels.

Only played it for 2 hours and got a refund.

    1. Noticed a large amount of clipping and glitches. The characters don't even hold 2 handed swords properly, as the right arm is bent at an unnatural angle and looks very bad. So obviously has some pathing issues as well.

    2. There is only one portrait for a human female, and that one looks bad as well. Overall very very small selection of portraits that I, personally, can work with.

    3. The combat is highly complex, with a lot of spells and gimmicks, and you don't get slowly introduced to them, you're just handed a whole party group in the first 15 min of the game, and they all have like 10 abilities each or something. I'm sure this is a good thing for many, but personally I cba with it.

Overall, my sentiment is "meh!". Maybe I'll buy it again when I really have nothing else to play.

Characters sometimes get stuck, bounce through walls, or just annoyingly get in your way. Just moments before this review, I got the familiar save error (i.e. there becomes no way to save a game), so had to close the game and restart again. Load times are another pain in the ass and average 1+ minute.

As for the story itself and the gaming elements, its excellent. Managing a kingdom, building towns, and seeing the progress is satisfying. The leveling systems are a bit interesting, though way too much for my tastes (really need 10+ schools of magic? 20+ classes?). Playing melee is the opposite experience as main builds learn almost nothing in skills. There are many questionable/terrible design choices along the way, like having limited control during battles, having commands ignored, etc. The crap battle management ( maybe a PS4 issue) makes issuing commands as fun as juggling broken glass bottles - all I can do is crank difficulty to 0 and let the crap AI auto everything. Even the equipment system is trashy as "more powerful" items seem to make no difference other than cosmetics.

I'll only remember the PnP and how I actually managed to whoop the giant fireball that is the final boss.

I both love and hate PnP rules. I understand why they made it like this. It makes a good succinct pitch to a board of directors because they don't play games and have short attention spans and they they will reject complexity. But you can hide complexity when you pitch it as "PnP rules", even though much of that complexity is outright gratuitous.

There are half a dozen different ways to die in combat besides a zero hp. If dexterity on your mage is zero you die. If strength is zero, you die. If you turn to stone, you die. The default result for anything is you die, and reviving a dead player is so expensive you'll usually reload.

Most of my reloads weren't because I actually lost but because things went sour in ways that were too annoying. There are dozen ways your enemies can break your 'will' score and make your team useless. You'll start fights charmed, confused, dazed, asleep, laughing uncontrollably, etc., I always reloaded and hurriedly cast one of dozens of completely different buffs before the fight. The same goes for if the enemy AI targets my mages instead of my tanks. (Quite a few fights come down to which of your people the AI decided to target.)

I'm generally against streamlining in games, but does it really make sense that stoneskin protects against slashes but not arrows?

At least the buff spells are guaranteed to work. Most offensive spells never work unless the enemy is already easy to defeat. P:K's fighting odds are stacked against the player who fights anything more than one level higher, while anything more than one level lower is very easy. Attacks on higher level enemies will nearly always miss, while lower levelled ones get hit with crits.

If it's going to be like that then why have combat at all? Why not just auto-win any fight with lower level enemies and auto lose higher level fights?

Too much of P:K's game play feels like I'm rolling dice and repeatedly reloading a save and re-rolling. No where is this more prevalent than the kingdom management. A hint to new players: your kingdom managers have to succeed. The dice are rolled once before the day of a project's completion. Keep reloading until they succeed.

Playing P:K's kingdom management feels like playing Civilization on diety mode. Winning means reloading hundreds of times. To make things more annoying, there are situations where your entire kingdom is paralyzed for two weeks while you upgrade something or annex something. You often have to re-run that two week cycle in hope of rolling a better outcome.

What happens when the outcome is poor? Your kingdom can die and the game ends. There are at least two separate stability scores that can fall to zero. I remember one particular time when I was crowned king and there was a long sequence of dialogue about how great I was doing. Then I ran the skip day feature and my kingdom flopped over like a wet corn flake. Stability equals zero. Game over.

Nothing stressed me so much as that stability score. All sorts of things can reduce it and very few things bring it back up. Your kingdom is periodically invaded by hill giants or other stability-reducing enemies that would be a minor nuisance if you had to actually fight them. But you can't. Instead they have to be purged using kingdom management, and the stability penalty (usually) doesn't get restored after you've rolled the dice a dozen times and gotten rid of them.

Thankfully, you can throw your citizens a feast and bring stability back. I spent most of my in game money on feasts.

Speaking of feasts, if this game were a pizza it would be lined with ghost peppers. The hot spiciness would disguise the fact that the sausage is rancid and the dough has whitefly larvae the same way as the difficulty disguises the fact that the story is uninspired, the characters are a cliche mix of cutesy and arrogant, and the C&C is not all that deep. For example, there is one character whose entire persona turns out to have been completely false, but if you forgive him his betrayal he reverts to that deception as if it never happened and everyone else does too.

That said, the game hides its depth well. I wasn't expecting some of the twists in the main conflict. The game is also pleasantly long. There are lots of environments and enemies crammed into it.

Would I recommend P:K? Maybe. I'll definitely consider buying the sequel. But I'm not replaying the original.

This is the kind of game I should love, but I find myself barely tolerating. They all but force you to play a cast of insipid characters with painfully one dimensional personaities tied to the terrible D&D alignment system. You are all but forced to assign these poorly optimised slobs to help run your kingdom too.

The difficulty is stupidly harsh for how bad the NPCs you are given are, meaning you more or less have to min max to play the game on anything harder than easy. Stupid given that it's run off a very complicated D&D 3.5e clone called Pathfinder which is never explained in the game and basically relies on you having system knowledge and spend time googling to find out what spells exist, etc to plan your build.

The UI for the kingdom management is terrible, never showing relevant info, making you dig around to do anything and pointelessly locking you out from making changes on some tasks. The UI for combat is glitchy and painful to use, the turn based mode ocaaisionally just not letting you use a character's turn for no reason. The dice roll DCs often lie, with stuff like 17 AC needing a 16 to hit with a +10 or the floating text laughably floating up saying something like "20 vs 9" and that somehow failing a save, or the inverse. The randomiser has some backend fudging going on where you will commonly see your characters rolling 1s and critically missing and enemies commonly rolling 5/5 16+s to hit you.

Text has poor grammar, misspellings, and wordy paragraphs of stodge to waste your time. You are frequently railroaded into decisions, or made to make decisions that make no sense because the developers don't even understand the alignment system they insisted on using. Skill DCs are set far too high, being commonly failable even with min maxed characters, leaving no room for rp. Much of the issues are met with the refrain "Just cheat to fix that" from the community, which is mind boggling.

Overall, this is a terrible effort at a crpg, but is at least pretty, with some nice music and a reasonable adaptation of the Pathfinder system for a video game. It's just a shame it's so badly put together. I have no idea how it scores so highly, and can only surmise that the Paizo fanboys are out in force, making excuses for one of, if not the first video game adaptation of the popular tabletop system. Or maybe people that kickstarted it trying to delude themselves that it was worth the money?

Mixed: nicely done companion progress, stats, fights but using overcomplicated DnD rules limites fun.

Cons: difficulty of clashes constantly jumps between trivial and impossible, in the same part of map. On normal difficulty you are going through enemies with little to none trouble then WHAM! a very next hostile brings your whole team to ground in a few seconds, or it is untouchable and you can't do jack. It happens with random encounters too, not just statically located antagonists like turbo-cat, Rambo-zombie or that overclocked troll in dwarf keep.

Lacks field of view: how far enemies can see.

I spent about 100h hours playing this game, it has the potential to be very enjoyable, but due to hidden timers in many quests I abandoned this game - if they were as clear and consistent, as timers of curses, then everything would be fine. Making such a decision screwed up the game for people, who aren't fanatics.

Update: with "Kingdom Resolution" mod the game feels more controllable, it restores some fun, so finally I completed playthrough :-)

Game makers told themselves that the classic isometric was an outdated concept and viewpoints changed to "flexible from first person to iso-on-all-angles. Like the kids that wanted all candies from the shop. Worked terrible and was disastrous for immersive game-play. I think I bought and tried 10 to 15 of the big titles in recent years, and they all disappointed greatly. The games generally had no story line consequence, were full on plot-holes and/or were very inconsistent. It's like people did not care about a well-structured story anymore, an any story at all. So in my eyes the amazing and potent, classic turn-based, ISO-view, D&D based genre was gone and wouldn't return. I and blamed the current game design philosophy (or lack thereof), that tries to jam as many effect and novelties in a game and think that that is what makes a good game. I closed the chapter and let my newly acquired PC gather dust (or play Spotify, rather). Of course I kept an eye out on forums, and followed rumors, cause you never know right. Then Beamdog touched-up Baldur’s Gate and reintroduced them. And made a few modules, that were so hollow and bad that I wish they wouldn’t. And then rumors of a worthy follow-up appeared, Pillars of Eternity. Tried it. In short, it’s a good game, but it lacks an immersive story that it tied to the game, and thus it does not offer the same rewarding character-development-tied-to-a-good-story. And then I got stuck in a cavern that felt too much like a dungeon crawlers, and I was unable to beat a room, time-after-time, and It was unclear if I wasn’t supposed to be in that place at that level, also mainly cause the story-line wasn’t there to confirm or deny this. So I stopped play, Pillars did not tick the box. It didn’t contain a creafully designed story in combination with game development. The came Divine Divinity: Original Sin. It was actually good on the starting story, nice surprise. But. Then I get to a dungeon (where you are supposed to be), and I can in now way beat an enemy (or set off enemies) there. So I googled around, I basically found that you need to set your characters up in a terribly specific way so they synergies, and do exponentially increased damage. That a game flaw right there, lost interest, quit playing. To bad. Then I sat in the car with two buddies going to an event, and I told the story above bout me looking for that new fun game to play, and one said “seems like you are talking about Pathfinder: Kingmaker”. And my other buddy confirmed. I could not believed them, cause I still checked the interwebs regularly. But I figured, why not, let’s download it. Started out, and immediately thought “hey, this feels good”. Then I found that the mechanics are basically old skool D&D (I thought Pathfinder had a very different system), which was like coming home. With a lot of new builds and rules, which keeps it fresh. Played the introduction chapter, and literally all my synapses were fire up red hot. Om my, was this the actual game I was looking for for roughly 20 years? It very well could be .. dang…. The camera view felt great, the combat system felt great, the story line was very-very solid, the effort-reward ratio was solid (can’t express how important this is for a game). I just started the 2nd chapter of 8 in total and I have to ration myself to the PC for two reasons: if I don’t I lose my family/job and the amazing experience will be over way to soon! This game has the depth, the loving care of a great story writer, a team that understands risk-reward that makes a game a great game. It obviously had a very solid playtesting phase, and provide on screen hints before difficult combat, to prevent game-breaking situations. What can I say, one of the things that makes it right is that it is so well balanced. Then I found our Chris Avellone wrote for it! One of the creators of Baldurs Gate; and it all adds up. And it’s not from a huge huge studio, so it didn’t have editors ramming it into a boring mainstream format. It’s a Russian-German made game, from what I understand. All I can say finally is: thanks people who made this game, you revived PC gaming for me and I am looking forward to many many more hours of Kingmaker! This game rocks, it offers so many great options and experience, the story is amazing, the map system is great, and it is made with so much care. It is the new Baldurs Gate, and even overtakes it! I don't want to compare POE II vs Pathfinder Kingmaker vs Divinity: Original Sin II but it seems Divinity: OS2 is the winner as a new genre PC RPG adaptation. Even OS2 have many handicaps. Oh boy, I'm missing old time TBS-RPGs. All new adaptation RPGs are not providing real RPG experience at all. You can deceive yourself for giving high points to those worthless games.

Edit: Game is a total disaster. I'm at act5 and I can say WTF is this! Debuffs make you cancer in this game. I admit some dialogs are really funny and enjoyable but couldn't save the broken game.

Not a fun game. It's boring due to the board game rules being followed so strictly. So, as the board game relies on dice rolls, the game also does and instead of being a Tactical/strategic RPG, it becomes a game based on luck. Good presentation, bad game mechanics.

Overall it's too stuffed with useless crap that lacks any interest and feels like placeholder just to give something to the players. Replayability is complete grabage, being too boring.
