Absolutely phenomenal game! This is what I have been craving since Diablo 2. I was severely disappointed by Diablo 3. It was dumbed down to the point of an Activision title. Path of Exile feeds the nostalgia feeling I have been chasing for years.

The game is in constant production by an active game developer. While small, they have created a game far superior to their massive opponent, Blizzard. They began production with 10 people, in comparison to the thousands Blizzard had. I have been blown away by how deep this game is.

The skill tree is reminiscent of the Final Fantasy sphere grid. You have skill gems which are altered by support gems, as well as trigger gems. Instead of the ever deflating value of gold found in similar games, Path of Exile uses a barter system with incredible randomization, creating a complex and evolving economy.

Characters are not limited to their said class. You can expand into passives of other characters, making builds seemingly unlimited. The dark and gritty atmosphere is beautifully reminiscent of Diablo 2. I won't give any spoilers, if you were a Diablo 2 addict, this game is for you.

While it is free to play, it is not pay to win. You have the option of buying cosmetic items to make your character look cool. If you're a pack rat, you can also buy more stash tabs.

Don't listen to the reviews upset about end game. While there are great end battles, the developer plans to release new content to expand on the story line every six or so months. However, to keep you busy in the meantime, you find maps you can randomize and play with your friends.

The only thing Path of Exile is lacking from my point of view, is the cinematic videos scene in the Diablo series. While I enjoyed those, you can't expect such production to come from an indie game developer.

I hope you give the game a try. If you enjoy the game, consider purchasing some cosmetic items to support future content for this great game!

Love this game. Its a thinking mans Diablo 3. Its deep, promotes many builds, constantly has great updates from developers. Its basically everything diablo 3 fans wish there game was (and are angry its not. All the low scores here are from D3 people trying to defend their franchise..)

Try the game out, its amazing (oh and its free. And no pay to win, the only thing you can buy is cosmetics).

I played the alpha and beta. Several years later this game is still fascinating and the developer amaze me with frequent patching, very very detailed patch log above industry standards and a definitely not pay 2 win approach for a F2P game.

Path of Exile, with no exaggeration, spoken from my quite aged Diablo 1 & 2 and other RPG gamers heart is what Diablo 3 should have been.

One thing though: The ladders change every 4 months. If you don't like something about the game currently, wait 4 months. It's a long wait, but things change drastically when this ladder change happens. So maybe you will like it again.

This rating is an overall rating of the game. Not based purely on it's current state, but it's track record for being awesome. Some people don't like the current state of the game, that will always be true, but it changes just often enough to balance making your progress worthwhile but giving something new to refresh your interest in the game.

There are many things that make PoE great, but the one that stands out the most is build diversity. You can make literally dozens of characters that all have real, functionally different play-styles. If you get bored of one character, there's always another build to try (whether based on Keystone passives, or unique items). Finding combinations of passives, skill gems, support gems, and unique items that work well together is the core strategy aspect of this game. Oh, it's also FREE and (starting October 23) will be available (for FREE) on Steam. The game will continue to receive meaningful updates (skills, uniqes, new playable areas, etc.) *frequently* for the forseeable future (1 year+ guaranteed).

The negative aspects are as other reviewers have mentioned: non-negligible desynchronization issues sometimes causes unpreventable deaths, and issues with item crafting feeling more like gambling than upgrading. The developers have already stated that they do not like the current crafting system, and have hinted that the system will be changed or even overhauled, whereas the desync issue is their biggest headache and may not be entirely fixable based on how their server/client system currently operates. These problems, among a small selection of minor issues, are why I did not give it a 10/10.

Regardless, as a long time ARPG player, I can safely say that PoE has set the bar higher than all who have come before.

You can view my profile to see my gaming history, I feel my opinion here is pretty valid. I can't really explain the depth with PoE, you will have to play it for a while to experience it, but this is definitely a game for hardcore gamers in the ARPG field. The way items drop, how the economy works, and crafting, all make for a wonderfully challenging and time consuming experience. The skill tree is of course incredible and the amount of builds are endless.

This is the first 10 I have given in a long time but I do feel it is necessary to say that this game is not perfect. I give it a 10 because although it is not perfect, the amount of entertainment (play time) I have received is beyond any other game and it has all been for free. In the future I hope to see improvements with the servers in general, including lag, disconnections, and desync. There also needs to be more end-game content, I have consistently ranked in the top 20 on ladder seasons but grinding the same four maps is getting a little stale ;x

All-in-all though if you are an ARPG or Diablo fan this game is a must try!!!!!! Collapse

I cannot recommend this game despite having some fun with it. Why?

    - Loot is unrewarding (quantity over quality) - even unique items suck or are not useful for your build in 95% cases - Too much focus on trading, which is technically cumbersome (3rd party apps/webpage) - Skills are unbalanced - esp. lately, when the power creep has become so obvious (chaos dmg skills **** on melee) -

    - Outdated gfx engine
    - Very laggy in maps (ping jumping from 20 ms to 3000 ms!), connection problems resulting in death of your character (also, you lose precious XP needed to level up)
    - Too much RNG, esp. in crafting
    - Too much grind for currency if you want to get to the endgame content
    - Too much repetition, esp. when levelling new characters - and the campaign is nothing special (you just eagerly wait for it to end ffs)
    - So much time consuming that I'd rather play 10 other (better) games in the same timespan
    - Unbalanced/unrewarding boss battles (bosses can be either pathetic or OP; you'd expect something special for killing Kitava in the final act. Nope, there is only trash!)
    - You need to buy expensive stashes to hoard stuff to improve your characters, etc. - the game is falsely advertised as F2P; it's like "free to try out" but then you need to invest heavily if you want to keep it going.

    League specific problems (Synthesis):
    - Badly designed, bloated content - even more unrewarding/time consuming than other parts of the game. F*** that!

Not only is POE full of challenging and fun content the developers (GGG) are awesome, they REALLY listen to the community and respond quick (they don't take months to respond to a problem the community pointed out) bi weekly patches added content and no pay to win what so ever! What makes this game 10/10 for me is the items, and how they are designed which is what an action RPG is all about. The item system is so deep and detailed, you will either get intimated or fall in love at first sight. There are a lot of items in this game worth keeping and man oh man when you get an upgrade you can feel it!! Unique are insanely well made.. most of them come with a huge additional benefit.. with a cost however. But last but certainly not least is the end game. PoE is the ONLY Action RPG with a TRUE end game. Maps.. randomized maps which YOU roll the stats for (using items you find) and grinding your way up to level 100 but don't worry.. its not an "MMO fantasy grind" its the kind of grind that gets you at the edge of your seat everytime you play. I highly recommend reading up guides before playing the game because it Is challenging, however if you prefer to learn with trial and error thats ok too Path of Exile to this day, is now my top 3 games of all time. I found Path of Exile and I'm playing it non-stop.
I loved the skill system, which is pretty similar to the open point system of Final Fantasy X, I loved the fact that there isn't a proper currency but spendable orbs, and I'm loving how the art of the game is realistic and dark in the same vein as the first Diablo and Starcraft of the 90's instead of the childish tone game nowdays took, and as someone who never buys game and always pirate, except if it's from Paradox or some very obscure creative developer, I love their market model.
Maybe I'm so excited because like another reviewer said "You didn't reach endgame yet", maybe the game is good in the end.

I really liked this game at first but soon after about level 50 or so on a character it becomes more and more apparent the lack of polish and blatant oversights of fundamental game design issues.

I really liked this game at first but soon after about level 50 or so on a character it becomes more and more apparent the lack of polish and blatant oversights of fundamental game design issues.

The passive tree is a novel idea but is just jam packed crammed full of useless nodes, it needs to be made smaller with better benefits. At first it feels like there are a lot of options and room to grow but there are only 1 or 2 logical paths to even take because of the surplus of pointless nodes. In turn the excess of useless nodes grants the game absolutely no level of customization when there is only 1 "correct" or most 'powerful' path.

The majority of the vendor recipes never even come up or are completely useless anyways. For example iron ring skill gem a completely useless ring? There are lots of pointless ones like this if you look at the wiki page for vendor recipes. Skill gems are completely worthless to sell to vendors. The only skill gem "sink" is the onyx amulet needed 1 of each type and that is even if you want a worthless white amulet with +jack to all attributes.

The race events/leagues are made a complete static joke by the fact that the starting positions on the passive tree force you to play in 1 direction. The end game maps are extremely repetitive and don't really make any sense to me as far as the progression of the "story".

You can just use waypoints or portal scrolls in the game at ANY point or boss battle to go back to town and completely refill all of your flasks. And if you refuse to participate in such idiotic redundancy, there are simply not enough flask slots for how many different types of flasks there are that can be utilized. The keys 6-0 are not used for anything else by default why not have at least 6 to 10 flasks? Or possibly 2 sets of flasks (like with 'X' and weapon sets), that way you could have health/mana etc on one and then maybe resists on the other

I just think for how many things were designed in a great where there are WAY too many things that are completely obvious quick fixes that for some reason go addressed? Just because a game or something is free doesn't mean people want to play or use it if it sucks or is no fun and serves no purpose. There are A LOT of free games nowadays this is not the 90s anymore where you had to play OG Runescape.

The idea of an economy without gold is amazing but the consequences delivered in this game are in no way worth it what so ever. All of the consumable items have insanely terrible chances of giving you anything good or actually upgrading gear to be better than what you are currently wearing.

Trying to level and grind levels in the later game (50+) is not rewarding in any sense of the word. Literally your only option to continue progressing (especially due to drought of any useful item drops) is to clear and re-clear the same exact boring instances over and over again. The leveling curve is waaaay too skewed and unbalanced. The game needs at least another act (Act IV) to spread out the rest of the levels throughout all 3 difficulties. Right now everything is jammed within the first 60+ levels or so and it makes no sense so it forces you to repeatedly farm "end-game" maps, SNOREFEST! I know often ARPGs in this style are referred to as a "Dungeon Crawl", well never in my entire life more have I felt like I was "CRAWLing" through a game or character levels. And then in the end what is it all for? Even if you get to a high level and get nice loot and gear on a league eventually all of your crap just becomes Standard, so ridiculously pointless.

Plain and simple this game heavily favors people who are already in end-game and have been contributing donations since closed beta and before. These people have infinite orbs of all types and can readily farm even more for all of their lower characters. So yeah if you have the ability to farm hundreds of thousands of orbs and gear then maybe it is fun to gear up a lower level character and play around. But if you are playing with your highest level character don't expect jack to ever drop that will improve your character or keep you from dying.

Beyond countless performance issues and bugs with this game it is still a great game to try because the initial price is right.. This game has an unlimited amount of potential but as far as I'm concerned had no business leaving beta. "Room to grow" doesn't mean "let's go", disappointing. DO NOT expect this to fill the void for fans left by "Diablo II" that "Diablo 3" completely failed absolutely miserably at delivering on. This game can be fun for short periods of time, however in it's current state is nowhere near ready or capable of bringing the ARPG experience that is deserving of over a decade now removed from Diablo II.

Now that the open beta test has started, it can check anyone who wants. The entertainment program is familiar: choosing a hero (marauder, archer, templar, duelist, shadow or witch) you go to fight with Evil, that is, click on the numerous enemies. When inventory is packed with trophies dropped from them, you have to open a portal to the city where you can sell unnecessary, buy the right one, and also get a quest from characters that are shouting exclamation marks over their heads.
The scheme is familiar, but the Path of Exile is clearly not a simple clone of Diablo: there are enough original ideas in it. Take at least a role-playing system. Characteristics of the hero - strength, intelligence and dexterity, indicators of different types of damage and protection - grow automatically, but with the skills of things are more interesting. Each class has more than a thousand passive skills. Having reached a new level, the player receives a point, which can be acquired skill from a certain group. For example, a duelist starts with skills that increase the speed and effectiveness of attacks with blades, and the witch from those that increase mana regeneration and spell power. And nothing prevents you from moving freely from one group to another, regardless of the specialization of the character. For example, a Templar, being a hybrid class, makes a bet on both strength and intellect. Immediately there will be a dilemma - to pump his elemental spells, moving further in the magical direction, or develop attacks with weapons, and then the ability to own a shield?

It is planned that in the future guilds or groups of players will pay for the creation of their own leagues with special rules of the game
For active skills, there are no developmental branches. You do not even know what abilities are available to the hero, because they depend on the precious stones that you find or receive as a reward - they need to be inserted into the corresponding in color slot on the weapon or armor. To each class stones with thematic abilities drop out more often. A witch, for example, will immediately get a blue gem with fireball. Given that at any time it is allowed to replace one stone with another, you have a huge freedom of choice when and on what ability to bet. By the way, stones also get experience in combat, which increases the power of abilities. The point of preservation is not only cities, but also portals, with which you can quickly navigate between open locations
Trade in the Path of Exile is based on the principle of exchange - instead of gold or another currency, scrolls and artifacts that change the properties of weapons and equipment are used. If you give something valuable, you will immediately get a powerful artifact. Cheap junk can be exchanged at best for part of the artifact. But if you accumulate more trash and fuse everything at once, there is a chance to get something useful. And here you have a choice: regularly get rid of unnecessary things or accumulate them for profitable exchange. This is unusual for the Path of Exile. As in any part of Diablo, you can play in two modes: normal and hardcore, where the death of the character is irreversible. The trick is that the hero who died in hardcore mode does not disappear, but becomes available in the usual mode. Consequently, one can not worry that after the death of the hero, the objects and abilities that have been extracted will disappear without a trace. Many active skills only work with certain types of weapons
To effectively deal with serious and numerous enemies, we recommend joining any party. In every big city there is a message board where you can see the list of available lots and determine the location where they are. The game is implemented and PvP. Some NPCs offer teleportation to special locations, where you can take part in a duel with another player of about the same level (the winner is determined on the basis of several rounds) or team to team. However, while Path of Exile does not bet on battles between players. Another interesting point is that the heroes and most enemies have an energy shield. Before damaging health, it is necessary to eliminate this barrier, and its effectiveness can be increased through special subjects and passive skills. Finally, the game is a curious system of potions. Do not clog inventory with a dozen red and blue bottles. At the start you are given a few bottles of reusable use. When you use them to regenerate health or mana, the amount of potion decreases. But it is restored with every killed enemy. It is possible to squander the reserves only in battle with a really strong opponent. As you pass, there will be more capacious bottles that give all sorts of additional effects

The fact that this game is free and isn't pay to win makes me confused as to how major publishers get away with the stuff they release sometimes... Anyways, Path of Exile for me is the game that Diablo 3 should have been and for that I say thank you grinding gears!

    - Intuitive design (it is very similar to most of the games in it's genre including the popular Diablo line)
    - Skill tree (There is only one skill tree, each class begins at a different place, and there are many many choices and paths to take)

    Things I'm not content with:
-the trade system (it is not coin based, each item is worth a type of base magic item [ident. scrolls, teleport scrolls etc.] and items are purchased from the vendor in the same sort of barter, it makes it difficult to flat purchase items and limits trade considerably, but this may have been their intent)
-The Grouping System (I feel it is a little clunky but if more players were to use it, it would be manageable, but the player base is not what it could have been)

This game has potential to hold for months or even years, becouse there are so many combinations of pasives and active skills that you can try out. But there are some big flaws also that can drive you from playing PoE. The combat is very boring after some time, playing game is not fun, leveling is not fun, grinding is not fun, even creating new characters and trying out new own builds is not fun, becouse they all strongly depends on your items and gems. The more you play, the more unrewarding the game is. Items are very generic and boring. Same with skills.

The PoE is simply like very strong drug with horrible effects. This game is very very very unrewarding and not fun to play in long term.

I recommend you to try PoE, becouse it is free game. It will be most propably fun for you at least several hours. Maybe you will be adicted on it for very long time. But if you want to play PoE seriously, you have to be nolifer.

Mostly the same thing every other ARPG has but the skill system is out of control, the crafting is so large as to be mostly meaningless and the boss battles work the exact same way every time with just another paint job. It is clear this game is designed for MMO even though you can play it solo.

The boss battles are probably the worst (or close to it) of any ARPG I've ever played. The all work the exact same way and are guaranteed for you to die. Bosses do some mediocre attacks a couple of times and then do some high powered attack that is sometimes avoidable but often not. If you don't die immediately then you'll need to regen health. Rinse and repeat. Laster bosses also have an area of effect attack that pretty much instantly kills you irrelevant of resistances or anything else. My resists were maxed and I died every time. Early in the battle they tend to affect an area of the (already small battleground) but as the battle goes on they get bigger until they cover the entire field. So there is no defense against this attack and you die. After a while the boss becomes invulnerable and summons minions. This is where you're supposed to recover your health/mana but they some literally entire screen fulls of enemies such that you generally get overwhelmed and die. Even worse is that when you reenter the area they are already on top of you. I died multiple times as soon as I entered the area before I could even move. The boss battles are plain awful. The best choice is to get up close and wail on the boss until you die and then spawn back in. Nothing else works.

The next issue is that the devs haven't gone to UI 101 training. When you die you get 2 options: return to town or return to checkpoint. The default is town but that almost always involves tracking back through areas (which have probably respawned). The correct choice is checkpoint but if you're mashing buttons to try to attack someone when you die it is read as return to town and so you get screwed over. Every UI person knows you don't put the least popular choice first and choices that have consequences should never be applied just because of a click. I thought games were past these poor UI issues??

ARPGs are loot based and the loot in this game is pretty poor compared to others. This game is clearly mass RND but most stuff you find late game is worse than what you have now. Most ARPGs start spitting out better equip later in the game but this game keeps spitting out useless stuff. The equipment itself can be good but mostly doesn't help you in larger battles. This is where the crafting comes in. There are so many different pieces of crafting that it is insane. You need it all though because each crafting has minimal impact on anything. It is like the devs knew this was a problem so many crafting items are simply for taking a normal item and making in magical. A better idea would simply to improve your loot system. I never created a single item that was anywhere near as good as what I had.

The skill tree is out of control as well. Skills are so far apart that to get the ones you likely want you're going to be snaking through useless skills. Most all skills provide bare minimal usefulness anyway. +5% dmg here, +2% health there. Nothing is overly useful in this tree, if you can find it to begin with. It is clear this has evolved so you know can put "jewels" in your tree. But only if you select useless skills to get there. jewels aren't worth it. Again it is like the devs know this so they hand out respec points like there is nobodies business so you can change your mind. I never used them and had 21 by end of game.

As the game evolves they add new features which could be interesting but all of them are poorly described, scatter everywhere and rarely useful. I can't count the times somebody said I should go here and I went there just to find out it was to clear out yet another area to get something that I had no idea the purpose of. There comes a point where you should just start removing things that are old, stop adding to the chaos.

The enemies are traditional but in later acts it is clear the devs just pump up the damage and hp to add the challenge. Nothing new here. Even worse is that "uniques" appear around almost every corner and they tend to be more bullet spongy. To the point that I would run away from certain classes of uniques because they weren't worth the fight. There is serious balancing issues in later acts for no real reason. The whole level guide on the map means nothing.

Overall this is an OK RPG (at least early on) that stays entirely too long (act 5+ is equivalent of higher difficulty in traditional games), has poor loot, meaningless skills and crafting, and boss battles that are just unfair to a single player. Later acts bring this game way down.

Path of Exile is the best modern hack n slash I've played. The visuals and sounds are well done and the combat and interface are second to none. Player skill combinations and character builds are as numerous as you can imagine. Which is good, because the maps and enemies present an ever-changing threat, and adaptability is key. This is the game I've been waiting for for ten years.

The game also allows a ridiculous amount of customization when it comes to character builds to the point where it's viable to use a ranger to create a 2 handed charging swordsman due to their increased dexterity.
Unfortunately this game also has some problems firstly it's really hard to understand and get into the game from the start. the passive tree is a huge mess for newcomers which means most likely the first and second character may become throw aways due to bad point distribution and while there are refund orbs it's generally faster and easier to simply recreate a charecter then purchasing enough to reset an entire tree.
Second the game has no auction house and currency instead it uses different orbs that each have a use in improving equipment as tradable currency this makes it very hard for newbies to effectively trade for what they want without getting scammed or being clueless on the matter as well as making it very difficult for players who don't use fanwebsites to purchase items.

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

Add that to the fact that is has smooth combat, (very) regular updates, huge talent tree ('talent forest' seems more appropriate), actual difficulty and no AH... Yeah.

There are problems with the game for sure, but comparing PoE to any other ARPG out there makes those issues easy to overlook. Put in other terms; If D3 has a 88 meta score, then PoE deserves a flawless 10.

But as you got to know her better the illusion falls apart.

PoE had the potential to be the best ARPG ever.
But it is far far away from that in its current state.

So what is wrong with PoE?
For starters the most important thing in an ARPG is the gameplay quality. There is no point in complex mechanics if the game is not working properly, or not responding to your commands. PoE suffers horrible in terms of gameplay.

DESYNCH: imagine you play Mario, and on the other side of the wall there is a small monster wandering there. When you get there you will need to pay attention to it, but no need to worry now because it is not near you. And Bam! "GAME OVER" !?
Well it turns out that this monster was not far away, it was actually near you, even better actually you were not even where you thought you were!!
The screen position of your char and enemies may always be wrong in PoE, and if you rely on the information on your screen you will die.. ALOT!

You may ask "But if screen information are unreliable, how do I maneuver to avoid things in fight?"
Well game saves you from that problem, because DESYNCH is almost certain when attempting to maneuver away from enemies, and especially doing that with high move speed or with mobility skills. So you simply dont even attempt.

COMMAND RESPONSE: PoE is a "pick a skill/spell and spam it whole game" type of ARPG. Nothing but nothing pays as well as overfocusing a single skill for DPS. Also skills not having cooldown, and reaching ridiculous attack/cast speeds like 2-10 per second; only viable way of sustaining DPS is spamming without interruption. So even if you had 2 skills it would not be possible to use them consequently.
So we do spam in PoE. Now the real problem; game has no command queueing code, and completely ignores the commands given while spamming attacks. Everyone in game uses auto-cast supports for their auxilary skill for that reason.

BLAND MONSTERS: PoE has a very boring monster design, they just rush to you with a single attack/spell. ONLY utility monster in game is necromancer to raise back undead. As there are no utility monsters to drive difficulty up, as you progress game difficulty increases only by making monsters deal more damage. Spike damage scales so ridiculously that you get one shot by everything unless you invest %70 of your passives to increase max life or reaching life nods.

TRADE FOCUSED GAME DESIGN: Drops are based on trade oriented economy. So it is as bad as D3 AH. But it is even worse because game does not have an ingame trade system other than a horrible trade chat, so ALL players use an external trade find site named poe.xyz which is exactly same thing as AH.
Trading 15 mins will get you gear which you can not get by grinding for 10 hours.

In conclusion PoE is an ARPG where you should
    not try to maneuver mobs,
not rely on position of enemies or your char on screen,
spam a single skill keeping everything else in autocast,
increase max life nonstop to avoid one-shot kills.
Also trade oriented drops are as bad as D3 AH.

That is not what I expect from an ARPG.

The former system was possibly the best endgame of any title in this franchise, and they replaced it with a bizarre, unintuitive structure that is just simply worse in every way. I'd try to explain it in detail, but that would require writing a small guide, so I'll just state that the new version of the mapping system adds nothing of value to the game while simultaneously making it even more obtuse.

At the same time they added this new endgame system, they also added one of the most poorly designed bosses I've ever seen in my ~30+ years of video gaming. The boss, Sirus, involves fighting the boss for maybe 10% of the encounter and dodging pools of bad stuff on the floor for the remainder of the time. The boss isn't even on the screen the majority of the fight. He could also kill you with abilities before the ability's animation played, and the deadly pools could block the entrance to the area, which prevented you from getting back into the fight after you died. They have made some changes to this fight in an attempt to make it less frustrating and buggy, but it's still bad.

A few days ago, Path of Exile released their new league, "Harvest." It basically consists of a farmville-style mini-game that's rather unrewarding and largely ends up being an annoying time sink. The system involves planting seeds of various tiers in a garden, with different pylons and storage tanks and dispersers all strung together to optimize the process. It's not terribly difficult to get the hang of, but it simply isn'y fun, the rewards aren't fantastic relative to the time you spend, and nobody plays an action role-playing game for this sort of gameplay. The consensus is that this might be Path of Exile's worst league ever.

I'm not sure what is going on over at Grinding Gear Games, but I feel like they're headed the wrong direction with their development of PoE. It's possible that the talented folks are working on Path of Exile 2, which leaves the B team working on the current game. I hope that PoE 2 has some better ideas implemented into it, or I might have to give that a pass. As for the current game, I think I'm done for the foreseeable future, which is a shame considering how much money I have sunk into it.

I love this little game. It brings much to the genre and really rewards the player. It lacks an Epic feel to most encounters that Diablo 3 delivers and the story is rather poor and cliched. But it plays well and the skill tree is very impressive indeed. Value for money is off the scale.. Get it.

The story is crap... but as always, nobody cares about the story in ARPGs, decent music/sound effects, D2-like revamped graphics (yeah ... ok ... but this is 2017, not 2007) ... but let's talk about the game pros and cons:

Honestly, after 1 week of gameplay and about 30 hours on it, i can only find 2 good points about the game ... first is the absence of a primary currency (no golds or whatever money you name) and the fact that build/characters/classes are not linear and can be built in whatever way you want, making the game hyper customizable.

The cons are reeeeally to many. The story is really short ... ok, you don't look at the story ... but it's really short ... so is the content that is available to be grinded.
Too many stats, none are easy to be understood. Loot sucks, you drop too many trash items, too many secondary currencies ... so many things that must be learned about the game to be played in a good way .... and so we come to the main flaw of this game: IF YOU ARE A NEW PLAYER, BE READY TO WASTE THE FIRST X HOURS OF THE GAME ... because nobody is going to somehow guide you towards leveling your first character in a good way, you will waste passive points like eating candies ... i'm tired of writing this **** 3/10 is even too high for this game, iet's say 3/10 just for trying to be a good D2 sequel, but overcomplicated stuff is not going to work, in the long run.
Props: it's pretty much F2P, but botting is everywhere.

I use the term "game" loosely because in reality I think what they did here was create a world, and let a bunch of game players loose in it. The character development is refreshingly complex and simple at the same time. Please people, if you have zero dollars to spare try this game out. That's right it is free and it is NOT pay to win. This game looks like crap, feels like crap mechanically, and has some of the most annoying concepts which seem overly rebellious against games like Diablo 3.

The items are so overly complex that getting upgrades comes so rarely once you start to level up more. What's even more annoying is that 100 items are commonly on screen and literally 0 of them will be of any use whatsoever.

Getting an item with the exact things you need is borderline impossible. I'm not going to get into it in detail, but basically theres infinite combinations of sockets which are very important and you commonly need a very specific setup for them, which requires overly specific items.

There is awful lag/desync issue and yet you are punished on death by a 10% experience penalty. I very rarely die due to a mistake I made, but commonly die due to desync and I lose 20 minutes of experience at higher levels.

There's also no respec option. At all. If you end up making mistakes with your character build, you may as well delete the character. Same thing if they significantly nerf a skill, since you have to build all around one or two abilities.

It makes me mad that they cling on to these archaic game concepts:

    -No Respec
    -Punishment on Death
-No easy way to trade (yet trading is sooooooo overly necessary)

That's another big part of it. Trading is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY and is basically the only way to get to true end game.

When you hit the higher levels, you expect that your self-found 1000dps is satisfactory, but then you learn that you actually need 40k dps.

    Cons:
    - Graphics and effects can feel a bit dated compared to some other RPGs
    - Don't expect a breathtaking storyline with interesting dialogues and character development. This game is about building a character and hacking through piles of brainless monsters as efficiently as possible.
    - Playing the same character gets boring after a while - once you acquire your end-game gear and level all your skills gems, there is not much left to do but farm maps and try to acquire more wealth.
    - The level of micro-management and skill that is required in the combat is comparatively low (exceptions are a few end-game bosses).
    - The RNG of drops or crafting luck can sometimes feel unfair
    - Desync problems can be very punishing for some people

The pros in my opinion outweigh the cons. Definitely a game you should try if you like old school hack and slash RPGs such as Diablo 2 and its various clones. For me it took 2 years of playing to finally get bored and move on to something else.

Pros: its free, dark Gothic style, reminds me a bit of Diablo 2, fun to start with.

Negatives: frustrating waypoint system especially near bosses. Not suited for solo play (especially with Act 2 boss onwards) as bosses/mobs become incredibly hard. In game trade system confusing and clunky. In game chat annoying. Character stats system confusing and complex easy to get wrong first time.

Grinding through mobs later in the game gets incredibly hard. Equipment socketing is confusing at first. Player deaths are not handled very well especially near boss fights where you need to fight your way through massive map of monsters to reach the boss if you die without having a portal open. Inventory system feels like a chore and constant juggling for space. Desync is frustrating beyond belief when fighting large mobs or an end boss. Maps expire too quickly often within minutes the map you just portaled from resets and you lose the portal (especially annoying if you just portaled from a boss fight!!)

Final Opinion: yes its free (which is a big plus), but for me the negatives way outnumber the positives. I ended up uninstalling after finding myself not enjoying this game at all. It's a shame, because if just a few of the negatives were fixed (especially with boss waypoints) I might consider coming back to it.

After the 15th time it just got old. Each update added more desyncs and some skills are unusable in builds because it will just get you killed. Walk in a room and try to run away? Oh you are back in the room. Try to edge into a doorway to fight some monsters and didn't even enter the room? You in the middle of the room now even you've never been there. Constantly. Sad, because I could really excuse the overly pointless grinding for the sake of fun, if the game didn't have artificial ways of killing me. This isn't a 8 or 9.. It's a 7. It would have been a 9 in 1999, because that's where this game borrows most of it's uninspired gameplay from. It's 2013 and games need to be more technical this. Loved the skill tree; something like 1200 nodes of incremental skill/attribute boosts... obviously designed with the long, long term player in mind. The long term play is what starts detracting in my view, but keep in mind it's FTP so what do you expect. Before I forget, I will state that this game runs like a top. I suffered a few fatalities due to "lag" issues, but I have had those in just about every server-based game I have ever played. Not a real problem for me anyway. Life of a gamer and all that....

I took one character to level 45 and "finished" the game as it stands now. While I had a blast in the 3 weeks or so I played it, I found that sifting through the literally thousands of pieces of gear that would drop in a night's gaming got to be slightly tedious. Also tedious to me is the prospect of going through the gameworld again, albeit at a harder difficulty. I've seen the 3 act gameworld, found it uninspired if really nicely rendered, and it holds no more charm for me somehow.

The characters on the other hand I found to be a little more imaginative, eclectic if goofy in spots, but altogether decent and interesting.. The mobs were well thought out, nicely rendered for the most part, and even beautiful art in a few cases. In my case, it gets kinda stale after slaying 1,000 identical mobs in 5 minutes, most of whom will drop some utterly useless gear. I had to laugh when I found a piece of armor that actually increased the amount of loot by 11 percent. I distinctly remember thinking to myself
"My God, who in blazes would actually want to look through more of this stuff?"

Maybe I'm looking for something a little more cerebral in a game..... I'll shorten this up a bit by saying that POE is a very well made ARPG with enough fresh ideas to keep you interested for a while. It IS a slasher, AND a grinder make no mistake, if you're looking for a classic story or real rpg elements you'll find hints of them here but not much more. This game is about combat, levelling, and wanting to invest the endless hours into multiple builds of your character. In the area of build customization, I will state that it has the most advanced skill tree that I have ever seen. The amount of work that went into this facet alone must be staggering. This would be better suited to you if you are into hardcore gear swapping, trying out builds and kits, and grinding... I had good fun on the first play through, but can't seem to get interested in another go, regardless of the fact that GGG has innovated again in their of randomization of map orientation so that at least you get a different physical perspective on the 3/4 iso field whenever you replay a map.

Final thoughts: Great innovation in a few areas, lots of fun, EXCELLENT coding, I feel that if GGG can expand the best ideas in this game the sky is the limit. As it stands, this level of quality in a ftp game is almost unheard of. If it were a standalone retail game the first 40 hours of gameplay would get a 70 something from me, because I just don't get into the hack n' slash that much, but seeing as how it's free and I had a really good time for a couple weeks I'm going into the upper 80's.

The lasting impression I get is that GGG has enormous potential and some serious game creation juice to pull this off. I will be listening hard for news of their next venture, if only because my personal taste is not along the lines of staying with POE. They currently have "it". These guys could make a Baldur's gate for the next generation, and coming from me that's saying a lot. There are improvements that could be made, but there is some really good stuff here.

I still sees the ghostly pirates when i closes me eyes...... yaaaaargh....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I used to like this game.

A long time ago, in a world slightly less crazy than our good ol' 2020, this game wanted to do what Diablol did not do. People were starting to get pissy with Blizzard for some of their D3 shenanigans, and rightfully so. This game promised depth, a vast end game, and massive customization. It delivered, was free, and had no loot boxes or p2w mechanics.

It's 2020 now. Some *brilliant* person at GGG decided to sell out to Tencent. Now the game feels like a vast wasteland. We still don't have trade improvements, everything destroys your character to encourage you to grind much, MUCH more to actually get anywhere, there's too many outdated league mechanics bogging down the game and forcing you to buy stash tabs to be competitive, the devs SUCK at making the game fun anymore (I'm looking at you, Sirius the Dankener), and in place of any positive aspect, we got loot boxes. Yay, we got loot boxes!

Good luck with your "new" PoE without a new Diablo to rip off of. I can't wait to see all the cosmetic options funneling money to China.

I had heard soooooo much about this game and how it was everything that D3/Marvel Heroes/Torchlight etc etc wanted and tried to be. It was finally bringing back the true spirit of D2....yea, not really. Its not a terrible game, and its worth giving a shot simply because its free to play and reasonably fun for awhile. I mean it has a huge skill tree offering amazing options and customization, huge amounts of skill gems that add to variety, any class can be anything! Sounds fantastic....

... but it all is smoke and mirrors. Trust me, go ahead and try to customize your character through the skill tree without exact duplication of a cookie cutter build listed on forums....it will be an effort in futility and leave you frustrated restarting characters over and over. Try and make a high dps character by going for the dmg/crit nodes and skipping most of the 8% life nodes, I dare you. 9 out of 10 viable builds will go like this...pick up all life nodes and either blood magic or eldritch battery...done. Now for all the skill gems...well, simply join some random groups and see how many lightning strike/ethereal knives/spectral throw builds you see compared to anything else....there are a few other builds, but not many...again 90% of the skill gems you'll never see used.

Basically you can either role some form of a tank build or you can role anything else and never see past normal difficulty. The combat while not bad is the same thing every other arpg does, spam 1 button, only way mobs get harder is increase hp/damage/resists. The orb currency is good in theory but really is just a pain, as someone said earlier...farm a bunch of low orbs, trade for higher orbs, then trade those higher orbs for a couple high end orbs, rinse repeat till you have enough high end orbs to buy something decent.

I know I sound overly critical but I just felt deceived by this game, if it would have just said upfront that all this variety and customization was bulls**t and 99% of its "options" are only really options if you have no interest in progressing I could have dealt with that. But it feels POE really attempts to be complicated just for the sake of being complicated. Spending the time to learn all the systems just to realize its mostly worthless nonsense is a serious buzzkill.

Overall the graphics and the effects are good, but the game has some major problems with fps (FYI, I'm running a mid-high end pc) I got coninuous fps spikes and this occurred not only when the map was crowded and I were spamming stuff, but also while running around alone.
Also, I don't understand the decision of not having a single player or, even better, an offline mode, we all know that guns don't kill people, but lag does.
Another aspect I don't like is the active skill system, an original idea overall, but poorly fulfilled, a good old skill tree would have been better and less confusing imho.
The passive skill tree, however, is a real gem, although is the copy of Final Fantasy X skill tree, but still, is nice, you have to plan in advance what you will become and choose wisely your path, I couldn't wait to level up just to look at the tree and place my skill point.
But let's go back to another unpleasant aspect of the game, the story, is there one? I don't know what to say, honestly, I think it is almost invisible, you just play to reach the next map, that's all, I didn't have the feeling of going on a quest to kill the "evil enemy", just... killing stuff, dropping stuff, having lag/fps spikes, I didn't even finish the game due to boredom.

A very good point is that it can be played virtually infinitely, due to the huge passives tree and the amount of stuff. And it is free. The microtransactions are solely cosmetic.
Personally, I played thousands of hours on the game and, despite I didn't search a lot to understand all the subtleties of the game.

Amazing free to play action role-playing game that easily beats its main competitor Diablo 3 and is more of a successor to the amazing Diablo 2 than Diablo 3 is.
Game has huge amounts of content with focus on endgame, which is where the game really shines.
Player has endless amounts of possibilities of how to build and play his character and the game is simply heaven for theorycrafters.

The developers release major content updates every ~3 months and those updates are usually really significant and give a new spin to the game so its fun to revisit and create a new character even for seasoned players.

Only cons I would point out is bad trading system (although it improved abit in the recent years with the presence of poe.trade).

Don't be fooled, the game is not what it used to be. The company has sold out to the megacorporation Tencent and every business practice they put forward continues to show they are no longer in it for the community but for the money. They put out words that don't correspond with their actions, and think we are too dumb to notice the charade they are putting on in front of us.

Far too many things wrong with this game to list here. To sum it up, it's not new player friendly. Too many broken mechanics., and too many one-shot mechanics out of nowhere.

The biggest problem with this game is they built it around players who've dumped 10,000 hours into the game but gave the finger to those who've spent under 1000. It's best if people stay far far away from this

It's best if people stay far far away from this game and hopefully they fixed all that they screwed up on in Path of exile 2. At face value this game looks good, but it's completely disgraceful once you're out of the epilogue.

On a side note, no game should require multiple 3rd party programs to make it playable. This basically circles back to it not being friendly to new players. If one thinks they can simply just pick up the game and play it through, they are terribly mistaken.

Of course there will be skills that benefit a hunter more, or a witch, but in general you have a single pool of spells that all classes share.

The game is also very unforgiving, you end up making it to max rank, realized you were building like a jerk and the game does not help you at all. You're either forced to find the LARGE amount of orbs of regret, or reroll the character from scratch.

This game is for only the most hardcore of diablo players, and will probably be forgotten by anyone beyond that.

In terms of design, the game is not a 10. However, the game deserves a 10. This is the best arpg experience you will get that is truly free. It even surpasses any other paid arpg I have played before. Playing through all the difficulties, even if it's just once is a totally fun experience. Play this gem.

    Pros
    1. Endless character creation ability
    2. Free game to start
    3. Constant biweekly updates, and real fast emergency patches to fix major bugs
    4. Overall good graphics, and improving with each patch.
    5. Massive passive skill tree- It has over 1450 in it. Many are not needed for your particular build, but it's there for you to choose.
    6. Guild system

    Neutral

    1. You eventually need to buy micro-transactions for stash slots, not free in the end-run.
    2. Drop/crafting system have way to much RNG layers. Need to reduce the RNG v.s. toying with the magic find quality, and rarity. Hard, but not impossible to get anywere with the current structure.
    3. Map system is the end-game. Due to RNG again it's hard to progress in this area. Just as likely to run out of maps and be totally stuck. This last point is being addressed currently.

    Con's
    1. Horrible Trade system- Needs massive changes. Right now it's run by 24/7 players who have the time. It can take hours, or even days to find what you want to buy. And finding a buyer who will sell it without trying to rip you off. The sell side is no better. You must learn to use poe.xyz/ poe.explorer, or your never going to figure out anything. Of-site websites dealing with availability/ prices for buy/sell.
1A- In-game spam trading is the pits, worse thing I have ever seen, no way to even filiter it, it's just endless fast scroll. RMT sites start spamming you too for next 20 minutes.

    2. Desync- Major problem in this game with several of the melee builds like cyclone. Lesser of a problem for casters/ranged.

    3. Lag issues- Dropping, I suspect over the next several months this will be a thing of the past.

    4. No real PVP system for those who care, for those who don't..... no negaitive here.

I do believe that if they fix the trade system, get the drop/craft RNG lessened, and fix desync/lag this game currently has the potential to be the WOW of the ARPG market. However it will only be a niche game (50.000 players) if they don't correct these areas over the next few months. Only time will tell now.

Again overall score 75/100 with potential to be 97/100

Would be 9.5 out of 10 but the huge exception of crafting.
For end game be prepared to farm for endless hours to attempt to upgrade gear. Imagine farming thousands of crafting items and maybe not get premium item upgraded. And it took thousands of drops and crafting items to get there. Now you can trade but there is no formal trading system. If you want a 2nd and 3rd part time job well this is your bread and butter. Want to somewhat gear a few characters past 70, good luck. It is better if you trade constantly for marginal gains, but imagine logging on and spamming trade chat every day getting your for sale equipment listed on 3rd party sites instead of playing.

    5 for Connectivity
DESYNC will kill you. If you like to use skill at the margins in stead of power spamming be prepared to be annoyed. There are really cool races for points for a few mediocre items that are enjoyable but the better I do at these races is most correlated to managing desync. Hardcore leagues you have to really spec defensively and or group. If you play casual for end game a death costs you 10% of a level of experience although it won't drop you a level.

I paid up because I feel like supporting the direction of game design they tried, but they would be much better off as a division of Blizzard getting some bandwidth, proper PR and support charging a few bucks a month. The free to play unless you want cool visuals or reasonable inventory space is weak for long term viability. The made huge leaps from D2 and yet made some rookie mistakes all at the same time.

I can only pray someone comes along and learns from their mistakes. Happily ready to pay 10-20$ a month for that privilege.

    + depth
    + story and world building
+ new content every league (every 4 months or so)
    + decent endgame
+ currency system is innovative and pretty great in theory
+ there's plenty of distinct ways for people to play the game (trader, aura bot, party, solo, SFF, mapper, farmer, bosser, delver, ...)
    - graphics are kinda meh
    - currency system can get frustrating and annoying and kinda feeds back on the paid elements of the game
    - not really F2P even though it's marketed as such (you will more or less need TAB'S etc.)
    - new content gets abandoned in the next league and therefore lacks polish
    - Trading is horrible go play SSF
    - SSF is the way to play but sadly restrics build diversity and requires way more hours then trade leagues
    - ALWAYS ONLINE / wants to be an MMO pretty badly
    - build diversity is rather low and depends on patch, if you wanna clear the game without no lifeing
    - developer went from great indie pal to big corpo with all the pro's and con's
    - pretty annoying developer defender fanbase

There's a great game hidden beneath all the always online / F2P market filth. In an alternate universe this could be the best ARPG of all time, but the way it is now i cant rank it higher then classics such as Titan Quest, Diablo 2 etc.

Hack & slash games are addictive because they follow a simple formula: kill, kill and kill some more. Path of Exile is no different in this regard. During your quest in the perilous continent of Wraeclast you need to slay thousands and thousands of monsters but it never gets boring because there are a plenty of fresh ideas like the very vast skill system and barter-based economy that differentiate it from other similar games. But it's not a perfect game. The story is weak and the difficulty level is too low in the beginning. [Dec 2013]
