This is a clever game and very different from most. I can’t imagine that anyone who scrutinises documents for a living would want to play it in their free time, but they'd probably have an edge over the rest of us so who knows?

It's probably not a game that you'd want to play through that many times, but it is still highly recommended.

This is an amazing, surprising game. I've played a LOT of games over the years, but this one is inventive.

And when you make mistakes, you get these horrible, annoying messages to slap your wrist. More than 2 mistakes and they dock your pay.

At the end of every day, you look at your measly stupid savings and try to figure how you're going to help your cold, sick, hungry family.

THEN, on TOP of that, you have these moral dilemmas. In my first game, I had a husband, everything in order, pass. Fine. Go have a nice day. Wife comes: doesn't have an entry purpose. She starts crying that if you send her back, they'll kill her FINE, go ahead, be with your husband, have a nice day.

FOURTH mistake of the day, pay is docked, take-home ZERO, hungry, sick tired family is not happy, now I'm in debt and it's STRAIGHT to jail!

    Fun. Absolutely gut-wrenching fun.

This game is really unique and I had SO MUCH fun playing it. It is a little repetitive but it still tries to introduce a new element every day.
I really loved feeling that I can help fighting against Arstotzka helping that mysterious man, and yet I didn't want to risk lives of my family. So I balanced on the edge deciding what is a too big risk and what I can try to do. Brilliant.

As a customs official you have the option to play by the book, keep your salary plus some varying bonuses and struggle to keep your family warm and well fed.

But this circumstances, most often than not, encourages you to break the rules and become corrupt by taking bribes and helping out terrorist organizations. It is really a tale of the morals and it opens your eyes on the realities that someone in this world is certainly facing.

As a game, it is really entertaining. You could think it would get old and boring really fast to be just checking passports and admiting/denying entrances, but the variables are greatly increased in short bursts, which makes for a fantastic and engaging experience.

I even work as an Editor in the real world, and I was skeptical to play a game where you need to check for grammatical details and correctness of information - but there I was, I had a blast and played about 4 hours and a half, which was enough to at least discover 10 of the 20 different endings to this game.

    Completely recommended.

I never expected to have so much fun signing passports and entry forms. I never thought customs work would be so exciting and addictive. Papers, Please is proof that games can do the unimaginable. Take one of the maybe most boring and robotic jobs in the world and make it thrilling.
You are a customs worker in the frontier of Artzozka. People will come to you with a series of documents, some real, some fake. You will have to deny their entry, or accept them into the frontier. Make a mistake, and your salary at the end of your day won't be enough to feed your family. For example, a man walks in with a documents that says "Female" on the sex. DENIED. But then, a desperate woman comes in, with not the complete handful of documents, but prays for help as someone is trying to murder her in Artzozka and she needs to leave. Help the woman, and you may not have enough money at the end of the day to save your ill son. Do the job right, and the woman is doomed to death. So many moral questions.
The difficulty of the game is also surprising. You do some sort of investigation with the documents, trying to find discrepancies. This is easy at the beginning, but as the game progresses, there are more documents to look at, and your work space is still the same size, giving a claustrophobic and oppressing look to your job that pairs perfectly with the world in which the game is set.
The art design is gloomy, dark and depressing. Let's not talk about the events. You are doing your job and suddenly all hell breaks loose when a terrorist explodes a bomb on the frontier. This moments are terrifying, as it may be because of you that the terrorist is in the frontier, because you let him pass, and you don't know how the government will react to that.
Once you finish the main story (One month of work, if you achieve to survive and not get fired each day) you have the endless mode. That's right, endless waves of documents to investigate and stamp. It isn't as interesting nor as thrilling as the main story. So, yeah, there isn't really much replayability in this game. Unless your entire family died, and you have to go back some days before in the main story to better distribute your money. Yes, there is a lot to Papers, Please than stamping and denying. It is a powerful, intense experience. Another Indie Gem of morality, violence a patriotism. Glory to Artzozka!

I first caught wind of this peculiar game when I briefly worked for a small-time website. I decided to look into it for myself about the game and I was impressed by its concept.

Being a checkpoint officer looking at a bunch of immigration documents may seem like it's boring work, but throw in the constant threat of terrorists looking to breach the safety of the wall, coupled with the fact that you have a large family to look after (seeing as how you're the only breadwinner), makes for an unforgettable experience. Trying to follow protocol as quickly and as accurately as possible is much harder than it looks, as your superiors are constantly monitoring your work. For example, the lady you just stamped a visa for had as minor a detail as the wrong gender on her passport. Of course, practice makes (almost) perfect; some days you can get through without a hitch, others you missed a slight detail or two.

The concept is well-built into the story. Especially with a guy named Jorji. Once you've played through it, you'll come to like Jorji as I have. Developer Lucas Pope made a fantastic game and I'll be sure to keep a watch for more title from him.

Although the gameplay is simplistic you will find that the difficulty ramps up very quickly as you are given more documents to sort through. This difficulties compound by the fact you are trying to earn as much money as possible by processing as many people as you can in order to feed and support your family. While this creates a lot of tension in the game it has unfortunate side effect that also makes the interface more cluttered which can have a disadvantageous effect when you are trying to juggle all the different papers, it can become very confusing and very frustrating.

This is really a minor complaint because overall the game is absolutely excellent, the story is immersive and there is a lot of interesting characters throughout but what makes this game so special is its atmosphere, from the RT soundtrack to the excellent dialogue, you legitimately feel that you are a part of a war-torn communist steep.

In conclusion, Papers, pleas is an incredibly unique game that I think everybody should experience.

It’s the winter of 1982 in the Russian-esque nation of ‘Arstotzka’ and you’ve been lucky enough to land a job working for the Ministry Of Admissions. As an Immigrations Clerk, you call up weary, 8-bit people to your booth and greet them with ‘Papers, please.’ The would-be traveler hands you his/her passport, which you inspect and apply either the green stamp of approval or the red stamp of denial. There are a wide range of discrepancies to look out for as you scan through documents and cross-reference them with your rule book, regional data, and the appearance of the person standing before you. Sometimes even all of your skills of deduction aren’t enough and you’ll require fingerprint checks and fully-nude body scans (nudity can be toggled in the options menu). Your job gets harder as each day brings new items on your desk, more rules and procedures you need to follow, details you have to look out for, financial opportunities and moral dilemmas but family is your top priority.

The stakes are raised when you realize that your family depends on you. At a minimum, you need enough daily funds for rent, food, and heat, with other expenses cropping up occasionally. Since you’re paid per interaction, you’re under pressure to quickly process as many travelers as you possibly can within each given work day. This can be tough sometimes as you must balance speed and efficiency. Throughout the game, your character’s personal and professional challenges become more and more complicated as they inevitably start to impact each other. If you slip up or turn in a lackluster performance on the job, you may compromise the security of your nation but it’s your family that will ultimately suffer the consequences.

Living on the borderlines between multiple genres, this is sort of a game without a country but one I’d happily give the green stamp of approval. This game is both stressful and mundane at times but also filled with moments that are interesting, suspenseful, and satisfying. It’s one of the strangest, most unique game-playing experiences I’ve had in a long time and also one of the best I’ve had all year. Glory to Arstotzka!

The beta/demo was already very good. The full version just takes it to the next level. Decisions in your "daily work", which gets more complicated as you progress in the game, are what makes this game interesting. Let the begging woman trough and be punished with getting less money or feeding your sick child? That's what you have to be ready for.

I've never played anything like this before, it gives you a feeling of control and pressure, it executes characters in a way that you would expect if you actually worked at a country's checkpoint. Every decision you make matters, and it doesn't take back talk- if you screw up, it's for good. It's a genius implementation and it makes the game feel really intense. Every day on the job gets harder as the story progresses, making every little detail important. I love the layout of the GUI, letting the player place the papers and documents in their own fashion is great, it gives them the sense of order and control. You really feel like you work in a checkpoint. Now, the story. I won't give away any spoilers, but it's just genius. I like the idea of depending on how many people you get correct, the more money you get, and certain events can effect that. Keeping your family happy and secure is a great way to give you that feeling of guilt when you mess up or get sloppy. The people you meet really feel like real people you would see at a checkpoint. Especially later in the story, where some story triggered events happen, giving you a real visceral feeling of morality. I worked on this game and finished it in about 8 hours, so not a very long experience, but absolutely breath-taking and very worth the price. I highly recommend this game. 10 out of 10. Expand

Having worked in a related field, I connected to some of the people you have to accept or deny, and the moral issues that go with it.

It is unique and original, cheap, and disturbing in a good way. Recommanded, and a good surprise.

For those who consider it too difficult: At first I got a lot of citations because of incorrect issuing city or, even worse, Arstotzkan district, so now I keep a list of those near my monitor. I suppose strictly speaking it is cheating, but then again you memorize most or all of them pretty fast anyway.

Papers, Please is a game that has you play the role of a border agent. That translates into having absolutely no fun allowed, being paid a lousy wage, and having to deal with plenty of people relying on you to get them through, even if in vain. Largely influenced by Soviet/communist undertones, the opening theme is the Arstotzka national anthem a boorish blare of brass, and your primary objective is to scrape what you can from your job to provide for your family.

The beginning of the game outlines the basics for you and lets you do your thing; but increasingly becomes more complicated and vigorous as the game progresses. You will need to finely inspect each document (and eventually, person) for inconsistencies or contraband in the six minutes they give you. You are paid 5 credits per person correctly admitted, and it’s quickly spent at the end of the day on utilities such as rent, food, and medicine.

The hand-holding in this game is minimal; after the rules are outlined for you, you are allowed to screw up twice a day without a penalty, After that, the penalty is 5 credits and goes up from there. With all these bills to pay, fighting the clock can be difficult. If you aren’t expeditious with processing each immigrant or expat, they’ll have to go without food and/or heat for the day.

Besides family business, the emotional impact the player receives from the game is extremely subjective. You could get all emotional and illegally allow a man’s wife across the border as easily as you can refuse her entry for having no valid passport. Apart from a few specific moments, there is no reprisal against you for following the rules against your own values.

In that regard, you are given a wide assortment of choices to make throughout the game, especially in the later days (levels). The legal option is not always the best choice, but neither is the humanitarian one. Everything beyond what has been spelled out in the rulebook is a grey area left for you to decide, and often someone else’s to deal with. Above all else, you must provide for yourself and your family. Failure to do so results in a game over, but you’re always able to retry the same day again, or start anew if you wish.

Sound and graphics aren’t necessarily given a emphasis in this game. It’s not necessarily a bad thing; the visuals are minimalist (similar to that of the early SNES era) and the audio for dialogue is composed of little more than a few unintelligible soundbytes, but they both serve their purpose in purporting a bland atmosphere for a game whose mood is purposefully bland.

Papers, Please is an anti-fun simulation of an occupation; somewhat like Hilton Ultimate Team Play. Your ability to be swift, accurate, and conscientious is constantly tested, and your fate is ultimately decided upon these three attributes. You are bound to slip up one way or another on your first run through, but your ability to compensate for it and excel all depends on your willingness to do your job well. After all, there is no room for slackers in Arstotzka.

I found myself getting utterly ruthless, ignoring the pleas of desperate pixelated people with dodgy paperwork, detaining them without mercy in order to get a tiny bonus so that my family might eat another day. It has a surprisingly profound emotional effect for a kind of real-time strategy game with incredibly basic graphics.

There are lots of different endings to aim for too, apparently. I haven't even yet played it out to a favourable conclusion, having been arrested, blown up or seen my whole family starve. Brilliant indie game, reasonably priced too. Never has a grinding dead-end job simulator been such fun.

It adds depth by not just giving you moral choices, but financial choices. Will I be better off accepting a bribe but getting a citation? Should I sell that watch or should I keep it? And the moral choices start early on, can you tell if they're telling the truth that if yo deny them they'll get killed, how do you feel about that? Or letting someone in that could kill someone even though they have all their correct documents?

I would have liked a real full-screen mode that stretches to my screen. Thrilled that you can buy this game outside of steam. Most of what I encounter playing this game sounds like stories I've only just barely scraped past myself or had related to me by relatives. It's only a low-level simulation, but one that gets you in touch with the era and the times.

    Kudos:
-different types of date formats: easy on the player to pick a date format that's easy to read
    -novel and immersing game
-aesthetically pleasing and well executed despite simplicity
-some merit as teaching aid for social studies class (some language issues)
    -nudity filter
    -surprisingly addictive
    -simple control, easy to play
-do not need Steam to purchase or play this game (huge bonus, which is what made the difference for me here, as I really, really, REALLY, have a seething hatred of steam, origin, and all other gaming clients)

    complaints:
-custom key bindings would have been nice
-there are oodles of more possible "upgrades" to the booth which weren't capitalized on.
-full-screen mode does not stretch to fill screen
-drag-drop areas could have been improved, sometimes documents bounce off of entrant instead of returning to entrants hands.
-only two modes (easy/hard) could have made use of different cash bonuses and different desk spaces to scale difficulty of game.
    -no language filter

    Other impressions:
this might not be 1995, but this game was completely built from start to finish by 1 person. Comparing this against bioshock is like comparing dollar-store dart guns against an Apache helicopter chin-mount. The only thing the two have in common is that they were games. It's incredibly difficult to manage on one's own to create a game without a whole production team supporting you, and that's why bioshock, europa universalis 4 and battlefield 3 cannot be used as comparisons. You don't compare a high school wrestler against a multi-titled world champion. The categories are completely different in scope. This is a very well-done game given the budget, staff and concept, and spectacularly executed. Whoever has unbridled condescension without actually pointing out short-comings of the game, especially by comparing it against wonders like Battlefield, Bioshock, Call of Duty or some other over-hyped and over-hyped re-skinned and fundamentally unchanged for the past 10 year old concept crap, believes they can do better is urged to make the attempt under the same conditions as for this game.

    Things to watch out for:
Sequels, either real or spiritual. The only possible way a sequel could be any good is if you really enjoyed this game, and I mean REALLY enjoyed this game, or if you haven't played this game yet. It would not be worth spending more than $10 for two of the same thing. (so, as I always say, do your research well, because BF3 does what CoD does, and DotA2 does what LoL does...... if you are going to spend your money, spend it on the best candidate, not on both. If you are reading this when there are (spiritual) sequels running around.... well.... refer to play-throughs on youtube.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Papers, Please is an excellent game. It has a beautiful art style, wonderful music, and a story unlike any other. Although the concept of completing paperwork may be boring to some, but the game keeps you on edge, from the beginning to the end. This game may be difficult for some, but the thrill of it all is finding out what is going to happen next. The controls are unique, and you can drag papers around freely, making the game a fair simulation, and all of the documents are unique for every person that enters the checkpoint, so every person has their own story, and personality, for that matter.

There are only a few things that agitated me while playing this game: The time bomb event was tedious, and really required either the mind of a genius, or a lot of patience. But that didn't ruin the entire game for me, as it only happened once and never again.

The story is enhanced by the multiple side-stories; The largest being you having to take care of your family. You receive payment for doing your job quickly and flawlessly, and the home you are given needs to be paid for. There is one man who reappears multiple times trying to sneak drugs into your country, Arstotzka, and you have to stop him. There also are the country coins, which can be collected by allowing certain people into the country, when their documentation is not completely correct.

For $10.00, this game is certainly worth the price. If you purchase this game, which is highly recommended, then try to find all 20 endings. Good luck!

While the game's only real mission, is to stamp passports, either allowing people into your country of Arstotzka, because they have the correct paperwork, or not because there is something fishy going on. However, there is clearly an ethical test that the developers put you under while playing (e.g. A woman wants to come in to your country, but doesn't have the correct paperwork. However, she is a refugee from another country and will be killed if she is forced to return by your denial of her entry. Let her in and receive a citation which could lead to a penalty of tickets because she has the false paperwork, or don't grant her entry, condemn her to death, and do your job correctly). In amongst, the normal masses wanting access to your country there is a choice you have to make. A moral and ethical choice, and this is where the game's main strength lies.

There are a total of 20 possible endings, so there is plenty of replayability for players who want to experience all of them, but on various different occasions, you have to decide whether to complete your job correctly, and support your poor, starving and cold family, or let your morals take over and do what you believe is right. It really is fantastically done, from an emotional and ethical perspective.

Overall, an impressive game made by an indie developer who has shown he has lots of potential. Definitely not for everybody, as it takes a certain degree of patience to enjoy it, but if you think you would, watch some videos of it, as for £6.99 on steam, it will be a waste if you dislike it.

This game gets a 9 because of the fact that the time is fast and does not give you enough time to probe over every little thing your supposed to, also the fact that your desk gets cluttered with all the paper work. Think punching passports is your kind of game? Well? You'll be sorely disappointed with this stunning game! Because, despite its atrocious-sounding premise, it's not as egregious as you think it is, because in fact, it's a psychological puzzle that plays with your emotive side wonderfully and it's just not all about being a passport puncher.

At the end of the day, you have a family that you need to keep healthy, fed and warm. An interesting thing, is that sometimes people can act as a moral compass. One time, a woman passed and she said that she needed surgery, although she didn't have the necessary papers to enter the city. Hardly, I stamped her passport "DENIED" and basically doomed her. This seems cut and dried, but dilemmas are thrown into the mix that test your conscience. Do you heartlessly follow orders, or do you let a woman slip through when you discover she'll otherwise be subjected to sex trafficking and possible death? If you show some compassion your family might have to go without food for a couple days. Your decisions affect how the story progresses with 20 possible outcomes.

You play as a man who is a border control agent who must check the entrants passports, paperwork and quotes carefully and you must detect any errors and do the according actions.

This may sound like one of the most dullest games ever made when I describe it on that level. You see that's just the game's surface. Behind that there is an incredibly depressing and dark story around you that you yourself has a significant impact upon the world depending on your actions. I'm not going to disclose the story but you must stamp enough approved passports in order to get enough money to feed your family and your work involves Terrorism and you are under an extremely authoritarian and corrupt government.

Near the end of the game I was so stressed and pressured that I ended up absolutely loving the game... This game shouldn't be spoiled to you in any way because the story is so much more effective when you are involved and you make the decisions (Which actually takes place in your work place without changing the game mechanics).

This game straddles somewhere between a Spot-the-Difference and a Puzzler, and despite the purposefully simplistic pixelated graphics, it portrays a grim and desolate world, while also offering the faintest glimmer of hope.

You work as an Immigration Official (probably the first game ever that tries this), just trying to do your job on the border between Kolechia and Arstotzka, amidst the threat of smugglers, terrorists, and basically anyone the Arstotzka officials deem unworthy at the time.

Initially, you'll be tasked with just checking out if the immigrants have the correct papers, and the details within them check out, and so on. The amount of things to check up on steadily increase by the day, which adds to the stress of time management. Do you quickly rush through stamping APPROVED or DENIED to most people without a cursory glance? Or do you fret over every detail, ensuring that you're doing the right thing and letting no scum in?

The problem with the latter, is that you have a family to care for back home, which you'll manage at the end of each day. Food, heating, medicine; this all requires money, which you'll only get from admitting worthy people into the country. This is difficult to prioritise, especially if you make it later into the game when less genuine people are admitted.

Thankfully, there is some great humour sprinkled in to offset the cruel conditions, mostly from the lovable old man Jorji Costava... damn you, you old sneaky rascal.

Overall, there is some replay-ability, due to the harsh set-up which may take an attempt or two to get the hang of. Also there are many different endings that are possible, depending on the choices you make.

    Glory to Arstotzka.

Either you're intrigued by the concept, curious just how they can manage to make such a boring idea into compelling action, or you're instantly repelled by the premise, and rightfully so. This is about as indie as indie games get, and also as brilliant as they get. It takes such a simple thing, and wraps it up in politics, real-world parallels, and perhaps even some genuine feels to make you feel more invested in the fate of a fictional immigration officer than you ever would about a generic grimacing action hero.

But drama and intelligence aside, it's also surprisingly fun, with a very smooth difficulty curve that makes you feel your own skills improving just enough to meet the game's increasing demands. It even comes with some bonus high score modes that you could conceivably see yourself playing. It tells an interesting, branching story through simple means while also somehow managing to make boring real life work into entertainment I want more of. This is pretty much the epitome of why I love the indie game market despite all its warts.

This is the kind of indie game that I really like... it's obviously low-budget, and the graphics, interface and sound are totally old school. Yet, it doesn't matter, as the game itself is pretty unique and interesting... maybe even addictive.

Basically, it's an exercise in concentration. Each day, your job as a passport-controller becomes more difficult. At first, there are like 2-3 things to watch out for. Each day, a new thing to observe and look out for is added, and so you need to remember more and more things to watch out for. Some of them don't come up for quite some time, but once you get too careless, you miss those things and fail.

Fortunately, you can mess up a few times each day without having to pay a fee from your measly pay. Then again, the more complaints you get, the worse it gets, as there also is some kind of inspector who will judge your efficiency every once in a while.

I recommend to write down the issueing cities from each region on a piece of paper... otherwise, you might lose quite some time checking every time.

I have played this for 5 hours so far, in two sessions, and I notice that it really can eat away at your ability to concentrate, so I think this is best played casually... do like half an hour at a time so you don't burn yourself out.

I really like the theme, as it DOES make you think a bit about how unfair the system in that country is, and you have to make some harsh decisions. There even are a few puzzles in there in the story-mode.

Kudos to the developer... this is a fun little game, and to me, the old school graphics don't matter at all, as the core of the game is very well thought out, and it's fun!

The way in which controls, visuals and story-telling work together to give you the impression of life under an inescapable, oppressive regime is marvelous. Even though your character essentially never moves from his spot, through his job as a border control official you get to experience the practical impact of abstract bureaucratic policies. What does it actually mean to deny a family member access to their loved ones, to possibly send someone back to their death just because your rule book says you must do so?
This game gives you tough choices and makes you think about how governments treat their citizens and people from other countries in a world of nation states. It makes you question the way we perceive of people that seem strange to us but who are also just trying to get by and live some kind of a decent life. It is this social and political significance for which I especially applaud the developers and I hope they will continue to make such great games.

It's not as verbose as other story-focused games, yet it's very emotional, and managed to tell a story through your actions. Who knew that taking on the role of an immigration inspector could be so nerve-wracking, yet so rewarding at the same time. You just spend your time behind the desk; you approve or deny visas, and wish that at the end of the day, you've got enough money to feed your family some bread.

With your role as an inspector, you get to choose the fate of the immigrants and the country. People desperately want to get inside, and they'll do absolutely anything for an approval. Sometimes, more extreme solutions come into the minds of people, and they'll just climb over the border to be shot by guards. If you fail your duties, the country temporarily goes into a state of disarray, and employs tighter security measures which makes your job harder. A harder job means more papers. More papers means more time observing discrepancies. More time observing discrepancies means that the immigration line moves slower - and a slow line doesn't pay the bills. Don't be surprised if, by the end of the day, your family died of hunger just because you didn't work harder for the country.

It's very interesting to see how something so minimal, could be so powerful. The player works a mere desk job, yet becomes judge and protector of this fictional country. You connect entrants with their loved ones; you give immigrants better lives; you give people a new start - all with a single stamp. It's storytelling at one of its finest moments, and Papers, Please showed what the medium is truly capable of.

Papers, Please gives you a simple task that doesn't ask a lot of you. The game outgrows its mechanics though, by appealing to your moral compass and emotions. This indie game will get under your skin, will have you feeling uncomfortable and have you think about yourself, as a person.

An incredibly impressive little game, from its understated old-school art style to its ability to make you feel uncomfortable with how much you enjoy catching criminals trying to trick their way into your country.

Papers, Please is not only original but fun, too. More papers, please! [Sept 2013]
