Short, but fascinating and surprisingly relaxed puzzle trip into a world full of bizarre creatures and mechanisms.

Paper Beast's origami animals delight, but the resulting game is less than the sum of its parts.

The thoroughly unique Paper Beast can be a real monster to get through with its whip-like controls and occasional difficulty spike, but those who welcome unique gameplay experiences and value memorable moments over a detailed narrative are encouraged to give it a try.

This is undoubtedly a progression in art style and atmosphere from Eric's title From Dust, with manipulation of the landscape a key feature of the gameplay. You'll be moving water, building mountains of sand, melting ice etc. to reach objectives. But in Paper Beast, in VR, this atmosphere and ability to change the landscape you're actually standing in, is much more enjoyable. Visual effects are wonderful, and the simple but effective AI with the various creatures you encounter definitely endears you to the ones you are tasked with protecting. However beautiful it is though, you do find that it's lacking in a overarching plot, and in the end, despite it bringing you on an emotional journey, the conclusion falls a bit flat. Everything just grinds to a halt, and the credits roll and I have to admit I was expecting something a little bit more conclusive rather than the "Thanks for playing" achievement that kinda did the job of telling me the game had ran its course.
All in all, it's a fun and beautiful game, with some stand out moments, but there's just not enough of a game here for it to get a top score from me.

One of the most incredible gaming experiences I have ever had in 40 years of gaming. Abstract, artistic and truly moving...this game left me in awe.
