Absolutely loved the hard-science thematic approach. Unfortunately combat implementation is unimaginative and the two opposing sides have effectively the same units, just with different skins. There's no room for strategy or tactics, just micromanagement of your base and tank-rush tactics. It could have been so much more than it was with just a little more effort. I hope they make an Outpost 3 someday. Full Review »

The game has a nice balance between complexity and ease of play. It is still one of my favorite strategy games of all time. Full Review »

I still come back to it, and use it as a comparison for other games. At heart, it is really a city builder, but It has many 4x components and plays much like a classic RTS. The research mechanic is still the best I have seen in any game. The game play is easy to learn and gains complexity beautifully as the game progresses. The graphics have aged well, although noticeably older I wouldn't call them ugly. There is no music, but the sound effects develop their own rhythm after a while The controls are simple, a mouse will do the trick but hot keys are also available. Has surprisingly good online play for such an early game, after over a decade there is still a fairly dedicated community.Overall a very memorable game, essential to the genre. Full Review »
