This is one of the few games that I would ever rate a 10. The music is incredible, the atmosphere and level design really pull you into the world and hours fly by. It's the kind of game that you must savor like a fine dish. I probably replayed it 6 times. I would pay good money for a remake of this.

Truly a masterwork for its time. Voice, sound assets are superb. Strong and enthralling story line. And the voxel engine makes the sandbox environment strangely organic and unique.

All in this game is amazing. Graphics? They were ahead of it's time. Art direction? Just great. Music? The score is perfect and always fit the game. Plot and characters? Great and u will be interested in story and world until u finish the game. Developers even created the whole language for habitants. Gameplay? Excellent mix of adventure and action. Does any of this matter? No. Everything those before me wrote here is true and you are likely to lose tens of hours in that world, if you choose to try it. Mass Effect could easily learn from it and there are loads of unique working mechanisms and the visor effects like terrain scanning and object/energy source detection are just badass sci-fi stuff. Also if you have ever longed for a quality StarGate game, try this as it is obviously heavily influenced by the original movie. There is also a fan sequel in the making called Open Outcast. Being a part of the dev team for a few months I have to admit I don't keep my expectations high, but the artists on team are awesome and it sure looks pretty nice, so check it out. Expand

This game is one of the best I've ever played and at any rate one of the best sci-fi adventure out there. The graphics look pretty nice for a 14-year old game (high-res patch), there is a nice soundtrack, the actors are brilliant and the story is really nice. I love the characters and while playing you learn a lot about them and the world Adelpha. Nothing, to this day, compares.
A real gaming 'experience' in a rich and intricately conceived world that, for me, still acts as a yardstick for games today.
As one previous reviewer perfectly puts it, "I am still waiting for a game to beat the feeling of Outcast."

Easy the best game ever made. Still no one knows about it, it really makes you lose faith in the industry. There is nothing else like it out there. I am still waiting for a game to beat the feeling of Outcast.

Don't buy into the hype. This is a very obscure and niche game. The graphics did not age well, the movement and gameplay is not fluid. The cutscenes look great for the time, but the story is a miserable trope-fest. Level design is poor; think of a free-roaming, instanced Dynasty Warriors map.

I was told I wouldn't be disappointed by this game, that it still plays well and uniquely, that its still beautiful. Not true at all. The game plays like a free-roaming Crash Bandicoot with guns, and the levels look bland with a low field of view.

If you want a true space exploration and fantasy game from the 90's, try The Dig from Steven Spielberg. I can't get into this game at all.

Dialogues (of which there are many) are fully voiced. But the real star of the game is the beatiful world Adelpha and it's inhabitants. A colorful journey through the history, society and fate of an somewhat alien people and planet and a charismatic protagonist to boot make Outcast a Gem, that was hindered in it's Hall of Fame status by hardware issues and requirements and the Tomb Raider series in it's prime, against which it had to compete.

It's 5.39€ right now. If you can bear older games, you need to give it a shot. World building and charisma are some of the best in gaming history.

This page is pretty silly. To give this game a 10 or a 9, you have to be COMPLETELY blinded by nostalgia.

I got it on Steam for 3 bucks the other day, also due to nostalgia. I had the game on PC when I was 9 years old, but I was too young to figure anything out and was confused and intimated by the open-ended structure. The game was very ambitious for its time and unique in its usage

I got it on Steam for 3 bucks the other day, also due to nostalgia. I had the game on PC when I was 9 years old, but I was too young to figure anything out and was confused and intimated by the open-ended structure.

The game was very ambitious for its time and unique in its usage of voxel graphics, voice-over work for every single character (though it's mostly terrible, e.g. there is no unified approach to the pronounciation of Talan words), and player freedom and choice. It was, however, already a total GLITCH FEST back in 99 and it has not aged well at all. The graphics are not pleasant to look at, the music is VERY repetitive and thus gets grating very fast and there is an INCREDIBLE amount of jank and bugginess to be experienced. I'm talking: The main character entering the swimming animation out of nowhere on solid ground, the game straight up crashing to desktop after a cut-scene, your Twon-Ha (basically alien horse) glitching out and not letting you ride it anymore, which means that you have to spend hours walking everywhere etc etc.

I would really like to finish this game to tie up this loose knot in my gaming career, but it is reeeaaaally testing my patience with this BS. Also, it's a game that practically begs to be played with a guide if you want to complete the side-quests, because you can lock yourself out of doing some of them if you don't do things in the right order and also because remembering which Talan is who and wants what becomes almost impossible if you talk to too many, as they all pretty much look the same.

in 1999, this would've probably gotten an 8 for its scope, dialogue, world design, and just straight-up uniqueness. Buuuuut it is 2020 and a 5/10 is really already pretty generous on my part. Sadly, the remake also doesn't seem to have handled things well, from what I've read. What a missed opportunity.

Outcast is an example of extraordinary storytelling. The whole world history is done from scratch. Developers made an enormous amount of work to breathe life in that project. Language, locations, religion - everything is perfect.

Unfortunately, we will see no sequel, we will still have more commercial projects, not artistic ones like Outcast. But still, we have a chance to play it and play the remastered version.

It's a miraculous game. I can't say less than that.
