    It's no Turok.
I'mma admit right off the bat that I actually had fun playing this. Perhaps more than I should have. But I get told that a lot. Apparently you're only meant to have a 'little bit of fun' over-waxing the floor at a shopping centre. Normal people falling is fun, but when the kid on crutches does the exact same thing - no more fun. I learn things everyday.

For example, today when I was looking for this game on Metacritic I learned that it's had several name changes for no good reason. I looked for the game I played titled ORION: Prelude, but couldn't find it until I realised it used to be called ORION: Dino Horde. And that in itself was a rebrand from ORION: Dino Beatdown. You know that guy in 'The Good Place' that went to hell for being too indecisive? Well, Spiral Game Studios is where he got his training. I can only imagine what ORION: New Circle of Hell they're in for when they die.
So this game released to raving negative reviews. It was more broken than that crutches kid after having a personal introduction to that floor. And while several bugs remain to this day, for the most part this game has since been made a stable experience. Just don't play the Summit map. You shouldn't be playing that anyway. Without the bugs that's still just the worst map. You could say that Summit really peaked in annoying game design.
    i'll see myself out now...
But yeah, other than Summit turning the skybox and half the models completely black, meaning good luck seeing all those pterodactyls soaring around in the endless void, the game is truly playable. Now I don't wanna excuse a dev team for releasing and selling a broken product only to fix it later because, as we now know, this would become an anti-consumer standard practice in the industry. However, I'll let this slide as it was their first game and they seemed to improve this attitude for their next release before disappearing forever. Yea, it's just hard to be mad at something that doesn't exist. Although my girlfriend would disagree with that statement after I cheated on her with my co-worker. I'm an internet funny man. I don't have a co-worker. But hey, the realm of physicality won't stop me from having an imaginary ORION: Post-Lube Inspection. Apparently.
Anyway, video game. I only played the survival mode during my time with this game. There are less-than-a-few players still hopping around these servers. That's a real shame, because those strange times when another person from somewhere in the world did decide to load up this strange game 9 years after release and found my lobby were the best times. There are bots that try to help if no one else joins your game. I specifically say 'try to help' because their only use was as ORION: Dino Bait. They won't repair the generator you're defending, they won't use anything other than the basic rifle, and only rarely will they feel the need to pick you up after you've been downed. No, mostly their job description suggests they should run around erratically like a headless chicken until dinos show up and then they plant their feet firmly and take on the horde with their face. They kill a good deal of them before they die though. That's sweet of them.
This makes a great deal of otherwise optional things an absolute necessity because you are now fulfilling the roles of 5 team members, regardless of which class you pick. Trying to repair the generator will set all the big boss dinos on you immediately, like they're offended by the sounds engineers make. So you won't have a chance to get it back up before the knockback sends you to another map. Unless it's the T-Rex which either chomps you, or if you have the no-chomp upgrade, simply lodges you inside its model where you cannot leave as it slowly nibbles on the salty snack that was your face.
So with all these problems, why did I say I had fun? 2 reasons mostly.
Reason number A: I love most of the environments. It's not the most graphically appealing game, or the one with the most detailed worlds. Yet, most of the maps really do look pretty. I'm a sucker for open spaces and over-saturated colours in everything, and this game REALLY scratches that itch. I also love the look of the jagged and interestingly structured mountains.
Reason number II: Play the assault class and buy the TREK bow. I had so much dumb fun jetpacking around popping off arrows at dinos and watching them fall like Hawkeye in Avengers, except I actually achieve something. Then there's the alternative arrows. If you do manage to get a player in your game do a favour for me, would ya? When they're in a vehicle and least expect it, fly to the top of a mountain a knock out their car with an EMP arrow. The arrows are too small to see and you are way out of sight so they'll never know what happened. And that makes me happy.
So I did have a lot of dumb fun playing this game. I can't recommend it as a brilliant product, but I can tell you to just do it anyway
    Just play ORION: Subtitle Pending

TL;DR at the bottom for those with little time to spare :)

Objectively speaking, this game is meh, it's a bit of dumb fun with friends that can keep you occupied for maybe 1-2 hours. However, given it's price and how easy it is to play. It's worth a couple of bucks, especially if it's on sale. Make no mistake, this game is not amazing, it's not good. It's passable, but it's so much fun!

Even if you get it free, do not take it. Counting sand in beach is much more fun than playing this, there is tons of bugs it and very likely they are there to stay. Best way to play it is to hope it crashes right away so you can do something else.

This game started off really badly in 2012, being one of the worst games to come out that year (the devs even said it themselves), but after 60+ updates and fixes, it has been transformed into a fun game. Plus, it's 99 cents on Steam. Nuff said.

It's pretty obvious that this game is trying to be exactly like Halo...with uhhh, dinosaurs. They really make it no secret either; the graphics, art style, and gameplay are almost identical in every way possible. The layouts of the maps are also very similar, you drive around in vehicles that bare a striking resemblance to Halo vehicles, and oh yeah, you're in space too. Yep, that's right, it's dinosaurs in space. Who woulda thought, right? Even the announcer's voice sounds like they tried to replicate the announcer from Halo. Which I suppose isn't a bad thing, Halo is now dead for the PC anyway, and if you're going to steal from a game, Halo is a pretty good one to steal from. Don't believe me? Well pay the dollar to see for yourself!

Which brings me to my next point, this game only costs a dollar, the price of a cheeseburger. It also works perfectly with a 360 controller, feels like a AAA title from a few years ago, has dinosaurs galore in it, and like I said only costs 99 cents. What more do you want from a game that costs less than a taco? Sure it's got some problems, but they seem pretty minor when you take the price into consideration. Even if you get just a few hours of gameplay out of it, you're still getting a great deal.

So basically it boils down to the community with this one. As with every other 'online only' shooter, 'Orion: Prelude' will need to rely entirely on it's player base to keep it around, and seeing as how the developers seem dedicated to improving it, along with the low price point, I can see this game only gaining in popularity. All-in-all, if you're looking for something familiar, without having to shell out a lot of money, and are really into first person shooters, then you can't go wrong with this title.

The game it self seems to have improved, not much but it has, my low score is from the Developers Attitude towards the games community. Simply stamping a New Name on your game won't fix anything. Claiming the new patch has enough content to warrant a new name when it's not even close to a new game it self is rather sad.

It isn't low enough to have a 36/100, especially for its very low price of 1 dollar, and I advise giving it a shot before deeming it unworthy.

Remember that people put time and effort into producing a game like this, and the fact that they're charging so low causes me to give them even more respect. Overall, I can not say this is a good game, it is very underdeveloped, but it does have content, hence I am giving it a 7/10.

I'm not gonna write a fully-fledged review. Just gonna slap some issues, very very very briefly tell you the gameplay and get to the final score.

ORION: Prelude is still as fun as it was in Dino Horde, however, I've ran into some pretty glaring issues.

Prelude has too many FPS issues and the graphics don't really look all that different from Dino Horde.
There are also lots of lobby issues. You can invite people and they say they can't join the lobby, you make your lobby private and it becomes public for some reason and all that stuff.
I've also ran into some modeling bugs, but I just fiddled with the graphics a bit and they were fixed.

The gameplay is more or less the same as in Dino Beatdown/Horde, just with less bugs when playing the game. You won't clip through walls or fall over the world, no. But you could see some twitchy dinosaur animations and the occassional dinosaur spazm. Controlling vehicles can be a bit tricky for a first timer (you steer your vehicle with your mouse, excluding the tank and mech). You have 3 classes to choose from - Assault, Support, Recon. Assault has a jetpack, Support has a medi-gun (which heals players (duh)) and Recon has a cloaking ability (which makes her invisible (duh))

Music-wise - it's decent. Has some great songs to listen to, but they can get boring real fast. I'd suggest getting your own songs. Though the voices of the 3 classes (Assault, Support, Recon) can become quite annoying over time.

Would I recommend ORION: Prelude to you? Definitely.
Considering the 0.79€ price tag on Steam, I'd say it's a steal.
Seriously, compare the only 10.99€ price tag with the new 0.79€ price tag. Wasn't really worth it before, but now I'd say yes.

Grab some friends too! A 4-pack will cost you 1.99€ only! And no, it's not a discount, it's the real price.

With the next gen physics, allowing incredible feats of vehicular proportions that would terrify the very soul of Evil Kenevil, including being in a vehicle that totally isn't a Warthog from Halo, and having it be headbutted by a tyrannosaurus rex, making it soar so high, even Everest looks like a mere pile of mashed potatoes. If that hasn't stimulated your taste buds for adventure, don't forget the air vehicles, which cost so much and are destroyed so easily by the pterodactyls that swarm you like you're a naked man covered in pollen in a bee sanctuary. There is good variety in the game modes, the devs are constantly updating and it's oare much because you're being bombarded by Rham's or escaping the jaws of a waiting T-Rex. Excellent team game, has some pacing issues and ymmv with the game modes. All over an excellent purchase and highly recommended. Expand

I think the entire community is misleading about this game. It's obviously buggy, the game was released not to long ago. Sure that one little rock isn't a good texture, but if you look at the gameplay it's pretty fun. I think you guys are a little sensitive when it comes to games..

It may be fun if we play with friends for a few hours… but it may be not. There are many games fighting in the FPS genre, and it's very hard to find something worth highlighting in this one.

While Orion: Dino Horde has potential, it will certainly fall short of even modest expectations. If it weren't for there already being quite the track record of bad Jurassic games, I'd suggest that fighting dinosaurs has never been so dull. A shame, since it's evident that the developers put a lot of time into it... it's just too bad they didn't focus on making it fun.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised that ORION: Dino Horde was such a disappointment. The gaming industry has been rife with rumors about scurrilous behaviour concerning a very similar title, Dino Beatdown. ORION: Dino Horde's rough edges suggest that it has been quickly brought to market and cynically shoveled out to gamers in the vain hope that its over the top premise will bring in a few bucks.
