If you have 06 and enjoy it, leave this one at the store. You'll hear the same dialog for the most part, it looks pretty much the same, though the new hybrid controls are an ok addition, just not worth $40. $20? Maybe... If you haven't purchased a game from this series in a long time, give it a shot. I've had some controller issues, but I'm not sure of the cause yet. I don't know what all of these boobs are talking about.. this game is much better than 07. The player animations are so much crisper and all gameplay is devistating. 10 from me!

So disappointing... Graphics/Sound/Interface not updated from 07. The controls actually seem worse. I feel like I have been stolen from.

Great game, only one disappointment that it's very similar to NHL 07, although it has some graphic improvements and some new game features.

I loled at the PC Gamer bandwagon jumping review. NHL08 was pretty solid. But where the hell was PC Gamer these last 8 years when the the NHL franchise sucked? They were busy giving glowing reviews (mostly) to this fading franchise.
05, 06 and 07 are 35% games, not this one.
EA needs to make a PC only front-end, with drag and drop line editing, and all will be moving in the right

As one who is upgrading to NHL08 from NHL06, this is a decent package. I'm very happy that the skill stick was added to the PC version, however, it is disappointing that it is not as dynamic as the PS3 or XBOX360 versions.
The inclusion of AHL franchises and introducing the salary cap to the Dynasty Mode are also nice to see. What is sorely disappointing, however, is that the player

The inclusion of AHL franchises and introducing the salary cap to the Dynasty Mode are also nice to see. What is sorely disappointing, however, is that the player animations on goals, saves, and between periods are almost exactly the same as NHL06. The same can be said about the in-game commentary that doesn't appear to have changed one bit.
All in all, it seems as though EA has phoned this one in, but at least it's not without a few redeeming qualities.

A decent NHL game but has many problems such as no commentary, repetitive gameplay, and not enough game modes. It's great how they put in all these extra European leagues and the AHL, and the dynasty mode is alright, but it is a dissapointment when compared to great NHL games such as NHL2001. I'd go with NHL2K8 rather than this one, shame that NHL2K8 was not ported to PC.

After watching the trailers I was really excited to download this... Bad choice. Identical to 07. Maybe a tad slower and less responsive. I was expecting new player creation and puck control... but no... nothing. I've gone back to 07 and wish I could have my $40 back.

Do you have NHL 07? Then you already have NHL 08. If new music and different-coloured menus are worth $40 to you, then this game is a must-have. The game is near-identical in every possible way. They didn't change a thing, right down to the cutscene animations before, during, and after the game. Embarrassing.

As has been said, this is almost an identical game to 2007 (which was pretty close to 2006 itself). The one improvement seems to be in the physics -- the puck reacts and bounces a little more realistically, and the players hit more realistically... both which combine to make for slightly harder scoring -- something that was needed after '07.

  1. NHL 08 offers up a few control tweaks and minimal updates to the dynasty mode, but that's about it.

Give it a go when it's come down in price if you're desperate to have the new rosters, otherwise stick with 07. [Nov 2007, p.56]

A perfectly adequate console port. [Nov 2007, p.84]
