Considering the modding support Warband offers, this game is useless next to it. Everything that this game could offer, a few people offer with their own free mods. The only thing that was left was the story, which is also quite mediocre. There are multiple story paths you can follow in the game, but none of them are detailed and entertaining enough. Even on the easiest difficulty, when you outnumber the enemy 2/1 you lose every battle. You constantly have to stop in towns because your troops get sick every 2 days, and you can only get around 120 troops for most of the games, while your enemies have 600, even if the have less troops, they still win no matter what.

This game is straight up retarded. I'm assaulting a castle, defeat all its defenders, yet 5 of them manage to successfully repel my army just because I didn't manage to take them out 2v5 or something. So I have to assault the city again, and worse off, the dead defenders magically reappear. This game was designed by a five-year-old.

Of course, it's hardly the only new feature. An entirely new landmass, set of factions, and weaponry are welcome additions, but With Fire & Sword adds nothing substantial to the overall Mount & Blade experience, which is to say is still a good thing since the core mechanics that made this series addicting are still here in abundance.

The Mount & Blade series were never known for story or technical prowess and it never pretended to be, but anybody hoping for this one to break the mold will find little improvements, if any at all. Running on the same engine, With Fire & Sword's technical strength is catering the massive battles, but everything else ranging from models to effects to texture work are all still very poor. Even the land map looks decidedly worse, and the shift to real world countries as factions ensure that the diverse locations you could explore are now limited, since the developers attempted to keep it as realistic as possible. The game this time around attempts to invest player in several plots (depending on your faction) that try their hand in a story, but the lifeless characters and general boringness of it keeps a decent story miles away.

With Fire & Sword carries the same excellence in emulating large scale warfare, often with lines of footmen clashing with cavalry breaking lines. The addition of firearms gives you more strategy, allowing you to formulate lines of muskets to suppress enemy lines, and given that they can also be wildly inaccurate, firearms can't always be relied on. Other than that, the way combat is handled by way of momentum and direction of attack is still highly entertaining and landing blows on horseback is oddly cathartic. Outside of combat, you take on quests ranging from caravan escort to total conquest. The latter is much more fun given that conquest in this game is a great challenge and somewhat of a grind. You are able to affect your relationships from companions to towns to full blown kingdoms, most of which boil down to whether or not you were a jerk to them. The factions, while not as interesting as the diverse set found in Warband, give you enough reason to side with them if you know your European history. The most impressive feat of the overall amalgamation of the mechanics means that no two players game worlds will ever be the same. It's closer to a simulation than anything else, with so many moving pieces that while visually absent, convey that this is a real world that has some place, and that I believe is this series high point.

With Fire & Sword isn't charged for much, so the few additions aren't as difficult to swallow. The mechanics that made this game grindy fun still exist, and are bound to soak up some serious hours. Don't expect much from this entry in terms of taking the next step, but rather riding the success of strong mechanics and features.

The game is fantastic. The fighting mechanics are second to none, and the gunplay is very well integrated, which adds another layer of challenge to combat. The campaign map is pretty much the same as Warband, except of course it depicts real locations. The quest lines are interesting, although still a bit bugged. If you love Warband and are looking for a similar experience, this game is for you.

The most obvious changes are the replacement of crossbows with firearms, a new map and the 16th/17th century setting. This is the time that warfare gradually changed from melee based to firearm based.
(A side note: the setting actually mixes aspects of the 16 century setting with that of the 17th century. The halbediers belong more to the former century and the musketeers/cavalry more to the latter.)
There some other changes. There seem to be more quests and the recruitment system has been overhauled. However, at the core the game is the same and as such has the same problems as the old game, such as a rudimentary battlefield mechanism, a nonexistent storyline, a simplistic dialogue tree, superficial boring personalities and tedious repetitive battles of which there are way too many. And these problems are now compounded by the introduction of firearms.
With muskets you can kill an adversary from the other side of the map and what is more.. he can do the same. In fact the ai is actually better at shooting because it isn't bothered by the fact that from a distance avatars are so small that you can't make them out right.
My first half hour was spend being shot to pieces. The only way to escape that fate is by moving in an unpredictable pattern so the enemy can't take aim properly. In the meantime you either have to try and kill them with your own firearm(while moving about in a random way!) or with your sidearm. Battles turn therefore into protracted hit and run activities in which standing still is an invite to be killed on the spot.
The militia that you can recruit at the start is woefully inept to deal with anything better than looters and once you have enough of them to actually have a chance to win a fight, your army is so slow that you can't catch deserters, brigands and such because they are faster than you. So you either have to fight enemies who are superior to your inept troops.. or hope to corner a band of ruffians, which involves you in chasing them across the map hoping you won't loose sight of them when the night sets in or when they run into a wooded area.
In fact the best thing to do is not to recruit any militia or infantry but to go from town to town to find and hire mercenary cavalry or heroes so you can overtake your enemies or have a chance to runaway from them when they are too strong.
In any event the game seems to promise to become a protracted boring game, like the basic game was, but now you can use firearms and play on a map that represents eastern europe.
The game is neither a good role play game nor a good wargame, because it doesn't implement either aspect well and it amazes me that people actually consider this game to be good.
    But I guess tastes differ..

However, the only problem (so far as I've only played for hours) is that leveling up is too slow. If you are fine with cheats, it won't be a problem for you, but I'm not, so I'm kinda losing enthusiasm. Maybe it's not a game that I should spend ten hours in one day to get a lot of achievements. With Fire and Sword dominates Skirmish combat, making the player plan out a strategy, instead of just charging straight-on like the player might have done in Warband. If the player would charge, he or she would be shot down and end up losing men. Here you could take your cavalry and flank the enemy while the player's main forces are in a gunfight. However, I feel that fortress combat lacks heavily, and is in DESPERATE need of improvement. In fortress combat, you don't have full access to your structure and you can't attack from all sides. The storyline itself is intense, good minor history lesson to those who know nothing of 17th century Poland. Lastly, this game has so many minor improvements that could make Warband a better game, and so many minor improvements from Warband were left out. So, both Warband and With Fire and Sword feel incomplete to me. Expand

But despite this I struggle through to find the good Sandbox Strategy gameplay that I've heard about..
I enter a battle and can either look for them or run away cause enemies are miles away (but somehow upon leaving I still must surrender to them???); so I re-enter and eventually find them. I gallop towards them firing off one arrow then my crossbow stops working - literally nothing is happening when I'm pressing fire (the arrow hits the ground several meters below the targeting reticule anyway), so I run them down with my horse which does 0 damage, and they beat the crap out of me, meanwhile I'm trying desperately to turn my horse or run through them; anything (nothing is happening of course as the controls are unresponsive to say the least). I die and immediately uninstall the game.

    The game is beyond poor.

Ignoring the poor graphics, abysmal animation, terrible controls, and complete lack of a decent tutorial, underneath it all.. the game is just plain bad.

Bandit chasing/killing could've been improved and expanded on.... more quests could've been added.... the romance/dating options expanded.... etc.... This is what people expected with the next Mount and Blade game... instead they backtracked and gutted it all out, focused on 'guns' and new multiple tiers of junk gear and loot with mostly all COSMETIC features. An above-average game from a time period that's really hard to find in current games. It is defected by several unfortunate design decisions and by sticking too much to its literary original. However, Henryk Sienkiewicz's fans and those 17th century warfare lovers should not hesitate to try it.

With Fire and Sword is an expansion that adds very little to the Mount&Blade experience. It's still a solid game, but one would expect more innovation. Still, the hectic battles on horseback leave the player with a brutal appreciation for medieval combat.
