There are various secrets and written pieces of lore scattered throughout the game and I found probably around 75% of these in my playthrough of just under 6 hours. The replayability mostly comes from the different endings that are hinted at by the achievement list and I do want to revisit Moroi to find out whether these hidden endings provide more answers.

Moroi is a dark fable that puts all its weight behind narrative and atmosphere to captivate the player. While its gameplay is limited and plagued by technical issues, the strength of its story and its gothic world-building make for a memorable experience — especially for those looking for something different and willing to overlook its flaws.

Moroi has some very rough edges, but despite that it has an extremely unique visual style and artistic design. If you have a dark sense of humour and enjoy the absurd and the macabre, I recommend it, just keep in mind that you may encounter several issues that may hinder your enjoyment of the game as they hindered mine

With strong competitors already in the market, Moroi tries to make its mark—but not in the way we would have hoped. Its art style is spot-on for this kind of game, and it features charming NPCs, but it stumbles when it comes to keeping players engaged during combat. While it does manage to pull us back in with a few puzzles, the overall experience is a mixed bag.

Moroi has a genuinely unique aesthetic and a distinct sense of atmosphere, but little else going for it.

As a debut title, Violet Saint has done an impressive job of building a world that feels both dark and dismal, but also alive and full of character. Moroi is so much more than just a hack-and-slash, with both mystery and puzzles to solve throughout. The cast of absurd characters and humour keeps things light, even with all the gore, and the action packed combat sequences are bolstered by the pumping soundtrack. Even if you aren’t familiar with Romanian folklore, anyone who enjoys a good grimdark fantasy will enjoy Moroi.

Moroi’s messed up fairy tale setting is undoubtedly rather intriguing, but the dodgy combat and poor puzzles make it a chore to play.

Moroi ultimately feels like a game too caught up in its own surrealism, sacrificing cohesive storytelling and gameplay depth for visual spectacle and provocative imagery. While it left me intrigued, it also left me wishing the journey had offered more than just style and unanswered questions.
