While Monster Rancher 1 deserved additional graphical and audio updates, playing the remastered Monster Rancher 2 is nothing short of fun. The new music-lookup monster creation system is a much needed modernization for the series, the FF Mode is a great way to quickly grind out your monster’s stats, but I fear that multiplayer may be a letdown. I sincerely hope that these remasters pave the way for a modern Monster Rancher installment, because if these remasters are any indication, Koei Tecmo are on the right track.

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX on PC manages to bring two PlayStation classics to a modern system, but the release lacks the polish it needs in features to be an easy recommendation at the asking price. Once some of the PC-specific control issues are addressed, it will be worth checking out. If you're new to Monster Rancher, this is a nice way to get into the series assuming you're ok with some dated mechanics and visuals, but are willing to try something unique.

Monster Rancher 1&2 DX is a blast from the past, letting fans re-experience a classic while introducing new players to the franchise. The big take away is that these games have not aged particularly well. Mechanically, it’s rough around the edges, at least within the battle system. Raising a monster is one of the more compelling components as fans of micromanaging time and effort will have a blast. The disc system, or lack thereof now, is disappointing as it becomes a gaccha reroll machine that takes out the fun of picking up what you have around and using it. Granted, it’s hard to actually simulate a system that cannot be done today, but it’s just not the same. In the end, Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX has done enough to justify the revisit of two of the most memorable monster games.

Monster Rancher 1&2 DX is a controversial operation. On the one hand, it has the merit of expatriating a franchise with its own history with more decision, although the weight of time is inexorably felt on the life-simulator jrpg offer of the first two chapters of the franchise.

Nothing comes easy in Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX. These are fairly poor ports of two pretty good games, with the best part of them stripped out. I still had fun revisiting these games after so many years, and players able to overlook the poor interface and lack of guidance can still definitely find a good time here, but you’ll need to work for it.

For fans of the series, or for players looking for a slightly more involved grind during their commute than the usual mobile fare, Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX offer a heap of monster-rearing pleasure. However, this pair of titles is truly a product of its time: a lack of tutorials, janky graphics, and a set of opaque gameplay systems reliant on heavy grinding might prove too high a barrier for the average creature collector. Pick this up only if you’re prepared for a nostalgic romp through the highs and lows of late nineties game design.

The best that can be said about Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX is that it’s an interesting time capsule, a snapshot of how different monster-catching games could get at the turn of the millennium. Unfortunately, stripped of its most interesting mechanic and lazily dropped onto PC as an almost entirely unaltered mobile game, a snapshot of the past is all most players will want from this. There’s only so far that nostalgia can drive players, and this is more likely to poison memories than spark fond remembrances.
