There are pieces of a good game and story here, but even in two hours, it feels like it wastes a lot of time and doesn’t create anything all that compelling in the end.

A beautiful movie masquerading as a game, that tries its best to seduce you with nostalgia.

Lovely, beautiful, heartwarming, and unable to convince me it needed my input as a player at all.

I genuinely enjoyed some of the characters and the decidedly low-key gameplay, but they never quite saw the level of thematic exploration I really wanted. Still, I can’t deny it succeeded in getting me to slow down and appreciate the moment it was presenting. If you can handle this level of weapons-grade nostalgia, or even just dig the music it’s borrowing, you may well find something to appreciate about Mixtape.

One of those games you should play if you love videogames as a way to feel. [Recommended]

I struggle to pin down Mixtape’s true identity. It’s an ‘80s comedy with ‘90s attitude where the teens often talk like it’s the 2020s. (“Sauce?” In the mid-’90s?) Its ending still lands the gut punch, but I wonder if that has less to do with the game and more to do with a final run of classic alt anthems that simply cannot fail.
