Almost 10 years after its release, it's still a decent game to play. Just don't have high expectations about the story. The weakest part of the game is the story. It gets too repetitive after a certain point. But there are not many decent games in this concept.

The game is a little underwhelming imo. Loved the idea of exploring Mordor and the story was set up nicely.

In the end you don't really do much in the world though and the plot gets really weak.

    Nemesis system is excellent though.

A good game, but also a story of what could've been, AKA a disappointment.

Shadow of Mordor is focused predominantly on hack-and-slash combat, which is implemented very well indeed, so that makes it fun. Shadow of Mordor is focused predominantly on hack-and-slash combat, which is implemented very well indeed, so that makes it fun. World and character design are decent, but the world is rather small. The music is alright. The story? Well, there are some interesting bits from key moments in the Middle-earth history, but the way these tie in with the personal story driving the main character is a little questionable, and definitely not emotionally engaging. Even as someone who is moderately into Tolkien stuff (i.e. read & watched LOTR more than once, but not more), I was unsure of what's going on at times. This is partly due to a poor intro - the game throws the entire backstory and half of the mechanics onto the player in the first 3 minutes, instead of gradually laying it out and making it more immersive. The way a lot of the stealth and exploration mechanics are copied from Assassin's Creed is also a disappointment.

The Middle-earth universe is just begging for so much more, both in terms of the expansiveness and richness of the world, and the fascinating stories set in it. Shadow of Mordor is solid in most ways, and would do just fine as one of a myriad games set in the universe. But as the main one released in the last decade, it's just underwhelming.

A pretty servicable open world game that is elevated by its lovingly recreated tolkein setting and its innovative nemesis system. The orcs are the stars of the show and the way they adapt to you over time, struggle in their hierarchy, and become recurring characters never stops being entertaining.

A really repetitive game with casual gameplay lifted from other games, the only difficulty comes from enemies becoming immortal if their level is high enough, otherwise you can mindlessly kill hundreds of enemies until they give up which might be cool if you are in the mood but gets old fast

    ------------------------

DLS «Lord of the Hunt»

    ------------------------

DLS «The Bright Lord»

And the ''open world'' is actually not an open world. The map feels like a souls-like games map. There is not a living society except for randomly distributed uruk-hai's. And there is no wild life either. Game only got three different creaturs. And two of three creaturs even not seeing oftnen. Open world events are too few either. Players can only do mainly three different events. And they are discovering some open world lores, opening fast travel points and weapon challenges.
Main and side quest are all based on ''stealth'' and combat mechanics. And this mechanics are not too bad. Because all of fundamental combat mechanics are stolen from Batman series. Even the control scheme.
Game's story is not worth to mention. It is a safe story of a husband's revenge. There is some popular character and events to make the story more attractive. But the story is not unique at all.
Of course, as with all games, there are some special innovations. Game's top point is nemesis system. And it looks like they created this game for trying nemesis system. This system provides all the casual mordor soldiers to became an special captain or higher commenders. If a common soldier kill the main character, mordor's hierarchy changes a bit and this common soldier becames captain. This captains of mordor could fight with each other or they can hunt and recruit soldier. And if they succeed their power rates increase and they could be reach a higher position. And all the ork captain and warlords have some unique aspects like immune stealth attack, fear of ghuls. And the best points is all the captain and warlords have their different personalities.
In my opinion, this game is created for testing new nemesis system. And therefore they are did not focus on game's content so much. In overall, this game is lack of content too much. But still worth to try nemesis system. I wish they were'nt theift.

The best part being the era that they chose. Including Celebrimbor was an excellent idea as there was no other media to feature him. Locations like old Minas Ithil were great additions. This failure of the story permeates the gameplay, with its excessive side missions, end up tiring or crumbling a bit the concept that gives us the gameplay. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a "click-to-win" action adventure game published by WB in 2014. I always approach every licensed game with a healthy prejudice, which usually proves to be justified. Plus I really like The Lord of the Rings (both the books and the movies), so I was not expecting myself to like this game very much. But I was (kinda) wrong. Here is why: The graphics is very nice, fits the world well and specially the orcs are done very well with great details, nice animation and a lot of diversity. Also the power hierarchy of the uruk society based on strength and fear and constant infighting is a great system, that really fits the Tolkien's idea of the orc race. Sadly that is about all the positives I could find about this game. I guess what the game lacks the most is depth. The story is very simple, very predictable and honestly feels generic. The part of the story in Núrnen is also pretty much the same thing that happened to Théoden the King. I never liked the main protagonist's face, there was always something weird about it. Then I realized that he looks just like a typical Neanderthal. Seems pretty weird. The gameplay is fun, but very repetitive. All the side quests are really boring and involve doing literary the same quest twenty times to get nothing in reward. Apart from the orcs, there are just three species of "neutral" animals/creatures. Also the overall length of the game is fifteen to twenty hours, that is pretty weak. DLCs are short and profit oriented. No SJW and no microtransactions (apart from the overpriced DLCs).

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an average game based one one cool concept, which however cannot save it on its own. Final verdict: 52 %

What a game. This is another blessing to possess and to add with others from 'The Lord of the Rings' franchise as 'War in the North', 'Lord of the Rings Online', 'The Return of the King' (on PS2) and 'The Third Age' (also on PS2).

Story is badass and showcases new characters with all the positive and negative they can bring: some of them are terrific, some others just annoying as you possibly could be. Missions and side quests are repetitive as hell except for main ones. But I just clearly can't get more of that 'collect 5 flowers like those and 8 like these'. The bestiary is cool, but not more than that: you will soon get tired of ghûls, carragors and graugs as they are the only creatures in the whole game.

Gameplay and its mechanics are by far the most interesting point to discuss here. Obviously it is highly inspired by the 'Assassin's Creed' saga, especially for the ability to climb on every buildings and rocks, the fact that you can silently kill opponents, that bushes make you undetectable, that you can use something really close to the 'eagle sight' in order to discover hidden objects and (hell, MANY) collectibles here and there, that you have to reach the highest points of the map to discover places, that you can improve skills trees, etc etc etc. Yeah, clearly many copied and pasted from this major franchise. And it is as easy as the majority of AC games. Until the end, you simply cannot remove the basic tutorial instructions, even when you have been playing the game for something like 20 hours! We're treated like children down here! And I don't even speak about story mode bosses which are amazingly easy to defeat.

But it also looks like some of the 'Batman Arkham' games with these parts of infiltration, sneaking and collecting information and clues via mobs in addition to the combo system. Definitely hard to see what 'Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor' originally has to offer from itself... Jumping on the particular walls you want to is surprisingly difficult.

Combat-mode is (also inspired by AC but is) gorgeous ! By properly using combos you can achieve amazing executions and special moves to kill the opponents which are impressively varied. Controls are great but sometimes a bit rigid. Camera is okay except when you reach tiny places of corners of the map. The society of orcs is just phenomenal as it gives you the impression that you're evolving inside a living world with causes and consequences. Orcs' personnalities are also a wonderful feature. Too bad you personally can't make interesting and story-impacting decisions from start to end. From time to time you may encounter urukais taht are pretty invulnerable to all of your skills, making some fights truly unepic and frustrating.

Graphics are great thanks to the magical effects of optimization, even if faces and characters' expressions are really poorly designed. This is still a must try for me. But try it before you buy it if you can because the flaws I mentioned might put you off the whole thing.

If you die the enemies get stronger as well, it's kind of souls-like (Soulsborne) in that aspect. It feels like your sword barely does damage, you have to slice and dice (hit) the enemies so many times before they die. When you're surrounded by 40-50~ Uruks it feels impossible to kill them all, or at least it takes skill and most importantly A LOT of time. It's tedious. The most frustrating thing is when you knock an enemy on the ground and you go for the execute on em, WELL the other enemies can INTERRUPT that execute completely!!! And of course they can damage you as well, when they interrupt the execute! Super frustrating when you've earned an execute kill and they don't even let you do that in peace! No invulnerability/invincibility frames when executing.

It's just pretty frustrating and tedious at times. The story is generic. Overall it just ain't no masterpiece. BUT! It's most certainly not a bad game. It's in that 6-7/10 range for me. (Very) Good, but not great. If it had adjustable difficulty and/or changes to executions etc. to make it less frustrating, it'd be 7-8(+). It's more like a 6.5 now, leaning towards a seven. Worth buying and playing but it ain't no super impressive heavy hitter.

The gameplay is honestly amazing, it feels like a merge from an Assassin's Creed game and a 3D action hack and slash game, which is a combination that isn't very common out there. There are of course things that could have been done better, for example some parts of the story feel like simple repeat with the bosses dealing just a little bit more damage and dying a bit more slowly. But there are also parts that are really fun, the most popular one being branding, it's a really nice idea, it also allows the main character, Talion, not too look like a recognized hero with many allies.
The world is designed very nicely as well, all regions give the same dark vibe without being exactly the same. The details that you are able to find that reference Tolkien's works also are a really nice addition to the world-building of this game.

Overall this game is a good game, but I wouldn't recommend buying this before playing Shadow of War, as this is a worthy successor in my humble opinion, even though it is a sequel to this game.

I thought the movies were decent but nothing more. When my buddy described to me the “nemesis” system that the game uses now that did make me take notice and buy the game when I could. That is a system in the game that helps to give you more of a personal connection to the game that many open world games lack. Throughout the game you hunt down and kill Uruk Captains to help hinder their war effort. If you fail to kill them and they run away they will remember that and mention it the next time you meet along with wounds and scars you inflicted on them. If you get killed by a Captain they grow stronger because of it and are harder to kill next time. This made the game a lot more fun for me, made things less grindy and gave more personality to characters that would have been duller otherwise.

The combat in the game is a great take on the Arkham combat from the Batman games. It is all based around timing and chaining together attacks and combos. There are a lot of different finishers you can use depending on whether you are in stealth, hanging from a ledge, or using your sword or bow. You can upgrade your sword, bow and dagger with a variety of runes that will add special abilities and chances of events happening such as setting an enemy on fire or regaining health from a kill. You can find more of these by killing warchiefs or captains. You may get extra special ones if you use enemies weaknesses against them. You can gather intel on captains by finding documents and interrogating other Uruk. You can find out what attacks won’t work on them as well as what they fear and are weak to. There is so much that, while optional, can add such depth to the game as a whole. The game could get very hectic with a couple dozen enemies attacking at once. It got difficult when you had ranged attackers shooting stuff at you that you may not even notice. There are a lot of environmental attacks you can use such as using your bow to ignite a camp fire or to shoot a flies nest that will scare off enemies.

The story to the game was decent overall. You play a Ranger named Talion who is killed along with his wife and son when the Uruks assault the Black Gate where they are stationed. He doesn’t totally die as his body and soul are tied to that of an Elf who needs to remember his past and helps Talion in getting his revenge as well as recover his past memories. You uncover much of the story through side missions, finding relics and artifacts and completing main missions. The voice acting was great and and the story had a nice flow to it. My only complaints would be that the end of the game fight was basically a QTE event which felt like a cop out. Also many of the missions either force you into playing a certain way, such as riding a mount during, or had a time limit. I don’t like to be pigeon holed and like to figure out my own strategy to finish a mission. The graphics are awesome. The detail on a characters face is fantastic and the game area has some great vistas.

I played Shadow of Mordor on Linux. I played version 1.3 of the game and used the Vulkan beta. The game did have one crash when loading the game but no other issues at all. The Game has nine graphics settings as well as FXAA, four settings for AO and the ability to scale resolution to 200% of your monitor. I had all settings on highest with motion blur turned off and my resolution at 1080P. The framerate was usually 70 or above but could dip to the mid 50’s or go as high as 100 depending on my location and what was going on. The game used at most 8.5GB of RAM, 25% of my CPU, 100% of my GPU and 5.2GB of VRAM. The Vulkan beta ran much better than the OpenGL version. I got about 30FPS higher on average than on OpenGL.

Overall this was a great game. The combat is fantastic; the story is worth a playthrough even if you’re not an LTOR fan; the graphics are gorgeous; and it runs great. It has a few things I wish were different but nothing that made me angry or soured my fun. I paid $14.14 for the game and would say it was easily worth $40. I finished the main story; about half of the side missions and all of the collectables hunt in about 27 hours.

    My Score: 8/10

This game is an ambivalent experience. On one hand you're getting a cool gameplay and nemesis system which is actually underused. You have two locations in the game. The story is great, but sadly it cannot be tied with Tolkien vision. The game cannot be considered canon (Shadow of War even more). The graphics and audio are fine. I didn't encounter any bugs while playing. All in all, Shadow of Mordor is a good start for the Middle-earth series, but it's not something special. It's just a good game. Nothing more nothing less. But it could have been something so much more. Pickens approves. Expand

For me is a AC game in Middle Earth universe. with few different mechanics, especially Nemezis system.
Enjoyable and great playthrough from start to finish.

Good game. A very interesting plot that does not spoil the World of Tolkien at all. Excellent elaboration of the World and events, with different challenges for player's skills. I especially liked the nemesis system - it was a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry and a very fun experience in dealing with the orc hierarchy.

Boring, repetitive gameplay with no plot. It takes mechanics from Assassin's Creed and waters them down. Total cash-grab.

Great graphics and world design from Lotr, also expanding the lore and giving new looak at the orcs which is funny in the beginning. Nemesis system is great idea, although after few hours it has nothing new to offer. It is just a simple, fun action game for a few hours. Nothing extra nor bad. Bought for 5 Euro on sales.

Do you remember how you hate taking over bandit camps in all these open-world games? So here, you will be doing just that for whole the campaign over and over again. With the small difference, that this time you are going to love it. And it all thanks to Nemesis system.
The Nemesis system creates a hierarchy in the army of Orcs. They have ranks and when one dies, the other gets a promotion. Your task is to kill the top ones. The great thing is that you don't always have to kill the chieftain. You can force them to reveal to you some vulnerabilities of another orc, you can send him to sabotage another orc commander. The best part - it is all generated for you during your playtime, so every player has a slightly different experience.
I mentioned vulnerabilities. Every orc has some and finding it is the simplest way to defeat them.
What about a story? Is it faithful to the LOTR lore? Well, no. It is a fan-fiction story. And the sooner you will accept it, the better.

A great game, just a little repetitive in the long, but that will remain indelible in the memory

This game is about maxing out your character and kill every orc you can see. You can play stealth for a while, you can aim bow to start combo, but real fun is when you cut heads off. I have restarted many times quest only to get max points to maximize character and to be simply better/more skilled in this slaughter orc game.

I was not expecting much from this pure gamepad arcade game, but in the end game was so fun. 38 hours of gameplay to finish story line due picking all possible quests is fairly ok. Those side quests is what the game is really about.

Story I liked but this game is definitely not about story. Story is shorter than drinking cold beer on Sahara. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is about killing everything. I wanted to like system to get max level rune or to max enemy level but it doesnt work very well for me as no matter how high level your enemy is, they are easy to kill but still its so satisfying. Few times you will have to figure out how to kill some enemy, but thats all - this game is rather brainless.

It take some time till you get into the mood, but once you are in it, you will have real fun. This fun sometimes is 10/10 but 8.5/10 is most accurate overall.

After you get used to the world of Shadow of Mordor understanding comes: there is nothing to do in it. Chieftains – pretty serious opponents at first – in the end due to the lame balance become the whipping boys. Storyline is buried under muddy reasoning about rings, elves and dark lord. As a result you like the Shadow of Mordor gameplay but you do not want to go to the finish. [Nov 2014, p.64]

Only thanks to the Nemesis system stinky orcs from Peter Jackson’s movies rise above being cannon fodder and turn into actual characters. If this cool system weren’t here, no one would have looked twice at this hybrid clone of Batman: Arkham City and Assassin’s Creed.
