    A must buy!

Can't understand ppl who is not into this game, if they like RPG and singleplayer. It has a decent story line. It has AWESOME graphics, even with low settings. It has good alternative enemies, and weapons. Cant wait for LAst light to come out.

Metro 2033 is a linear, story-driven shooter that incorporates elements of survival and stealth. Ammunition and gas mask filters are in short supply which leads to a lot of tense moments as you struggle to complete a level having expended all supplies. Scavenging supplies from corpses and caches is essentially for survival. The gas mask is a bit of a gimmick but it does make for a sense of urgency in the above-ground levels as you struggle to find spare filters whilst choking and nearly blinded by your fogged-up mask. The "ranger" difficulty levels eliminate the HUD so that you have to stop and bring up your inventory screen to check how much ammunition and supplies you have left. This adds to the challenge and immersion.

The stealth-oriented levels see you infiltrate hostile bases alone. You can choose to avoid detection by taking out enemies with silent weapons and carefully turning off / shooting out every source of light and using night vision goggles to find your way around. You can also choose to mount a frontal assault but this technique often leads to failure as you are quickly swamped by waves of enemies. The stealthy weapons include throwing knives, silenced guns and hand-pumped pneumatic weapons.

There are just a few gripes I have with this game. Firstly, there are issues of weapon balancing. The availability of a silenced scoped assault rifle early in the game renders the other stealth weapons relatively useless. Also, there is a particularly powerful type of enemy in one of the later levels which barely flinches after twenty shotgun blasts at close range but will drop dead from a couple of arrows fired from one of the pneumatic weapons!

There are also issues of availability of supplies. Gas mask filters may only be purchased at the first marketplace one comes across in the game. One might reasonably expect that they can replenish their short supply of filters at any of the other markets throughout the game but this is not the case. Another odd thing I noticed is that it is possible to open a supply chest and pick up six magazines to yield only three rounds of ammo. Apparently those who made these stashes only remembered to load half of the magazines they left there - and those that they did remember to load only had a single round in them!

The lack of a multiplayer mode is a shame. The game would have benefited greatly from a co-op mode similar to Left 4 Dead. Hopefully this will be incorporated into the sequel.

It pushes the envelope as far as graphics are concerned but I have to say that reports of the game being highly demanding are greatly exaggerrated. By tinkering with the settings the game ought to be playable on any computer less than about three or four years old.

Overall, the game provides a very rewarding experience for any fan of linear shooters. It also provides many novel gameplay elements to maintain the interest of those who might otherwise be bored by such linearity. I have already put well over thirty hours into this game and I'm not tired of it yet. Given that the game has been on almost perpetual discount since release I'd say it provides excellent value for money compared to most titles out there.

In all that said there were also draw backs to the game as always...
easy mode was actually quite hard... I wouldn't play it on anything higher unless you've gone through the game at least once... ammo could sometimes be hard to find.. and gassmasks running out of air was annoying... though besides the dlema it also added a more realistic feel to the game... it wasn't like a standard FPS where everything was laid out for you on a silver platter...... also I wouldnt even recommend playing this game on xbox or playstation......

My final thoughts... for $29.99 this game is worth every cent for an immersion and experience you will not forget easily... the biggest draw back to the game is that you really NEED a decent PC to run it in all it's glory.. and not alot of people can do that.. but if you can max it out your in for one hell of a ride!

However I have been pleasantly surprised by Metro the controls felt perfectly fine and even though I am not really an FPS player I was able to kill something quite easy.

My main reason for buying Metro 2033 however was the story and it's a good one. If we would ever look at a post apocalyptic Moscow it would look like this. The story however is a little too short but the many ways of playing certain levels still calls for a replay once or twice.

The weapons are responding exactly like you'd expect from a piece of crap constructed with materials lying around (bonus points for that). (un)fortunately the AI is so stupid that it's still quite easy to wipe a whole army of enemy soldiers with just your AK-47 type weapon.

Overall I'd say this game was worth my time and money for the great atmosphere it had and the great attention to detail both in the weapons and the usage of flashlights/night-vision.

Bad points were the AI and the short story, but if the developer learns from it's mistakes in this one, the next may be a brilliant game.

The game requires an extreme efficiency with your items on the hardest difficulty which I love. The only cons I can think of are: it is quite a resource hog, and I had an issue with my filters disappearing if I would use the load from checkpoint option sometimes, that was frustrating. I loved this game! Graphics are great, story is good. You are actually involved in the "cut scenes" which keeps you in the game mentally. My only 2 complaints are:

    1. It's way TOO SHORT!!! I beat it in 18 hours. I only paid $5 bucks for it, so I can't complain, but had I paid full price I would be really upset it's such a short game. Of course, that was playing on Normal mode. 2. No

For instance if you intend to get this game for PC (which I whole-heartedly recommend): get a powerful PC - this game maxed out will eat your GPU for breakfast. I have a powerful gaming laptop built by the proud albeit sloppy hands of the caring folk of PCSpecialists, sporting a gtx580m and I've had to put on a significant over-clock to get this game to run properly. Also stealth is pretty buggy as well, along with a lot of elements in the game. But hey these are easy to overlook with an otherwise functional game which does such a great job of pulling you into its story and atmosphere. Congrats to you, 4A!!

still.... only the small world that is heavily scripted, creates the immersion if I compare this with
games like Skyrim, I rather have Metro 2033. The reason is simple: the action moments are very compact, good scriptted action after good scripted action. In skyrim, you have to wait and see what happens. Usually skyrim gives another boring fight. THAT's why so many people like me like Metro 2033.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, let's start:

The good: amazing graphics, great atmosphere, great voice acting, great story, innovative gameplay
The bad: ridiculously hard, stiff controls

Let me explain: the game have awesome graphics, it's very dark, indeed, but it's also very beautiful. What do I mean with "great atmosphere"? While playing, there was ocasions that I felt bad for the people on the metro, it's a game, but you can see that they suffered a lot, sometimes you see wounded people, blood on the walls, dead bodies, blood pools on the ground, anyway, sometimes you really feel that you are part of the story. And why "innovative gameplay"? Simple, your money on the game is your ammo, so, you can't shoot everything that moves, even with an AK-47, you have to aim a lot before you shoot, expecially when you have 20 bullets on the magazine and no bullets left to reload. Sometimes you find people that sell bullets, so you can exchange the ammo that you don't need to get more ammo for your favorite gun, and I think that this is great, each time you shoot, you loose money, so you must think before you act.

    Now the bad:

The game is hard, like, REALLY hard, if you play on the Ranger difficulty, you die with 2 shots, it's hard to find ammo, and even harder to find Healthy Kits. Sometimes you go to the surface, and you need Filters, that is also hard to find, so, if you don't read about the game on the internet, you may find yourself trapped on the surface, with a gun without ammo, and 3 mins. to find the exit.
The controls could be better, I don't know how to explain, but they are a little stiffy, you press a button and your character move suddenly, but after sometime playing you get used to it

The game have 2 different gameplay styles:
    - Sometimes you play inside the metro, so it's very dark, and other times you go to the surface, it's very bright, but you have to run because you die if you don't find new Filters for your Gas Mask.
    - Sometimes you face humans, and the gameplay is focused on stealth, hide on the shadow etc. And other times you face the mutants, and the gameplay focus on survival, you have to kill them before they catch you.

That's what I have to say about the game, even with the difficulty and the controls, the game is awesome. If you don't mind dying countless times, and running to find more air or bullets, you should try this game

The one thing everyone will agree on, Metro 2033 has very impressive graphics.

The pacing of this game is really well done and there are definitely some scary moments that sent shivers down my spine. Missions on the surface (above the metro stations) feel dangerous and have a sense of urgency, mainly because of your limited air supply.

The sneak element of this game is great as well; you can blow out candles and lamps, use silencers to take out enemies so you don't alert other nearby patrols, or go in guns blazing. The latter is probably a bad choice as the enemies can be difficult and well fortified. You have a device on your watch that will show you how well hidden you are, simple enough... but effective and fun for those that do like to sneak.

At the time of writing this, the game is on Steam for 20 bones. I can safely suggest this game to any FPS fan that loves a good post apocalyptic shooter with a survival horror element mixed in. It's done well, and I think this is a highly underrated PC game.

Some people may criticize this game as being too linear, but I'm okay with a game that pushes me along in one direction, as long as it does so with a little style and grace... and I feel Metro 2033 does just that.

Your journey through Metro tunnels and brief ventures across the surface are some of the tensest, most unnerving moments is gaming I've ever come across.
Now, this is not a horror game but the atmosphere and amazing sound engineering will keep you sweating and on your toes. There are no "booga-booga!" moments but you'll holding your breath as a huge horde of mutants are chasing you down a tunnel while your flashlight battery is dying and your gas mask filter is running out. Metro 2033 is very good at toying with your 'fight-or-fly' response. In this game, you forget what you know about gaming and start relying on your instincts. Very immersive.

There are a few flaws with the game though. Weapons feel under-powered and lack of feedback on whether you actually hit your target takes the satisfaction of gunning down enemies. Stealth is plain broken. You'll have a heck of time trying to sneak around. The English voice acting is also bit weak, but really, play it with Russian voices and English subtitles. The Russian Voice acting is way, way better.

All this is forgiven when you see what the game does right, like pacing of the story (which is very good), the mechanics of your actual equipment like cranking a dynamo to keep your flashlight battery charged and the mysterious, hidden karma system.

This game is not for everyone. Some people will be confused by a game where Russians are shown as humans, with all their flaws and virtues, instead of mindless cannon fodder.
Sure, it is no for everyone, but it's almost like a Tarkovsky film, dense and filled with obscure meaning, but once you open yourself to it, you will find a rich, unique experience which is seldom found in gaming.

I admire the gloomy atmosphere of the game. The world of the game combines the relationship with our world and something absolutely alien. It shows how our world could be look alien. The game is just beautiful and art work is great. My score is 9 because I received "PhysX error" at first start of the game, and I had to reinstall PhysX myself.

And then there's the story, oh man the story is amazing with multiple endings that even today's games don't have, I think it had 3 or 4 different endings depending on your play style and difficult moral decisions made in the heat of critical and pivotal points in the story.Overall an amazing game, I could run it on my laptop, it didn't cost me a dime, and it was an unparalleled experience in a game for me, the story stuck in my head for days after thinking about how people see things, and wondering what those other endings were. I HAD to play this game again too! Wait what? A free, single player game that has a ton of re playability?! Yes. Absolutely marvelous. Only thing that could have been better, yet not enough to turn down, is the lack of melee. It's quite a challenge to dodge enemies while swapping weapons and when you're out of ammo and have a dinky knife to slash with. But that's it, manage over that and you'll really enjoy this game

This game is fantastic! It plays smooth, you have an incredible atmosphere and some really spooky horror scenarios. The story is well spoken and there´s an morality system where you can gather points for the alternate ending. Stealth is hard but works and action is very satisfying. The only problems this game has is the bad A.I. which behaves sometimes like it would have an wallhack. Also the movement and face animations of the NPC´s are bad. But that´s no problem at all. It doesn´t disturb you from anything, because you will like the characters and their stories. Stealth is working only with the Stealth suit you buy at the Communist Station before the frontline mission. There´s a Armored one too but with him you can´t sneak properly. The biggest problem is that it´s very linear. If you only like Open World games then you shouldnt buy this game, but if you have no problem with that, then buy the game now and Pre Order Metro Last Light too, because this game is a experience you shouldn´t miss!

True, there are problems with it (hopefully Metro: Last Light addresses these) but almost nothing that detracts from the overall experience. First of all, this game was meant to be enjoyed and experienced, and should be treated as such, and I think alot of the complaints of this game are because its not being played the way the developers meant. If you are just running and gunning your way through, or just skipping through all the cut-scenes and playing as fast as you can, then your doing it wrong, and this isnt the game for you.

The graphics are GORGEOUS and should be enjoyed. Take some time and look at the details of the environments and the people/monsters around you. Light dimly reflects off of rusty metal surfaces, shadows flicker all around you, smoke and fog drift up from the tracks, your breath fogs up your gas mask, the heat from your rifles barrel distorts your vision, every effect beautifully done and perfectly placed.

The sound is incredible, drips of water splash in the background, wails of ghosts echo in the pipes, heavy breathing of unseen monsters haunts you, your footsteps crunch over broken glass alerting nearby bandits of your presence. Every sound is masterfully done and clues you in to unseen dangers if you pay attention to them.

The gameplay is epically terrifying and fits the mood perfectly. Every decision has consequences and you must ration supplies and salvage everything you can to survive. As your flashlight dims, you weigh the consequences of pulling out your charger and taking the time to charge it, making it brighter. A group of monsters bears down at you, can you survive them with the metro-made "dirty" ammo? Or do you switch to your precious pre-apocalypse military rounds that doubles as currency? Your gas-mask starts to fog up and your breathing gets more and more labored, do you take time to switch out your filter cartridge? Or do you wait and hope it lasts until your safely away?

All the gear is perfectly suited to the atmosphere and the period. Everything from the home-made weapons (like the inaccurate, overheating "bastard" gun, the 6-shot revolver style shotgun, or the hand-pump silent pneumatic pellet/spear guns), to treasured pre-war supplies and everything it takes to keep it all going is well thought out and works just like post-apocalypse solutions should.

The level design may be quite linear (although there are MANY little side areas to explore for extra gear and supplies) but it suits the game well, like a dark twisting metro tunnel. Some may also not like the checkpoint style auto-save, but again, it suits the game well, as they are perfectly spaced (the saves always come at a proper time in little gaps in the action) and having manual saves would make the game far too easy, as none of the decisions you make would have any consequences.

All in all, this game is an incredibly immersive and thoroughly terrifying survival experience in a post-apocalyptic metro system. Its few minor shortcomings are FAR outweighed by the overall experience and many of them were conscious decisions that better suit the game than alternatives. If your having trouble enjoying or getting into this game, then start over, dive in and let yourself be drawn into the game, instead of simply trying to beat it.

The atmosphere that everyone talks about yes that is there and it's fab. I like the stuff like wood-burning fires powering trolleys on metro lines. It draws the player into the despair and savagery of the post-apocalyptic scenario. Buildings are smashed, people live underground, and they are hunted by men and beasts.

I have played it six times now and will buy the Redux version when it is on sale again. It's that good to me, and I have seen others say the same in Steam forums. If you buy Metro 2033 in a Steam sale you have little to complain about. You will get your money value easy.

I had problems with the game though on my first playing:
There are five difficulty levels. I chose the middle one as I always do. I did not realise I had chosen the tough setting, because I didn't understand what the ranger modes were. The result was I found it blisteringly difficult.

The game cutscenes when you reach a certain point. Infuriatingly you may not have explored the whole area you were in. You may have a choice of two ways to go to explore. You go one way bam cutscene. You may have left good weapons behind, or ammo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overview:
Metro 2033 was a unique gaming experience. As far as Post-Apocalyptic settings go, the immersion level of this game exceeds that of any game I have played prior. Characters are unique, and interesting, and the environment truly makes you feel as though any moment could be your last.

    Gameplay:
Metro 2033 has all the standards for FPS RPG, and has an even amount of positives to negatives. On the positive side, the gameplay is fluid, and what breaks you do endure between chapter sections offer narrative to make the wait less annoying. The narrative also helps keep the storyline together, as well as give you a perspective into your character’s thoughts and feelings. On the negative side, your character has no dialogue beyond this narrative, and you have no conversational choices beyond a scarce few ready-checks (two exceptions to that come to mind, but are minor in detail). This negative, however, is altogether unimportant considering the bigger picture that your character is in a post-apocalyptic world and giving them options to be perky or silly would diminish the atmosphere. Besides, that’s Ulman’s job.

On the plus side, you have a variety of weapons from which to choose. Your sturdy tactical knife is your savior if you run out of ammo or explosives. Throwing knives, while limited in the quantity you can carry, are extremely effective and silent; key for stealthing through levels. Revolvers come with a number of different attachment options, but the grand-daddy of them all has a scope, silencer, extended barrel, stock and laser pointer. The downside is, it’s still just a six-shooter, so there’s frequent reloading. Primary and secondary weapons vary in power, magazine size, and it’s up to the user’s preference for what they’d prefer. Just take note that some weapons require pumping or charging, and even if they have a full clip, they will not fire without pressure/charge. Bombs sum up your arsenal, and they come in two types: traditional and sticky. These, like the throwing knives, are capped at 5 for your inventory.

A downside to the weapons is that you may not know exactly what it is you’re carrying. If you have a lousy memory (like yours truly), then you are out of luck for the Weaponsmith achievement, which requires getting a kill with each weapon in the game. The only time you see a weapon’s name in-game is when at a vendor. The same goes for the ammo your weapon uses. You will need to memorize which weapon shoots what kind of ammo, so you will know what to buy from a vendor later as not all guns fire the same size ammunition.

Another challenge in the game is that certain areas require a gas mask, and you guessed it, your air is limited by the number of filters you have. Your mask also takes damage, so watch how many times you take a hit, you could find yourself enemy-free but suffocating while scrambling to find a discarded replacement on the wasteland surface. There are night-vision goggles available for sale as part of the stealth armor bundle from the vendors in-game, and in a few select places in the Metro itself. These are great for those who prefer to sneak their way around enemies, or those looking to get the achievements for no-kills on specific levels.

    Story:
The story is well rounded, and it is easy to lose yourself in the world of the Metro. Your character’s home station is in danger, and you feel compelled to go out into what’s left of the world in a desperate attempt to save it. This leads you from station to station beneath the surface, fighting your way through enemies both human and non. You meet many people along the way who help you, but the world is a lethal and unforgiving place. By the end, you will have lost more than you have gained, in the way of allies, but it’s not for me to say who makes it and who doesn’t. While roaming the Metro, just remember that no one is safe.

The story has two endings, however only one of them is considered canon as it is the one upon which the premise of the sequel, Metro Last Light, is based. In order to be able to choose between the two endings, you’re required to obtain a certain number of moral points. These are not explained in-game, though several guides online can walk you through how to get as many as possible to net yourself the choice. Some cannot be obtained if you choose another route (for example, one moral point might be awarded for going through a level without killing anyone, but another might be added for accessing something in-game that you cannot possibly access without getting the attention of enemies and needing to fight your way out).

    Summary:
To wrap it up, Metro 2033 is a great buy. The few downsides aren’t enough to phase you from playing at least twice through, happily. The characters are memorable, the dialogue is realistic, and the environment is so frighteningly possible, you’ll be taking a deep breath or two just to remind yourself you’re above ground and don’t need a mask.

Sometimes you just have to run away or through the danger zone, other times you need to hide and stay safe while your support team clears the way. Metro 2033 is a superb post-apocalyptic shooter, simply put. The world of the Moscow Metro subway lines gives a feeling of familiarity and foreboding at the same time. Especially since some of the lines and stations are abandoned and overrun by the horrors of the dark.

While the game is linear, the atmosphere makes it so it's still a fresh experience after each mission.

The graphics are, even in 2014's standards, absolutely breathtaking. And even today, this game makes your PC work HARD to run it at a good framerate with all the eye candy turned on. My gaming laptop is capable of running it on maximum, but I have to compromise on the advanced depth of field and AA to prevent it from running extremely hot.

In short, if you plan on getting this game and you have a computer that's not up to par, you may not have a very good experience, unless you play the game on low settings. But even then, on low settings, the game looks better than many of today's titles.

if you're afraid that this will just be a "techdemo" shooter, rest assured in the fact that the game delivers a very satisfying challenge even in the normal difficulty setting. It's quite brutal on the "Ranger" settings as well, as every enemy presents a true obstacle to your progress, and ammo is VERY scarce.

I love post-apocalyptic fiction, which might explain why this review may seem a *little* biased.

In general though, this is a superb game that's well worth experiencing for yourself. Just make sure you have a good computer :)

The weapon very well made from the model till the sounds of fire. The storyline is great and epic, also the final level is awesome.
But also this game got some minuses such as bad stealth, the poor difference of monsters and you don`t feel that you can be out of ammo.
If you have not completed this game yet - I highly recommend you to do it as fast as you can

Story is really interesting. Nuclear bombs dropped on Moscow and people started to live on metro. Ambience, locations really pulls you in the game. You feel the people in metro. You feel for them, you try to understand and help them, you feel the game. That's right you don't play this, game plays you.

You see other stations in loading screens. I really wish we could visit every single one of them. Hope they do this in next metro games.

As for Artyom, character we play as doesn't talk during gameplay but only in cutscenes. Which is interesting choice. He is not your standard overpowered fps character. He's just a normal character who try to survive.

Unlike other fps's this game is slow. Which makes you immersed in atmosphere. There's minimal hud which I like. I don't want my screen to be filled with icons. Stealth is good and generally works. Gunplay is great and so as sounds.

There is this thing called moral system or something and it's really annoying. This system affect the endings you get. You knock down people instead of killing them, listen to people, explore locations and avoid combat and you get good ending. Sounds good on paper but really bad on execution. First of all you don't know how much affected your moral is. You get a sound when you do good thing but not with bad thing. With one mistake you get the bad ending. It's not implemented properly.

But other than that I can't think of a bad thing. This game is masterpiece, one of the most atmospheric game I have ever played.

A nasty demand on your computer since Supreme Commander, an eerie atmosphere broken by the grenade you just tossed into the woodwork, a nice take on stealth and Russian vodka throws this game off my pirate list and onto my FREAKIN' BUY list. Shame on myself and those who pirate this great game. A something to improve this game would be a multiplayer freeroam DLC.

The stations (e.g. Polis) are beautifully build, yet you have no chance to explore them. It would be nice to see some side-quests, despite it being a linear ego shooter. For that, mutents are part of the story, but it would have been a better if they were a little easier to get rid off. Having to fight a swarm of easy to kill mutants rather than one who the player has to shoot 20 times before he falls would add more thrill and taken the annoyance. A stronger AI and and giving ammunition a little more strength would create great firefights, adding to the game. Additionally, yet again we are back to the Far Cry mistake of checkpoint savings... this is not fun, but really annoying... Especially in the D6 complex... Overall, It is a fun and story driven game that has its flaws. I am happy I played it, but doubt that I will replay it in the near future as it is missing that little bit of variation. Expand

I enjoyed the overall length of the game, not too short, not too long...

The game does hold some flaws, the enemy A.I can be considered idiotic, from enemies who will take cover next to your ally or take cover just in front of you... The amount of weapons found in the game are meager and nothing to write to home about. The strongest rifles can be bought at stations but since this is a nuclear world and money does no longer exists, bullets have become currency, but you need every bullet you can find to survive so getting that nifty sniper rifle is not happening any time soon. The creatures also seem to have a strange way of attacking you, they charge and than seem to go straight through you, making you go nuts on where the heck they are! A disappointment for this game is there is no multiplayer component at all! This could have given the game a allot longer lifespan...

But overall its a great game to enjoy if you have some money to spare, and looking how the game ends, expect some DLC or a part two in the future...

Arguably more could be got from this if it was an rpg and allowed more exploration of the world, as it is rather restricting of what you can do and where you can go, but such is the nature of many fps's. A criticism I would raise is that the incredible atmosphere created early on is not capitalized on, since you spend lots of your time shooting hordes of other men. Another criticism would be that it is too short, far too short, especially as it is linear and the actual playing sections are fairly short. Graphics are great as long as your system is powerful enough to support it. True most of the environment are ugly destroyed areas, but that's where the story is set. In the busier areas, random NPCs have weird and sometimes funny conversations in the background which adds to the atmosphere. Sometimes it makes it hard to focus on the one voice you care about, but for me it actually makes it feel more real. I've heard people complain about the lack of ammo and basic enemies not dying from a full clip of ammo, but that's a huge exaggeration. The lack of ammo is part of the setting and on normal difficulty at least, basic enemies die with 3-4 shots as long as you actually hit them in the right places (some will die with just 1 shot), spray and pray will not work on most enemies which I think is a great thing. I've also heard people complain that alerting one enemy alerts all others in the same area, which is a stupid complaint. When one enemy is alerted they tend to start shooting or shouting for help which will obviously alert the others who are within hearing range, if the enemy triggers an alarm, they may alert others who are even further away. I know from personal experience that if the enemies are separated far enough and are not within hearing/alarm range of each other, alerting one group will not alert the other group. I've also heard people complain that most people won't speak to you, which I actually prefer to the situation where everybody will speak to you. It makes more sense to me that if you go up to a perfect stranger and start talking to them they're not gonna talk back because they don't even know you.

The story and areas are mostly linear (some areas have multiple paths), which is not necessarily a bad thing. I haven't finished the game yet, but so far I feel like the overall story is decent. It does have some executions problems like random people who helps you out with only a little explanation as to why (no I did not skip any cut-scenes). It also has some bugs like enemies running through support columns to pounce at you. And in a few cases enemies pouncing through me and then attacking me from behind when I've put my back towards the wall specifically so I don't get attacked from behind. I'm also a bit divided about picking up weapons dropped by enemies. It doesn't really tell you what the dropped weapon can do, so for the most part you have to rely on sight to guess whether or not it's better than your current weapon. In some cases it's a weapon you've never seen before which makes it even harder. I'm divided because on the one hand it's annoying to have to rely on sight, but it also adds to the realism because if you find something on the ground it's not likely to come with a manual explaining what it does. I'm also a bit divided about the fact that you can't seem to save manually and have to rely on autosaves. It makes for annoying situations like when you're trying to go stealth and have mostly succeeded but then make a mistake towards the end. But it also makes me a lot more careful about what I do and makes me think about the big picture more. In other games where there is a quick save, if I come across a situation where I need to make a really difficult shot, I can just quick save and reload as often as needed until I make that perfect shot. In this game, you generally can't do that because between that really difficult shot and the autosave there's probably 10 somewhat difficult shots that you need to redo. It makes you a lot more careful and it does frustrate me at times but the feeling you get when you finally get it right is really satisfying.

Overall I'd say that so far the game is worth the $30 I paid for it on steam.

The take on how weapons and items work in a game is simply unique, such as a Pneumatic Rifle in which you have to pump a handle manually every 5-6 shots otherwise its like shooting paintballs at enemies. Or a flashlight you have to handcrank for more power, simply essential to be on top of your game, otherwise you find yourself fighting mutants in the dark because your flashlight ran out of juice.. constant maintenance of your weapons and items could turn a player away, thats only if you're a baby when it comes to little "quips" that people complain about...people complain way too much that a game is linear, HELL What game isn't linear and allows 100% exploration???? WHAT GAMES HAVE YOU PLAYED THAT HAD FULLY EXPLORABLE AREA IN which you could do whatever you wanted and change the pace of the game?????? UNLESS YOU'RE PLAYING GTA or MAFIA II, there hasn't been a fully sandboxed FPS game in a longtime, unless you count Garrys mod but there is no story, just sandbox. The game mechanics has fails in the form of small glitches, faulty AI detection, hiding in shadows is almost useless...also invisible walls, varied bullet penetration in objects, or none whatsoever, like shooting through wood is like shooting kevlar... and hit detection on "human" AI gets annoying unless you have high grade ammo...bullets are almost like rubber when shooting their heads...besides that, Metro2033 is a very unique and engaging single player FPS with a decent story, albeit a short one, but definitely worth playing...I give it an 8 due to some poor game mechanics. Granted the checkpoint auto save system has its obvious downsides. Repeating big parts of a level again because an enemy spotted you without obvious reason can get frustrating and running out of filters for your gas mask in the middle of the level without the chance to refill them sometimes makes you end up loading the whole level again, but who can see post those downsides can have a fun and intense experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't think anyone is against the fact that this game is beautiful, it looks gorgeous and is very atmospheric, especially visually. I also, storywise got to understand Artyom, and like him, better and better, I think he is introduced very well, and I like the small voice overs inbetween the tubes and stations and such that you visit. Horror wise, I think the first time you get to see those nosalus or W/E they call them, they can look like something out of a horror movie, but in the end they look like overgrown pigs with more humanoid form. Not the most scary I would say. At the point that I am at, have to find some explosives in one tube and bomb another tube so the monsters cannot get through then do something else in a different tube (its a while since I loaded up the game) I haven't really found the shadow people to be all that scary, I'm hoping that comes later, but atm it's not scary at all.
I like the story of the game and how it is presented, I also like the gas mask mechanic, but I do feel that bullets aren't really all that scarce, if you loot every corpse for bullets you will soon have more than enough.
I dislike the stealth mechanics, I was supposed to stealth through some station and save bourbon, in the end I decided that a frontal attack was probably more fun and rewarding for me... It was, however the story didn't like that choice, and even though I had cleared out the station of people intent on harming me, the story still decided to say that someone else helped me and that more people were following right behind wanting to gut me... That, I guess, is the only misstep so far for me, otherwise this is definitely a great game that I enjoy, its beautiful, atmospheric (I can almost smell the steam, the damp tunnels and the fear when walking in a tunnel like that only with a flashlight), the gunplay I like but the sounds could be better imo. All in all, and especially with the pricing these days, it should be in any gamers collection.
Yes it is linear... You are walking around in TUNNELS for the most part of the game, it is difficult to expand a tunnel to encompass flanking when your fighting in a tunnel only wide enough for a train to pass through. Granted even in the city of Moscow there are a few invisible walls, I didn't find it to be burdensome at all, sometimes limitations are key to giving a great experience. I will give it an 8/10, since it DOES have it's faults, but it is a good enough game to warrant buying and especially these days when you can get it for less than 20â

The game has some rpg elements, and it's too bad it didn't have more. It would have made sense to add dialog options for example. The animations could also use some work, especially for some of the enemies. When they come at you the frame rate tends to drop too much.

All in all a great experience well worth playing and enjoying , just dont expect anything revolutionary.

I played this game in the original Russian language, while reading the first (in the series) book "Metro 2033: No Escape" by Dmitry Glukhovsky. There are quite a few parallels with Stalker games (and the book by Strugatski brothers "Picnick on the Side of the Road" of course) which are mentioned briefly but never explored. Why? So much chance to deepen the game is just brushed away! So much of the Moscow Metro area is left unexplored (you cover about 5% of the metro stations in game). Why?
So, while the game is well-paced, and yes - linear, it leaves many aspects of two good novels untouched, unexplored. I finished the game in 10 hours on normal dif. What else can i say?

I wanted to give this game a 10 because of it's visuals and atmosphere. They were able to pull off sort of a Half-Life / F.E.A.R. mix, with a unique spin on things. Where the game started to fall apart was in the A.I. department, and the mechanics on how combat worked. To compare, Crysis Warhead offered very smooth game play, where this was a little stiff. The closest games I can think of as far as how movement feels would be Oblivion or Skyrim. Nothing against those games, but for a base FPS; moving, shooting, and aiming are critical. Having said all that, it's nowhere near bad enough to ruin the game as many seem to suggest. Where Metro shines as bright as the Sun is in the stunning visuals you see throughout the game. The models, textures, post process effects, lighting and atmosphere are outstanding. If you have a machine that can handle DX11, I can't think of a better game that fully uses that technology. If you can look past some rough edges when it comes to the A.I. and combat, this game is well worth buying, and playing through more than once. Expand

I'll give this game an eight, because I personally value story above gameplay. Metro 2033 is a post-apocalyptic FPS with survival horror elements. First off, the attention-to-detail is astounding: the amount of work that went into every tiny detail of the environment really helps draw you into the world even if it makes the linear levels somewhat confusing to navigate. The story is quite well-done, although the inconsistency of the almost-silent protagonist can be jarring; the main character, Artyom, briefs each mission beforehand in the form of a diary but goes completely silent once gameplay resumes. The game also has the makings of quite a good atmosphere but never really takes full advantage of it, being quite creepy at best but never very scary. The gameplay is Metro's weakest point: I'm sure I don't need to go over the AI problem and gunplay, just scroll down to one of the hum drum 0's down there. So quick summary; good story, interesting atmosphere, average gameplay, linear levels and great attention-to-detail. Expand

Can't buy filters at Polis and they throw me directly to the surface to die. -2 for not thinking about such an obvious storyline bug. Also -2 for needing a supercomputer to play it at the lowest setting. A grenade explosion gets me from 50-70fps to 15fps. WTF?

The shooting works really well and there is a keen attention to detail in the game that some will appreciate and others will find annoying. The game is very immersive and draws you in exactly like a good book would do. Like others have said the enemy A.I. is half stupid at best and full stupid at worst. Play it on a harder difficulty because anything else is too easy. Payed $5 USD for the game and it was fun for a week or so. In my mind that is a good purchase. Graphics are top notch if your computer can handle them. All except for some of the hair models. Yes I said hair. The character models literally look like they have plastic hair that is glued on sometimes. Can't wait for Metro: Last Light to come out next year. I will definetely be buying it on day 1. Expand

The immersion was really strong and the game was able to scare me a lot during the gameplay, also the graphics are very nice and do the job of creating a melancholic and fearful apocalyptic world very well. I just wish they where better optimized to play better in a mid range system like mine.

I could give it a 10 but I wanted a bit more freedom, I was imagining to be able to explore abandoned stations and other places I read in the book and not to be that story restricted to where I can go or not. I also expected it to be bigger since there are a lot of events from the book that I wanted to experience in game as well.
Also the sound system failed completely with dialogs in my setup of 5.1 speakers and I had to configure the system in stereo to be able to hear the dialogs, as I found out it was a common problem with that setup and I just don't understand why they never released a patch to fix that.

Enjoyable game with a good atmosphere and great graphics, but there are a few issues that I do not care for. First, the game engine seems to make the player jerky. In other words, the movement is not very smooth. Some of the section of the game seem a little more difficult as they should be, such as running out of ammo at critical times. I would imagine if there are mutated animals (ie: monsters) there will also be mutated or 'infected' humans too (ie:zombies), but zombies are missing from this game . What a shame :/ The AI characters that help you to progress with the story can act really dumb sometimes. For example, in one of the missions ('Lost Tunnel') your AI buddy Bourbon tells you to waste the guards in the next room while he hides and waits behind some crates (hmm.. rhyme). To take down the guards you can either use stealth (by throwing knives) or go 'lock and load' and fill them with lead (although you are strongly advised to NOT waste your ammo). After successfully achieving the objective, nothing happened. I walked back to where Bourbon went to hide and he was still there, with no intention to continue with the story/mission. Have I done something wrong? After a few minutes of me running around and trying to find more ammo among the guards' dead bodies, Bourbon realised that the area is clear and it is safe to move out. Also, this game doesn't use the kind of AI that follows you around. It's the opposite. If you stray off to some other tunnel to find some ammo or another gas mask, you may have a difficulty locating your AI buddy. However, there is always the objective notepad which you can have a look at in case you are lost. It has a compass that points you in the right direction. But what am I doing, this is supposed to be a mini-review , not a guide... I just read few reviews on here (MetaCritics, literally, just now) and some people say it's not very realistic and that the gun physics suck and things like that. Well, all throughout the game you are reminded how precious the ammunition is (it serves as money too). That implies you are better off using knives (against human enemies anyway). Of course there are situations in which you can only use firearms but even in those cases you should always use single shots to incapacitate the enemy. Note that it usually take 3-6 bullets to kill an enemy, depending on the type of ammo you are using. The point I am making is that the game encourages the player to use stealth to accomplish tasks, therefore guns weren't given much attention to by the developers. Some people have to understand and appreciate what this game is about. It's about survival. Not, wasting resources (i.e.: ammo). (We do that enough in the present. Maybe that's one of the moral points the game is making. How humanity kept wasting resources until it wasted itself.) I played 9 hours straight and still haven't completed it so I can say I got my money's worth (bought it for à Expand

The weapons are kinda tricky in the fact that there are tons of random upgrades you can get for a particular weapon at any point. However you can find the best guns in stores across the cities you come too. I think the main thing with this game is the fact that it's fairly slow. Your not given much more than a quest to leave your home and family by a total stranger to start your journey and it takes a bit to ramp up. Furthermore, this game got zero publicity, making it a relative unknown on the FPS market. I bought this game for 5 bucks on Steam and I would have easily paid 20-30 dollars knowing what I know now. And with the sequel coming out later this year, it gives FPS games a different feel from all your CoD and Battlefield games. This is a thinking person's FPS game and I really enjoyed it in the end. If you let the game engross you in it's story and atmosphere, you won't regret a second of playing it and you'll easily want more from this series. While it's not perfect, there are very few FPS games out there like this and, for the tons of sales this games has on the various sites like Amazon and on Steam, it should be a no-brainer for anyone who likes FPS games but aren't into the guns-a-blazing style that most FPS games turn into. If there was better optimalization of the game i would give higher. Captivating story told through the game. Certainly one of the best single player FPS i have played recently. You can choose to play stealth style in some places and it was entertaining to find a way around. Characters fit the story and fulfill their roles there was nothing much breaking there. All in all well deserved 8.

Novel and videogame join to compose a very interesting proposal in the saturated first person action genre.
