Metro 2033 is an atmospheric treat that is unfortunately plagued with technical issues and embarrassingly poor sound designs.

I remember how in 2012-2013, among my classmates there was only talk about this game. Then it became interesting to me and I began to watch the walkthroughs on this game on YouTube, then I liked it incredibly. Since that time, I don't remember anything about the plot, except for the name of the main character and some "black" ones. Not so long ago, this game was handed out for free on the incentive and I decided to take it for myself. Now the time has come and I decided to spontaneously download it and start going through. The plot is not bad, this is not a stupid straightforward story about post-apocalypse and the extermination of monsters in droves. I loved the spiritual and mystical story of this game. As for the gameplay, it didn't quite work for me. Firstly, I did not like the lack of prompts in some missions, because of this I had to walk around the rooms pointlessly in search of something unknown. It's the same with the doors in some missions ... For example, in the library. Not the slightest hint that you need to break this or that in order for the door to open. Yes, it's kind of a sandbox and puzzle, but I personally don't like that. I like to follow the narration and adventure of ch. hero and not thinking how to find a way out, open the door and everything like that (in general, as you like).Everything else seems to be not bad, although in some places stealth did not go too much for me. The plot, as I repeated myself, sympathized with me both then 8-9 years ago, and now. The player has 2 types of endings: alternative and canon (this is certainly very cool).

Bottom line: for those who like corridor shooters with horror elements, definitely purchase and play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. metro 2033 and the series as a whole shares a lot of similarities with the witcher franchise , both are novels written in a non english language, both received video game adaptations by passionate studios and with each new game they improved with a consistent increase in quality having the 3rd game being considered the best in each respective series but where the witcher is a rpg metro is a first person shooter.

Story: the story may have originated from a novel but the story was revised for the game by the actual author himself meaning that its has consistency , Artyom is a man who just turned 20 growing up in the metro tunnels of post apocalyptic russia about to venture out of his small dank deep underground metro station. beyond threats of war between the reds and the nazis that have taken up arms to take over the metro , the mutant animals that think you are food there is one major threat to humanity , the dark ones mutated humans that gained telekinesis thanks to the radiation. the dark ones are humanity's greatest threat as even being in a dark ones presence can cause hallucinations , death or even worst , i don't think i can talk about the story without the ending because my experience felt more like the end of the book , artyom manages to fight his way to the top of a tower setting up a laser missile guidance system blowing up the main dark one city , and as the missiles flew i thought about how every dark one i personally encountered tried to help me , but every other person seems to die from them , destroying them all was the only option for humanity but after a nuclear war can humanity be trusted ? are the dark ones a metaphor for aliens ?
    Story: 10/10

World building: that moral dilemma is baked into the game , at first i would shoot mutants on sight this always got me in sticky situations until i learned the creatures behaviours , when they attack , who attacks when they see me , what can i walk on past ect ect i had to learn about the world to survive on my own witch is something only the witcher 3 has done for me (surprise surprise) and this survival puts an extra layer on the games morality , as we all do amoral things in the name of survival . the world it self is dank and creepy and disgusting but when you make it to pollis station it feels huge and like a big city to artyom as everything and place he has seen is cobweb infested tunnels littered with rotting corpses , vent systems again with cobwebs, the highly irradiated surface where every creature is trying to kill you. nazis and communists exist with their own ideologies and motivations and actions , artyom's world is a violent nasty world that asks you to do the worst things you could do just to live.
    World building: 8.5/10

Graphics: this is a decent looking game , sure its not perfect and games have looked better before but the atmosphere and world design really make up for any graphical infidelity. character designs are a little wonky but most wear cool looking armor so it's barely noticeable outside of cut scenes. my biggest problem with the graphics is how muted the colour palette is but given the games setting again it can be overlooked . my point is the graphics are just ok technically but the art is on full display and that saves this game from looking like crap
    Graphics : 6/10

Gameplay: here is where i am going to unload all my gripes as 90% of them are gameplay related , the checkpoint system is wack , i played on hardcore mode which itself was tough and i did like but when you get to the turret section with its awful controls where you need pinpoint accuracy only for me to make it out by the skin of my teeth to run into a tank that because i was low health kills me i tried shooting the tank round that didn't work , i tried shooting the tank itself but it always killed me , i looked up a walk through and found out that you are actually supposed to survive the tank shooting at you but because i was stuck on a bad checkpoint i had to restart the level i already died on no less than 40 times , on normal difficulty it was a joke and way to easy . again at the end i ran out of filters but i couldn't find any more even though i looked , there was none in my vicinity , so again i had to restart the level because every time i loaded my save artyom immediately started suffocating. the shooting is so off i would swear id killed something only for it to kill me as i turn to kill something else and yeah it's frustrating to play. and the stealth sucks and it is way to linear plays more like a horror game witch given the setting is ok
    Gameplay: 3/10

Sound design: its good , voice acting feels authentic , music is intense and changes to what is happening (mostly) having cricendos when you are about to be spotted during stealth , not much i can say as im running out of characters for this review
    Sound design:7/10

It is now 2017, so i guess I've run out of excuses to not finish it. All in all, I still might not finish it at the end of the day, which is ironic considering I played through Last Light and moderately enjoyed it. Their is something missing from these games that's difficult to point out, almost as though their is a combination of elements that should work in conjunction with each other, but mostly don't. First off is the actual visuals, which are no doubt still very good looking to this day, even when compared to the Redux's redone graphical fidelity, I would say the original has a certain style to it that the Redux lacks. Sound is up next and wouldn't you know it? The game sounds pretty great, lots of underground echoes and odd noises, the sounds of monsters roaring or growling all around you, its all really well done. I did run into some glitches from time to time, but I think that varies from setup to setup. I found it used sound very well, but what was understated was the music. Often times I couldn't even tell if their was music playing and it didn't always fit the scene or the mood or the tone. Kind of turned out sounding generic as far as music goes. Last Light I'm aware has more of an action music tone, which is fine, but I couldn't pick out anything memorable from either game music-wise. Now the game play can be split between stealth, and full on firefights. Most players on normal difficulty can actually get through most firefights with a bit of good aim and just getting the jump on the unfortunately non-challenging artificial intelligence most enemies have. Which isn't really a surprise, in most situations they just overwhelm you with firepower or numbers, not actual tactics. They don't use tactics to fight you, not even the monsters use much in the way of strategy to kill you. The humans fights are probably the best fights in the game because you know at least they will drop ammo for your guns and are terribly stupid. The monsters on the other hand, do stupid amounts of damage to the player to make up for how poor their AI is. This presents an issue when playing with any kind of "stealth." Sure its totally feasible to get through some sections using throwing knives, but its incredibly boring and I'm not sure where the incentive is to do so. Some areas are even designed for a stealth sorta "route," but it just doesn't work when the AI acts like a hive-mind should they hear you, instantly knowing where you are and where to start shooting. I'm not even sure if the monster fights are worth skipping since you'll find the level design in most areas somewhat perplexing and frustrating to navigate. Its almost as though they knew how linear the game was when they were developing it and decided to throw in a lot of confusing segments to create more of a challenge. In all honesty, this makes navigating more stressful than necessary, especially when you're getting caught on scenery during a tense fight with a couple of mutated beasts. Take for instance an early segment that was very confusing to get through for a first time player, the bridge covered with neo-Nazi's. This level alone is incredibly frustrating due to the fact that if one of the enemies across the bridge sights you, then you'll end up fighting all of them from one side. Of course the main issue I had was the fact that it was incredibly confusing as to where to go. You come up the tunnel, pass the bridge, go down the stairs, go to other side of another bridge, go through a door, go down the stairs, find another passage and then from memory I believe that's the end of that level. So how long did it take to get through this very linear area? A whole hour. A whole hour of attempting stealth kills, sneaking past enemies, and in the end it was easier to just plow through and kill every enemy in the area. Metro 2033 is very good at artificially wasting your time, some levels are very short, but they place certain enemies, or make paths difficult to get through on purpose it would seem, to elongate game play time. I can't really comment on the story since videogames are not books and vice versa. I'm sure the plot is fine, but I wasn't drawn in by anything in particular. I never really cared about coming the stories conclusion, I didn't really care about the plight of your station, nor did I have much concern for characters I didn't know dying here or there throughout. Metro 2033 remains a poor mans first person shooter, with lovely visuals, excellent atmosphere, sound and some creepy monster designs, but those elements aside, its presentation is weak, and it comes of as a bit of an amateur effort. Metro 2033 is solid, but struggles to set itself apart from more memorable games like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series which though flawed are much better games. Expand

I suppose the developers realized how short the game was so they just made it harder so the player would thing the game was longer.

A very annoying element to the game is the overly loud wheezing and breathing with the mask on. I had to eventually turn down the sound and switch to subtitles to get a little relief. Even though the graphics was excellent, the developers went out of their way to try to visually degrade that quality when the player is wearing a mask. It didn't really add anything to the game by degrading the quality that much. It was jut another annoyance. Why do game developers like flashlights that last only a few minutes. Why not bring back kerosene miner's helmets? Get a load of the size of the charging unit!

Metro 2033 has an interesting story, nice music and stunning visuals and can be very immersive at times. Unfortunately, the game also has many problems.

Technical problems: There are bugs with the default configuration that you have to bypass before you can properly play the game. Enabling Vsync strangely improves the performance quite a bit and the default field of view is way too narrow and has to be changed in two config files. Aim sensivity is also messed up: It's too high for scoped weapons and too low for iron sights. It can be adjusted, but there's no way to make it good for both.

Save games: The save locations are bad and there's no way to quick save or anything. Auto saving at fixed locations makes the saves a lot smaller, but the spots should be chosen carefully. I had to reload a chapter at least twice, because the game saved in situations that made it impossible to continue.

The AI is pathetic: When one enemy notices you, every opponent in the map is locked on to you like an aimbot. This makes stealth play almost impossible. The enemies are even trying to shoot you through walls from points where they absolutely can't see or hear you, that's how hard they cheat. They also have unlimited ammo, naturally, and wearing a helmet means they can take several shots to the face.

Game mechanics are poor and not properly explained: Pressing reload too long will load your military grade ammo (which serve as the game's currency) into your weapon and literally makes you shoot money at your opponents.

Many of these problems (bad config, save system, dumbed down game mechanics) are typical console problems, so we once again have a very poorly adjusted port.

I initially stopped playing as the first few levels are very poor and frustrating, because of the terrible save points, as mentioned before, and the AI of the human enemies is super bad. I eventually continued and finished the game and I'm glad I did. I don't want to spoil anything, but the game really gets a lot better in the second half.

After all, Metro 2033 could have been great, but it's just good, because of the many bugs and oversights.

This game has a fantastic immersing and well designed environment, very detailed and creepy. The storyline it's good, but nothing astonishing. I like the fact that we are in a post-apocalyptic Moscow where every bullet, air filter and med-pack are essential to survive, so we have to be very careful with our limited resources. Except for the voices, the sound is pretty good. All the environment sounds and the beasts roars are scary as hell. The main problem of this game it's it poor and bad designed combat. The enemies and beasts knows exactly where you are, even if they haven't seen you and takes a huge amount of ammo to kill them in all difficulties. Also, they have a excellent precision at long distances with any weapon, which is very unrealistic. Apart from that, the game is very lineal, you can't explore anything, which is a pity due to the excellent environment design. To end this, I want to mention two details: Artyom is very boring, you can't see his face and doesn't talk and the graphic system is really bad optimized, so, if you don't have a very good computer, you will be suffering lag everytime.

    To sum up:

The best: extremely innmersive and terrifyng post-apocalyptic Moscow.

The worst: the poor and bad designed shooting combat.

Lots of killing, good voice acting, graphics are good. The steam version of the game has a bug that makes it crash at Chapter 4 The Depot. Tried the "fix": stand up, face backwards, lowest resolution, mask and lights off, click heels together three times. Can't pass the glitch. Still waiting for this 'interesting story' to appear in Chapter 4 of 7: won't hold my breath. Wasn't enjoying itLots of killing, good voice acting, graphics are good. I'm glad I got this game mostly free with Humble Bundle. I CANNOT stand Checkpoint saves. Stupid console clone. If it had been made from the ground up on the PC, it would have had a much better interface and the ability to save at will.

I would Say The Game is good and bad at the same time cause the atmosphere of the game was good, the story and the AMAZING graphics! But the bad things about it was the characters and enemies.
First i'll go with the enemies then the characters.
The enemies are pretty much too smart and they are so hard to hit even with like one of the most powerful gun in the game but they won't die!

Now on too the characters The characters have good back story they're good and all BUT they are just TOUR GUIDES they just kill all the enemies for you and soak up the potential of the game... I hope you think this is a honest review

Your enjoyment of Metro 2033 hinges on your willingness to let a game batter you into submission.
  2. 4A Games leaves you no choice but to engage with the gameplay of Metro 2033 because of its dark tone and great story. Hardcore gamers looking for a unique experience in PC ultimately will be rewarded by this atmospheric and fast-paced shooter.

Novel and videogame join to compose a very interesting proposal in the saturated first person action genre.
