    The physics and actual gameplay of the game r good due to a quality 3rd party game engine (cryengine i believe). However the nuts and bolts that have been done by the company PGI miss the mark entirely, Firstly instead of random grouping when joining, the game rigs the grouping based on previous individuals game results. This however is deeply flawed resulting in ridiculously one sided games very frequently. In regular game play it's 12 men per side, 24 total and far too many games end in 12-0 or similar results. This takes away from the enjoyment and penalizes the veteren players as they are often paired with much lesser accomplished players and end up getting wiped out in a regular pug. Conversely you can join with groups of up to 4 players further rigging the outcomes.
    If a veteren player takes in a new mech robot that hasn't been fully leveled up and or lesser than the robot they had previously had good results with, the game does not take this into account. Making it much more difficult to level the mech up. This has been mentioned constantly since the game was released and they still heven't gotten it right. They would have much better success with random groups. Period. Or at least have a separate option to play entirely random games(no group drops no psr) .
    Next is the Mechlab UI. The place where you do all your robot configurations among other things. It's ridiculously counter intuitive and unnecessarily tedious. For example from the main menu it takes at least 9 to 10 mouse clicks on various tabs and buttons to assign one skill point to a new unleveled mech. Once you click save, it automatically and ridiculously kicks you back to the main menu instead of leaving you in the tab you are in, forcing you to go through the whole routine again if you fogotten something or wanted to continue to evaluate the robot you were working on. Horribly conceived.
    Next is the text chat. Again ridiculously clunky and cryptic. Amateur hour here. You have to press different buttons to talk with either just your team or all players in game. This would be fine except it doesn't work this way if you are dead and want to continue to chat. Then it defaults to all chat. This would probably be acceptable except if you die while texting or are texting in transition between game lobby and game starting your message is cut off resulting in unintelligable portions of messages being sent. Horrible! This hasn't been addressed since day one, near 10years.
    Another thing is the banning of certain names. For some reason this company doesn't like the word "NOOB". If you've been found to have this word in any portion of your player name, for example Noobboy or Canadiannooby etc the company unilaterally bans your name and turns it into its generic "mechwarriorxxxxxx". I can't remember when I've ever seen something more anal or ridiculous with a company.
    The game population has dwindled to a shadow of what it once was due to all of the reasons stated above as well as others. They were and are too slow to respond to the majority of paying customers and the exodus was the result. When people became impatient and discontent the company blamed those individuals for the migration instead of immediatley understanding that people were trying to help. They ended up alienating and making their base estranged. Only themselves to blame.
    With the state of this game now I can only conclude that the people responsible for this company have coddled to a very narrow quirky few that are ridiculously rigid and live in a bubble.
    I would give the game a 7 for gameplay but I give it a 0 due to all the things that detract from it and how quickly they make the game get old. Lastly the game is what 10 years old now...and it still has bugs with players getting randomly disconnected. They try to relog quickly to find that while they were rebooting the game they've been killed. They receive a time penalty because they left the game prematurely and they receive no rewards. There's no excuse for this epic a failure to resolve issues that have been there forever. At least none they've given that rings true.    … Expand

    Great game! I really enjoy shooting other people mechs. The gameplay is great, Making and building our mech is fantastic! you can change a lot of aspects of your mech! like armor, engine, ammo, heat and jump jets and more.

    Grahpics are good. like the mech and their cockpit is good. You got an startup animation which i enjoy watching everytime i go and play. It feels like the negative    Great game!     It feels like the negative reviews are botted. But keep in mind that most of them are old. like from the 2012 to 2018 era and the game is not pay to win. just find a mech that suites you and your good to go.
    for you who is i having freezing issues it is probably because your pc is not good at runing this game.

    Maps are a joke, always have, always will. They are either small and wide open, or large and wide open, and are generally all very flat and poorly segmented, if at all. Little to no thought was put into their design, and they allow for nearly zero movement options. There is no flow to a match because of this, and many matches are just simply Mexican standoffs, or head-on charges, as there is literally no way for anyone to actually move without being seen or covered between map segments, making it almost impossible to properly flank or apply any strategy mobility wise. This is probably the single biggest failing concerning MWO's gameplay, and overall design. 24 Players on these maps is simply absurd, and downright boring. They could really badly use another playlist or 2 with tweaked maps, and lower player counts, to help alleviate these issues. Only problem with that, is it would require a little more work, with some more robust servers, and PGI will never pay for more then the bare minimum to support this game.

    As far as load-outs go, there is literally only a single usable "strategy" available, and that is, "which weapons provide the best DPS", and tends to favor specific ranges, and it all depends on what the dev team deems to be the best at any given time. This is frustrating, as mobility, positioning, and flexibility, don't mean squat in the face of nowhere to run (bad, over-crowded, open maps) and superior DPS (especially using Coolshot items). Gameplay is severely limited, and features downright stupid design, for this so called "thinking person's shooter".

    There are still ways to abuse the quickplay matchmaking, and when population starts to thin out later in the day (or it's just plain dead ), you will suddenly find yourself getting damn near 2 shot, by weak, short ranged weapons, from well beyond their effective ranges. I wonder what that could ever possibly be now. Not cheating, no, never! MWO is just TOO PERFECT for that!

    PGI is downright awful about banning known cheaters and grifers, as in, they never do it, despite having a report system. Most griefers can be seen still playing years later, even after tons of reports, from just about everybody they play with.

    Not to mention, for a game that is strictly a competitive one, the servers are literally the absolute worse I have ever seen in a game. Period. My ping in most games that are well looked after and properly maintained, is around an average of 40 ms, over a pure wireless network, with a generic AC wifi card. Wired, and it's generally 20-40 all day. On MWO, however, the highest I have seen for myself, is between 80-90 ms, but wait! It can, and it does (quite frequently), go as high as 250+ ms, regardless of region. I am definitely no expert, but it is BEYOND clear to me, that something is very, very, VERY wrong, with the netcode and server solutions, that are used by PGI. To say the very, damn, least.

    I remember much less lag and connection issues in games such as Tribes and Unreal. That were over dial-up connections. It's a total joke, and completely pathetic.

    They still lock new releases behind pay-walls, then nerf them.

    They still charge way too much, for far too little.

    They still refuse to fix any of the games actual core issues, or legitimately better (THROW OUT) their absolutely obnoxious f2p (pay2not-grind) model.

    Mechwarrior Online is still just a shameless, money grabbing F2P.

    Nothing has really changed with this game, and it never will.

    The core community is as hilarious, as it is outright horrendous. A decent chunk of the players are completely, 100% clueless old timers, who are WAY behind the times, totally out-of touch, and think this is all A-OK, and every-other game is just as horrible and poorly performing. The other half are people who are knowledgeable of these issues, and take full advantage of them, with PGI's blessing, of course. PGI has a nasty habit of giving preferential treatment to those faithful fans who buy mech packs, spend money every now-and-again, and are sure to rub elbows with admins in the forums, or even customer service staff (maybe tell your idiot players to NOT name drop your staff, especially as threats? Right, Patience?). Those faithful are pretty much allowed free-reign over the game, doing as they wish with utter impunity.

    Long-as-hell story short, MWO is a complete and utter cesspool of an experience. It has the bones of something that could have always been great, but was squandered by incredibly short-sighted greed, pandering to an outspoken, idiotic, toxic minority, and general gross incompetence.

    And there are people still paying into this. That genuinely blows my mind.    … Expand

    - many Gameplay modes - Single random matches - Group random matches - Faction random drops (Clan fighting mode) - Faction closed drops up to 12 Players each side, different Game modes - Good Graphic, i should give 8/10 - excellent sounds and computer voice 10/10 - mods for sound/music - mostly good teamplay, with role based combat - good damage model - many events with    Pro's

    - Single random matches
    - Group random matches

    - Playerbase is small. about 700-2500 players at the same time online. But its enough.
    - some events are senseless pewpew events. but you can win some stuff. In this time, players are fighting with mech's and weapons only for the event goals.
    - hard to learn
    - many functions and configs

    MWO is one of the best games i ever player. But its also one of the hardest game to master.
    You cant go inside and shot around like in War Thunder, World of Tanks etc. You need some time to, master the game.    … Expand

    1) Fast matches ..about ten minutes.
    2) Casual matches are possible and fun 3) Entertaining even in solo queue. 4) Polite community! 4 bis) Polite community!!     10) Reading guides, tutorials, and so on on this game it's not mandatory to have fun (and be good at) ...just pratice and maybe some previous experiences with old Mechwarrior games (4 example mechwarrior 2 or 3 or 4)

    12) Registration is fast and hassle free trough steam ...also it does not install sneaky unwanted software.
    For me it is a eigth in it's category (free multiplayer sci-fi simulation game) but I didn't play it competitively so I can't rate that aspect of the game.

    2. Non cosmetic premium items, and golden/premium Mechs, was a blatant milking of the mechwarrior fanbase.
    3. Gameplay is fairly basic and poorly balanced due to addition of the newest premium Mech, and nurffing/rendering useless of previous premium Mechs rendering them Obsolete.
    4. High level Clan wars manipulation with mass accounts, and poor administration of Clan wars activities, by the Developers mean that people who spam alt account clans, to set their clans up for victory dominate the game mode.
    5. Maps are pitifully small and phone booth like considering that you are in a towering war machine.
    6. Underhanded collusion and corporate pressure to get another Mechwarrior project shut down (Legends). you will have to google it, it took a long time for details of what happened to come out (it has been revived recently)
    7. Sound effects are really bad and repetitive, you get really sick and tired of the audio in this game the music is also garbage.
    8. No real exploration of the mechwarrior lore.

    The first look into this game is amazing if you like the francise.
    But if you try to point bad things out in the forums, then you get banned pretty fast.
    Unless you are a fanboy stay away from this game and use your time for something else.

    Don't let them fool you. All the latest and newest mechs are always more OP than the previous mechs. The people who get access to the new mechs are the people who pay real money for it. If you pre-order a mech with real money you get access to it months before regular players do.     Its pretty bad. There are 4 or 5 mechs that you must pilot to have a chance. There are quite a few mechs actually avaliable, but if you aren't piloting one of these "meta" mechs then you dont stand a chance.

    I was a founder for this game, and it has let me down from start to finish for the following reasons:

    1. Devs don't listen to the community, or if they do, it takes them 3-5 months to release a simple patch for something that is horribly broken. To further my point, this game was in open beta for 3 YEARS. They developer SLOW AS HECK! I mean, this is some DayZ-rate development! I'll    I was a founder for this game, and it has let me down from start to finish for the following reasons:

    1. Devs don't listen to the community, or if they do, it takes them 3-5 months to release a simple patch for something that is horribly broken. To further my point, this game was in open beta for 3 YEARS. They developer SLOW AS HECK! I mean, this is some DayZ-rate development! I'll probably be dead before that game is done!

    2. You pay 20$ for a nice mech, and 3 months later a new mech comes out that is designed specifically to kill your mech, and it costs another $20

    3. The maps are absolutely terrible, and not balanced at all.

    4. Heavy-handed attempts at fixing balance serve no other purpose than to break intricate mech builds and render all your hours of effort obsolete every couple of months.

    5. The majority of people playing this game nowadays are apparently not bothered by 1-4 and play all the time. The game has a VERY steep learning curve because of all the time and $ that goes into building proper mechs, and because of this new players are scared off by how expensive and hard it is.

    I haven't played the game in a year because of how bad it was in 2015 - terrible user interface and awful grind. I decided to download the massive update (took nearly 3hours for the updates) and try it out. It's no better now than it was a year ago - worse actually because they stopped giving away free items (the game is basically pay to win).     It's a first Mechwarrior that I have ever played and I must say I didn't like it at the beginning as the configuration UI is not very user friendly.
    In the first gameplay I got shot dead within the first 3 minutes by playing Quake style (frag, frag, frag) and I left it on the shelve. Later a friend convinced me to give it another go but this time by playing with group of friends. I    It's a first Mechwarrior that I have ever played and I must say I didn't like it at the beginning as the configuration UI is not very user friendly.

    I think all the negatives reviewers had my experience and basically didn’t dive enough into the game and therefore don’t understand it possibly comparing it to typical Call of Duty like shooters. I can tell you this game is very challenging and is not for everyone. I’m finding it absolutely fantastic! The complexity of this game is just outstanding.

    It requires a lot of hours to learn about a lot of stuff: controlling Mech, knowing engines, equipment, guns, heat sinks etc... It makes you know precisely every single Mech and its strengths and weaknesses, which in turns helps you to be a better team player and helps you to find weak points of the enemy. It also makes you learn all the corners of all the maps and their strategic meaning. It is constant analysis of enemy/team movements and making the right choice.

    On top of that you can play this game for free! I’m incapable of not giving it 10 out of 10.    … Expand

    Since beta this game has been a roller coaster ride. The competitive community, overall history of Mechwarrior, and what this game has the potential to be are what I base this score on. For those who are looking for the traditional BattleTech experience, as with previous Mechwarrior titles I'm not sure you will find it in this game. Its faction warfare is basically fighting over the same few chokepoint maps for the right to color in a dot on the map, with no logistics or consequences for fighting whatsoever. It is possible to not play this meta but you will be at a disadvantage. The business model is a ripoff, with the price per Mech at ridiculous levels of real $, and there does not seem to be a coherent development plan beyond releasing the next Mech and maybe jiggling around some quirks, creating as many problems as it solves. The game has potential but the developers seem to be consistently picking the least inspired and easiest $ squeezing way out.… Expand

    + Great Community. Lots of mature players with good backgrounds. Had a great time. + Base game is good. Have a try. (Although only 1/4 pillar has been done and that's Mech Warfare.) Cons - 4/4 pillars never been accomplished. Role Warfare is not present. Community Warfare is basic and shallow.     - A certain guy is still employeed after #auniversetoexplore - Part Deux screw up.
    - Dynamic geometry have destroyed the unique look of all mechs.
    - E-sports will destroy this game. CEO does not care, all he see is dollar signs. If your strategy is not right E-sport will cause like poison.
    - Founders and players supporting PGI's bad habits. They should know better by know.
    - Founders who haven't experienced better development cycles are still spending cash on this game.
    - Learning curve is like a pig with two eyes in the back. Steep learning curve. NPE is still terrible.
    - Increased trash talking and more about tiers. Called and expected it. Was a matter of time.
    - Gamedesigner on board who come up with idea's like 'Ghost heat', 'Laser lock range nerf' and all kind of silly easy canned idea's to ruin mechanics. There's no creativity, original idea's to be found. Simple, easy canned minimum effort is the way to go. PGI will always go for the easiest solution. Hence all the ongoing extreme balance attempts.
    - Maps are wasted resources. Terrible quality and MWO is short on 'good' maps. Game still run on a handfull of maps.
    - Mechwarrior Online became from a beautiful simple yet effective slow paced mech simulator in a generic speedy twitch shooter.
    - Mixed tech is seen in all matches. From IS to Clan. It does not matter if you are from the IS, the Clanners or IIC; there is no depth to be seen. No star lances and so on. Just like the gamemodes: from Assault to Conquest and Skirmish
    - Module and consumables- money sink. Same for the overpriced paints in Mechlab.
    - Most members of the Community gravitates towards one mouse button. Perhaps two with a maximum of three different fire groups. By nature people always go for the easiest option. Boating is still largely present.
    - /Mwo and Outreach. Negative squad brigade versus positive squad brigade. Feels Outreach is full of delusional -happy joy joy- people. Sorry - stating a few observations. Splitted niche Community.
    - No solid competitive scene. I mean a original, real and complete featured competitive enviroment.
    - In-experienced game studio with a terrible management.
    - Official forums is a echo-chamber.
    - One guy actively communicating trough one (capped) channel of 140 characters. The rest of the devs does not communicate at all.
    - Poor quality control. Founders are the testers.
    - PSR is like a sack of potatoes. The 'higher' tiers are flawed. Alot of people do not belong in tier one. Yet it's still a XP bar then a actual challenging tier system (I was a high comp. player around 1999-2005.)
    - (Mech)scaling still inconsistent.
    - Selling mech packs at high prices while you can get any other if not a better game with actual features for the same price. Or even two games. ($80 mechpack for 4-5 mechs with the same look, just different paints.)
    - Stubborn people who are still wasting money on this broken game. False hope is a serial killer.
    - Shallow skills and master trees.
    - Speed of development is astronomically low. Go count each month what this gamestudio has done and convert content, each 'fix' etc. to manhours and days and then you will realise it doesnt match up. For a full month of develop time it's.. well i dont bother. You figure it out. As soon i found out i didnt pay for this no longer.
    - The game does not promote teamwork at all. It's a teambased game. Yet most people are found in the solo que. No basic text shouting or a commo-rose to improve teamwork. No decent comm tools.
    - There. Is. No. Single. Depth. Basically a arena filled with stiff ragdolled mechs.
    - This game is not competitive. It's broken and does not represent comp. play.
    - Twitter followers keep supporting bad habits.
    - Terrible grinding. Has been adjusted alot of times. Stealth nerfs being applied later.
    - Townhalls: Garbage in, garbage out. (Love that line!)
    - You play for a couple of minutes - team scatters around the whole map and you die. Disconnect and try again. Make sure you don't watch the match. Rinse and repeat. Stale and repetitive gameplay.
    - You preorder plain text and a pencilled image up to 6 months ahead.

    MWO screams wasted potential all over the place and will continue to throw potential away in the near future.

    I have retired from the game not too long ago. I have end my support as a long time Founder. Since the NDA was lifted, back in 2012, i have lost over 40 friends i introduced over in this game. Which is the only game i have that lost this many. And when i scroll my friendlist most of them have been offline for years.    … Expand

    The games development hasn't made any real progress in years and every tiny feature is sold as major milestone. F.e. UI update that destroyed any usability it had before, and so on.
    Hands off, even if the start might be fun, it will be wasted money and time.

    The cost of cash bought Mechs is too much, but the game play itself is fairly good fun. Smaller items like colours and patterns is way too expensive as is consumables.

    With the new Phase 3 I am hopefully it will get better.

    backed this for 80 dollars in 2011, was not impressed by initial release and thought i'll see how it develops. tried the new version this year and sorry to say even worse than before. lame graphics boring game play, terrible community and devs. Worst kickstarter I backed ever. only value is for teamkilling going forward.

    -Some generous events (free mechs)
    -Probably best to drop $20 on a mech pack if you like as will prevent the initial grind (which is bad but gets better after you have some money earning mechs you like)

It would be easy to write reams about it’s history, the tabletop origins and the minis, the fiction and the lore that spans well over one hundred novels, Technical Readout manuals, and the distinguished line of PC and console games but, suffice it to say, the following and anticipation for this game has been huge since the last PC release Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries was about 10 years ago. The bottom line is… Does Mechwarrior Online deliver?

    The short answer is a strong Yes but with major caveats that make portions of MWO seem incomplete and downright clunky as Piranha Games continues to develop this title. There are frustrating refinement issues as a result of the small dev team and development approach adopted by PGI. The road has been rocky for PGI and MWO. By 2013, the word was MWO was a shameless money grab and a lost opportunity to be something great by a disinterested, tunnel-visioned development company. PGI however maintained that their numbers were always strong from a silent fan base despite the bad press and angry fans represented a vocal minority. By 2015, MWO has survived and grown to over half a million registered players (probably 5% playing), a greatly improved community relations approach, increased staff and talent, added and evolved game content, launched servers in Europe and Asia, and has plans to add Steam as an additional distribution method.

    So where does MWO stand presently?

    Free to Play – This is a free to play game that has successfully negotiated the hazy line between pay-to-win and grind-to-insanity. Grinding for in game currency isn't as mindless as some other games and you can build very competitive mechs. If you have the money but don’t have the time, you can pay for content that will save you grind time and effort (such as hero-level mech). Unfortunately for the grinding player, some things (such as mech-enhancement modules) are over-priced and newly introduced mechs are only available with real money at first so paying players tend to dominate game play when new mechs are injected into the game. It takes about 3 months before these new mechs become available for purchase with grindable currency.

    Multiplayer – MWO delivers solid and refreshing mech combat. Public matches are easy to access offering 12v12 combat that feels more than adequate (and sometimes glorious) as the teams tactically engage each other in rolling brawl fests of blistering lasers and canon fire. There is plenty of long range sniping, missile barrages, and air strikes to be had as well. Private matches between organized teams can be accessed from group menu as long as at least the captains of each team are premium subscribed players. These are often used for various tournaments and league matches. Currently in playable beta is planetary combat based on the classic star map of Battletech. This feature represents another pillar of the game and supports attack, defend, and counter attack modes.

    SinglePlayer – There no single player experience in MWO much to the disappointment of fans. PGI has said this could be added in the future after all the goals of the multiplayer game have been adequately completed.

    Graphics – Visually enticing and exciting graphics but this is where more and development is needed. The mechs themselves are beautifully designed (if you can call a mechanized bipedal war machine beautiful) and are unequivocally superior to any designs of past MW titles. Newer maps tend to be rich and visually varied with cityscapes, lunar, industrial, alien marshes and barren deserts. Older maps produced during beta and up to about 2014 tend to be smaller, dated looking, use repeated textures and are otherwise beta-level content. PGI has a team that is currently reworking older maps to update them making them far larger, more interesting, adding day and night cycles, destroyable content such as trees and streetlamps.

    Over all MWO is a solid combat action sim surrounded by layers of potentially wow-factor content if ever finished. The key to MWO is connecting with a team as solo public play feels more like grinding and team play feels more like the real game. MWO of 2015 has more to offer than MWO of 2013. It’s fun and engaging with friends on the field but needs work on nearly all the layers of features. If PGI can address those, MWO will achieve that wow-factor.    … Expand

    Let me start by saying this, ive supported the game since before closed alpha, and i've played previous Mechwarrior games since i was 3 (being 18 now) i remember back when it was still in the works, there were the so called "founders packages" which you would give either 30, 60 or 120 dollars to the company to help support the games production. I, (being an eager 15 year old at the time) purchased the "Elite" founders package, i payed $60 and got early access and some in game loot. Now, back then, i believed the game was very good (and to a point, i still enjoy it today) lacking in any form of single player, but it still had the mechwarrior feel.

    Now, fast forward 3ish years to today, and the core gameplay is just about the same (add some new content and fancier physics) and my opinion of the game has very much soured, Not because of the gameplay, i love how the game feels (excluding some easily spamable weapons) but in the fact that the game is becoming more and more of a cash grab. true, the game itself is free, but the content inside the game is not. When you start, you have zero in game currency, and in order to gain currency, you have to use "trial mechs" (mechs with non-customizable loadouts which change every few months) which fortunately, they give you a fair variety, but its still a fraction of the full games content, So you either spend dozens of hours using the trial mechs to purchase your own arsenal OR you can click that shiny "buy MC (mech credits)" button, which for real world money you can buy in game mechs, which, if the prices were more understandable wouldn't be so bad, EXCEPT for the fact that in most cases they aren't. just for one of the bigger, nicer units in the game you can spend 7000 MC, which is approximately 35 USD, thirty five dollars for a single unit in the game, that's enough to buy a another game! at this point ive already spent $60 on this game, but apparently that isn't enough for this game.

    But that's only where it begins, every five or six months they'll come out with another "collection" of new mechs, but they don't come cheap, they normally start at 20-35 dollars, but the bigger collections tend to go upwards to up to one hundred and twenty dollars. I'd think if your paying that much for a game, you should be entitled to everything the game has to offer, but no, just wait, in about half a year, there will be another hundred dollar collection up for sale. and the thing is, people are buying them, and lets not get started on the "Limited edition gold collection" they had about a year back, which you could pay FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for the previously mentioned $120's of content, and a mech with a gold color skin (easily recreated with paint might i add) and it still saddened me that i would actually see people with these Golden cash grabs, as a eternal reminder to everyone that they spend five hundred dollars for a video game.

    And that's really my big angst with this game, the painful amounts of cash grab and pay to win, the fact that no matter how much money you give them, no matter how much you succumb to their demands, it will never be enough they will always ask for more, and to me that really hurts what would've been an amazing game without it, id be happy to give it an 8 or 9, but just the astronomical costs in this game is just so bad, it angers and disgusts me, yet still i play the game, passing by people who more than willingly payed upwards of $100 for what probably is worth a few bucks of gameplay, but it saddens me to say that im not much better.    … Expand

    · Ineffective in stopping hacks and cheats.
    · New free content is either recycled maps, or challenges for trinkets, as opposed to real free new competitive mechs/gear.
    · Players must pay hundreds of dollars to be competitive or grind for hundreds of hours to obtain competitive mechs/gear.

    The game has incredible potential in the right hands, unfortunately as long as the developer continues to pay off Microsoft, they have zero interest in letting players who have little money, be competitive. The player base is shrinking and all the $500 (real world dollar) gold mechs in the world cannot stop this.

    Ultimately the game suffers. The developer is hiding behind a "free to play" name but unless you want to lose over and over again for hundreds of games, you pay. That's not free to play, that's a deception.

    It is F2P, and after the "Cadet Bonus" you receive in your first 25 games to get you started, the grind for a new mech is definitely a grind. But    In it's current state, MWO is by no means a bad game. It still has it's issues, but the gameplay is solid and fun. The developers are slow but they have been making improvements to maps, and the roster of mechs is huge and constantly growing.

    It is F2P, and after the "Cadet Bonus" you receive in your first 25 games to get you started, the grind for a new mech is definitely a grind. But if you're enjoying the game that's no issue. And if you want a change of scenery then you can play one of the many Trial Mechs to try out a different chassis. At the end of the day though, the game IS NOT pay to win. You can get hold of anything you need with gameplay currency, apart from the newest of the new mechs when they first appear in the game.

    Game modes are unfortunately limited to conquest and team deathmatch more or less. The addition of the Community Warfare mode allows you to take a retinue of 4 mechs (within a 240 ton limit) into a single fight to try and overrun a base which makes for more a grand scale battle, but the balance of those missions seems a bit questionable in my experience.

    Anyway, the game is honestly fun. For a free to play strategic shooter, it's worth a few hours a week of playtime. And if you can pay for some premium time (increased income for matches) it makes the grind a lot less grindy. Or if you wait for deals, you can buy mechs relatively cheaply.     Battletech lore is awesome. If you want to auto win buy “Clan” Mechs. Twice or three times the fire power for the same size. If you want to auto win with “Inner Sphere” buy light mech with the biggest engines. Go fast. No lie, the smallest mechs can’t be hit because of hit box and latency issues. So at the end of most matches Inner Sphere    Giant robots (Battle Mech's) are awesome.

    No balance.

    Nothing has clocked up more hours of my time than this game in the last 2 years. The only issue I have with it is that the hit registration seems to go from good to bad and then back again quite constantly which is frustrating. Other than that this game is awesome.

PGI went to them & said "why are we working against each other?" which is nothing more than tactful introductory speak for "shut down now or we'll legally douche all over you for making a better product than we ever could & doing it with no monetary motivations behind it".

Too bad the developer broke too many promises (or simply forgot about them), doesn't really know how to handle the game engine, has zero experience in designing tactical MMOs more ambitious than Unreal Tournament. Three years have been waisted for bug fixing,I still play it (although less and less) as there simply is no alternative when you want to play a battlemech simulatior on PC. Too bad the developer broke too many promises (or simply forgot about them), doesn't really know how to handle the game engine, has zero experience in designing tactical MMOs more ambitious than Unreal Tournament. Three years have been waisted for bug fixing, nerfing and boosting everything 3 times, creating basic gaming content (like maps) and producing tons of mechs for a brilliant mechlab that actually causes the major issues of this game: had they simply chosen to release stock mechs ONLY no balancing issues, no cheese builds, no frustration would have arisen. Instead the community would have about 200 mechs and their (stock) variants at hand now, happily playing. the other thing is the flawed elo ranking, team building and match maker, especially in Community Warfare mode. They released the BT universe map with over 3000 systems to fight over, BUT every day you are allowed to fight over about 6 or 7 of them. The different factions may even fight in remote areas siding with their arch enemy to face clan invaders without paying for transferring their units over there. The game had minor logistic during beta (ammunition and repair costs) - it was taken out forever... Logistics for sending your mech lance from system A to system B? No, it's instant teleport now, all you need is, that the developer opens the jumo gates for a specific system and there you go. So we have zero strategy in the game, tactics are very thin as you know the mini maps after a few weeks by heart. Players use the mechlab to build overpowered alpha strike (one shot) killer mechs, not well balanced interesting ones, that would allow to show skill and give everybody a fun experience. No, it's all about killing your enemy on sight,preferably by a single mouse click and auto aiming long range missiles. By now I doubt that the developer still has the means to get this cart out of the dreck (or actually the dreck off the cart). Community is tiny and dwindling, so I guess I will play on a little bit until the servers will shut down one day or I really can't stand it anymore.… Expand

    But as you've read what I have written so far, there's obviously nothing to forgive the crap job they've done of providing a fun Mechwarrior Game.

    This game is total and absolute mess. It does not know if it wants to be Call of Duty with mechs or a Mech simulator. You start your "fun" in a trial mech that overheats after 2 shots and get killed within 3 seconds and if that wasn't enough you are matched against veteran players using fully decked out mechs with unlocked skills, pimped out in consumables and modules. A lot of players will tell you in their infinite wisdom that it's for your own good to make you better. But it’s a complete lie; you can't learn anything when you don't even know what is going. After some time frustration kicks in and an overwhelming majority of new players just give up.

    Then the UI that’s managed to be more convoluted and idiotic than EVE Online’s one, a game that is Excel tables in space. People ask how to sell a mech, the UI is THAT BAD. Tutorial’s explains absolutely jack squat. In order to learn the basics like heat management, loadouts, or even the difference between Streak SRM and SRM or Pulse Lasers and Lasers you have to go way out of your way and do a research. If I wanted to do research as if I’m was writing a work for MA I wouldn't be playing a game.

    Then there’s "Meta". It’s very hard for new players to learn tactics and keep up with the fast changing meta. I know it's hard to regulate but it is also PGI's fault to an extent. The changes they introduce feel as they aren't well thought out and it’s new players suffering for it. It’s one extreme to another. When a new player builds a particular mech how in hell is he/she supposed to know that this patch weapon A is good and wep B is obsolete but the next one wep C is suddenly the meta and wep A is so passe. The values/statistic should be constant/semi-constant otherwise it can completely ruin some mechs and new players have no idea that what they use might as well be trying to ram others for all the damage he/she does.

    Then there’s the grind. I understand very well the game has to have some progression system that the grind is suppose to be severe enough to nudge players into buying premium stuff. However this game basically twists your arm and smashes your head against a brick wall to force you into buying stuff. An example, A new player starts the game, He gets cadet bonus (new players don’t even notice and believe that this bonus is normal earnings) it’s enough money to buy a Medium mech with some currency to spare. Now apart from EXTREMELY flawed Trial mech system there is no possible way of testing a mech or mech variant. So if he/she buys a mech they don’t like or know how to use well, they are screwed. Again I hear from players and streamers that if you fall into that pit well... "Tough luck" you better make a new account. How can that even be an option!? Only thing i ever connect with making multiple accounts for an MMO is to either scam or be an ingame bot vendor promoting sites selling gold.

    How could have PGI do this? You really think that an average player that isn’t into masochism will start again to grind through Trial mechs to buy a mech that again might or might not be right for him? Im not asking for charity or for PGI giving stuff away like its candy on Haloween night. I’m asking for a system where new players could either Test the mechs they want (withouth waiting for months on end for the possible mech/variant to maybe possibly appear in Trial rotation) or at least let them sell the mech for 75-85% of the price.

    Lastly the community in this game is awful, perhaps even toxic. There are people who will help you to make build a mech, but there are many more who basically invested so much money into this game that they will rather see it crash and burn than change anything. The idea of Matchmaking for Trials always ends up in flame wars. If someone provides a valid point that could benefit the game and or bring new players in it always ends up “Well we don't want screaming kiddies and noobs that don't know what they are doing or would be bad players in this community anyway". This kind of Elitism reeks even from the Streamers on NGNG that are supposed to promote the game. Worse still PGI loves it. So many Mech packs and mad prices. the free versions are always delayed half a year or more just to milk more people. Later those mechs turn out to be overpowered or woefully underpowered because no one tested them. It's like PGI firmly believed this game lives on borrowed time and instead of making some changes that would counter that they carry on milking every nostalgia whale until the game shuts down due to the lack of playerbase. Their way to make money is self damaging. If you catered to a bigger player base, solving then outlined problems, even if only 30% of them buy anything you still earn more money. 3000 regulars are better than a niche 800 at absurd prices.

    I really hope the best for this game, so far I am less ecstatic about stompy mechs and more disheartened with the current state of the game.    … Expand

It's a watered down version of what was sold to Founders, full of broken promises and lack of optimization. Bad leadership at the top, lack of progress, and stale game play with a terrible grind. It's a disgrace to the Mechwarrior genre. I'd rather buy a game outright then to have the grind required with this game and the miserable performance it has 3 years after I joined it.     The game has gone through many problems, a period of total pay-2-win, but what is the game currently? It's a battletech deathmatch simulator with micro (and not so micro) transactions. Combat is good, prices are high, and the grind is long - but there is fun to be had.

Within the disc was the core game--a game that contained up to 60 'mechs to drive, unlimited customization, a single player campaign with an engaging storyline, a richly composed musical score, and a function to connect to a multiplayer community where people really got to know each other.

    Today, paying $55 dollars to get into Mechwarrior Online can afford you maybe one 'mech and a couple variants to that 'mech, and pretty much lacking most of the mentioned features above. To be fair though, you really don't have to pay a dime to get into Mechwarrior Online, but this is how the developers of the game earn their their money. Generally, getting what you want in the game either involves earning in-game currency by playing with mostly random people on the same three game modes over and over again, or by paying up.

    The game itself is okay though, and hence why I would be hesitant to give it a lower score. To some extent, the sounds and the graphics are top-notch, so it really does feel like you are driving a large 'mech while playing. Most of the maps are beautifully crafted as well.

    What really hinders MWO from the get-go, however, is that it is probably the most hollow game of the series. The lack of features is appalling; the business model is appalling; and the need to grind gets old over time. There are also times when you really don't feel like you accomplished much after a game outside of grabbing a bit of in-game currency and xp to unlock stuff (kind of like your typical F2P game). Factions and the implementation of community warfare seems to improve on the game, but it just doesn't feel like much. Is it a likeable game? Sure. I do like the game myself. You really need to know what you're using as well as what you're doing, so many newbie traps. It’s mandatory to search on forums about what to do. The stuff in game explains so little, for example only by research did i find i could free my chars arms up to shoot better and a FPV is better to aim too.

    2: not just the lack of tutes to understand different heat {which there is the main heat rules for weapons and some sort of extra "ghost heat" for particular weapon combos, no values just random stuff???} the UI is so poorly laid out, menus and menus with the same icons on everything pushing my mech off the side so half of it is cut off. It’s so ugly and tedious to use. The tiny important writing and tiles of pointless picks takes forever to understand. I don't know maybe there’s something there that tells you what a beagle is or why I can never access and ECM.

    3: the gameplay once in a match is laggy and stuff which is kind of typical of games online but why does my shots miss half the time? I see sparks but the damage doesn't seem to register, the jumping falling mechs are terrible to shoot at, I end up just shooting big slow ones but they are always WAY more powerful and defeat you easy.

    4: the main damning thing which makes this a truly awful game is nerds and cash rule with mechs that cool faster run faster and shoot more than your mechs {trials are basics and most are deathtraps} they have boosters with char mastery and extra modules, some have quirks which undoes the ghost heat stuff, that's how screwed up the design is and the MM distinguishes none of this, the UI gives you little to no hints. i found my trial up against these power creep P2W stables and high competitive players a lot. so awful.

    5: the gameplay is cursed by bugs of mechs getting stuck everywhere, graphic glitches, no terrain destruction in a shooter and 12-0 stomps are common cause 4 players can 1 shoot at a mech and it spirals out of control. for something that's supposed to be strategically, players just jam up behind a wall and poke shoot or run around in circles, it's horribly underwhelming and variety is punished by a stale meta of sniping and many missles raining on you. there's no sense of accomplishment, you don't have to do much and you don't feel like you fight anyone, it's pot shots or face hug, the more ganged up on less players wins. ugh.

    6: so to try and become better you try and get what the vets have. Forget it, unless you pay for it. the game money earnings are sub 100K half the time, you’re lucky if you get 200K. weapons are anywhere from 60K to 600K and guess which everyone is boating? a newbie needs stuff to fight with and the cadet bonus will get you a stock mech equipped with the wrong weapons/equipment and all basic levels. You need several million to even START upgrading. You need 50 mill to get a master cause you need 3 mechs for the char levelling to work and to buy modules. Hundreds of hours with a basic mech, it’s an appauling experience. Salt goes in the wound when they offer freebe challenges, like this weeks 30 wins with a kill and assists gets you a free mech. How am I supposed to find the time and be able to achieve that in a stock mech? People played 12+ hours and still couldn’t do it with half levelled mech let alone people in my position. It’s so insulting. Then after every match the devs taunt you with “if you had premium time you could have more” it’s appalling that they call this free to play. The UI has stores and transaction always buy buy buy. Free to play? Free to be everyone’ piñata for months more likely.

    TL;DR game sets your basic mech against totally elite mechs imagine lvl8's vs lvl 70s that were brought with real money, your team might have those too but it's still grossly pay to win. you win a small weapon's worth of cash each match, a mech can take 20 hours to have, it can take 80's to get close to having the master mech cause you need 3 of a type to do it. i have no idea how people have 100 mastered mechs that they bragged about, must've payed a fourtune in this "free to play" game. the playerbase vary's from helpfull to outright rude and mental and saddly these decided your match outcomes, earnings and fun. cause the game offers no more than shootemup+collect mechs gameplay.

    it boring, it's grinding, it’s scaming such high amounts of cash for a shootem up demo.

    MWO is a very good experience. Mech are well designed and give a good experience of fighting in a huge robot. It is the only Mechwarrior game I know that succeed to balance light vs heavy mech. In all other game, bigger is better (more armor, more weapons). In this game, having a light mech is not only fun (high speed, low figure easy to hide) but in the hand of the best player (not me :),MWO is a very good experience. Mech are well designed and give a good experience of fighting in a huge robot. It is the only Mechwarrior game I know that succeed to balance light vs heavy mech.     The game make you really feel piloting a huge robot: I am often hidden behind a building or a hill. I generally try to show, shoot and go back hiding. Often, part of my mech is still behind the building firing, and half my weapon only shoot the building.
    The game has slowly evolve (it is why I put only a 8). But now, it gets a lot of different maps and 4 different game mode (one where you have to assault a huge base, and you have 4 mechs to drop during the battle).

    The game has changed a lot from it's initial states (as any MMO should). There are a lot of mechs and variants available, great customization and building options, good progression system and a nice variety of maps and gamemodes (with the most recent addition of the long-waited Community Warfare and factions).

    PGI is doing a great job updating this game and balancing out the mechs (Mechs that were bad before are getting an increase of popularity due to the quirk system and clan mechs are not just better versions of IS ones anymore, but rather an option which rewards player skill). Also, everyone can get good damage, kills and what not. It does not depend on your mech too much, but rather on how you play and the decisions you make.

    Graphics are good, even though on my below average PC I can barely play on medium with 30 FPS.

    All in all, right now it's a great game and I'd recommend that you play it and make an opinion for yourself. Also, try not to listen to old reviews, a lot has changed since their time period.    … Expand

    Its nice and pretty, amazing detail to the whole world of MechWarrior/Battletech universe. But at the base of it all its just another Free to play arcade game which may hail back to the old days of the IP. Its lacking in what some gamers that liked MechWarrior in the middle of the series of games, was a story and some single player offline action.

    If you haven't played MW:O, or indeed any MechWarrior game before, it is a game of giant mech combat,    MW:O is a turbulent game. With a poorly handled launch, and frankly the following year or so, the developers did not do well with the game. However, with the removal of IGP as publishers, PGI have taken great strides in repairing the game to make it enjoyable and worth your while.

    If you haven't played MW:O, or indeed any MechWarrior game before, it is a game of giant mech combat, although unlike previous games which have been much more grounded in simulation, MW:O is much easier to access for new players. There are a variety of 'Mech chassis, at the time of writing over 40, and each is divided into one of four weight classes, from 'light' to 'assault'. Each 'Mech has different hardpoints and equipment, and specialises in different types of combat, such as sniping or brawling.

    Another important part of the game is customisation, of which there is lots of. Heavily based on the BattleTech table top war game of which MechWarrior originated from, players are able to modify armour, weapons, equipment and more to create their own personal variants of 'Mechs, meaning that you never quite know what your opponent is packing.

    The combat itself can be incredibly addictive, taking parts both from the slower paced previous games with much more confined, arena style maps ensuring combat can be both slow and strategic and quick and brutal. Newbies can expect to make many mistakes that will usually get them killed, although if they are willing to stick with the learning curve, can find an incredibly rewarding game underneath.

    This is not without bad points, of course. MechWarrior fans of previous games may find it frustrating that the game values arena gameplay more than open field combat. Furthermore, the weapon values have been balanced in a way that means combat will always be relatively close range, although the sniper or missile support roles are still entirely viable.

    This of course leads to the most controversial element of MechWarrior: Online. The Free2Play business model. This has had some ups and downs, and still has some sore areas. For example, purchasing paints and camos can be highly expensive in real world money. Likewise, many may find it insane that the 'pre-order' packs for new 'Mechs can easily go into the hundreds of dollars for the top tiers.

    However, this is of course forgetting that MechWarrior: Online is a relatively small game in terms of audience, and caters for enthusiasts. And, to say that MechWarrior: Online requires money to play, is entirely incorrect. Every 'Mech in the game can be purchased with the in-game currency 'c-bills', along with nearly every piece of equipment, weapon or upgrade. Indeed, much of this can only be purchased with c-bills. Restricted real-world currency items are limited to colours, camos, 'hero' 'Mechs, which are simply alternative variants with unique camos, and cockpit decorative items. Hence, the game is entirely playable without spending a cent, and in many ways this justifies the high prices.

    The final element is variety of gameplay. This has been another sore point for some time as MechWarrior: Online has previously been limited to skirmish style matches, which lack the strategic depth many have come to expect from a MechWarrior title. Recently, however, PGI have released the much anticipated Community Warfare game mode, which allows players to compete on a real time 3D map of the Inner Sphere, choosing to fight for IS houses or Clans, and creating unit groups and competing in new attack/defend game modes and maps. This adds a new element of gameplay that is sure to be expanded upon in the future.

    So, in summary, MechWarrior: Online has had a bumpy road. There is no doubt about it that the game was poorly handled early on, either by publisher or developer, and didn't achieve many of its goals. However, it would seem a new era for PGI has dawned, and with a sudden jump in content, game modes, community interactivity and balancing, there has never been a better time to check it back out.    … Expand

Poor coding, constant money grabs (but to be fair, you don't have to give them money if you don't want it) total lack of respect to the lore and absolutely incompetent game designer (Paul Inouye).

    I have been playing since closed beta as an original founder. There was not much going on for most of 2013, but the changes since PGI took sole responsibility have been very encouraging. It is an exciting time to be a mechwarrior.

    This game is completely free to play. It gives you 4 mechbays to start, which you need to house your mech. Mechbays (and customizations like certain colours and cockpit flair) are the only things that cost real money (MC), though the MC currency used and the mechbays themselves are sometimes offered as prizes during weekend competitions. It is entirely possible to collect quite a few free mechbays and maintain a full roster of mechs without paying a dime.

    The other in-game currency (C-Bills) are awarded after each match. To give you an idea on the grind, the economy is generally as follows:

    You can make roughly 500K - 1 million c-bills an hour, depending on how the matches went, which goes towards buying mechs, weapons, upgrades, etc... Light mechs are roughly 1-4 million, medium mechs 4-6 million, heavy mechs 6-8 million and assault mechs are 8-10 million. Upgrades to make your mech competitive (endosteel, double heat sinks) will cost another 2-3 million c-bills.

    As a new player the first 25 matches gives you an extra bonus so you can use the c-bills from those 25 matches to purchase whichever mech you like. You will have about 10-15 million after the newbie bonus is up. Make your choice wisely!

    One last note is that the game balance is constantly shifting as PGI adds mech quirks and weapon changes. I feel the game is going in the right direction. Still what we now have in community warfare is something that should have been released 2 years ago... Better late than never!    … Expand

However, yet again this free to play game is ruined by you being forced to pay just to get an OK mech outside of the 4 free ones you are given. SPOILER ALERT Takes a month to get your first free mech with out spending any money. Then you need atleast 2 just to get started on the ingame tech trees that add so much stuff to your mechs and make you so OP. This game would have gotten a better rating if it wasn't such a big grind. However, they really messed this game up and made it too pay 2 win.… Expand

    The game promises a foundation of interesting mechanics such as individual avatar customization, a team-based arena combat setting, individual component damage, dynamic and unique weapons with their own situational mechanics, and a large scale persistent universe with separate factions and mercenary corporations all vying for control of a galactic map. Of these things only customization, arena combat, and per-component damage have actually been implemented. Those things which have actually been added to MWO have been implemented with such haphazard and wanton carelessness that basic functions can be expected to misfunction, malfunction, or be so hidden behind convoluted menus and other user interface foibles such that they needn't exist at all.

    By bringing in contractors early into the game's development to design and implement basic systems the developers have been able to produce a partially functional multiplayer game, but after reaching the threshold of minimum viability they have no longer employed competent contractors and have instead relied upon their own spit-and-glue approach to coding and game design and implementation, and the patchwork shows. Simple elements like terrain collision meshes are misplaced, incorrectly sized and scaled to the terrain, or nonexistent, leading to aberrant gameplay and an experience oozing with a sense of low quality. In lieu of optimization the dev team has reduced or completely eliminated graphical effects and high quality rendering options, leaving the game a poorly running mess sure to increase your electric bill beyond any reasonable level regardless of how much you have invested into your PC. While playing the actual game the MechLab function runs in the background, making render calls and tying up system resources otherwise usable for the game client. On top of this, if using a high enough refresh rate monitor, frames of the MechLab will actually *be printed to the monitor* between frames of gameplay, leading to a jarring and unpleasant gaming experience.

    The developers have managed to keep the project floating in two ways: firstly by leveraging the devotion of long-time fans of the "Battletech" and "MechWarrior" franchise through a system of gradually escalating power creep based cash-only content releases, and secondly by appealing to the Canadian government for cash handouts on the basis of creating employment opportunities for Canadians, all the while maintaining a skeleton crew and generating little in the way of actual product. After growing tired of maintaining the charade of continuing to develop MechWarrior Online the developers took development resources and personnel from the title to put toward the creation of another title "Transverse" in an attempt to cash in on the blooming space sim customer base.

    While new players may be drawn in by the promise of flashy robots and deep immersive gameplay, the harsh new player experience in the form of counter-intuitive user interface, obfuscated and poorly implemented game mechanics, a sharp difficulty curve, and the need to pour many hours of gameplay before you have the resources necessary to truly be competitive and "successful" will quickly take the luster out of the game and prove frustrating and unpleasant to even the most sanguine player.

    If given the option to play MechWarrior Online or reinstall the last iteration in the series, MechWarrior 4 (2000), I would surely choose the latter and completely disregard the former.    … Expand

    i notice the lack of recent reviews on the game and its content. so allow me to enlighten you, mechwarrior online has been the main gave i have played for what will soon be three years if i am correct, right after it came out of open beta.     the game has a great structure but suffers from a bad match making system as does all games. you defiantly need to have at least a little intelligence, COD players are a joke among the community and if your "competitive experience" is battlefield, you wont do well.

    This game IS pretty and has some of the spirit of the genre that has spanned over 25 years of writing and game development, but its very shallow. There is no in-game voice chat support or command structure keys so you're left to play single player death match and type unless you use a third party chat. The developers constantly suck in new players and wave the bait of new content coming but then release a re-skin every once and while to keep the old and new fans hooked on spending more money. This game is quite buggy for being over two to three years out of Beta and officially "released". Expect an outlay of $20-$80.00 just to get new mechs that will eventually be released later anyhow.

    As a fan of the genre I'll admit I'm burnt out at this games lack of progress and used car salesman approach to offering products. I come back now and then and find that nothing has changed since I first joined up with this game over TWO years ago.     The good: + The game is not paytowin anymore. They've released "premium" stuff to be available for everyone. Recently "quirks" have been updated to bring Clan and IS mechs closer for the sake of game balance. + There are new module types and a new map or two.     The good:
    + The game is not paytowin anymore. They've released "premium" stuff to be available for everyone. Recently "quirks" have been updated to bring Clan and IS mechs closer for the sake of game balance.
    + There are new module types and a new map or two. There are also challenges (mostly on weekends) that give you some stuff you usually have to pay for.
    +The game is starting (slowly) to connect with lore. If Community Warfare proves to be a success, the game will deserve 10/10.

    The bad:
    - You might want to skip it if you want some storyline or glitter. Glitter costs $$$!
    - If you want to keep trying out new mechs, you'll either have to invest a lot of time or a lot of money. But there's not much to try! And that's a good thing. All the IS equipment fits all IS mechs. Try Stalkers, Locusts and maybe Jagermechs. By the time you master these, you'll have plenty of in-game hours. Sell the ones you won't play with. Garage slots are a semi-frequent challenge reward now so you shouldn't have any problems with that.
    - There's STILL no radio for music or chatter in your cockpit. Although having your own fixes that :D
    - Lack of tutorial. You have "Testing Grounds" - choose which map you want to test your mech on before going PvP with it. Check the controls and see what each button does. That's it. Not very beginner-friendly.    … Expand

I can say at this point they are making real progress and with the launch of CW this winter could have a real winner on their hands very soon. If you have any interest in Mechwarrior or slow tactical mech combat give it a shot or keep an eye on this one.     I could leave it at that, but...the blatant scam taking place since the so cold launch up until now deserves some additional comments.

    The only development taking place post launch is the tweaking of stats, churning out expensive pay to play mech variants at jaw-droppingly steep prices and the rearranging of forums with the obvious aim of hiding any criticism. There are no regional servers, meaning playing from anywhere outside of the US is an exercise in "Guess where the mech will be in 10 seconds!".

    IGP and Piranha Games are at this time trying to milk as much as possible from a complete TURD and blatantly so.

    Don't fall for this, I treat my founder's account as money spent to remember not to buy things blindly and on impulse. You Dear Reader can just download it and try for free, It will be a waste of Your valuable time however.

The weapons beautiful. combat system feels like every mech warrior game i have played except for mech warrior 4. The horrible downside is this game is pay to win. For all your mech warrior fans out there willing to spend easily 500+ dollars to get the mechs and weapons you desire this is the game for you. sadly i do love this game but I despise all pay to win aspects any game incorporates. aside from the fact they want to hook you up to an iv and suck the life force from you to get a good foot hold into the game. I do like almost everything else about the game. I have a few complaints about the time it takes to earn things. Even with premium time i have already dropped roughly 60$ in to this game and still have close to nothing. while i am fighting people with clan weaponry( that is pay for with real cash) i only have basic weaponry and i am being destroyed this game is slowly losing my interest because i don't have 1000 dollars to drop into a game just to be remotely competitive.     worse still is the pricing you'll be paying full retail price games for the least amount of content and by virtue of the games multiple perk additions to your character you have to buy stuff to upgrade or you'll be using trials for so long and sand in your face for so long you'll hate the game. there's little tutorials to some controls but tactics, swim with the sharks and pay 2 winners in mechs vastly superior to what you can have for the first 50 matches. not a good F2P system at all.

You can kill a Mech pretty easily if you take out the right part, but a good pilot can mitigate this. Also proper use of your team is essential, something too many other games fail to do. You can do very well as a single player, but you can only carry your team so far. I have never seen one mech win a match all by themselves, sure they may have done 1000 damage and got most of the kills, but without the team working with them, they would have never had the chance to do it.

    For a F2P game I would say it has a pretty good model. There are a few mechs that you have to spend real money to get, but for the most part they are just different not better, so you don't feel its pay to win. One exception to this is they roll the new Mechs out as first purchasable with real money then after a certain amount of time they become purchasable with in game currency. Some people will say it is grindy but the only thing you do to get money in game is play the game, no minigames or other gibberish so I can't really call it a grind. However, even though this is a skill based game, there are upgrades to your mech you have to earn through play, aside from the loadouts like weapons and engines. Getting your initial Mech setup can be a bit of a drag.

    Some negatives would be the lack of game modes (though they are adding more in the near future) The map selection is pretty weak, they often over correct while trying to balance aspects of the game, matchmaking is still a work in progress, and my biggest gripe is the lack of built in voice chat (again something they say they are working on)

    Overall if you like Mechs and FPS's you should check this out. Starting isn't easy, but work with your team and ask questions. Most people are very friendly, and happy to help you out. Finding a mech that works for you is important, as just getting the biggest Mech isn't going to guarantee you success (in fact I find the Assaults are much more difficult to pilot starting out)    … Expand

    The Positive:-
    Looks fairly good.
    Feels like stomping around in a heavy machine. The separate Torso/ legs control mechanism (like a tank) is a little complicated and takes a while to get used to but adds a lot when you get the hang of it.
    Armoured tactics work, focused fire, reverse slopes, co-ordinating spotting and 'artillery' etc.
    A good team based tactical game
    Essentially free to play (but you do need to spend a little money to get more mechbays in all probability if you intend to play it for any time).
    Good customisation mini-game, you can customise the mechs almost infinitely.

    20 years or so of back story going back to the FASA battletech tabletop game.

    Dedicated and fairly fanatical community.

    PGI the developer have been fairly good at communicating their intentions since January (but I understand this has not always been the case...)

    The Negative:-
    Can be a little unstable at times. (although this has got better since I have been playing it with many fix's..still a nasty ongoing desynch issue though that some suffer that needs to be be resolved.)

    Limited servers, all in Canada are not ideal for those with high pings to Canada.

    The strategic element has taken a very long time to arrive (called Community Warfare and its due as top priority by the end of this year.) and without it gameplay is pretty limited to 3 derivatives of 12 vs12 team death match's and collecting mechs. Its a 'grind'.

    Maps are pretty good but they are quite limited in number at this time.

    Beginners tutorials are extremely limited and you have to search around quite a bit to get beyond being more than a target.

    20 years or so of back story going back to the FASA tabletop game....appears to sometimes hamstring the developer.

    Constant sales and new mechs for money can be intrusive and some of the mechs are EXTREMELY expensive, you do not have to buy them of course, but its there..(this is a negative with all free 2 play games though and not one specific to MWO, f2p games unfortunately have to fund themselves in some way, they are businesses. )

And this is coming from a fan of Battletech/Mechwarrior series and someone that enjoys the core of the game.

    In this horrid metaphor sums up the history of this game. The cows of course being the fans of Battletech desperate for a modern take on Mechwarrior. When I say desperate, I mean desperate. After releasing the founders packs ($120/60/30), the phoenix packs ($80/60/40/20), and the clan packs ($240/$210/$180/$150/$120/$90/$60/$30) it is possible for a desperate cow to have dropped ~ $440 dollars just on these, without purchasing any of the monthly mech releases/other stuff. Meanwhile what have the developers given the players in the form of content since release:

    I do not consider new mechs/skins/etc. to be content. This does nothing to change the core of the game, nor do they do anything but give you new skins/builds/flavor of the month mechs to play.

    The clan packs were released in May 2014. Since then there have been a few dominant mechs at the top of the "meta", and they are all clan. This has made a pay to win situation that will not be relieved until the mechs are released to the general public for cbills. If you do not believe me, look at how cERLL's were nerfed at the same time that clan lights/mediums were released for cbills. They will do the same thing to the Heavies/Assaults when they are released.

    The core gameplay is pretty good. The 12v12 format is working, albeit I was a bigger fan of the 8v8. The mechs handle well, and aiming is easy for any FPS player. Tactics play a role in the game, and a good pilot usually does well. The matchmaker is horrible however, as it tries to make a "Winner" and a Loser" team for every match. They methods that it uses to accomplish this can be harsh, and will result in a random deathmatch generated for the players where you do not know if you are teamed with ringers or dead weight.

    The real test for the developer will be in the next few months, as the developers have been making content promises without proposing any new mech pack cash grabs. If they can deliver on new content, make it successful, and not rely on another quick fix cash injection during the next year the gameplay may improve and the game may have a future. Unfortunately this is like betting on an addict giving up his junk, as I believe the publisher and developer have become so dependent on the packs that they will not be able to help themselves to announce another one by January 2015.

    Pro: Good core gameplay to build off of. Tactical gameplay and customization of mechs.
    Con: Developer/Publisher releases very little content, mech balance is always out of whack, a lot of money for basically "My little mech" online.    … Expand

    The most pathetic part of this game is the money grubbing. This isn't just incompetence of "not" knowing how to do... well... anything properly, it's shameless greed. Originally promised with no hero mechs/variants, no consumables, they did exactly that as soon as Founders refund period ended, basically saying "shove it" to everyone that supported them. They then made the cash shop their # 1 priority, filling it out every month with stuff to sell while features the game actually needs continue to go long over due. The stuff they did waste their time on was stuff no one wanted, like 3PV. They'd waste half a year of Dev time for 3PV. Ya, thanks, that worthless feature that shouldn't be in the game that no one wanted nor supported at any point. You wasted all that time just to shove it down everyone's throat. They didn't even deliver it with the option to queue without it as promised. They went back on a big promise by putting in something they originally promised they'd NEVER do, made a new one to do it a certain way, then didn't even bother to deliver on that one either. It also took them well over a YEAR just to put in a no-base TDM. That should have been a day 1 release mode. All that time just to copy/paste a previous mode and take the bases out. That's the level of talent we're talking about here.

    "Community Warfare" is slowly becoming just an obvious pipedream. It's like being on a ship and the captain promises you that he knows where he's going and will soon hit land. Surprise, there's no land coming. It's just an inevitable sinking ship. Instead of deliver on promised features, they just make more Mech packages to milk this dying cow for all its worth before it sinks. They now offer 500$ Mech skins. Not even League of Legends did this when they made that ridiculous Ezreal skin. Blizzard doesn't even charge this much for mounts or pets. How much is the newest Blizzard title with all DLCs/optional paid content? Not 500$. You could build a gaming computer with that. The only "Community Warfare" for this game was on the forums, where everyone voiced their complaints to the betrayals, but was met only with deaf ears or ban hammers. During the Founder period, PGI pretended to give a crap about its community and its feedback, but as soon as the refund period ended, they stopped acting, and very obviously so. Well, unfortunately for them, they can't censor Metacritic.

    Please do not support this game. I'm honestly asking you because I'm a true MechWarrior fan, and this game is just one big slap in the face to us. It's an insult and abuse of the license. Worse yet is that for as long as it remains active; the longer we'll have to wait to get a true MechWarrior game again. If you support this game, you're hurting the franchise and every real fan of the series. Please let the game go bust, the sooner the better, so that the long wait for the next MechWarrior game won't be as long. PGI is a terrible company that I can only hope gets shutdown as they deserve. They belong at a Mcdonalds flipping burgers, not trying to make video games. They flat out scammed everyone and continue to try to leech as much as they can from this license's rotting corpse. This was not the revival anyone was hoping for, not even close. The license was better off in retirement. I'd rather it remain dormant and continue waiting for the next game than have a parasite dig it up just to feed on it like a vulture while ripping everyone off in the progress.

For me this means this is a payed game masquerading as a F2P game.
    - Gameplay is not fast: This is a bit personal but i like a slightly faster paced game than this. This is by all means not a fast game. Sometimes it takes minutes to take down a single enemy. I prefer fast excillerating duels wich rely on adrenalin fueled reflexes, i don't get that in this game.    … Expand

    It seems like they are trying to get as much dollars out of the game, instead of making it great.

    Allow me to preface this by saying that I adore the Mechwarrior/Battletech series, besides the very first two Need For Speeds, Mechwarrior was the very first game I ever played, and I have loved every other installment in the series, even the flawed MechAssaults. This though... this makes me want to cry. The core mechanics are perfectly serviceable. The mechs move and feel appropriately clunky and tough, though I do think some of the light mechs should jiggle around more. The jump jets feel about right. The heat management is exactly what should be expected and works perfectly. The autocannons are different from the styles of the old games but in my opinion feel much more appropriate to the type of combat that Mechwarrior is based on. The lasers are weird but not unreasonable, much like Mechwarrior 3's variants actually. The missiles are exactly what they needed to be. The PPC's (the big dogs of the laser family, for those not in the know) need a little more punch for the amount of heat they cause, in fact you never see them used for the most part, but they're not bad feeling, just need balancing. The gauss rifles are awkward to use, but rewarding. I think there's only two or three mechs in the entire garage that I would call useless, most of them have some sort of place for certain playstyles. Heck, this game made light mechs actually usable finally! That NEEDS to be worth some kind of medal. The damage system is nice and accurate, the hud is pretty decent though I think that some of the indicators need tweaks. The hangar hud is a bit clunky and crowded, but not unusable, a bit like how some websites need to lay off the side bars. The radar system is great and is pretty much World of Tanks' system without the invisible-tank nonsense. And to top it all off, even the customization system is very much something that translated straight from the old Battletech games, and in a good way.

    So why is the score so low?

    Well, while the mechanics are fine, they've been slapped onto a multiplayer system that is ten kinds of awful. First, the maps. The maps are downright dreadful. Most of them are urban maps, and to be very blunt, mechs aren't great for urban fighting, they specialize in mountains and small facilities--hell one of the best maps is one with high temperatures which make your mech overheat easier... and that's something that I should be raging about. And most of the non-urban maps have mountains too steep to climb, another big no-no for the mech series; you should have a few unscale-able mountains, but most should be just steep enough to be dangerously slow to assault mechs, but perfectly usable for scouts. Actually, a lot of the maps are kind of small to begin with, especially the already claustrophobic urban maps. On top of that, in the old games you were able to change your load-out depending on the map. Why? Because if it's cold or snowing you can go crazy with whatever you feel like, but if you're in deserts you should drop the heat-happy lasers and maybe even put heavier reactive armor on to repulse more common bullets. But here? Nnnooope. You're stuck with what you've got... which may be part of the reason for the heat-happy PPC's not being used now that I think about it.

    The monetizing is aggressively tight-fisted, worse than World of Tanks in a lot of ways actually. I don't mind monetizing custom gear or quick ways to get mechs, but make it so that in-game credits are actually viable, not something where you need to fight a hundred battles in one of the stock rentals just to get a scout mech. Actually, the 'rental' mech idea is pretty neat as a concept, but with the credits being so useless, it becomes taunting.

    And then there's the matchmaking. Sweet Jesus. In World of Tanks, the idea is that usually there's about the same number of tanks from certain tiers, or it's supposed to be balanced. Doesn't work, but whatever. Well not MWO. Here it's possible to have nothing but assault and heavy mechs on one side, and maybe two assault mechs and a support Catapult with a swarm of mediums and scouts on the other. It makes the game almost unplayably unfair.

    Also, why in Heaven's name can't I set my weapon groups in the hangar? It's annoying to be stuck with a new or modified mech at the beginning of a match and just sitting there regrouping everything.

    Beyond that, the graphics are CryEngine standard: good but hard on the computer. The animations are great, especially the start-up stuff. And there's some nice visual modifications to be had if you want to shell the money out.

    There is a wonderful mech game somewhere in here just begging to get out, but somehow it got buried under tedium, money grabbing, and horrid maps. Someone save Mechwarrior! Because these guys sure won't from the looks of things.    … Expand

Many other features have seemingly fallen by the wayside as well. Currently, you can expect no in-game VoIP, no lobbies, no training, and no community warfare. It's just drop, shoot, rinse and repeat on a woefully small collection of maps. And it gets old fast.

    The game is F2P. However, if you do choose to spend, BEWARE. The game is ferociously overpriced for what it delivers if you buy into the packages. The latest Clan packs cost up to $500, or $55 for a single mech of your choosing. That's the price of a new AAA title for ONE mech, which you can only use in the same limited game and does little to change the core experience. Many fans have also been alienated by the fact that the developers have repeatedly failed to deliver on previous design promises and deadlines.

    Compared to today's in store retail titles, this entire game could never sell for more than £15 ($25). Unfortunately, the developers have clearly made the decision to focus on new "sellable" content, rather than content that would add to the overall game. Spending £15 on some new camo, or a couple of the unique "hero" mechs, is justifiable - but on no account spend more; there is simply no deeper game here to warrant it.

    The core of MWO is good fun, and it's sad that the developers have not built on this solid foundation to produce the compelling Mechwarrior game fans have been hoping for since Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries hit the shelves. A focus on making money, rather than a love of the franchise, seems to be at the crux of this. MWO pulls off the remarkable feat of being both completely free to play and horrendously overpriced at the same time.

A support ticket submitted nearly a week ago has gone completely unanswered, as well as posts regarding the exact same issues that date back as far as december of 2012.

    The game itself is a money-sink that requires players to purchase P2W mechs that offer unfair advantages to anyone willing to pay for them, and furthermore those that dont are left as little more than target practice unless you are able to gang up on the extremely overpowered purchasable "Clan" mechs.

    With all due respect to a series that has been dear to my heart since a very young age Im ashamed to say that this should be skipped by anyone with a heartbeat and an IQ above their shoe size because it works for maybe a week, and then the connection issues start, thus making any purchases a total waste of money given that the game itself cant even be played unless you enjoy the following:

    I will join a game and enter the lobby, but I am stuck looking at the roster while (in some cases) my mech boots up, or sometimes there are pauses and then the cockpit loads in the background all while the roster stays in view. I can hear fragments of sounds and my allies seem to teleport along their path instead of walking, and sometimes they do nothing but walk in place. In these instances I either cannot move at all, or I rubberband all over the place feebly attempting to steer my mech to a safe location in hopes that it clears up, or (in the case of place-walking allies) Im free to move and shoot, but all other players in game place-walk.

    Something strange about this brand of lag is that it seems to stop for 3-5 seconds every time I alt-tab, but it almost immediately returns after tabbing back.

    Ive checked MSE/Window's Firewall, and no settings have been altered whatsoever so I am at a loss to explain why I am all of a sudden having this problem after never having a single issues with my connection with ANY other game I play.

    In short:

    Dont waste your time downloading this game, and if you do download it, then you should definitely reconsider ANY AND ALL purchases as most decent mechs can cost you 60$ a piece in some cases.

And making money by hawking hellishly expensive game packs of "gold mechs" and such. Don't get me wrong, now. I still play relatively often. The game play, such as it is, is OK. It's comparable to Tanks, or Planes, or one of the other "F2P" games out there. It has nothing to recommend it over the others, though. "Very Disappointing" would probably describe it best.… Expand

    This thing hasn't delivered at all. A bug example is community warfare, we might get that by 2015 MAYBE. Most of the core game elements are okay. The QA team is either non existent or lacking. They push out these patches and basically let the community test it for them. If you can stomach everything outside of the core game (walking around in a mech), you'll be fine. However, that was relatively short lived. After playing the same few maps a hundred times, the gameplay got fairly stale, not to mention a whole two game modes, neither of which made any logical sense to what should be somewhat simulative of actual 'Mech combat. I earned my way into developing the light 'Mechs I had, and focused my time creating a fun mini-brawler and min-maxing my own designs (I take after my Dad in that aspect [he played all the way back to the original sims maaaany years ago]).

    Now, those few months were extremely fun. But the primary wall came after PGI asked for money for so called "gold" 'Mechs and the clan series. Hundreds of dollars, and for what? A major reward of (pardon me) a big-ass target in flipping gold plate. This was after many failed promises and redactments and forum post removals to cover their asses.

    To top it off, the most heavily released content were things you had to pay real money for. Not maps, not equipment, not bug fixes, not patches, not playable content: either aesthetics or pay-to-win 'Mechs.

    So here's my actual breakdown.

    Graphics: 8/10
    Not sure about other lows scores here, but I was happy with what I played with. Never been one to nitpick on graphics but even so, I was satisfied.

    Gameplay: 5/10
    Fun for the first hundred matches, but after that, it's redundant. There's not even decent randomization of, say, drop points. You start in the exact same place over and over and over again, never having to adapt to any surprises since it's all the same every time every map. Players are the only unknown variable, and the only reason the gameplay is a 5 as it is.

    Sound: 8/10
    Nothing wrong here.

    GUI: 8/10
    There *are* no major issues with it. I had no trouble adapting to it and it's fairly straightforward.

    Everything else: 2/10
    I have been extremely dissatisfied with the developers. They have done little to warrant the consistent cash-grabs and make me actually want to help their development. They continuously fall through on promises and bend towards creating the game accessible, and not good.

    Overall: 4/10
    The initial gameplay is pleasing, but when you realize that you cannot get anywhere without spending money, and that that money will be primarily placed towards creating more paid-only content, it quickly becomes repetitive and uninteresting.    … Expand

As time has gone by, the devs have shown themselves to be far more dedicated to pushing new items for the cash grab than to developing actual content. Features that were promised to be implemented more than a year ago have yet to be implemented or if they have been, are often partially if not entirely locked behind a pay wall, features that come standard in almost every other F2P shooter.

    Here is a specific example of the types of shady actions PGI is prone to. Some time ago (end of last summer, perhaps) they decreased the rate at which you earn the in game currency (C-Bills) to the point that it takes a solid week of grinding matches several hours a night to afford one new mech, and another few days on top to customize it. Not only this, but to master a pilot tree for the mech (which is a crucial edge in game, providing huge benefits), you must own and play with at least three variants. This means it takes a good month of grinding to unlock ONE chassis so you can be on par with those who have been playing for longer. Add on to this that there is little to no training so I have routinely seen new players get absolutely stomped by veterans, making it that much more miserable to slog through. But wait! There IS hope! You can just pay them lots of money and unlock it now! The above is a great example or why it really seems to me that the current model is to frustrate new players into spending money before they realize that the game simply isn't worth it.

    I joined a Clan and became part of an active community centered on MWO last May. Since then, I have seen the player base steadily decline as PGI constantly pushes more items for purchase while doing very little to improve the state of the game. In addition, they are absolutely horrible at listening to player feedback - they are the absolute worst for censoring or flat out deleting posts that openly criticize aspects of the game on the official forums. There are some communities hanging on and you will find players who scoff at the discontent, but frequently, they aren't the ones who paid hundreds in to this game to watch it flop.

    Long story short, I paid more than $200 into this game, supporting it over the past two years and for my time and money, I have a bushel full of broken promises and gameplay that becomes more infuriating with every new patch, as the devs seemingly mess with things at random, flat out deny existing problems, pay wall basic features, or heaven only knows what. I gave up trying to see their reasoning several months ago. If you're still really wanting to play, do your research first, please. Look up the other gripes (and oh are there many) and go in with your eyes open.    … Expand

    The game suffers from frequent crashing (on many different platforms) and the inability to rejoin a match after disconnecting or crashing is incredibly frustrating.

    The pay model is outrageous and the grind to do anything is equally outrageous. Initially, you will unlock large amounts of in game cash (C-Bills) via Achievements, which gives a false sense of what your income looks like and new players frequently purchase a new Mech thinking their income will be steady.

    There are only two game modes, deathmatch and deathmatch. The other game mode, where you capture points, almost never comes into play until late game. Deathmatches frequently end with light Mechs hidding and waiting the timer out.

    Lastly, there is no real sense of progress other than grinding through all the various Mechs and variants.

    Definitely a pay to win game, with purchased "hero" mechs being far superior than their free brethren. Overall, a game or two brings a half hour of fun but any more than that is just a grind. If the game had more depth, I would consider purchasing mechs, equipment and accessories but I see no point with the game's current state.

    its unbelieveable how boring this game is.if youre interested in doing the same 2 modes again and again go with MWO. if you have a minimum of aspiration in a pc game, save yourself the traffic of several GB for that game.

With full potential, I started plaything MWO at beta, then slowly went to open beta. The game play got worse becoming over burden with rules and strange mathematical equations to find the best way to blow someone up. Unfortunately, every time you got settled in and started winning they would throw another wrench in the game. Now if you have an extremely highly performance graphics card you will enjoy playing this game with some of the highest frame rates known to the gaming industry. As a professional programmer, I can tell you that this game is not optimally programmed and they obviously have no clue how to interact with the game engine. I think you can find better displays of physics on Mario for Nintendo and better hit detection from mortal combat on Sega Genesis.     What keeps the game from getting a good rating is their approach. Which speaks more of the developer PGI than the title itself. The staff is quite amateur with balance changes swinging wildly from one spectrum to the other instead of incremental changes. The SEVERE lack of content such as maps, community warfare, private matches, lobbies, persistence, and such are still lacking with the ubiquitous "Coming Soon" that we've had for over 2 years now.

    Instead the developer is more concerned with pumping our "booster packs" of terrible mechs to avoid the "P2W" tag, and making a patch overpower a certain weapon then put a hero mech on that abuses the broken weapon so people will buy up only to nerf it into the ground in the next patch.

    The lead for this game has crutched it with cheap gimmicks and lawyering. If this unique game had a true competitor we'd see more true content. But until then, Russ Bullock and crew will make this another title to add to his long list of "minimally viable" games.    … Expand

On top of that, I have played every single mechwarrior PC game since I was young 20 years ago and I must say this one is the most realistic of all... extremely heavy feel, nice real cockpit and immersion along with weapons that really feel heavy and impactful. All in all, this is one game that I will continue to pay real money for my fav mechs for years to come.… Expand

    This is an 8/10 for a Free to Play shooter that hasn't delivered on all of it's promises yet. However, it is still a very fun Mech-sim-shooter and although the new player experience is woefully inadequate, once you get into the game it is a LOT of fun.

Third, this game was designed using a game engine that does not play towards the strengths of Mechwarrior (I'm currently using Cryengine 3 in my current dev teams work, so I do understand some of the strengths it plays towards). Now on to my review.

    Graphics: 8/10
    If there is one thing that Cryengine does well, its graphics. While not entirely optimized for mid to lower level PC's, this game plays with a decent framerate. The maps are definitely designed to look the part, and from afar this game looks pretty good. The animations for the mechs and the mech models themselves actually look really good and grabbed my attention. All in all, the game LOOKS good.

    I'm not going to give a rating for sounds and music mostly because there is not too much to go off of. What music does play, especially at the beginning of a round, really gets you pumped, but primarily sound is not really utilized in this game (unlike the single-player predecessors).

    Gameplay: 6/10
    The scheme of gameplay has a HUGE amount of great concepts. The weapons systems are done well and for the most part follow that of its predecessor. Weapon grouping is heavily utilized and done well (groups can even be changed in game on the fly) and does not detract from gameplay at all. Heating is done well, as was mech cooling, shutdown and system overrides. Aiming, firing, and basic weapons usage are where the game detracts a bit from its good concepts. This game caters towards the SKILLED PLAYER, or at least attempts to make you into one. For most players, these fire systems will be difficult to use as you must utilize an independently moving torso AS WELL AS independent arms (if you disable the lock in the menu). The current scheme is difficult to use with mouse and keyboard, and it can frustrate a large number of players because of the difficulty of using weapons. Mouse acceleration (at least in my experience) cannot be disabled in-game and has detracted somewhat from my gameplay. It is hard to describe entirely what makes this fire scheme so frustrating at times, but, for lack of any better descriptions, I would best describe it as "clunky" and "unpolished"

    Game Modes: 6/10
    Honestly, the game modes are done well, but there is not a lot making them different from other games. Quite average to say the least. One thing that threw a lot of players away from this game was the lack of a single player campaign, which, while certainly understandable, is what made a lot of Mechwarrior games shine. As for the multiplayer, they do a FANTASTIC job at forcing the players to work together. Lone wolves do not last long in this game, but the system is still unpolished. They enable VOIP, but the multiplayer system feels like it could be expanded upon. While it would be understandably difficult to do, I feel that the devs could learn a thing or two from Planetside 2 and how they forced cooperation. Unfortunately, they are designed with totally different game schemes, but nonetheless there are some aspects that could be learned.

    Miscellaneous (UI, Server reliability, etc): 5/10
    The first UI was crap. No other way of describing it. The second UI improved on the first, but also lost some of its better features (crap 2.0). While it is progress, it is still severely unpolished. You had no idea what the reliability of a server was going into it, and the game does not seem to entice players to continue working together after a single game. The number of purchases required to avoid grinding is annoying at times, but understandable. It would have been better for a cheaper premium (i.e. $5 monthly), but even better for a one time purchase up front. The premiums have an ENORMOUS advantage over the average players, and even more so if they are skilled, but that does not mean the average player isn't catered to. For both premium and normal players, the Mech lab is done incredibly well and realistically; it really makes the game feel like a Mechwarrior game. So yes, it has its ups and downs, but I feel that if this game were designed and tested in an alternate or more traditional fashion, that it probably would've done well.

    Overall: 6/10
    This is not a bad game. It just wasn't paid enough attention, both by the market and the devs. It could have been something good, but it still feels too much like a fan-made ripoff. I would still recommend taking a look. I think something good can be taken from this game.    … Expand

    Once the game finally delivers on its promises, it might not be so bad. As it stands, it is competent and playable, but not a great choice in comparison to other free to play games out right now. At least it IS free to play.    … Expand

    As a Mechwarrior title, I expected this to be that game we have been waiting for. That game that would put the latest AAA titles to shame. As a free to play game, I didn't expect much. The sad truth is that I had gotten what I expected. Not much.

    The game is unique as its own. For a free to play title as well, it stands out among many other titles. It's refreshing to the genre, in which I am very glad to see. The downside is how the game itself is executed. It's a basic Mechwarrior game. You have Mechs (that are based on the Battletech universe) kill each other in a mindless game mode, get money, the end. Fin. That's how the core game is. There are 3 games modes as of now, there were only 2 at launch. The launch was quite a shame to be. The 3 game modes are Assault, Conquest, and Skirmish. In assault, you kill the enemy team or capture their base, in Conquest, you kill the enemy team, or get 750 resources (in reality, there are just more bases), in skirmish, there are no bases; and that is all. The game modes aren't unique at all, and they can become very boring and repetitive at times.

    The gameplay is quite good, as said before, it's refreshing to the free to play category. Mech customization is nice but sometimes feels too restrictive. It's semi-tactical, not as I expected it to be (I wanted it to be as tactical and strategic as the Arma series but got a basic game instead). You have 4 different classes: Light, Medium, Heavy, and Assault. They have their different roles, but it almost feels like the current game always encourages one type of style. High Alpha, pin-point damage, LRMs or something else. A lot of the times you will find the same type of builds in almost every single match. No one has the creativity or skill to come up with their own unique and effective build. It seems as if there is only one build that works. Another gripe are modules. These act as perks and killstreak rewards from the modern Call of Duty franchise. You push a button to call in airstrike, you have your passive ability that scans for things. The game would feel much more balanced if these were removed so no one can have a benefit.

    The graphics are really nice, as they run off the Cryengine 3, however. The game has pretty bad performance issues. White Knights cannot run to their only reason for it being "beta" anymore. The only aspect that actually made the game "Beta" was the beta logo. That was literally the only thing making it beta. There are a lot of missing content from the game. Such as Community Warfare, which was planned long ago and was said that it was being developed when it actually wasn't. That is the biggest complaint of mine about the current game. The massive lack of any features.

    Matchmaking seems to be almost ruined. I am a PUG, yes a PUG which is for some reason ridiculed on the forums and is a reason why I don't want to talk to most people on them. As for the matches, most of them now feel like steam rolls. By steam rolls I mean, your team either wins fast and the enemy gets 4 kills or less; or you lose and your team gets 4 kills or less. They are never fun, they weren't like this before, I'm not sure how matches suddenly got like this.

    What bothers me the absolute most is that there is no progression system. The game can feel like a huge grind at times since your only real incentive is money (C-Bills). Apparently C-Bills were inflated before as PGI has actually decreased the income of everyone drastically. *A Warning For New Players* be careful not to spend any money for a while. The game does not encourage experimentation, it actually punishes you, so keep that in mind and spend your C-Bills wisely. Other than money, there are mech skills, which are more of a grind since they require a large amount of C-Bills to use on mechs. It feels like you're getting no where. You can have 100 Billion C-bills, and if you try to explore a variety of options, you will end up broke. It ends up becoming a huge turn off for new players who can be potential customers.

    There are a lack of basic features that make any game all the better such as in game voice chat, a real clan system, and a nice variety of maps and game modes. When basic features are added, I wish that PGI would consider community work for the game, it's always a good thing. The game is also very expensive, as they have $500, golden mechs that are somehow limited in quantity even though they are digital. I understand that it's free to play and that you don't have to buy anything. If they would lower the prices, they would sell more and make more money, a win win for everyone. As a F2P game, anyone can play, no one is obligated to pay, it was the devs choice for making the title F2P.

    It's definitely not the Mechwarrior game we have all been waiting for but it is a good free to play title worth checking out, just not good as a Mechwarrior title itself. Still worth checking out though.    … Expand

    too top that PGI is now full of themselves and disrespects the true fans of the mechwarrior game and name too make it one big farce too end all farces.

    they have slaped me a core mechwarrior fan and founders supporter in the face too the point i wont give them anymore money.

    they have a huge grind for you too get over and if you want too buy any MC (mechwarrior credits) you will find your paying out of your ass for such a mind numbing game.

    this game mocks and destorys the name MECHWARRIOR and makes me want too cry my self too sleep for how bad they this game up and if they didnt do everything wrong like every outher mechwarrior witch they said they try too never do like 3PV and flush OMG that 1st post for flush module almost made me punch my screen like ****?!>!>!?

But it is their loss and my gain, I had already put hundreds of dollars into this game, and I was considering spending more on the Clan Mechs.     MechWarrior Online does a pretty good job in balancing out the gameplay and gives you lots of BattleMechs, weapons and items to buy, but it's got only two game modes and it's definitely not that fun.
