    Many hours of fast-paced action and great story. Unique noir movie-like setting and heart-touching events. Comic-screens are awesome and just better than videos in other games. A masterpiece.

    This game is the best solo game, HL is a multi player game idiot, Max Payne is much better single player. Considering Max Payne isnt Multi if it was it would kick a$$!

    One of the all-time greats in PC gaming. While many of the features of the Max Payne engine are standard fare today, they were revolutionary at its release. A great story, solid AI, Bullet Time and a cinematic playing environment still make this game an experience not to be missed.

    How much I love this game, it's fun, addicting, and still to this day it never gets old, no matter how many times I've played it, never gets boring. The best game I've ever played and I really hope they somehow pull a new sequel off as good as this one. Max Payne 2 on the other hand wasn't as good. This game is long, I tried speedrushing it once and took me around 12/15 hours in total soHow much I love this game, it's fun, addicting, and still to this day it never gets old, no matter how many times I've played it, never gets boring.     A true masterpiece. Atmospheric (one of the best adaptations of the Unreal Engine), great development team, and challenging game play. The only downside I see with it is the excessive save times (up to four seconds for a quick save even on modern systems) when this is an otherwise fast paced game.

It cost less than £2 on Steam and I've been playing it every night for the last two weeks. This is possibly the best third person shooter of all time, and one of my new favourite games ever.     Max Payne is one of the greatest examples of a developer taking a video game seriously, and that they, too, can be a form of art. With it's amazing writing, top-notch voice acting, and one of the best combat systems in a PC game at the time, it's easy to see why Max Payne was such a hit.

    I won't say much about a game this old, but I can't help but write a small review on this. This is one of the best shooter games ever, with awesome bullet time mechanics (which were new at the time), great voice acting and a spectacular noir story. If you haven't played it, you've missed a LOT.

If you are attempting to play the game first time, you may find graphics of the game somewhat hilarious (specially relative the nowadays's graphical standards) at first. But after few minutes, you will be so soaked up in the game that you hardly want to stop playing. I come back to this game once every 6 months because I'll be home on a rainy day and the pitter patter of droplets on the window reminds me of Max Payne running through aA PC staple and perhaps the swan song of shooters.     Max Payne has enormous "margin of safety" even nasty management can not spoil this excellent game. Russian is available on the iOS version with an all pereozvuchennymi dialogues and comics. It is worse than the original, but for the owners of smartphones do not speak English this is the ideal opportunity to see the classic games. Moreover, that in May, is a long-awaited blockbuster Max Payne 3.

    To this day no game has gripped me like "Max Payne". I remember I got this one Friday afternoon and had it beat by Sunday morning. Yes I did spend most waking hours playing it, but that is a testament to the game's story. I rarely find myself addicted to a game's story. I rarely find myself wanting to know where the story goes. In games, plot does take a backseat to game play for me. ButTo this day no game has gripped me like "Max Payne". I remember I got this one Friday afternoon and had it beat by Sunday morning. Yes I did spend most waking hours playing it, but that is a testament to the game's story. I rarely find myself addicted to a game's story. I rarely find myself wanting to know where the story goes. In games, plot does take a backseat to game play for me. But "Max Payne" got it right. It's short enough not to lose focus from beginning to end, but long enough to become a deep and immersive experience. The game's pacing is flawless. The style by which the story is told graphic comic strip narrated by the hard-boiled Payne is also perfect and adds much to the game's style an atmosphere.

    The much-hyped slow motion aspect of the game is simply the icing on the cake. There is nothing like jumping into a room gun in each hand in slow motion and re-enacting your favourite John Woo action scene. Nothing. It is true that the A.I. isn't the small tool in the box, but what lack in brains they make up for in numbers. The vast selection of weapons is also impressive, though I have myself found myself going through the entire game using only handguns except when other guns are essential to the objective. But that's just the Woo fan in me.

    The graphics were jaw-dropping at the time and are still damn impressive today. There was times when I was simply amazed at the details: if you got the camera right behind Max's shoulder you could see the micro-fabrics of his jacket and the singular strands of his hair. Bullet hits were also impressive both visually and in their restraint. They remind me a lot of Exley's shotgun massacre in "L.A. Confidential". Debris flies over the place but not in an over-the-top Woo or "Matrix" way. This helps retain the gritty realism the makers were striving for.

    "Max Payne" is derivate of a lot of works and is quite clichéd, but it is executed with style, atmosphere and an immense level of game-making professionalism that makes it an experience unlike any other. Put film noir, John Woo and "The Matrix" into mixer and "Max Payne" is probably what you get. And it's one hell of a The game is thrilling, visceral and explosive. What more could you want in an action game?

    And... I will never those first scenes and the Metro first level... Whenever I take the subway, I think of Max Payne Wow Some scars left...    … Expand

    Graphics are overrated, it's all about the story and gameplay.
    Max Payne 1 is a prime example that companies with very limited budget make the best games.

    For me this is the most memorable game I've played for the reason of having a most memorable character and gameplay. One can relate to the protagonist throughout the game no matter which situation he finds himself in.     One of the greatest, most well written stories/dialogue/monologue in gaming history.
    It may not have aged very well, but at the time, this game was big, looked great and was innovative. The character of Max Payne, in this game is unparalleled by any other. The graphic novel bits are just genius.

    "Fear That Gives Men Wings". Dark, touching and fantastic story. Gameplay was incredible for 2001. Still getting goose bumps. This game is immortal. At least in my memory =)

    This was definitely revolutionary when it came out, having invented the whole bullet time mechanics that was later used in dozens of games. Its the best game in the series and unfortunately the best game Remedy ever did.

    The most addictive, story driven, third person shooter I have ever played. I bought this for xbox, pc, and most recently iphone. I have given Rockstar money for this one game three times; It's just that good.

This    Max Payne, to me is a timeless classic. A bold tale of a bold cop in a do or die situation.

    Max Payne takes place in none other than New York's Hell's Kitchen where a cime syndicate has invaded your home and killed both your wife and young daughter leaving Max on a very bloody and dangerous game of intel collecting, he needs to figure out why his family was murdered in cold blood. This game will take Max on a very painful journey to the truth through hotels, restaurants, snowstorms and building tops..
    The gameplay style is one of lots of dodging and shooting, while it may get repetitive I did not have any complaints as the game is not terribly long. In the levels there are many hilarious things to see and hear such as TV shows, conversations or even comic strips.
    Some PCs will have trouble with this old gem but everything is fixable so please do not give up and just look for a solution, there are many!

    an certified classic , I mean every game with Bullet Time has this in they DNA, A game where you have to quick save every few step because it is f****** crazy difficult and I love it, I almost can't describe how fun it is to nail every bastard in this game , The story is so many cliffy's roll and each other that it works you can really feel the 90 start of 2000 in this one

    Even though this game has great sentimental value for me, there's nothing I can say against it. Obviously the graphics are not going to be great because the game is 16 years old, but other aspects make up for it. But the greatest thing about this game is the story, I'm not going to spoil anything, I'm just going to say that it's really interesting, detailed and long. They show the story through comic-like cutscenes which are well made. And another great thing is the voice acting. Max still has, for me, the single greatest voice in all of gaming.

    One of the best video games ever made, perfect blend of the third person shooter, action movie and noir. Max Payne was absolutely revolutionary for its time, it took a lot of risks and every one of them payed off (bad pun intended).

    Fantastic game. The story is fantastic, the graphics are very good for the time. The 80's thriller movie atmosphere is amazing, Max's poetic comments makes everything even more perfect. The combat is fun and the voice acting is top notch.

It marks the beginning of an incredible journey for Remedy (well, their first game was Death Rally, also good in its own way) but, looking back at this game now, where it "all began", I can see the seeds being planted, the ideas, the intention to do a lot more with the franchise, and with everything.

    Without Max Payne, we wouldn't have Alan Wake, or Quantum Break, or Control, and we wouldn't be waiting in anticipation for Alan Wake II.

    Now that the Remake for this game, and the sequel, have been officially announced, I can't wait to see those two games merged into one and running on the amazing Northlight Engine.

    These days, in order to play Max Payne on modern PCs, we need some fixes but, fortunately, they're easy to get and they work amazingly well, still a perfectly playable experience from beginning to end, despite the game having some issues when FPS are uncapped; on my most recent playthrough, I had no issues at 120 FPS running on a 240 Hz screen, though, but YMMV so, if you see any issues, best to cap those frame-rates at 60.    … Expand

    Incredibly strong and enveloping atmosphere, interesting and intriguing story. Interesting mechanics of focus, and comic-storytelling style with noir music ...it was very-very cool.

    This game is industry defining.

    The game play, the story and the delivery of said story are all amazing. I recently completed it on steam and still enjoyed every second of it despite the dated visuals. It is a must play for anyone that calls themselves a gamer. Living history lesson in how to develop an amazing game.

    Сюжет не замысловатый, но на то время когда было принято сравнивать его в играх с аналогичным в порнухе, очень хороший! Месть, убийство семьи и друга на глазах у протагониста, предательство близких, безнадежность холодного Нью Йорка! Жуть!
    А какая же в игре была музыка! Композиция из меню игры запала мне в душу на всю жизнь, даже не знаю с чем сравнить, может только с саундтреком финальных титров первого "Терминатора", не знаю!
    Но самое главное, что объединяло всю эту прелесть, густейшая, не отпускающая атмосфера!!! Да в этой, именно в этой, игре одна из лучших игровых атмосфер в истории игростроя, ну лично для меня. Поэтому меня сильно расстроило отсутствие такой же атмосферы в Max Payne 2, а тем паче в Max Payne 3!
    Игра не отпускала и пройдя её один раз, я сразу же запустил её повторно! Такое было у меня только с Deus Ex: Human Revolution! И это высшая оценка для игры без прокачек, кастомизаций и с, в принципе, линейным геймлеем.
    Жду, очень жду, ремастера или переиздания. Вышедшее не так давно "HD издание для современных платформ", не что иное как издевательство над гениальной игрой и молодыми игроками. Сейчас смотреть на это невозможно и не надо!
    Как не крути, а эта игра одна из лучших игр вообще когда-либо вышедших за всю историю! И хотя права на франшизу сейчас принадлежат Rockstar, могли бы как нибудь студии договориться и выпустить ремейк на уровне Resident Evil 2 Remake! Я думаю все были бы только счастливы!    … Expand

Bullet-time ability is well implemented. - Intuitive shootdodge mechanics. There is this one part where you have no ammo, and enemies are right around the corner.
