    Closely echoing the scifi genre of the 1970s. Mass Effect gives you a view into another world full of galactic civilizations such as the Asari, Turians, Salarian, Krogans, Quarians, Elcor, Bolus, and of course the Humans. All with well written back stories and cultures. Although ME takes many of it's ideas from other Scifi stories, it successfully creates it's own unique world, story,Closely echoing the scifi genre of the 1970s. Mass Effect gives you a view into another world full of galactic civilizations such as the Asari, Turians, Salarian, Krogans, Quarians, Elcor, Bolus, and of course the Humans. All with well written back stories and cultures. Although ME takes many of it's ideas from other Scifi stories, it successfully creates it's own unique world, story, and characters. You see through the eye of Commander Shepard, a character and main protagonist with an already established reputation and backstory. As Commander Shepard, you experience the world of Mass Effect both in the story and interactions with characters. The characters are so fleshed out with their facial expressions, emotions, their own unique personalities, and backstories that they will not only bond with Shepard, but they will bond with the player as well. Top that with a good story and a plot twist, Mass Effect will not only immerse the player into the game's story, but it undoubtedly creates a life-like and believable world that's bigger than the game itself. The only drawbacks to an almost perfect game is in it's bugs, glitchy graphics, and combat system. However, the characters, story, and, world outshine Mass Effect's set backs and contribute to it's greatness! 9/10… Expand

    The gameplay mechanics are clunky as hell compared to later games, BUT when it comes to the story, atmosphere, soundtrack, mystery, it's easily the best of the trilogy.

    Quiza en estos tiempos el juego se sienta algo viejo, un poco lento y mecanicas algo pasadas, pero lo que lo hace grande es la gran historia, el comienzo de la trilogía ME, lleno de emociones y grandes momentos, sencillamente un openning maravilloso a una trilogía épica.

    The game is very interesting, for the plot, and the story well made. Is great to imagine the evolution (revolution) of the human mankind, and how was progressed is all well described during the game. The citadel is really a surprise and an emotion, the first time you visit.

Also going around with the tank is not so nice. In some worlds is very difficult to drive and the tank seems jump like a rabbit. But the game is very long, and i think you need to play it before to play the other 2 games of the series, to better understand, and above all, appreciate the story behind. So the plot and the story save the vote to not go below 8, to anyway, a great gaming Trilogy. I think that any lover of space and sci-phi, should play this trilogy.    … Expand

    I finished it just now in 2022, like 10 years after it was released lol. It is one of the best games i ever played. I couldn't wait to bang Ashley. The graphics still hold pretty well, the textures are pixelated here and there. I give it a solid 10, good story, nice gameplay.

    After finishing this game for the first time a few days ago I can confidently say that it was worth my time. I did not encounter any bugs and there were only two matters of note that show how old this game is.
    -There is a slowness that pervades this game.     -Autosave is incredibly unintuitive and nearly nonexistent. It requires you to "be out of combat" in order to manual save but sometimes combat is a reference to an area instead of a state so you get stuck and possibly die. This would not be so bad if there was not this "slowness" that I mentioned before but sometimes you will get one shot and have to start off 10 minutes back. (This is most common on the vehicle missions) Obviously it is not too bad or I would have quit but this is just a warning for those who are too used to the current way games save.

    The highlights of the game are the dialog, story and characters and the combat can take a bit to get used to but is very well implemented.    … Expand

    I really wanted to like this game but the clunky combat and lack of immersion from the narrative made me progressively loose interest in this one. The world building is great but canned dialog and by the numbers space opera plot dissapointed me.

РПГ система на висоті: ти можеш страдати і намагатися вбити боса, а можеш просто відговорити його фразами Героя чи Відступника; Ти можеш зберегти життя набридливої тобі Ради Галактики, чи пожертувати ними ради збереження життів мешканців Цитаделі; Можеш обрати хто буде представляти сторону людства в Раді: військовий Адмірал чи старий політик, що підтирався до минулої ради (якою, ти в свою чергу, вже подертвував). Відчуття загалом задовільні. Мінус пару балів за кривуватий порт із коробки на ПК (текстури мильні, анімації персонажів інколи хаотично перепригують, обриваються фрази діалогів, не дуже зрозуміла механіка бігу, і пздц довгий перегрів зброї, да й вобще хрін поньмеш де гранати відновити, аби колоністів не вбивати на вашій сюжетній місії, коли ти по тупості скинув цілебні гранати в мобів, що не рахувались зараженими колоністами).     A visually good game, with an amazing self altering and shaping story in a futuristic galaxy. Pretty decent game-play. But all together it was a very well built coherent game. On of a kind!

El único gran error que he cometido con esta compra es que no le he dado la bola suficiente para seguir explorando el infinito universo que nos ofrece para seguir haciendo tareas e ir demasiado a saco con la historia    ¿POR QUÉ ¿POR QUÉ? ¿Por qué se me ha hecho tan corto? ¿POR QUÉÉÉÉÉ?

    Esta es la sensación que he tenido tras terminarme mi primer gran RPG de Steam. Una OBRA MAESTRA. El único gran error que he cometido con esta compra es que no le he dado la bola suficiente para seguir explorando el infinito universo que nos ofrece para seguir haciendo tareas e ir demasiado a saco con la historia principal creyendo que iba ser más larga. NO HE PODIDO EVITARLO, el tramo final estaba demasiado emocionante para estar con otras cosas XD. Este error se corregirá cuando compre su secuela.

    Citaré principalmente los detalles más positivos del juego: de momento los mejores diálogos que he visto en un videojuego...cojas la respuesta que cojas, el comandante Sheepard lo expresará de una manera superépica y carismática; sistema de combate shooter en tercera persona táctico superentretenido; misiones secundarias con tramas decentes, buenos personajes y un villano a la altura. El único inconveniente que he encontrado serio ha sido la conducción del tanque que es...LAMENTABLE, se supone que es un vehículo superpesado y tiene unas físicas que parecen de vehículo teledirigido de 300 gramos y de verdad que he tenido serios problemas para intentar conducir ese cacho de chatarra XD.

    Así que teniendo en cuenta todo lo citado, esta es mi conclusión: IMPRESCINDIBLE para los fans e incluso para los no fans del RPG.    … Expand

    Mass Effect 1 was where it all started for me. The galaxy, the characters, and that sense of grand space adventure - it's all here. BioWare set the bar high with this one. Playing it felt like diving into a sci-fi novel, and I was hooked from start to finish.

    This is by far my favorite entry in the series. I have beat this game 12 times. This game is a painful reminder of how far Bioware has fallen. Sure the game is a little dated, but I love how sidequests actually are more than just fetch quests. I prefer this game's combat, in that I hate thermal clips.     I played this game of 2008 in 2016, and it was interesting to me. With its very simple graphics, it has a very, very strong atmosphere, history and game-play. It is a masterpiece.

    Highly recommended by some friends so I decided to buy it during sale on Steam,turns out I had a really good time exploring and knowing the universe of Mass Effect.
    The OST is good,the environment,the alien races,and it`s story in general with it`s characters as well. Although most side missions are    I heard of the series before,but I never had the interest to try the trilogy until 2019.
    Highly recommended by some friends so I decided to buy it during sale on Steam,turns out I had a really good time exploring and knowing the universe of Mass Effect.
    The OST is good,the environment,the alien races,and it`s story in general with it`s characters as well.
    Although most side missions are a bit boring to complete,some of them have a back-story to it,best one being Shepard`s,depending on what back-story you chose for him/her.
    Classes for the most part are enjoyable to play through,tho some of them requires extra knowledge or multiple playthroughs to understand them,like Infiltrator and Sentinel.
    Now I have a AMD laptop and the performance for the most part was good,except in some cases where it was stuttering all over the place.
    The gameplay is a bit clunky but playable.
    Overall,if you want an RPG with an amazing universe and a beautiful set of characters which isn't too complicated to understand,this is a game you must play through,at least once.    … Expand

    worst game in ME triology but still pretty good. now, in 2021 this game feels a little old, but anyway mass effect is must play, and i would recommend at least try this version, not remastered

    Amazing story-line, character development and universe build. This game throws you into a sci-fi world full of potential and adventure. You truly feel like Jack Shepard and connect with the connections he is making. Just be glad that the combat could be worse because its not great.

    Oh, my gosh! One of the best sci-fi games. I spent so many hours in it, learning it's world, experiencing great story and knowing complex and likable characters. Mass Effect is something extraordinary and even after all these years it's still really fun to play.

    Scenario is not really original but still iconic. The pace of the game is great. Missions are varied, interesting and attractive. Side quests bring even more variety and rewards. The choices you will have to do during your gameplay are draconian. As a mercenary and the toy of multiples sources of power you will have to do some sacrifices. (No spoil) The ending climax is insane and the intensity of the scenario will not stop until the very end.

    The feeling of progression is omnipresent as we are constantly levelling up. Trees of skills are amazing and the abilities you can learn help you getting through the game while trying different strategies.

    This game (as every game) has its own flaws. Firstly, it is a semi-open world and this completely goes on the opposite of the choice of living in space. As a reminder space is believed to be infinite. This breaks the immersion when you can't stop hitting invisible walls while trying to explore a bit. Secondly the story is quite short. If you focus on it you will need less than ton to fifteen hours to finish it. Phases with the Mako vehicule are both funny and terrible as its controls are really bad. Eventually some levels are quite confusing as the mini-map can't handle the different levels of the stages.    … Expand

    Pretty great game, it's clunky at parts but not so bad that it bothered me. Probably the best space setting I've seen in a piece of media. The story starts off decent but the 2nd half was really good and has me excited to play the rest of the series. The AI is kinda **** but it didn't really bother me and made me laugh a couple times.

    Good game, but struggling to drive up mountains & selling items taking forever & dialog skipping oversight & slow running & driving & limited sprint means a game+ playthrough is definitely not an option.

    Whilst fun and a good time, this game is a little bare bones. The story is interesting but overexplained. The huge amount of dialogue in this game is both impressive and redundant. The script needs editing and dialogue scenes need something more visually interesting to be happening. It needs different shot sizes, camera movement and character action.     This game takes forever to get going with a very long winded opening that feels like a walking simulator for the first few hours.
    Massive fail not allowing you to play the game past the end mission.

    This game is fantastic! Best rpg of 2008.I remember when I first saw characters animation I was shocked. Probably better than in Andromeda :p Great story, game play but the best parts are characters and relationship's between them. 10/10

This game has some of the best and most iconic video game characters ever created, a great story and some challenging decision making that will have a big impact on the game. Combat mechanics can feel a bit stiff sometimes but except for that this is a true classic.

    All the characters are great and interesting and the voice acting for everyone (including NPC's) is amazing and realistic. Besides that, the worldbuilding is perfectly planned out and this universe is well put and connected to the characters and in-game alien races.
    The story isn't anything new but it's good enough. There are some problems like: the villains are taken out of the game and don't interact with the main characters for half of the game; the shooting isn't anything spectacular but gets more interesting in the final sections of the game; the vehicle physics are incredibly stupid and have really sensitive controls; these sections are really boring, they are just running around and trying to control the vehicle while constantly shooting enemies...and the music is just decent in these parts and the game as a whole; there is some awkwardness in cutscenes: characters are being attacked and feeling pain but there is no reaction; the RPG elements and upgrades are a bit annoying.
    Even though there are a lot problems this game is something special because of the characters and a great universe and that's what is important in this game.    … Expand

The game is set in a freshly created universe, in the not so distant future, in which humanity encounters intelligent alien life and discovers the secrets of faster than light space travel. The world of Mass Effect has got an undeniable appeal right from the start, one that is only enhanced by the relative plausibility of the science involved, something that is often missing in similar sci-fi worlds. In its core, the story is the same old "save the universe" template, but it does not matter, because it is excellently written and full of the unexpected. It beautifully sets up the entire trilogy. The game allows you to make a great number of choices, some of which are very important in the long run and even in the rest of the trilogy. You can choose to be an orthodox good guy, by-the-book bore, cold hearted opportunist or even an outright evil badass, the range of the choices is fantastic. The gameplay is also amazing, the third person perspective allows you to have a better overview of the battlefield, which helps to promote the new companion/squad system. Six companions join you in your endeavors, each with a distinct personality and a personal agenda. Of those six, you can always choose two at will to accompany you on your missions. Then between missions, you can chat up and interact with all of them on you spaceship. This system has proven to be crowning jewel of the entire trilogy and also of the Dragon Age trilogy. The graphics is very nice, considering the 2008 release date, of course. The exploration of the distant worlds in your spaceship and in the Mako rover could have been fun, but it is mostly very repetitive and the Mako handling is infamously bad. Music is well chosen and nonintrusive. The game font is interesting and suits well the sci-fi setting of the universe. Beside the last point, there is not much I would held up against this game. Maybe the loot/economy system which is clearly imbalanced. You get too much loot, which will make you reach the currency cap of 10M quite early in the game, with nothing to spend it on.

    A great start of the trilogy, Mass Effect was a revelation back in the day, and it still makes for a fantastic play today. Final Verdict: 87%    … Expand

    When I first heard about Mass Effect I was very intrigued on how the gameplay could be. I knew it had multiple dialogue choices that affect how the story unfolds, nothing else. After playing I must say I love everything about this game; the intense shooting mixed with powers, the RPG elements, your team members, the story, the worlds, everything. Great game.

The fact that it is mostly a shooter I did not like very much, nor did I enjoy the vehicle sections, but at least they were not as boring as scanning planets for resources.     The original Mass Effect is a fantastic game that sets up one of the greatest trilogies in science fiction: solid characters, a good story with interesting worlds, meaningful decisions with lasting impacts. If you are able to look past its limitations (the combat mechanics and repetitive side quests), there is a lot of fun to be had here.

    It took time to understand the world and combat but when I passed the adaptation phase what I saw was incredible. The story was quite captivating and all RPG mechanics was well designed. I felt that I was a part of the world - an important one obviously - and enjoyed it.

While Dragon Age was more of Bioware's traditional bread and butter, Mass Effect was whole new territory, and thankfully, they succeeded. Mass Effect was the beginning of a new era for Bioware, and a beloved new world for people to get lost in. Well over a decade after its initial release, however, it's flaws have become more pronounced, but the fact that I still love going back to play through it to completion speaks volumes to its overall staying power.

    You take on the role of Commander Shepard (male or female). You are a career soldier turned Spectre (super cops basically) tasked with stopping rogue agent Saren and an army of synthetics known as the Geth from bringing destruction to the galaxy. You'll recruit various characters to your mission and make difficult decisions that not only affect you personally, but the galaxy as a whole. While the general story telling itself is solid enough, what the game does best lies within the world building and characters. Mass Effect may take cues from many well-known Sci-Fi properties, but they were also able to put their own spin on them, with various races with their own distinct style, personality and culture. More importantly, your party members are interesting and fun to talk to. While some are certainly better than others (Ashley...), people like Garrus and Wrex became instant favorites, and almost always remained in my party. The villain Saren may seem pretty one-note bad at first, but over the course of the game more is revealed about him and his layers begin to peel back to give us someone surprisingly more tragic than you would realize. The more I play ME, the more I appreciate certain details about this game that I never did the first time around.

    At its core, Mass Effect is an RPG with elements of a 3rd-Person Shooter. You explore various planets, engaging in quests and earning experience to level up and get stronger. The general shooting mechanics, on their own, are functional but not nearly as smooth as their contemporaries. The AI ranges from ruthless and tactful, to as dumb as gravel, standing out in the open just begging for you to kill them. At the start of the game you can choose from a variety of classes that have their own abilities and weapon and armor types. You can be either a soldier with access to every available weapon and armor, biotics with magic-like force abilities but with a limited load out, or Engineers that can break hard-to-crack safes and mess with synthetics. Depending on your class you'll need to choose a team that best suits your needs.

    One of the defining characteristics of Mass Effect is its emphasis on choice. Right out of the gate you can choose a basic background for Shepard, which can effect how characters interact with you and what side missions would be available. You are given a dialogue tree with three decision branches (Paragon, Renegade and Neutral) as well as opportunities for investigation. While some of it is there mostly for flavor and developing your Shepard's personality, other times it can greatly change how a person interacts with you and even force you to make decisions that affect peoples' lives in big and small ways. How you interact with people fills up either a Paragon or Renegade meter that further unlocks additional choices you can make. This system isn't perfect, but still gets the job done.

    As I've said, ME has definitely begun to show its age. While the game for its time looked incredible, some of the environments come off rather dull and uninspired. Conversations with characters are also pretty static, going through lots of shot-reverse shot with little movement involved (thankfully the solid voice acting carries them through). General sound editing is all over the place (LOTS of repeat banter from enemies) and much of the music is repetitive and rather forgettable. Exploration in your ground rover the Mako is simultaneously floaty and stiff, making traveling on more rugged terrain a nightmare. There are a good variety of planets to explore, but most don't contain much to do. Much of the sidequests take place in like four locations that are laid out exactly the same and it is visually dull, and yet I still go out of my way to do each of them because there is still an addicting quality to the exploration and side missions.

    While far from perfect, I still believe Mass Effect is worth looking into, especially since you can import your save data into ME2 and see where things progress. I'd say you can probably get away with calling the original Mass Effect a "flawed masterpiece". Dated in many respects, but a classic nonetheless.    … Expand

    Story is deep and exploration (including side quests) is just so satisfying that I could have just spent double the amount of time in this game if there were more planets to explore. Thankfully there are not enough planets so I could continue living my life in the outside world. Of course combat and menus are outdated but considering the date this is quite a polished experience for the time.

    Out of this everything else related to the game needs big improvements:
    - The combat is not smooth. It's not a FPS neither a tactical combat. It's something in between that's not working at all.
    - The locations are just boring. Out of a couple of history related locations, everything looks the same. Same planets with stupidly steep mountains, just with different colors. All the bases, caves, buildings, ... with exactly the same interior design and rooms.
    - The driving sections are a nightmare. You have a dummy car that bounces like an air balloon regardless of the planet gravity. The camera and controls are a real mess, not responding to the directions you're commanding.
    - The "opening things" minigame is annoying as hell. Not because it's difficult but because you have the same minigame over an over for everything: opening boxes, investigating minerals, searching bodies, ... You really don't need minigames for quite basic actions and absolutely not a kind of decoding game when you're doing any activity that's not related to electronics at all.
    - The inventory management sucks. Long lists of items without any other distinction than text stats. So many sections and nothing you can equip/unequip/compare dynamically.
    - No one can understand how an elite space marine can only sprint 2 meters and then has fatigue during a long time. Same with the car that has only a few seconds boost that does not even serve to climb the smallest mountain.
    - There's no point on most of the dialogue options. Regardless of your selection, its tone and meaning, Shepard always says the same and most of the time not what you're expecting because of your selection.
    - Taking into account the amount of dialogues in the game, more language translations would be appreciated.    … Expand

    Mass Effect was one of the very first games that i played on PC. it had a very big impact on me and changed my opinion about video games. I was so interested in the characters, the world and their interactions. the gameplay was solid and fun (a bit flawed in some aspects) and the journey was one of the most immersive experiences that I had with video games.

    Hard game to enjoy now but still not bad, and this game lead to the creation of the best game of all time

    Start of an amazing trilogy. Great rpg with a lot of action and choices. Despite legendary edition fixed many bugs in that game, the original version still have its mystery and unique atmosphere.

    I played this game for the first time in 2018 or 2019 and i kinda got let it unfinished after doing 3 or 4 main missions. I replayed it in 2021 and actually finished it. The story is still good as it was the first time dont get me wrong, i was focusing on some sides that were too hard the first time. But with the new legendary edition it was ok, i managed to finish those section, the virimire mission is actually really cool. But yeah other than that the game does everything really good: the plot, the rpg, the characters, exploration. It s a 8.5 game for me even for 2008 but maybe some people might not like nowdays witch is too bad because mass effect 2 and 3 really hold up well compared to this one in terms of gameplay… Expand

    Computer owners are getting everything found in the Xbox 360 game, including achievements and online leaderboards, but with better visuals, smoother action, and a more streamlined interface. That the game rings up at a lower retail price and offers the first expansion pack as a free download is simply icing on the cake.
