This is the best game I have ever played. Although it's graphic is not as beautiful as the following MEs but the complex character evolution is the best in the series. Lot of people hate Mako quests but I have no problem with them. All in all my favorite episode is the first one in the series.

Better than Skyrim, Witcher 3 and Dragon Age all together. Unfortunately every next ME game was more and more stripped down from their rpg mechanics, being more consolized, but this one, this has all the magic. Exploration of planets makes it almost perfect sandbox game. Graphics for an almost 10 yo game still looks very good and doesn't stand out from today's standards. What else for me to say. Maybe that i wish Bioware stop the trilogy with... the first and only Mass Effect. Instead of reapers make the Saren Diablo-like treat to entire galaxy and voila. ME2 is at least fun but ME3 is so dumb (and i'm not **** only about the ending) that it almost kill the pleasure of entire game but gladly i overcome it and for me the history of Shepard ends here, with ME1 and the rest i leave for my imagination. The story was brilliant and very well developed, it kept me at the edge of my seat until I finished it. The graphics were stunningly beautiful and the pacing of it managed to keep me interested in everything that was shown here. I didn't manage to complete a lot of side-quests but the ones I did were entertaining and quite funny, actually.
The characters in general had a certain level of complexity that captivated me along the way and sometimes I would choose other options to just see them talk about things that happened in their past.
But the most interesting aspect of Mass Effect was the capacity of making your own choices and deciding which dialogues your main character would say and how their ending was going to be. That, in my opinion, is what makes ME such a unique game in this industry.
And because of all this, I have to give it 10/10. Such an amazing videogame and I can't wait to play ME2! :D

The best installment in the entire series. The game that started it all. The questions presented in this game will keep you hooked for the whole trilogy, and you will come to miss many of the RPG elements that 2 and 3 downsized.

BioWare knew what the hell it was doing when it decided to use the experience they got from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and decided to apply all that to an original IP for the company. And the result: a classic that forever changed gaming in 2007.

Mass Effect can debate-ably be considered Canada's biggest important of the 21st Century; at least in multimedia storytelling which the franchise has since gone on to 'effect'.

Commander Shepard, The Reapers, Garrus, Tali, Urdnot Wrex have all gotten well-deserved love and respect from gamers everywhere. Mass Effect is a special franchise that feels like it's always been there in the background.

Before that game, I wasn't interesting at all at playing Sci-Fi games because I found them too boring, even though I really like Sci-Fi movies. This game changed my perspective about games, gave me unforgettable experiences and initiated me into the world of Mass Effect. I will continue the series until the end to find out everything about this magnificent world.

I personally loved the combat that made you focus more on leveling up the player according to your own style. But the BEST bit about mass effect is Of course its incredible stroyline. You can determine the fate of this epic by choosing different dialogue options. I will admit that this game gave me goosebumps numerous times during my play-through. The story is excellent and has twists. There are choices and consequences. Decisions you make in Mass Effect 1 can have an impact in Mass Effect 2 and 3. Characters could die and that will impact your story.

I also like the space setting because I feel like there are too many medieval fantasy RPGs. Well done space RPGs are much rarer, This also allows for the introduction of new, unique races like the turians, the quarians, the krogan, the salarians and others. I am a bit tired of the typical dwarves, elves and orcs from medieval fantasy RPGs.

There are also some light criticisms to make. The combat isn't that great and it can feel clunky. Also, the paragon/renegade system kind of forces you to go all in. If you play a more nuanced character, you may be locked out of certain options that require high paragon/renegade points. But the game is so good that these issues don't matter much.

I can't wait for the remastered versions. If you like RPGs, you HAVE TO play the Mass Effect series.

I probably wont be able to, so heres the jist of it. -The graphics are amazing. Not perfect and there are certain times where I wonder if it will crash when it pauses for a bit, but its still, just utterly breathtaking. -Conversations are smoother this time around. It feels like i'm actually speaking to someone instead of standing there like a dolt without saying a word until 3 minutes later. If I were talking to somone who took 3 minutes to respond, I would've ditched them already. -Its not strictly black and white when it comes to choices. You actually have to be able to make decisions based on logic or preference or how you deem your character would react. You can be both Paragon or Renegade to a certain extent on the meters. Neither decreases the points of the other. -The abilities and weapons are great. Being able to throw people out floating in thin air or warping their insides is more satisfying than just running up to an NPC with horrible AI and shooting their face off. -Customization of your own character is endless. Not the depth of Oblivion(Which drove me nuts, took me at least 3 hours to make a perfect face) but enough to make your character truly unique. What I loved the most was the makeup and the scars you could put on her face. (Never really created a male shep before but have tried). -Main missions are interesting and well designed. I guess the only downside would be that they are so awesome that the next time I replay this game i'd probably skip all the side quests and go for the main plot everytime. -The other characters are neat and have the funniest lines! Even just an NPC that you would encounter somewhere could hold the wittiest banter you could ever hear in a game. Most of them don't all look the same and the gestures aren't overly repetitive. -The music is epic. Not much else to say about it. Its not cheesy and portrays the events hapening or about to come perfectly. -Environments for the main missions are spectacular. It went from caveish, to ruiny, to snowy and then tropical. I looked forward to the next one everytime. -Controls are easy to learn and combat situations require some degree of thought before entering. Can't just charge and blast anymore, have to know what weapon to use, who to use and what to do tactically. A few complaints that make this game a 9 for me: -The side quests. At first, I thought some of them were cool, but after a while they got repetitive. Each side quest planet had things to collect and seemed very bare. I understand they were considered poorly populated worlds, but couldn't we see where the Turians or Volus live for example? Just a little peek? -More interaction between companions. I mean, they did talk to each other once in a while and I did get the sence that(for example, Kaidon and Ashley talked to each other like they were old pals) but what about the others? Need some arguments or some jokes, something so that you know they acknowledge each other as more than a face they see every 4 days. -The option to turn on your companions in the end. I wouldn't pick it on my first playthrough, but it would be nice if it was there for my second. A renegage would most likely abandon their friends and go where the money or the power takes them. Other than that, this is a revolutionary RPG/Action game. I'm looking forward to playing through it and getting a couple of the acheivements in there. Can't wait for ME2! Expand

The controls feel responsive, and have been optimized for the PC (along with better squad control and number bound quickslots). The story is amazing, and the fictional universe is on par with Star Wars. Character customization is quite in depth...I was actually able to create a character that looked somewhat like me in real life. You can play it with a run and gun style, or take on more of a support role and use some tactics. Most of the characters on your team are unforgettable, and I cared about what happened to them. I want to play through the game again already and its only been about a month since I finished it. The graphics are good, amazing even at some locations, and you'll be able to bump the resolution even higher than the console version if you have a powerful PC. However, there are some negatives. I had trouble getting the game to start on my PC. I have Vista 32-bit,and I was able to fix this issue by setting the game to "Always run as administrator". The game tends to crash once every few hours. The worst issue by far, however, is the buy/sell menu. You'll automatically be picking up lots of items, and you can only hold up to 150. Trips to vendors will probably be frequent. When you go to the sell menu, all you get is a completely disorganized list of ALL your items and you can only see around 10 on a single page if I'm remembering correctly. This results in a huge time sink as you go down the list, figuring out what you want to let go of and what you want to keep. I've spent over half an hour in a single selling session, but that probably has a lot to do with my play style. Anyway, the pros of Mass Effect outweigh the cons, and you should definitely pick this up if you have a decent PC and you haven't played the console version already. Expand

The interaction makes you a part of it, and the fact that it is a rare game that gives you that "command decision" (those of you who have beat it know what I am talking about) as well as a few other twists and turns dependent on who you are and what you've done really gives you an interactive story feel. Bio ware didnt fail imo but the weapons and armor do feel a little old very soon with repatitve models and little to no difference in upgrades until about the end of the game. 3)While I give kudose for attempting at replayability, even going a drastically differernt path still feels too familiar and makes it difficult to play, even though I really want to (ie playing through with the higher gear or playing through as a bioic with assult rifle ) I criticise because thats part of the job of crticing a game but ultimately it is a great game, and its opne or two minor downfalls are really the only reason its not a perfect 10 and I wish metacritic had a better/more accurate rating system so I could go as far as 9.5. Very good CRPG, absolutely one of the best. Good action, clean and easy mechanics, interesting characters. However, there are 2 problems: too much of chit-chatting and disbalance in classes. E.g. adept is weakest of all. Hope ME2 will have more battles, less talking and good balance.

Having completed what I guess is 90+% of all the quests in the game I clocked in at 32 hours. Which isn't bad but doesn't even come close to NW or BG. The main storyline could easily be completed in half the time. however, apart from its excellent story and outstanding atmosphere, bioware ruined this masterpiece with some things: first, a technical complain: the old version of the unreal engine 3 used in this game sucks ass. why the hell did you use that piece of crap? what was wrong with the aurora engine used in other bioware games like the witcher? or even better, why didn't they use the cryengine2, it would've made this game PERFECT! the ue3 causes nothing but trouble, badly pixelated shadows and ingame loadings! second, some things should have been better, like the covering system (improved in mass effect 2), and the AI (both friendly and enemy). another thing that kinda sucks are the side quests: most of them get boring and repetitive pretty quickly and most of them look the same.

in conclusion, all i can say is that this game is GREAT, but not perfect

I'll admit that I was wary at first, not only because it was a console port, but also because I kept hearing about "tactics" and the shooter aspect of it, leading me to think it might not be my cup of tea. (Or almost but not quite entirely unlike tea. [Apologies to Adams.])

I have since started to play Mass Effect 2, and the rush of nostalgia I've felt at various points reminded me how much I enjoyed the first one, particularly its characters. Yes, the interface was mildly cumbersome at times, and yes, the side quests could have used a bit more variety. And yes, there were times when I thought, "Really? Is this battle still going on?" But for the most part I manage to suspend my disbelief enough during the game to the point where I actually CARED what happened to my companions. And the fact that those events carry over into the sequel is a nice touch (but admittedly has less to do with the first game.)

Having played the original game about a year and a half ago on the Xbox 360, I decided to try it on the PC in response to Mass Effect 2 so I could play them both back to back. I have to say that even after this length of time, factoring in the other games that have been released in the meantime, that this game still holds the fascination that I once had for my initial play through on the 360. In fact it has probably improved in the transition. I say this for the additional use of hot keys, the keyboard in general, the slight redesign of the interface, and the ability to use the familiar WASD/mouse scheme. To me, these are probably one of the biggest selling points for me to purchase the game on PC. Everything else is pretty much the same as the console versions, with the exception of shorter load times in general, and apparently less of the texture problems (although I can't say I remember how bad they were on the consoles). I feel the graphics are definitely well done, with many of the visuals/locations/atmosphere standing out dramatically. Bioware's games definitely reek of quality and immersion, and Mass Effect is no exception. Few rpgs that I can think of really make me feel lost in their worlds, but this game definitely succeeds in many ways. From the well designed locations, piles of data in the codex, and massive amounts of back-story/history, you can tell they put thought not only in the game play, but also the agreed upon fiction of their universe. The game play of Mass Effect is solid, but most importantly fun, as I never get tired of rushing into combat, driving the Mako (I know, I know a lot of people hate it) and blowing stuff up, or even just "interrogating" my crewmates. The AI is pretty competent in their behavior, although it has it's moments of brilliance and stupidity, which is to be expected, but overall can give a good challenge unexpectedly, causing a torrent of cursing from me. That's a good thing. Repetition is kind of a problem for the various Assignments in the game, as you will be doing a lot of planet scanning for minerals or seeking something to land on. The former is for the various fetch assignments while the latter allows you to drive the Mako planet-side. While driving on the many planets sometimes seems like a chore, I felt that it was tolerable enough and it allowed me to enjoy driving around some barren landscape. While this might not seem so much fun, a lot of it had to do with just taking in the beauty of the area around you, along with the thrill of not being guided by the linear corridors of the main quests. Mileage will definitely vary in regards to that, but thankfully the assignments are all at-will and you can choose to do as many as you see fit, which helps make it much more tolerable. Probably one of the most important aspect of this game is the story. My god, the amount of clichés and tropes in this game serves as a sort of sci-fi/popculture reference machine, and for some reason...all those things aside, I absolutely love the storyline. To me, this game pumped some much needed blood into a stagnating genre and made me love rpgs all over again. One of my biggest complaints of previous games was that I very rarely cared about the characters I was interacting with/playing, but Bioware has managed to bring something very compelling into how they unfold/tell the characters tales. I think this separates this game from the pack most of all. It also goes to serve a reminder that knowing how to tell a compelling, yet stereo-typical story, can make all the difference. When all is said and done, Mass Effect is a definite classic and does have elements for many different types of gamers. That being said it tells a very compelling and human story where you have the freedom to work out just who you want your character to be, within the limits of the story frame, of course. Expand

I'll admit that there are some aspects that could be done better, such as repetitive missions, occasional glitches and average music, but this is more than made up for by the rest of the game. The decisions were never easy to make and are made all the more important by the fact that your choices will stick with you for ME2 and ME3, which is an absolutely fantastic idea. The difficulty levels were also superb, I found that there were a few moments that would get me sufficiently frustrated, forcing me to work out a better way through the level, maximising the use of my squad, but not so frustrated that it made me turn off the game.

All in all, Mass Effect is a game well worth playing, especially for the fact that you carry on your save file to ME2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While not old-school RPG this game should definitely satisfy also action shooters players - if they don't mind running around a few places (Citadel and Noveria especially). But even that is fun. Graphics, sound - all very good. Gameplay, control, menus - good as well. Story is very good - after all who wouldn't like to safe a galaxy, right? RPG - I'm no expert here, but you have to make some decisions that are more or less difficult - and they make some difference. Ironic enough - they make probably more the difference in Mass Effect 2. :-) Game time is also satisfying for such a cinematic game. Game also leads you nicely through and it's hard to get stuck in the story - which I prefer.

Now the problems. Safe point before unskippable video and dialog followed by a fight where you often go down in a matter of a few seconds while you realize what's the best tactic. Safe points are PITA at least on two occasions. Two different modes (combat/non-combat) have two different control systems, but that can be handled. Exploration (material gathering) doesn't make sense. Terrain for Mako is dramatic, but needs smoothing - badly. Many bases on side quests are similar - but this is pardonable. Also - you'll likely use only a few characters from your team - but this may vary if you choose different profession. Character graphics (especially faces) are sometimes ugly - minor glitches disrupting otherwise nice cinematics. No major bugs, which is good.

Favourite moment: Virtual intelligence notifying the enemy about other "customers" in line. That one made my day. :-)

Bottom line: Great game, stunning story, a lot of fun.

Many apologies to all of the fans of this one, but I still give it a 9 for bringing to the table gameplay elements that would have worked in an mmo(like the massive universe that is almost completely explorable) but were more fun in a single player setting. I liked the fact that it has a replay value higher then any other game ever. Ever time you play through this game you can try a new strategy, a new romance, be evil, etc. In the end having so much to do seemed like a strength and a weakness of the game. Expand

That old game was the reason why I was interested in Mass Effect. SW KotOR was one of my favorite games. Mass Effect blows it out of the water. The story lines in this game are incredible. Its easy to get lost in it. The player gets to choose what happens in the future that can effect what happens all the way through the second and to the third game of the Mass Effect trilogy. Customization is high. Graphics are good. I played on low graphics and found it satisfying. Each character has its own personality. This game is like a great movie that you get to play in. As for game play, again, weapons, armor, appearance are customizable with upgrades and levels. One down part is the driving across worlds with basically nothing and tedious mountains with the "space car". I just found it boring and time-taking. There is so much to this game it's tough to say it all, so just go give it a play-through and see what you think. Just don't go into the game expecting it to be some way, see it as something you don't even know about, and you will enjoy playing the game. Expand

Nit-picks: interior cells are mostly copy-pasted for the many side missions, planet worlds could have been more lively. Other than at the Citadel you hardly meet people other than bad guys of one sort or another. The inventory is a mess, should have some sort of sorting option. The controls of the vehicle are a bit whacko. So this is why I give 9 points, otherwise it would be one of the very few 10's I would ever give to a game.

To begin with let me tell you the following: I played both the Xbox and PC versions and I can tell you, must tell you to get a 360 controller for your PC to play it. Mass Effect has been designed to be controlled with a game pad.

The game looks fantastic; I got it running at 1280x768 px in full-screen mode -all settings in medium and no dynamic shadows- on a AMD Phenom II X4 920 at 2.80 GHz with 4 GB of RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 210 card with 1Gb of DDR2 RAM. I only experienced some hiccups when the engine threw at me lots of fogging and heavy water effects. If your computer is even worse than mine, you can drop the resolution to 1024x768 on the windowed mode and it'll do pretty good. For a 3 year-old game it still looks amazing: water surfaces, reflections, textures and the lightening are terrific.

The gameplay is reminiscent of Gears of War with RPG elements thrown in as our squad members can access their abilities either passively by means of battle menu or actively using the keyboard short-cuts. We control commander Shepard that can either be female or male and whose face we can design to our own liking; Shepard is the only character we can fully control as the rest of them, members of our squad, are semi-automatic. Our active squad is composed by three party members and they can be ordered to move forward, backward, attack or defend and we can also access their skills through the passive battle menu. These skills come in the form of biotic powers, mainly telekinetic abilities such as pull, push, force shield and space distortion: biotics are Mass Effect's gameplay core and a lot of fun. Apart from shooting and using biotic skills in a back third person perspective there are several missions that require vehicle driving and shooting: the Mako. These missions usually are pretty straight-forward however fun; the Mako is equipped with a rail gun and a cannon and both will heat and shut down temporarily after repeated and heavy use: the Mako will also take damage that can be repaired using omnigel paks. The Mako will also serve to explore the different planets that will be visited, on which resources and secrets can be found to progress the story, unlock features and improve the equipment. There are more RPG elements than using biotic powers, weapons and armours can be purchased and upgraded and the game is heavily scripted as well with multiple conversation choices to pick leading to different results.

Even though I suggested getting a console controller to play it, using the keyboard-mouse combination has its advantages because we can assign more than two buttons to the special abilities. The mouse is used to target and move the camera around as well as the Mako turret, the left button is for shooting and the right button is for precise targeting. The space bar is for bringing up the passive battle menu and the shift key for running like in Gears of War. Fortunately, the control setup allows mouse inversion and tweaking for all the key assignments.

The sound quality of the game is really good but not impressive overall however its voice acting is terrific and this is where this aspect of the game shines.

The musical score is futuristic and serves its purpose wonderfully yet it is not memorable with the exception of the end-titles song.

The story is really engaging and well written with several plot twists. Each team member has their own and we get to know them by means of the several conversations available through the course of the game. The best part of the scripting is how much detail Bioware put into the universe to make it plausible: they went to the extent of adding an encyclopaedia with all the game scientific and biological terminology as well as planetary information and entries on the alien races' civilizations. There is so much thought put into this universe unlike most of the other sci-fi games released except the Xenosaga series, which is even more complex. The whole universe sustains itself in a wonderful and believable way thanks to the writer's wit that allowed them to come up with technology and scientific concepts not far away from our current reality and what we might consider possible.

The art is not impressive in a complicated way: its functional, it suits the universe and serves to sustain the fictional world of the script yet it is not original. Some planets are beautiful and breath-taking and the Normandy has been wonderfully designed. There is a lot of simplicity put into the art design that fortunately highlights the overall impression rather than making it dull nonetheless most planetary surfaces and facilities are repetitive with the same type and distribution of elements within them.

All in all, Mass Effect is one of the best games ever released: it has wonderful graphics, a fantastic voice acting, entertaining gameplay and a very well written and cohesive fictional world; there isn't much else that anybody can ask for a good game to be good and Mass Effect covers all of these aspects superbly.

Still holds up fairly decent in 2019. I would recommend graphical mods on PC of course to give it a little extra polish. However even though the combat is still a bit clunky it doesn't detract from what makes Mass Effect great which is the story, lore, and of course the characters.

The galaxy map is single-handedly intriguing, surrounded by the empty void of the dark space. The planets graphical rendering may look dull; however, the chemistry of music and simple barren plains adds to the feeling of a far more plausible space exploration. Beyond that, Mass Effect tells an original and, much to my astonishment, unsettling story. It mesmerises with its brilliant vision of a universe ruled by a hierarchy of different races, humanity not being, for the first time, one of them. The rising evil depicted throughout the plot will force the player to beg for questions over the relativity of humanity attitude towards the universe. Eventually, this is a thorough-to-master game, at least to grasp its very sci-fi/rpg essence. Nevertheless, it does worth trying. Expand
