Very fun game. Deserved GOTY on IGN.

Good: Loved the first one, second one's storyline was epic too. Soundtrack epic. Voice acting epic. Beautiful worlds. Graphics were decent. Problems: mining is bad. not enough RPG elements. AI squadmates are slightly annoying.

Easily a 10 for the first 90% of the game. The only thing kept me from calling this "perfect" was how much it built up to the conclusion and then ending abruptly (which is to say how badly I wanted more from it). Great game! Mass Effect 2 improves on many areas of its predecessor, which is no mean feat. I enjoyed this game a lot, but agree with other critics that they took away a very fun element, which was the RPG element, probably a bit less micromanagement was the way to go, not completely removing it.

I also found it a bit short, kinda disappointed that i have to pay to get any more extra content that should have been included as side quests for the money i payed...

Too empty for an RPG, too branching for a shooter, Mass Effect 2 sits in a genre all it's own. I'll admit, when it first came out, I thought Mass Effect 2 was just a lousy attempt by Bioware to make money, but with the new free DLC, it began to look like something good. With all the DLC that Bioware's released, it's finally a good game.

Mass Effect 2 has a good if not the best story in a game i have ever seen and there for the story is also the main selling point. The gameplay is not Super but it is ok. I would give it 9,5 if i could. But now its 10. Its my favorite game.

I have spend above a 100 hours in mass effect 2, so you might as well ask yourself why I dont give this game a perfect 10. Its quite simply really, there are some small flaws. With that said; I find there are two flaws in this game. First, the number of comrades you pick up in the game is to large. Now, you might ask why this could possibly be a problem. This is quite simple, all of them have a "loyalty quest" - and with so many comrades all the sidequests feel a disconnected to the main plot. Add to this that with so many comrades, you never get a special feeling for any of the comrades - like you did in the first mass effect where you had a more limited number of them. Its a shame really.

The second flaw, is the whole weapon system. This problem is more compounded by several smaller issues. First off is the "new and improved" ammo system, which blows to be honest. The first game had a heatcooldown system, which was actually fine. Now you have what they call "heat clips" that are universal, yet you cant shift them between the your weapons - this is just plain odd. besides the weapon selection is dumbed down to much. You have a severely limited amount of weapontypes to choose from, and the way you upgrade and find them feel.... well to be honest, mildly retarded. But even though the games have these flaws, I will still rate it a 9 for the solid script, plot and surperb gameplay.

The most re playable out of any game I have ever owned, far too much fun I cant wait for the third installment. I do hope that they add more RPG element to 3 like more customizable weapons (like in ME1) and armor. And maybe even more powers for biotics. either way I'm looking forward to ME3

A satisfying game that lives up to the first game in just about every sense. The game allows you to be the galaxy's most-feared renegade or its most-loved paragon. The only downside is the removal of some RPG elements that made the first game quite enjoyable.

ME2 is not a good game because it improves on the short comings of Mass Effect 1, its good because it has an interesting story and setting that has depth and things are at stake to care about, well designed characters aesthetically and with personality, the decision making is not only ambitious but is pulled off very well, brilliantly and originally designed environments, creatures, costume and armour, and technically performs well at least on my PC with game play that feels satisfyingly good. The characters are good and memorable, I actually felt dread when some of them die, if you dont fall in love with Garrus, Tali, Legion, and Thane by the end of ME2 you have problems, I even grew attached to the space ship. I also want to make a big shout out to the legendary soundtrack, everyone must download the track Suicide Mission from Itunes now, its freaken awesome. The lack of depth in the RPG at first seems like a good thing as the shooting mechanics are good but after playing the game for over 60 hours it starts to show is thin side and has you missing some of the lacking RPG of the first game. I also dont think the decisions a player can make are perfect, who in their right mine didnt save the alien counsel in ME1? Who didnt save Wrex? But overall ME2 is a remarkable achievement and a new benchmark for modern single player games! Expand

Once again you can play as Shepard who is violently killed when the Normandy is attacked then the organization Cerberus rebuilds you and you have to find out what is happening and stop it. Instead of being bossed around by the alliance you are bossed around by the Illusive Man voiced by Martin Sheen. The Game looks beautiful and the sound of plasma rushing past your head is great too. The combat is similar to Mass Effect 1 there is some new powers it is lighter on the RPG side but I did not mind that because the devs put extra detail into the battles. This time you have ammo instead of guns heating up which is great. You go to different planets in the game and gather up a crew to fight the enemy. There are little side missions to gain the crews loyalty too to increse the survivability on the final mission and if you suck bad on the final mission you can even get Shepard killed. I didn't make any sexy relationships this time over all that I did was have a girl over for dinner though but then she died. I wish in some way it did, and an alternative path could be taken by a Renegade than the paragon fan. It is not the case, unfortunately. The rhythm of the game is, too, a little bit off - it seems every character (from your gathered team) waits until the very end of the game, to pour his entire life's story on you. Very anti-climatic, considering how the ending picks up the pacing of the story. These are the only negatives i have for this game - otherwise, a solid blockbuster for me! Enjoyed highly! Expand

The environments all look and feel unique which is a great step from the recycled optional environments from the original. There is so much good about the game it merits atleast 2 play throughs do you can make different choices and try both renegade and paragon approaches. Where the game could use some improvement is minor and very subjective. Combat is great but the enemies are not all that varied. The first boss figh in the game is recycled several times which gets boring but it is usually only on the optional missions where this is seen. More equipment customization would be nice since the only real option is 2 armor suits some different head gear and the guns (of which there are many). Took away 2 points because it's hard to transition from Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2. I quite enjoyed this game. It improved on ME1s combat and it was a great story as well. The customization of the weapons saddened me. Too few weapons, no way to improve via modifications. Also, I disliked the running. You couldn't run any other direction but straight, and you couldn't even run for too long. But none of this affected my score too much, if I could give a 9.5, I would. Now for the bad: exploration is completely gone. Instead of improving it like they did with the combat they just removed it completely. The replacement for it, the mining game, is not any better. The galaxy seems smaller now but the multitude of hub worlds sort of fills in the gap left by it. They also removed the inventory system (which was very bad in ME1) and replaced it with an upgrade system. It's good but it still would've been better to have an inventory. My main complaint is that there is little you can do to customize your characters: your main character can wear different armor pieces which are slightly different, and along the way you collect weapon upgrades which are automatic. The only real customization is in your talent points, but there are few of these and they do not generally affect gameplay as much as you might expect. I ended up taking these limitations with a grain of salt and just enjoyed blasting things instead, but I could see this being a significant setback for some players. Expand

I spent close to 36 hours playing this game with all the DLC and enjoyed every second of building up a squad and slowly playing through their loyalty missions in order to leave no one behind at the final mission. My only criticism is that it is it is less open world then it should be as after all you are given a galaxy to explore and yet can only walk around on a small number of them and 3/4 have no purpose other than mineral gathering. But overall the style of this game has one me over 9/10. Expand

Finally, it seems that choosing different squadmates has a very small impact on gameplay- it makes little difference who I choose to bring with me. They all do about the same amount of damage- the only thing that changes are your abilities, which means that teammates with the more useful abilities should ALWAYS be chosen over those that don't have useful abilities. Other than this, everything about the game (except for the mining mini-game. Don't get me started on that) is phenomenal- there is a universe here that is meant to be explored, and boy is it fun. Again, in my humble opinion, the Mass Effect series is first and foremost a story-driven game. Every moment, from the beginning of the series when you first walk aboard the SSV Normandy SR-1 to the scene before the piss-poor, highly disagreeable series ending in ME3, had me begging for more because I wanted to know what was going to happen. Or, often enough, what COULD and WOULD happen given which options I choose to follow to advance the story. I mean, with an opening scene like this that REALLY got your attention and hit you in the gut, it's hard not to like the storyline.

I think combat gameplay is better in this one than the first game, and I definitely like the more streamlined and simpler inventory system and UI in general. While the extensive customization and looting from the first game was done away with, there continues to be a decent amount of both in this installment of Mass Effect. I particularly like decking out your cabin as well as upgrading your ship those were pretty cool additions and I wish there was more customization like that.

    Buy it. Play it. Enjoy.

You can see that the developers put a lot of effort in the cities and they look really beautiful. Sadly the game faces a small problem. The combat can be very clumsy sometimes. It is not very dynamic, instead it reminds me of trenches combat in World War I. Enemies almost never rush you and as long as you stay in cover you won't die. You often learn more about the back stories of the playable characters by helping them out in side missions. These missions also make the game becoming more non-linear so that you, most of the time, can decide yourself what to do the next.

The environments and the music manage to capture the essence of a dark science fiction world and make you feel really absorbed in the game.
Developing your characters and receiving new powers is satisfying. The powers are fun to use and makes for a dynamic combat. However, despite having a disposal of different kind of powers the combat gets slightly repetitive in the long run.
Aside from the somewhat repetitive combat there isn't anything to complain about and overall Mass effect 2 is an amazing game.

That's not to say the gameplay wasn't superb; it just doesn't quite give you the same adrenaline rush as blowing you enemies into little bits as you can in Borderlands 1 & 2, or sprinting through Call of Duty (4 or beyond) with a shotgun: getting an insane score streak and calling in a VTOL or something. The graphics were very good, especially considering that it is from early 2010; sure, it's not Crysis, but I really don't care. Also: the mineral collection pretty much sucked. I spent at probably 3-6 hours collecting minerals just to get all the upgrades I could: upping my first play through time to around 60 hours: of course, that is with beating virtually every side quest by the end of the game, (save a couple, and this is without DLCs). Another very annoying thing too me as an Infiltrator was the sniper slow-mo. I mean, seriously, around 5 seconds of slow motion (apparently at max level, which I did very early) to find your target I will admit, it does make the game much easier in hardcore/insanity, but it takes a lot of the challenge away. There was also far too much ammo around; I think they should have made it more like Crysis 2 in that regard, having some kind of tactical battlefield view, having to sprint with your tactical cloak to grab some more ammunition for your squad. There also should have been more weapons, and an inventory. While there were *enough* weapons to get the job done, I think it would have been much more enjoyable to once again have weapon/armor pickups, and weapon/armor mods instead of *powers* that do the same thing. Can't decide if I like or dislike not having grenades. The characters were again simply amazing: so much though and effort obviously went into them, and it was definitely a good choice on the devs part. There (can be) so much interaction between Shepard and the characters that by the end they really felt like more than just my crew, they were like family. What you say and do can have so much influence on what happens with and to them, (and vice versa, if you at all care about them), that you just really start feeling connected with them. Starting in the first game, but even more so in this game, did I really start too understand and sympathize with the plight of the Quarians (if you've played it, you can probably see some real world connections). You may also begin to reconsider the Geth as a whole, depending on what you do. Too sum it up: I give the Story 10/10, Characters 10/10, Voice Acting 9/10, Sound FX 9/10 Graphics 8/10, Overall Gameplay 8/10, Music 7/10 (Daft Punk works pretty well with it though), Space Exploration 6/10, Tactics 6/10. Last thing I have to say: Play it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a continuation of me reviewing the entirety of the Mass Effect franchise which i had the pleasure of purchasing and playing through it throughout it. I already reviewed Mass Effect 1 and thought it was a good start to this franchise. So what about the 2nd one? Well let's find out

    Pros:
-The graphics have definitely gotten an upgrade. everything looks better, flashier and prettier. The worlds you land on look interesting with their own habitats and cities to explore. Don't be mistake though, this is a linear game but you have so much wiggle room in the areas that they put you in
-Once again the story is fantastic. It continues the story to Mass Effect one where Sovereign was destroyed and a new threat called the Collectors are wiping out human colonies. Commander Shepard is hired by the Illusive man (played brilliantly by Martin Sheen by the way) to investigate the disappearances of the colonies. What happens next i won't spoil because if you're a loser like me and have only just discovered this franchise then i don't wanna spoil it for you
-The combat has been improved by a ten fold. No more is getting to cover a chore, now it's seamless and fluid. No longer does aiming feel like somebody's pushing your right hand, now it's perfect. And most importantly. NO MAKO!! Thank the spirits for that
    - The characters. Dear God the characters are so good. Every single one of your companions has their own stories, backgrounds which you'll need to discover in order to keep them alive and so on. And the love interests are actually good (P.S Tali is the ultimate space waifu and i will strangle you if you think otherwise)

    Cons:
-One thing i will complain about when it comes to Mass Effect 2 is that it feels less like an RPG than the previous installment. Not that Mass Effect 1 was very RPG to begin with but they took out the most basic RPG elements to make it more action oriented. Which is fine by me but for some people it might get them turned off

In conclusion in my opinion this is the best game in the Mass Effect franchise. It has everything you'd want and more. And at the end of the game, when you see the big terrifying space octopuses flying in mass towards Earth, you know **** is about to go down. In the 3rd one at least

This game was my first in the Mass Effect series. Unfortunately I discovered the series way after it was popular. So at first I didn't know what the hub bub was about. If your new to the series at first it just seems a little flat. It seemed it was more about graphics and such. And the series seemed to be a more modern and not Star Wars universe rip off of KOTOR.

After you get playing you see what the series is about. It has a lot going for it. First it is a first person shooter for the average Joe. Then they throw in coordinated squad combat. They up the anti by giving you a character that can allow you to chose good or bad actions, as you choose without ruining the storyline. They wisely have you playing the title character but allow you to customize your story and looks. They also have you choose a class, but allow you to chose the way your character levels up. Which can greatly alter your game experience when you choose to replay the game.

Then they allow you to upgrade weapons, your ship and even choose how your squad mates level up. You can even just let your squad mates help you in fights or command them who to attack. But to make the game better they add mini games. Which just adds an entire new level of enjoyment to the game.

But the big draw is probably story. The game has a story line for you. You make choices that can affect the way your companions see you. And may subtly affect other aspects of the story. On top of that story you get other stories very much like the KOTOR series does.

In the end the game seems to take the best of the KOTOR series and change it up enough so that you have similarly great aspects. But with enough changes to make the system seem fresh and exciting.

Because you can choose to go in so many directions the game has great replay value. Certainly a game worth owning. And probably should be in any RPG fan's collection.

    What I liked:
    - Graphics - A great overall improvement over Mass Effect 1.
    - Combat System - Much better than Mass Effect 1, it feels closer to a Third Person Shooter now.
    - The feeling of making a difference in the galaxy and in my squad mates' lives.
    - The story.

    What I didn't like:
    - No menu hotkeys: a hotkey for the journal and squad menus were much appreciated in the first Mass Effect. Why aren't they in the second game? Why isn't there any way to add them?
    - DLC is somewhat mandatory: I romanced Liara in ME1 and I was very disappointed to find out I had to spend another 8€ on DLC to be able to romance her again in ME2. Not cool!!!
    - Crashes, crashes and CRASHES: This game crashed sooooooo many times on my PC :'(.

    Conclusion:
This game was just like Skyrim to me: it's incredibly fun to play but OMG it crashes so much :(!
I highly recommend this RPG but only if you have the patience to reboot the game over and over again when it crashes.

My only (minor) gripes is that the inventory and level-up system seems even further dumbed down compared to the first one. A definite con for those of you that like customisation in their RPGs. The galaxy map is also a little silly (and pointless). These however, are nit-picking an otherwise superb game - a game that it probably on my top 10 games of all time. Everyone should play it. Period.

But some sacrifices had to be made from mass effect 2 which wasn't in the previous games. Such as the RPG elements in mass effect 2 are very, very limited compared to the previous entry. But otherwise, the story was interesting as you fight with Cerberus, learning from the previous game, Cerberus was know for their terrorist acts.

Squad members improved as well. They included 2x more squad mates in the second installation as well as 2 old squad members from mass effect 1 rejoin you as well. Not only that you get to have a dedicated mission to increase their loyalty as well as increasing their chances of a romance for some characters.

So overall this game gives a lot more than it's their previous entry which results in a lot more longer gameplay. (Mass effect 1 clocks around 19-20 hours of 80% gameplay completed and mass effect 2 clocks in about 28-30 hours of 90% completed plus 10 more hours of dlc completed at 100%). Although it does remove RPG elements from the first game and looting and limited the amount of weapons and armor plus the mako removed from the game. I think the game is still worth looking at if you liked the first game. This game has many planets to explore as well as an interesting storyline.

So to sum it up... Get the game. You won't regret it.

More of a third-person-shooter with RPG elements instead of a “regular” RPG, the missions, voice-acting, music, combat, and graphics come together for an unforgettable ride. Mass Effect 2 is BioWare’s high water mark and the pinnacle of the developer’s “golden age.” A less than ideal DLC situation tempers the enthusiasm, but only a little.

++ That final mission. What missions you have completed (or haven’t!), what upgrades you installed (or didn’t!), who you assign to certain tasks as part of the mission – the fate of your crew literally rests on your decisions.

+ Mass Effect 2 assembles a fantastic cast of diverse characters. Several return from the first game (like Garrus and Tali), while the new additions all have unique personalities and back stories. Including DLC, there are TWELVE possible squad-mates.
+ The stakes are high. With the rest of the galaxy closing their eyes to the Reaper threat that manifested in the first Mass Effect game, Shepard is the only person with the opportunity to halt the coming invasion.
+ Character missions. While saving the galaxy is well and good, helping your team become focused for the final battle involves the completion of individual “loyalty missions.” Lots of variety here, from pursuing a gang lord through a burning factory (Zaeed’s mission), to exploring the rubble of the krogan homeworld (Mordin’s mission) to fighting the criminal underworld in the backstreets of Ilium (Miranda’s mission), you’ll be taken many places as you help the members of your squad find a small measure of peace.
+ The voice acting is some of the best in a video game. In addition to the return of series regulars voiced by Mark Meer / Jennifer Hale, Keith David, Brandon Keener and Seth Green, the supporting cast includes Martin Sheen (yes, THAT Martin Sheen), Yvonne Strahovski, Claudia Black, Adam Baldwin, Tricia Helfer, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Michael Hogan.
+ Great soundtrack. Jack Wall & crew kept the synth base of the previous Mass Effect soundtrack, but added more orchestra and bigger Hollywood-style heroic themes.
+ Good graphics (Unreal 3). While not Crysis, still some of the best visuals of its time. Low-res textures aside, they hold up well.
+ Ability to import saves from Mass Effect 1. Several of the decisions you made in the first game have an impact here.

+/- Greatly improved combat over the first Mass Effect game. Weapons have decent heft, while individual weapons feel and sound different from each other (even if the damage they do is largely similar). Gone, though, is the unlimited ammunition of the previous game; now we have “thermal clips,” which makes the gunplay much like every other shooter out there. The tactical pause menu is present, and is still useful, as companion AI is still not the best.
+/- The Mako rover (and planetary exploration) is gone. Rejoice, ye who hated the Mako.
+/- Mass Effect 2 is a complete experience without DLC. Several DLC are great adventures (Lair of the Shadow Broker, Kasumi, Arrival, Overlord), but aren't included with the base or Deluxe editions.

    - No, the Deluxe Edition does NOT include all the DLC.
    - The DLC is pricey. Buying ALL the available, non-free DLC will cost $25 on the Origin store.
    - Logging in to EA’s “Cerberus Network” is required to play with DLC installed.
    - Capped at 62 fps. This can be unlocked via a config file.
    - Load times are oddly high.
    - RPG elements are greatly reduced / gone. Skills and talents are extremely streamlined. Using one skill puts ALL of the skills on cool-down, forcing you to create combos with your squad (in the first Mass Effect, using a skill triggered a cool-down for only that skill). The loot and inventory management is completely gone; instead Shepard finds credits, medigel, the occasional weapon and “various industrial bits” (seriously, that’s what some scrap is called).
    - Forced sequence of missions. Unlike the first Mass Effect, which allowed you to play the primary missions in any order, Mass Effect 2 tiers the primary missions in prescribed stages. My understanding is that the game was forced into this format so console players wouldn’t need to keep swapping discs.
    - The famous “climbing bug” can happen anywhere, any time Shepard makes contact with terrain. It has never been patched. Quick-save often.

Mass Effect 2 is a superb sequel and one of the great narrative-driven space adventure games. It would easily be worth the asking price, but the pricey DLC means you should only get it when on sale for 75% off. EA is mercilessly milking a fantastic game because they know they have a true classic on their hands, and they know that people will pay to experience it. *smh*

2/18/2012: People love to hate on this game, but I feel like it fixed a lot of the first game's problems, maybe too well: It really just feels like a slightly RPGish cover shooter. This is not a bad thing, but it's a pretty dramatic switch from the first game. And it made that game, which I utterly loved the first time through, seem really crappy, and that feels weird to say. Mass Effect 2 is nothing if not damn fun (And has a much improved PC port), but it can drag on a bit, has horrendous load times, and yeah, the mining mini-game sucks. But it pulled me in and kept me in my seat in a way most shooters would only dream of. Again, the game's strong point is its writing and in-depth universe. One would hope the upcoming third and quote "final" (and lo and behold, it was not) iteration addresses the flaws of the earlier titles while preserving what I loved about the first two- a true sense of the epic, the wonder of exploring the galaxy and the feeling of power you get from being Shepard.

6/22/2016: I was right about that last bit.

My only gripe with Mass Effect 2 is that Bioware listened too much to the casual action prefering side of original game's fanbase, its nearly stripped from all RPG mecnanics and turned into a standard TPS, a good one at that, but still i woulda prefered a more refined formula of the first one.

Still much of those qualities that made the first game so amazing are still there.

For me, this is the best of the trilogy. Gameplay it's heavily better than ME 1, really dynamic and fun, fast but also complex and deep. I loved the exploration without using the Mako (in ME 1 side quests were very boring) and the characters are very detailed, with specific mission related to them. The last part of the game is a masterpiece.

Mass Effect 2 resumes with pride the path opened by the first game. This sequel is a lesson of how things should be made.
  2. Mass Effect 2 delivers a story that's deeper than what many novelists are capable of, and its action is better than what most Hollywood directors are creating nowadays. It's an addictive, engrossing experience that many gamers will replay over and over while they hold their breath waiting for the third game.
  3. A brilliant mix of shooter and role-playing, filled with great characters, excellent design, lots of action and clever dialogue. It's a shame though that Bioware did not improve the inventory and skill system of the first game, but actually reduced it even more. I really wished there were more customization options, more ways to develop and gear up my characters. But all these are merely small points of criticism, since there is so much to feel and experience in this game. Mass Effect 2 is a thrilling, emotional ride and ultimately every bit as good as its predecessor.
