As the old and battle-weary Leopold, you are forced to fight your way through this desolate and cold bastion of Hell, filled with macabre ghouls, fiendish devils and gargantuan monsters. On his desperate quest for freedom, Leopold encounters familiar faces and slowly comes to realize why he is trapped inside the palace. Is there truly escape from the Beast itself?

But without the dexterity to give its gaming forebearers the same level of faithfulness, it ends up being hellacious for all the wrong reasons.

The setting of the game is fantastic, in a huge, ominous castle that overlooks a misty bridge and a snowstorm.

Its combat with a lock-on system feels similar to the likes of Dark Souls or Wind Waker (which means it's very very good) with dodging, stabbing, slashing and all the like. It feels incredibly smooth, but animations can be a bit silly and sluggish, and fights may seem underwhelming.

Exploration is a big plus for me, as it takes full advantage of the unique art direction and brings out fear and dread in the game. Another big plus is that there's almost no hand-holding, you're expected to go out and venture without the game making it easy for you. This game rewards exploration and guts. You never know what horrific, green-eyed demon is waiting for you when the door creaks open. You never know what you'll find, sometimes coming across eerie bedrooms with paintings of Hell and Limbo itself, or perhaps a large staircase with an imposing, red-eyed statue looking at you as you ascend. My only problem is that sometimes, the art can make places look more empty than expected. Many rooms are just plain gray, with some books or shelves or torches that lighten up the place a bit.

I feel overall that the game is fantastic in its size, its setting, its exploration elements, its art style among other things. Where it fell down was some sluggish combat and empty, dragging areas, but they hardly take away from the immense content the game has to offer.

Keep a spare pair of pants nearby in case of emergency.
