The year is 1947. Lora and Walter Harris move to a farm, which used to belong to his parents. Walter is a writer and Lora is a housewife. Both are quite unsuccessful.

The family is going through financial difficulties. The situation is also complicated by the fact that Walter owes money to people from New York. And although the husband keeps it a secret from his wife, Lora has a suspicion. Moreover, she suspects him of cheating.

As she struggles to make loan payments, she finds out that Walter's publishing house has insured his life. In the event of his death, the insurance sum would be 30.000$. A plan is born in Lora's mind.

Loretta is a story-driven adventure game in which gameplay focuses on choosing phrases in dialogue, interacting with objects, and making decisions: planning the murder and getting rid of the evidence. Killing a husband, trying to cover a crime, Loretta makes a player an accomplice.

Loretta is dark, gritty, and depressing. It’s a tale of a woman repeatedly failed and betrayed by those she should have been able to trust, her back to the wall with limited options. Depending on decisions made, Loretta is also a tale of hope, even if its best ending still delivers noir notes. My only regret with Loretta is not playing it sooner, so if you find this game calling your name, don’t wait a moment longer.

Loretta is a pleasingly chaotic and entertaining romp through the best tropes of film noir – but it’s the player who decides just how dark things get.

Loretta is a fun (and sometimes disturbing) story of what happens when you try to bury the truth. Choices matter, and each comes with its own set of consequences. And while the puzzles and active gameplay are limited, the game doesn’t overstay its welcome. Gritty locations, haunting sound effects, and a seriously messed up narrative make this an adventure I’d happily play again. And maybe next time, I won’t die quite as fast.

Loretta’s story is one of a woman trapped in her circumstances, desperate to escape. It’s also a story about fate, where as hard as you may try to guide Loretta away from the bad thing, events keep unfolding that force you to take more and more dramatic actions and suffer her decline with her. The game was harrowing, but your actions can’t change the narrative that much – she is doomed from the first bad decision she makes. All you can do is stop her from going too far, or let her freefall.

Seeing Lora’s descent into despair and desperation was an interesting story choice since we aren’t playing the usual heroine. Her character has minor changes based on your dialog choices and the ending will change as well so replayability is relatively high for those interested in seeing the other paths play out. I got the winter ending and felt like that was a wonderful way to wrap up such a dreadful story. I clocked in around an hour and a half for my initial playthrough so it shouldn’t take long to see the credits roll for your first playthrough. This is definitely a game to keep an eye out for, especially if you are interested in seeing the story of a not-so-perfect character play out.

Despite some maddening mini-games and a finicky autosave feature, Loretta delivers a gripping tale and chilling atmosphere with stunning graphics and music. Horror fans should check it out, but be prepared for some frustration along the way.

Loretta has a great story which has you follow a villain protagonist with the titular character. While not as intense as being an accomplice to the crime, you control how Loretta acts after her husband’s death. Controlling the story and seeing Loretta deal with the consequences makes you want to see what happens next. It’s a shame that unnecessary puzzles disrupt the story and take away from the game’s strengths, or this could be a game to remember.

A visual novel with a lot of clichés in the story and dialogues, where most of the choices do not change the story in any way. Also betweenA visual novel with a lot of clichés in the story and dialogues, where most of the choices do not change the story in any way. Also between levels, and sometimes within them, there are very simple and boring mini-games that require nothing more than clicking. The mechanics requiring you to sluggishly move the A and D keys around the level to click on an item is very tiring. You can't skip scenes on the second playthrough, it kills the desire to play again. Expand
