Another drop-in-drop-out F2P shooter, except this one is third person and has a wacky asthetic! Loadout probably had some potential at one point, before the overbearing cash shop came into play. As it is now I find it hard to recommend, despite being F2P because of the cash shop, broken matchmaking, terrible map voting system, and a limit of 4v4 for every game mode.

Even though it claims to be "all about the guns, baby!", the weapon customization is limited to four types of guns that share almost all the same parts. There is little room for creativity because of the tech tree system; more complex upgrades require "previous" unlocks to be bought using the in-game currency, Blutes, which are tallied after every match. Although you can test out upgrades before you buy them, you can only test out what you can unlock on the tech tree currently. Once you unlock a part it is permanently unlocked, but only for that weapon (even though many parts are copied across weapon types). This leaves you struggling to upgrade your weapon parts (which gain exp as you use them) to increase their stats (damage, accuracy, RoF, etc.!) as your fellow players race through upgrades and power up their base damage & accuracy while using cash shop exp boosters.

This all leads to another huge problem: Matchmaking. The "Casual" matchmaking, where the majority of the game modes are held, seems to simply slap together 8 players and split them into teams. It does this so haphazardly that the forums were flooded at launch with complaints about parties joining a lobby only to be broken and split between teams at the start of the match. Matchmaking also doesn't seem to care about player stats or skill level because before the end of match weapon levels were disabled, many times you would see players with level 8+ weapons in a game of level 1-2 weapon players. This is a huge leap in passive stats that would take a non-boosted player dozens of hours to attain and leads me to believe that there simply is no real matchmaking outside of the competitive mode.

Loadout is simply another barebone F2P drop-in-drop-out FPS (in third person this time!) that demands you spend cash if you don't want to be left behind. Some will find this amazing and stick with it for months but many others, like me and the rest of my friends, will play for a dozen or so hours, notice all the problems with the game, and just move on.

pretty clean animations, nice art style, if you want any sort of customization on your character then prepare to be milked of your money though. A daily chest that has very limited cosmetic options to unlock that is more of a slap in the face and try to coax you into spending cash, "oh neat, I got a t-shirt that says douchebag on it, right after I got basic grey jeans" So basically every free player is running around in default skin, with all the options would have been nice atleast to pick some basic colors to very them a little.

Guns take ages to level up, then when you do you have to spend a ridiculous amount of "bluprints" to actually take it to the next level. (don't quote me, but annoying if you level all your parts at once, then don't have enough to up them, so they just won't be getting exp when you play until you do)

the game generally is fun and a nice time waster but it feels like it always just turns into a big clusterf*** of spraying rockets and balls of electricity etc, the guns in general seem to sway towards just "aim in their general direction" build styles later on, and the more you play. As you and every other players constantly spams jump and the dodge roll. I like the whole fast free movement aspect, but at the same time it's a curse because it's basically an adapted strategy in these types of games to learn to abuse the mobility.
also there is gimmicky power ups like shields and jump boots, sound cool but just adds another layer of annoying to the game.

with this game, less would have been more.

As an F2P game, I am usually wary of unfair "pay to win" aspects. Luckily, this game is pretty fair. The default weapons are good enough for a level playing field. It seems that at one time it was unlimited and there was some bogus reason why that odd cap was implemented. Unlike Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed, the game stays consistent at 111-113 FPS for me on a high-spec machine. It runs well and does not stutter; it is optimized in my experience at least.

The game reminds me of Halo 3 multiplayer with how I play it at least. I see some players (including myself) jumping around in close combat situations. It is this hectic hysteria that reminds me of Halo. It is also fairly balanced. Unlike Halo though, it isn't a console exclusive and it's free and has butts!

I definitely recommend this game, ignoring that it is free. The fact that it's free (as long as you don't have some kind of data cap on Wi-Fi) means that everyone with a half decent PC can try it. Give it a try.

Using Team Fortress 2's winning formula, this game certainly doesn't disappoint. The gum customization adds originality to the game, and the gamemodes are fun to play, but unlike TF2 a lot of in-game purchases are needed to rank up very quickly, taking away the effort needed to feel like you achieved something in this game.

Weapons are fully customizable without having to spend a real dime on it apart from game money which you earn by battling.
Speaking of battles, they are fast paced, unpredictable and you will start of with an embarrassing death streak after being taken out by so many funny looking online characters with even funnier looking guns. One of the best parts of the game apart from large customization options is that you are able to steal other players guns and experience just how they felt blowing peoples heads off with their personal masterpiece.

Put simply, Loadout is a great game that's free to play, and one year into its release, the developers are still hard at work putting in new features and listening to community feedback.

To say this game is not worth playing would also be a lie. Instead, what is a pretty standard shooter from a distance, is transformed by the near endless customisation options and constant witty comic relief that you find playing the multiplayer. Yes, Loadout is truly a game tailored to the needs of the player and allows everyone to be whoever they want. This said, I was slightly disappointed by the small amount of character models, compared to other games in the genre such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, but this is overturned by the excitement of getting a new piece of clothing in a daily prize and trying it out on your character, whether it be a belt, a taunt, a shirt, some trousers (or no trousers in one case), some shoes or a haircut, it enables you to make an overused, generic blank canvas into your own little master piece. The same can be said for the guns with only four classes being provided for the player to build a weapon around, but when you get into it you'll be hard pressed to find a person with exactly the same weapon or play style as you. This filters into the gameplay which is surprisingly fast paced and if you can't keep up then prepared to be dismembered and scorched over and over and over again (much to the satisfaction of the player now twerking, and yes you can do that, over your writhing, flaming corpse). Another surprise were the graphics. I was expecting nothing more than a few low quality textures combined with cartoonish explosions. But they are all staggeringly good looking, providing that your computer can run it. Some aspects such as the smoke trail coming off the back of a freshly fired rocket could hold their own against some of the best looking games of this generation. The character models, while cartoonish, looked really lifelike with small features such as hair and teeth feeding into this. They are also very flexible while playing the game, allowing you to melee, roll and jump fluently adding to this graphical joy. But the best part of this is the price tag which I am pleased to say is holding steady at £0.00 or for people across the Atlantic, $0.00. So why has this game only got a seven? Surely it deserves higher? Well that's where you're wrong. For as much as I love this game, and I do love it, it has been diseased with a virus that seems to be infecting many decent games recently such as this one. I am of course talking about the dreaded micro-transactions. Now usually I would rate this game much lower on account of this however the only reason that it stays at its quite comfortable rating is that you can only pay for cosmetic items, such as clothing and so on, rather than actual experience. This allows the more experienced and worthy player to trump his adversary who would usually pay into the game and become indestructible. For this I must commend the developers for not bowing as far to the greed of micro transactions as so many other game studios have done. So while the game is not perfect, it does provide endless hours of light hearted fun and it does it for free, assuming that you don't pay to get a cosmetic skin where your genitalia are hanging out. Graphics: For a F2P game I'm absolutely blown away with the graphics. I would like to have a few more advance options to fine tune a few things.

Game Play: I've currently logged 5 days on the game and can honestly say this game play is one of the most fast paced games I've played in a long while.. Do not get the idea of camping in this game or you will die and not have a good time.

Bugs: there are a few bugs out there right now, one dealing with the friends list. Where your friends list just goes away and you have to restart steam to make it work again. Also there is a few bugs within the game where you can glitch through a hill or cliff.

My personal thoughts: I think EoR has provided a great F2P game with a "Play to Win" model. I feel they've done a great job communicating with its users that they are currently working on all of the issues the community is complaining about and have kept the community informed. I feel that this game has massive amounts of of potential. This game had great potential, but was ruined when it became free to play. Making it F2P introduced levels and grinding for parts, making it almost impossible to even think about making the billions of weapon combinations that they advertise. Weapons are also completely imbalanced; only a few very select meta combinations are effective and even used.

To summarize, classic F2P grinding for currency+exp (unless boosters are bought with real money), and imbalanced weaponry creating a meta of 5-6 effective weapons. Still fun and has a great art style before the level curve makes it take several games to level up.

As a shooter, Loadout has a lot to recommend it. It’s fast, fluid, gratifying, varied, slick, and largely unsullied by its free-to-play business model. In other words, no, this isn’t Team Fortress. And, frankly, it doesn’t need to be.
