The key similarity, though – and the reason why, even if I’m disappointed in Lil Gator Game: In the Dark, I can’t say I don’t love it – is that, like Lil Gator Game, In The Dark is a cute look at kids (well, animal kids) making up ridiculous stories and having fun with them. There’s a sense of wonder and silliness that not many other games share, and it’s enough to suck you in and keep you entertained right up to the end of the closing credits.

It’s in the steps of this journey that In the Dark shines, as it delivers a warm, cosy parable about making space for others, even – and perhaps especially – when they find it difficult to accept love.

For all its whimsical offerings, Lil Gator Game: In the Dark finds its true strength in the authentic compassion of its narrative. The villain’s pushy nature and unbending demands stem from a very relatable and vulnerable place. Seeing this, our hero persists, when everyone else has given up, in reaching out to his caped nemesis. When all the heartening action of the game fades from my memory, its uplifting final note will remain.
