Being formulaic, think Heroes of Might and Magic meets Mount and Blade on semi historical medieval Germany.

The tactical combat looks simple but surely it isn't. It is a smart and different take than HOMM series, as you have to act with your units, and move is a consequence of the attack order. Every action you have a series of decision to make and it is very interesting for a long time.If you are an experienced strategy gamer, however, if you don't go for the higher difficulties it could be a bit too easy, and after while it gets a bit repetitive, but until there it is very fun.

The leveling and looting system makes managing your party interesting. There is a nice variety of loot and troops, and simple but rewarding upgrade trees.

The story is top notch, though the storytelling is a bit lacking. Some say it is complicated and really is, you have to pay attention. I would say the story is on par with King of Dragon Pass. You don't have a lot of choices, though, as the story unfolds, but the quality makes for it. The worldbuilding is awesome as well, you really feels like you are in medieval Germany.

At the end of the campaign the game play gets a bit repetitive, though, but is mostly a case of the campaign being too long than the game play being boring. I only kept going for the story.

    Overall, a great game. 8/10

And when I discovered this game in 2012 when it was on Kickstarter I didn't hesitate and backed it with $175 pledge. However, there have been delays and even despite Early Access starting in 2013 I started get worried about my money. I didn't want to play beta, I wanted to have my game. So, today I finished my first of many to come playthrough. What can I day? I am so happy and as amazed as 9 years ago when I played Discord Times. The game took me a bit over 50 hours to beat and these were 50 hours of pure condensed fun.

What I like about the game:
+ Story: it's original, with surprise turns, multiple playthrough and seems like multiple endings
    + Very immersive atmosphere
+ Great original setting, not your typical
+ Quests: complex, fun and not your usuall stupid stuff like kill 10 rats in the forest
+ Brutal and swift combat - while I like Discord Times a lot, the combat there is a bit too simple. This one is about right, better than HoMM anyway. I am not speaking about such an abomination as Disciples 3. This surpasses Disciples 2 by far.
+ Customization of troops is amazing, each can take a helmet, armor, weapon and shield (if can use) plus 4 slots for amulets plus 2 potions. Haven't used potions much but sometimes they are really handy.
    + Amazing music and sound.
    + Beautiful animated backdrops
+ Authentic medieval armor and weapons. I went to Battle of Nations quite a few times and in this game there is no **** fantasy armor or weapons.

There are a few minuses though:
    - No DRM-free version. I hate DRM, from the bottom of my heart. I never bought a game on any DRM platform, GOG is my store. However, this game is not there! Apparently GOG didn't take them. I had to install damn Steam. I couldn't keep waiting for my physical box with DRM-free version to arrive though.
    - Where the f*** is my soundtrack and artbook? I expected to get them at launch. Hopefully devs will figure it out within the next day or two.

Overall though, this game is 10. Despite minor glitches, this release is way more polished than most AAA games. Best Kickstarter game I backed so far. So-so Wasteland 2 and didn't like much Pillars of Eternity - but maybe because I don't quite like RtwP.

10 Forest Kings out of 10.

Still, a solid 10 as these things are really minor. Expand

You continue playing, hoping that maybe it's not over, maybe the game didn't show all of it's potential yet, but no. And then you just delete it.

The worst thing is that you also hope that with new maps comes new story, but again no, all the same.

Such a great game! Beautiful graphics (shading depends on the game's time of the day) , addicting turn-based battles, interesting non-linear story. Princess Celestia is fully excited!

Okay, it's a difficult game, which looks like generic, but it is a original piece of indie art.

What's good: * incredibly crafted sound (actually the first time I hear such a cool sound in a game of this type) * the perfect untypical story, which is combined in a web of legends (like the name of the game - "legends...") * rich tactical opportunities (lost myself in the gameplay!)

Rly Great music, visuals, interesting writing. Combat system seems to be simplistic but once you meet challenging opponent you see there's quite a few layers of complexity there. Actually much more complexity than in Disciples. And huge nonlinear story for many hours of play.

And, btw, full map and scenario editor! Like that was for HOMM 1-3. Hope for free new maps from community.

Weeks ago scrolling for game like Discorded Times, I stumbled across this and what a find it was (by same developers too). I am 23 hours into game and I have to say, this game is very well made.

    Story: 9.5
    Mechanics: 8.5 (for being unique)

Overall I gave it 10. This game has unique battle system and good story line.

Great strategy-RPG game. It combines party management, simple turn based combat, beautiful medieval 3D landscapes, nice histories and missions. Very entertaining

I played it on spanish language and it's perfectly translated. Furthermore, this game has the possibility of create your own scenarios.

    - No fantasy aspects at all or only few like healers (with only limited spells, heal, buff, debuff)
    - Very dumped down leveling of hero with almost uselless skills, I had hard time to choose any becouse all are so bad, that's provide zero motivation to leveling hero or even play (hero does 50 atack and skill add whooping bonus of 2, facepalm)
    - Units are all generic:
    lvl 1 - 45 hp and 25 attack
    lvl 5 - 70 hp and 50 attack ---- so booring
    - There is no magic, items are boring too

For me it's unplayable due to slow paced gameplay, take a quest and then travel 5 minutes in slow motion to get somewere then go back to heal units all in slow motion, very sleepy game and the great combat aka Disciple 2 can't save it.

2 score only for music and combat. I also dislike the German background at all, all names are in German and is hard to remember who is who and who is brother of whatever Olaf, Kurt, any stein or really whatever.

By this slow motion movement they are trying to lengh the gameplay and I feel like 90% of gameplay time I am just walking somewhere.

The premise of the game is not new - move around the map in semi-real time, fight encounters on a hex grid battlemap. Collect loot, level up, eventually get a couple castles, while continuing through the story.

The game takes an unorthodox approach to storytelling - everyone is a bad guy, but does not think they are and rat out their neighbors. This pattern repeats throughout the game where the player is left to decide who's the lesser evil.

Tactical combat has potential for the first couple maps, but after this you will settle into more or less same combination of units, where you train them (from militia to footman to knight). This gets old after a while.

Tactical map rules are quite cut and dry - you can only attack the closest enemy. The AI is still pretty poor, and the game attempts to balance this "challenge" by filling enemy ranks with spearman and pikemen. Seriously, you will see ridiculous amounts of enemy spearmen, guards and pikemen - characters that have first strike ability. They are fairly useless for the player who is forced to attack all the time, but make a lot of fights very annoying and increase grind times as you pay through the nose to heal your troops.

The strategic map action is pretty boring - bandits will recapture your villages or outposts dozens of times, you will go to the same areas to grind the same bandits. Apparently enemy levels up over time, so if you leave some bandits in a corner of the map, they will eventually start to wear plate armor and have warlocks with them.

There are better titles with more fun game mechanics, for example Kings Bounty series, which offers a lot more variety of units and better special abilities, as well as more interesting exploration.

Complains about inadequate resolution, but provides no way to change it. Texts too small to be read, but no options to increase size or scale the UI. Of course, it's a text-heavy game. That's what you get when clowns decide to write software.

Legends of Eisenwald is one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises that we engaged with this summer. Intriguing storytelling, thrilling plot twists and ambiguous morale decisions are wrapped up in an excellent medieval/ feudal environment. The simple yet addictive turn based battle system, the many upgradeable military units and a well built economic system, raise the game’s status to “totally recommended” for the genre’s fans.

A nice turn-based strategy with RPG elements, what scores particularly with the medieval territory and administration of your army. Thanks to this you will forgive it the technical issues and some design mistakes. [Issue#255]

Legends of Eisenwald is missing this elusive, magical "something" that keeps you glued to the screen. Despite that this is a pretty good game that should appeal to fans of Heroes of Might and Magic - they could easily add some points to the final grade. Legends of Eisenwald is a good example of its genre.
