    Left-Hand Path is just as ambitious as it is unpolished. It’s extremely rough around the edges across the board from visuals to sound design, but it packs enough creativity to be worth your while if you’re a sucker for dark-themed RPGs. The rune-based spell system is satisfying to master and the high difficulty level sets it apart from its contemporaries. It’s just a shame that the slightly janky execution holds it back from being even better.

    Developer Strange Company is to be lauded for creating a VR RPG that is lengthy and far more substantial than so many of its brethren. While aesthetically Left-Hand Path can't quite overcome the technical limits of the Rift or Vive, it is built on a magical combat system that is robust and challenging (and occasionally frustrating) to use. Now that we're a couple of years into the their retail releases, no developer has managed to produce that killer app that makes virtual reality systems an essential purchase. That said, games like Left-Hand Path are moving the creative progress of gameplay and storytelling in VR incrementally forward.

    At the end of the day, Left Hand Path is doing something gamers have been clamoring for in virtual reality. It’s a hard, retro- and Dark Souls-inspired dungeon crawler that rewards exploration and doesn’t end after its first hour-long episode. Add to that a number of small touches that show the developer understands virtual reality and what it can do, and you have a game that’s definitely worth exploring, as long as you can get past the too-polygonal art and disappointing animations.
