  • Summary: Action Adventure fused with RPG and Farming elements. Armed with sword, bow and spellbook, fight against a rising darkness threatening the world. Plunder dungeons in search of relics and resources, tend to your farm to make provisions and potions, and take on quests solo, or with a friend.

When Kitaria Fables works it works really well. But when its issues begin to arise, the experience of playing through it can get awfully frustrating. These unnecessary design oversights detract from the game's clear strengths. Regardless, it isn't bad, and given its relatively cheap retail price, it is probably worth giving a shot.

Kitaria Fables is a laid-back experience of item collecting and farming, all brought together by a decent narrative and a responsive action system. Pace yourself, though, because getting the most of this adventure requires it. However, the artificial padding on the gameplay found in the limited fast travel, lack of universal storage, slow-moving characters, and much more causes some confusion and endless backtracking. This won’t replace your love for Rune Factory, but it’ll definitely supplement your craving for a charming adventure.

Kitaria Fables is an action RPG with a failed farming component. Hell, even the action RPG aspect is failed. The dialogue, while cute and child-like, goes on and on with more telling and less showing. On its surface, this looks like a fun kids game, but the punishing enemies and excessive text tell otherwise. I’m not sure who this is for. Actually, I’d say it’s for no one. In no way is this any fun. It felt like work from beginning to end, and I can’t even say that’s because I was doing any farming.

Welcome to Kitaria Fables, the land of grinding for hours without really progressing much at all, whilst this game isn't bad at all, it suffers from being very slow paced through to downright boring in areas. Several key issues are all related to how slow everything is to get around with a huge lack of rapid travel options being the major culprit which feels like this wandering around just pads out the gameplay too much and distracts from any fun to be had, for a indie title I'd say this is an excellent attempt but needs more work and resolving several key issues which hold it back, don't be put off by the negative reviews and play the demo! If you like the harvest moon and rune factory series and don't mind a bit of a slow paced game then this is ideal for you.

The artwork and graphical style are all above par, cute graphics reminiscent of some early JRPGs and passable music that does get a little repetitive after a while, game has good day and night cycles with weather effects such as rain which can basically automatically water your crops. I'd like to see more options, possible romance and basically more of everything because the foundation for a great game is here, just right now it needs some more work to push it in the right direction, in some instances I get reminded of playing games like Ragnarok Online and early cute MMO's, the gameplay style sometimes feels similar.

As a game though, its more of a dungeon crawler with farming and crafting elements, all of which in the beginning take far too long and distract from the main focus which is discovering what the calamity is, and how to stop it which is basically takes the form of the dungeon grind and subsequently gearing up of your character which, once again is a significant grind and without it, many battles are obviously either very boring or mindless with attack >>> dodge >>> attack >>> dodge and repeat, most of the time if you die in battle its simply because of being swamped with aggro monsters. Since you can't move the camera, static foreground images such as trees for instance can sometimes block your view which can result in being hit without seeing the attack cones of your enemies, this can also get annoying.

Chest loot is surprisingly awful, the loot from chests seems to vary especially from the locked chests which can become a HUGE issue because it takes quite a lot of material grinding to make keys, and often you might just get a few ingots back from the chest effectively making you LOSE/WASTE materials in the first place, this is an issue and needs to be addressed for sure, because why go through all the effort to make the key just to essentially receive a small portion of the materials as the reward, case and point opening a gold chest to receive 3 copper ingots as your reward..

Some things in the games 'About' are rather disingenuous to this as well; this is the inspiration in creating an extensive and spoiler-free review. The combat, farming, quests, dialog and environments are the same exact cliches as every other game of this type. Everything felt uninspired and dry. All in all this had a feeling of being an early access game where all major mechanics were present but had yet to be fleshed out. Many games fall into this category, and a lot of them make up for it by being charming or unique in some niche- this game does not. Expand
