    Hostil feels like the bare-bones outline of a survival tale in an alien landscape. There’s enough effort and polish to demonstrate a legitimate attempt at a serious narrative, but it’s disappointingly hamstrung by its own brevity to really be effective.

    I am rarely drawn to point and click games but when I am it is usually because of the story. That is the case of Hostil. You crash land on a planet and have to solve various puzzles trying to escape or survive. It has a nice atmosphere of hope and despair as well as a good bit of lore. The puzzles are pretty easy overall save for one. It is what most would call a casual puzzle game that is almost a hidden object game at times. I don’t say this with negativity, the game makes it work for it. You won’t be challenged by the game but the story is the real draw to it. The ending was a bit vague and could have used just a little bit more explanation but overall the journey there was solid. There is no voice acting but the soundtrack is well done. I mentioned before that there was one puzzle I disliked and it was this music puzzle where you have to listen to a melody and figure out the correct order of notes to play to open a path forward. I believe the developer’s heart was in the right place and it is a nice change of pace from the previous puzzles which are largely figuring out which object to use on what other object to complete which task you need. Sadly I am pretty tone deaf so I found the puzzle simply frustrating even if I can appreciate the effort and originality. The art had a hand drawn quality to it and had a good style.

    I played Hostil on Linux. It never crashed on em and I didn’t notice any bugs. The game uses the Unity engine. I played version 1.06. Alt-Tab didn’t work. There is no manual save options. The game auto saves after each level which aren’t very long. The game uses up 201MB of disk space. During gameplay my GPU usage was 5-11%; my VRAM usage was 539-607MB; my CPU usage was 1-4% and the frame rate was a constant 144FPS. There are no graphics options.

    Hostil won’t blow your mind but it has a solid story; decent puzzles; good music; good visuals and is worth playing through for sci-fi fans or fans of the genre. I paid $3.39 CAD for the game and feel that is a very fair price for it. I finished it in 41 minutes which seems par the course for many.

    A very short and contemplative game. Story is great and comes piece by piece. Quite an easy point and click game. Sound environment andA very short and contemplative game. Too bad it is so short you have to question whether it is a game or not. Plus I'm not that greedy but if you compare price to quality you lose even more than you actually think.
