    One of the best turn-based strategy games made. It keeps you hooked, the game is fun, the graphics aged well, and I have accumulated hundreds of hours into it. Buy it now.

    This game really does set the Bench-Mark for almost all Turn Based Strategy games and they should be using it as reference, period.

    My dad brought this game when it first came out many years ago and STILL to this very day more then 10 years on he plays it almost every day which still amazes me.     The expansion and user created content such as "WOG (Wake of the Gods)" Make the replay value of this game almost limitless with random map generators, tweaks and fine tuning you can really play this game in so many different ways to suit your style.

    My only regret is that HOMM4,5 and now 6 didn't follow suite and build on something that was already so great. Why mess with the mixture when the mixture is already perfect and only needs more flavouring.

    If you haven't played this game before then you won't be able to appreciate it due to it's age.
    To wrap things up, it's quite rare these day's to find a game that will Stand the test of time but Heroes of might and magic 3 is one of them! :)    … Expand

    This game is simply amazing and should be rated one of the top games of all time. It has endless re-playability and is extremely fun with friends. I'm sure that if I counted up the time I've spent on this game, it would be longer than a month non-stop.

    I played this game over 1k hours，and remeber every creature's ablity in detail，HOMM3 so sweet memory for me.Buy the GOG version（including Sod）, its pretty better than HD Remake version.

    Perfect game. I play this game from 6 years of age , now I have 14. If you like strategy you must play
    HoMM III . This is my eight year with this game and
    I do not regret the time spent with this game

    Angels, demons, dragons, magic, dungeons, warriors, and wizards, all wrapped up neatly in a turn based strategy game. The fact that my wife has to tell me to stop playing occasionally is a clear sign that this game is just too fun to turn away from.

    Heroes of Might and Magic III remains my all time favorite game. It is nothing short of spectacular and it really seems like a labor of love. The game mechanics are easy to learn and intuitive. The artistic style is beautiful and fits the game fantastically. And the music is magnificent and atmospheric. HoMIII was built on the framework of HoM I & II, but it is polished beyond what thoseHeroes of Might and Magic III remains my all time favorite game.     HOMM3 is from an era in which games were complete, with expansions instead DLC, one of my firsts games and still installed in all my PCs, a rich mythology system with attention to the detail, you can play it for years and discover new things that you didn’t noticed, I enjoy to do my own maps, or improve it with mods, the fun is endless in a well-done game.

    The pinnacle of HoMM series, the nights spent with this game were best, so much re-playability is amazingly high, just the original has so much maps that you won't spend less than 100 hours with this game. Anyone who likes games, this is must-play totally.

    One of the top 2 or 3 turn-based strategy games ever made.

    Really, its only competition is Civilization and I'd be hard-pressed to choose between them.

    If you're bored by this, you probably struggle with anything requiring thinking.

    Magnificient in every detail except the first part of the campaign. Strategy, tactics and RPG elements in one game blended to perfection.

    Without a doubt one of the best games made EVER. Even as I now rather play the King's Bounty series instead, as it's more tactical focus suits me better, I still have to bow before the game design and production value of this game. Even now (2014), fifthteen years after the game release you can play it and be utterly immersed into the world and gameplay mechanics. It's just a masterpiece.

    This is one of the most fun and addicting games I have personally ever played. The graphics, gameplay, and music have all found a special place for me since I first played it many, many years ago. HOMM V is the only other game in the series I could immerse myself in. An amazing game overall

    it is really surprising that this game has no metacritic review. this game deserves to show itself in top 10 of all gaming history.

    forget the HD version, it has no expension pack and it has bugs in it.

    just buy this games original version and its all expensions. trust me, this is one hell of a good game. even today i still play it time to time.

    After more than 15 years, this is still one of my favourite games on the PC. I played HoMM2 and III, and tried some of the newer ones, but none of the new ones come close to 2/3. This is the game where little details shine, like music, sound effects, interesting maps, artefacts, creatures etc. It does have some bugs, as any game, but many have been polished via community patches. There's also many mods available online since the game is old, and some mods are still being developed (look up Wake of Gods, Horn of the Abyss).

    One of the biggest wishes I have when it comes to gaming and games industry, that the publishers realise this type of game is the long lasting gem, rather than rushed fancy graphics with little time spent into the story and overall atmosphere polishing. I would pick up this game over any other (except maybe HoMM2) in the series - any day! The good times it has brought me while playing hot-seat with friends before school, then we don't go to school (I know, naughty!!) and then play until late hours while sipping coffee and eating pizza, cookies...Oh, the memories! :D And you know what? I still run the game quite often and play it either alone vs A.I. or get some friends to play a quick map with me. And I'm 31.

    Possibly one of the best games ever made in my opinion. And certainly the best heroes game of all time. The thing I would say about Heroes 3 is that basically it was almost the perfect tool box. Aside from the official stuff, you were free to produce whatever you wanted to. So basically the game came down to one of level and campaign design.     I love this game! After so many years and I still love it! They don't make great games as this anymore. It is so sad. All the sequences were pretty crap. This game is awesome! I highly recommend it.

    Literally the best turn-based strategy game ever made. It's only been expanded upon by a fantastic community dedicated to modding and adding content. I have easily, without exaggeration, dumped over 10,000 hours into this game in the last 21 years. It is THAT good.

It has a great game mechanics that are easy to learn and have also a lot of depth for you to master. You are a commander of an army of various units or creatures and building / developing structures in your stronghold. Lets start with theA true classic and probably the best game in the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise. It is a fantasy turn base strategy game with base building. It has a great game mechanics that are easy to learn and have also a lot of depth for you to master. You are a commander of an army of various units or creatures and building / developing structures in your stronghold. Lets start with the strongholds. There are various factions with individual strongholds and units. Per round (= 1 day) you can build a structure or upgrade an existing requiring gold and resources. The structures let you recruit a fixed number of new units at the start of each week for an amount of gold. Stronger units require more structures before you can recruit them. Upgrades let you hire stronger versions with better stats and/or abilities. For example upgraded archers have 2 shots per turn and upgraded griffin have unlimited numbers of counterattacks instead of just two (Other units have just 1 per turn). This is just the tip of the iceberg as there is far more like special effects for example. There is also a building that creates income, defensive structures, a market place or special buildings with beneficial effects unique for each type of stronghold. The mage tower is especially important. There you can learn spells (and buy a spell book). It can be upgraded 4 times (Not in all type of strongholds as some are limited to 2 upgrades). Each upgrade gives access to higher level spells. However you only get access to a fixed number of spells per level (Can of cause learn additional spells in other strongholds mage towers). Never underestimate the effect of spells and a huge income. Both are keys to victory. For the exploration or battle part you maneuver your character including recruited units over the map (Range depends on slowest units, terrain and learned skills). Your character is not a unit you can use in battle. He is the commander or general. However he / she is far from useless. Your attribute-points are added to your units fixed attributes. This made them more powerful and at high levels even low tier units can outclass high tier ones without this bonus (Warning also applies to enemy commanders units). Also you can use spells which can be devastating especially at expert levels (skill at max level needed). There are various items you can find that boost your attributes or skills. Important is that you capture mines / woodcutter hoods and find deposits of materials as these are needed for upgrades of your strongholds (Reach them and you get a fixed amount of resources per day as long as no enemy reaches them afterwards). As you level up you can learn skills. These can vary from doing more damage, high morality (chance of a second action per turn), better spells like for example expert level buffs / debuffs effect all units instead of just one (Devastating effect and I underestimated this by far) or higher moving range up to special skills like diplomacy that lets you recruit units sometimes instead of fighting them (Not available in battles with enemy commanders). The available skills are semi random as not all skills are available to all characters or at a certain level (You can chose a level up with a limited variety). Also all skills come in 3 levels (Initial and 2 upgrades). Each upgrade gives more benefits. There is more depth to this as all characters have a special bonus, a class that determines their attribute growth / skills, mixing units from different strongholds have effects and some skill combos have impressive results and some more. Fights with different commanders and siege battles are turn based. The fastest unit starts and the slowest has the last turn. I think I stop here. You have different scenarios with multiple maps and a connected story. You can take your main character and often additional characters into the next map. This is crucial as you should develop these as far as you can (Remark: There is often a level cap to prevent you from being to powerful (But still powerful). I like the style, setting and overall story. Together with the gameplay it was as immersive as enjoyable. It has the addictive gameplay of a truly great strategy game. The graphics are a bit outdated but because it looks or is hand-drawn it will never be truly ugly. The video sequences are the same. Not on the actual level but still great especially from ascetics standpoint. The soundtrack was never boring and enhanced the atmosphere. Overall this mixture made me come back to the game from time to time. It is still as much enjoyable today as it was back then. I recommend this as it is a timeless classic and one of the best of its time and genre.… Expand

    One of the best games ever created. So much replayability and very addictive. I strongly recommend installing the HD+ mod (free). Fixes tons of bugs on newer operating systems and fixes some crucial balance issues and bugs, as well as offers the possibility to play turns simultaneoulsy in multiplayer!

I'm not would've exposed it as a "truly classic game of all times", I would've rather said "It's a piece of art, without any doubt". Because for me is more than just a game of my childhood years, it's something much more bigger.

    One of the best turn-based Strategy-Games of all time. Still today, over 20 years after its initial release, it is still an active game with tons of playable maps. If you consider buying it, take the version from GOG because it comes with all expansions and you can download a HD-community-patch.

    One of my favorite games of all time! The music is incredible! The variety of playable races and units is wide and rich and each has its ups and downs; the story is great too! The campaign is super exciting and exploring maps and fighting difficult enemies is very satisfying!

    A definition of a perfect game. It's not just nostalgia at work. Although I can crudely estimate that I haven't played anything longer in my life than HoMM III. The art style still holds up. The mechanics and gameplay are timeless.

    H3 was brutally addictive when I was a kid in 2000's . :D The best game ever made in my opinion.
    The campaign mode was hard at the end.
    In particular, the Unholy Alliance S.o.D.
    I can recommend if you're into strategy games.

    Incredible game. Still holds up over two decades later. Spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on thus game. And my grandma bought it because she liked the music.

    I remember playing this game as a kid, and it brings back memories. An amazing battle system, with lots of replayability, not even mentioning the map creator and additional content(Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death, maybe there's some more I missed). The game deserves a 10 out of 10.

    This is best turn-based strategy for me. This is pinnacle of all might and magic games by game play and even graphic is still good even today. I recommend this game to everybody who likes strategy games.

The game is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG, and probably the best game from the genre. You conquer towns, recruit armies collect artifacts and do objectives like finding treasure hidden by using obelisks or defeating the other teams. After a few battles with other heroes or monsters, you eventually gain levels and can spend your points on skills that upgrade your movement range, things to help you with your strategies, your army taking less damage/doing more damage, increasing magic damage and more. The game never gets old and you got not only the main campaigns but also hundreds and I mean HUNDREDS of maps, levels, and one of the best things of all a map editor!
    Another awesome thing is multiplayer, you can play online with lots of online options like direct IP and a few more or Hotseat, so grab some friends and share a few laughs together as you battle with your army to death to see who is the strongest!

    Each game sets out to be something. And it fails at least at anything trying to accomplish that. Game is great if it manages to keep that failing at minimum. This game has it at zero.     The best game if it comes for casual turn-based strategies. It was magnificent back in 1999, it still is in 2016. This game hasn't aged a day. The benchmark of the series, and rightfully so. The modding community is still active and will be active at least the next decade to come.

    Its very important to point out however, that the expansions are highly recommended, if not a MUST, because its just not the same without those. As much as I love the game, playing the basic/vanila version of it, isn't as good/charming/appealing. Missing maps, missing my favourite castle, the Confux, missing some items,heroes,units,mechanics, etc. And by some I mean A LOT, but some realy major ones and a ton of minor ones. With the expansions however its EPIC.

    MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION:
    is to get the user/fan made expansion on top of the existing, official expansions. Its called "in the Wake of Gods", aka "WoG", dubbed as "HoMM 3.5" . It makes the game so much more interesting,deep and rich, that its very hard to describe, but this is what makes it Legendary in my opinion in the truest sense.

    Some may hate what i will say right now, but I think "Wake of the Gods" is WAY better then "Horn of The Abyss", aka "HotA" (another user/fan made expansion mod)

    The mod provides/contains:
    - TONS of settings, in game mechanics and features (ie: you can set that every enemy gets bonus units, base of your army -> an army of 80-ish peasants, got 216*6 of tier 7 mixed units, based of my army. Makes boring fights interesting -> can still get a solid amount of exp in the late game as well!); aka. WOG options.
    - new units (including 3rd upgrade option/variant of already existing units. Ie: green dragon -> gold dragon -> diamond dragon, OR Firebird -> Phoenix -> Sacred Phoenix, etc...)
    - new items and item sets
    - henchman (super elite) unit (of your choice, stronger as it levels)
    - commander (2nd hero-ish?) unit (can equip items, fight, cast spells, level up, die and can be resurrected)
    - army units can have various buffs and military ranks (similar to gaining exp.)
    - new dwellings, (map) buildings (not castle), quests, and a lot, LOT more, that i'm honestly lazy to list/include here. The 5000 character limit might not be enough tbh.

    Just to name a few:
    war machines can now stack and be stronger; catapults can attack units; your hero can move and fight without an army; additional skill slots (>8); custom battle rules (ie: everything, or just some specific units, have double attack, and/or breath attack, etc...the list goes on!

    IMPORTANT NOTES!:
    - Everything mentioned above is customizable to your liking. If you want none, some, all of it, you can! It's up to you.
    - Earlier I mentioned another user/fan made expansion mod "Horn of The Abyss", which I even compared to "Wake of Gods". The 2 mods are in no way compatible: no WoG features are available when playing HotA, and vice versa

    The very best example, that graphics is not everything! It has a very dated, but at the same time kind of old school/charm to it. Sounds, spot on. And the overall game, the feeling is one of a kind!

    VANILA (The Restoration of Erathia): 7/10
    with Expansions (Armageddons Blade) + (The Shadow of Death): 9/10
    with user mod (Horn of The Abyss): 10/10
    with user mod (Wake of Gods): 11/10

    Last, but not least, some side notes.:
    I'm not a might and magic fanboy. In fact this and maybe HoMM 5 the only ones I liked and could recommend. Never tried the black and white HoMM 1, but tried everything from HoMM2. Later games aka Might and Magic Heroes....X. Stay away from 4!!! It was an interesting concept, had a few potential in my opinion, but in the end it was a major **** up **** where, for example, the pikemen literally moved as if they've **** in their pants.

    Sadly the new/current generation of kids/"gamers" #wanna be true gamers, wont/cant appreciate this game and may never be able to. Its not fancy, not shiny, no Michael bay booms and graphics. Its not holding your hand, not dumbed down, oh and no 3d CGI AAA cinematics. You actually have to READ OMFG.

    There's not much I can write about this game to expand upon the already many great user reviews. This is the definite best game in the series, a classic that never gets boring, and I've put hundreds of hours into it. One of my favourite games of all time!

    Awesome game, with only several flaws. The only part i dislike is the somewhat repetitive maps in campaign and the repetitive easy battles verses resouce building guards. But overall pretty good.

    Well.... this game was different.... it felt like I was helping a intellectually disabled person progress to the next objective. Really it felt like the game was only half finished. Some parts were okay... but it's still honestly a let down. I don't understand how this game even left the studio? I think some people did favours to get this one through.     Overall: I do recommend this game for old school fantasy strategy gamers.

    Graphics aren't that great, story is boring, and combat is horrendous. Combat is really where the game falls down, more than anything. It's clunky, all about rolling everywhere, and doesn't really have any strategy involved.

Like in Civilization you say " just one more round" and in the end you played the whole night. There are a lot of very interesting fantasy races to play. You need some time to discover the differences, so there is a lot to do.     It is very time consuming and there are some mechanics, that are a bit frustrating: Heroes can flee, so the CPU flees and comes back with another army, just to reconquer your cities...Ah yes, CPU is cheating :/
    And you will lose a lot of time to transport fresh units to your main hero. Did I mention how much time of your real life you lose?    … Expand

    There are few games which get better with time. I have started map after map alone, then skirmishes with friends, then I downloaded maps, then I made maps, and then I discovered mods that expand it to the absurd. Today there are 2 mandatory mods the HD for high resolution widescreen screen, and the last HERA as a mod manager to install easy any mod.

    The standalone homm3 is great and still rocks even in 2020. But with the Horn of the Abyss fan addon it is even better, and it's free. There is plenty of custom fun maps too.

    Absolute classic, the game aged like good wine and its still amazing to play today. Play it solo, local play or if you know how to setup your networking over internet. The depth of the game with all the available races and map builder that is very intuitive to use that you can give to a 6 year old and they will be able to use it is simply fantastic.
