The combat is ugliest as i ever seen in any games. Maybe it's possible to play it on console but on PC its just unplayable. It is very frustrating than you even switch to the easy combat mode but can't win the fight again and again because the control is piece of crap. The idea of the game is good but implementation is crap. I'll give it three points for the effort.

The puzzles where a bit repetitive and I wish for more variety and improvement.

The developers made a great job and clearly have the skills to improve and make an even greater game if they have more budget. Now is this game for everyone? Yes and No. I'd say definitely give it a chance its not hard only joy.

I feel that this is a game that everyone ought to play.
The story gets full marks for me. Rarely in a video game story do I see this much character development and such remarkably well plotted pacing. It starts you off on a fairly simple concept to follow, slowly introduces the changes, and winds up painting a beautiful picture of a wounded but strong woman's journey through despair.

The story gets full marks for me. Rarely in a video game story do I see this much character development and such remarkably well plotted pacing. It starts you off on a fairly simple concept to follow, slowly introduces the changes, and winds up painting a beautiful picture of a wounded but strong woman's journey through despair. Very uplifting for those who struggle, and believe me if you haven't been there, you will. We all lose everything eventually. This story reaches down to the core of what it is to be human and to be mortal and its beautiful.
The visuals are beyond gorgeous. I've got a pretty high end rig so your mileage may vary, but ultimately you can't deny that they use visuals with nothing short of pure excellence. They really leverage graphics technology to set a mood by distorting the camera, layering overlay effects, and playing with lighting effects in a way that really shows off their expertise. I've worked in Unreal before so I kindof know how they're doing it and they must have had a field day. I'm surprised the game runs with all the **** going on in the screen at any given moment. Animation was also stellar, especially Senua. There are a few people reviewing the game without finishing the story and I feel like those people missed the entire point of the game before buying and their disappointment makes sense. The story is amazing and if you aren't getting the story you're missing out on basically everything.
The puzzles are taking a lot of flack in the negative reviews and I guess I'm sympathetic. I freaking loved all of them, but they take some time and some work to solve until you start getting the hang of it. For me that really made it work. I was impressed by the technical aspect of the puzzles because so many of them involved re-arranging 3D objects into 2D shapes which is not something I know how to do as a developer or would have thought to do so it is fascinating to me. I also enjoyed the door puzzles a lot as they made me feel like a reality wizard solving them. It is also worth pointing out that each type of puzzle represents an aspect of delusions common in many forms of mental illness, from ascribing mystical meaning to mundane objects, to hallucinations, etc. They are really well represented, and to make a puzzle that is both accurate, challenging, and fun is a big deal for me, I hate puzzles.
Combat also is getting panned frequently and while I'll agree that the same enemies keep showing up and combat isn't hard, I wouldn't say it isn't fun. Its beautifully animated and very well telegraphed. I'm normally **** at blocking in fighting games and I could do it here and it felt super good. My go to move for a while was dodge but eventually you get a charge up sword and if you experiment you can learn some pretty sick moves that will make you feel unstoppable. They also do a good job of gating your combat experience so that you start off feeling fragile and vulnerable but end feeling like a warrior goddess. It fits so well with the story. They also release a steady stream of different enemies throughout the game, so I didn't find it so much stale as others did. Considering the game is short and combat isn't really the focus, I don't really think it needed more than what it got.
The environments were out of this world. I really enjoyed everything, from the murder river to the burning villages, creepy woods, stormy coasts, Creepy crypts, dark catacombs, fetid swamps, and nightmare realms made up of convulsing burnt corpses and acid lakes. What a very metal trip.
Hellblade is an experience, and I'm grateful for it. I recommend taking a rainy weekend day or a day off when you have no other obligations and playing it straight through. Take breaks if the puzzles start to get to you, and don't forget that most of the spiral staircases have an UP and a DOWN. And when the light's go out RUUUUUUN.

Hellblade is also a story about domestic abuse, mental health, social stigma and their consequences to people's lives. It is about showing support, compassion and understanding to those who suffer.

Hellblade is a computer game that blends historic events with real stories and experiences revealed through the testimonies of people who suffer from psychosis, supported by Health Neuroscience experts from the University of Cambridge.

The story takes place during a period of bloody war, at the time Vikings invaded Britain. The main character is a young woman, who suffers from a severe form of psychosis; her name is Senua. The player takes control of her actions and experiences the world through her eyes.

Puzzles and combat rely on fairly repetitive mechanics and navigation in the 3D world is quite restrictive. However, the story is bold and full of surprises. The game implements "permadeath": Senua gradually gets weaker, when badly injured. Even though progress in the game is saved between major events, if Senua dies before the end, all game progress is lost and the story has to be restarted. In practice, the game adjusts the difficulty level to the skills of the player, making it an achievable challenge!

In the role of Senua, Melina Juergens' acting is fantastic and the scenery is amazingly detailed. It's an impressive project artistic work!

It took me 29 hours to complete the story. This includes pausing the game several times, to think twice what I've just heard or seen, or just take a break! It's quite an emotional experience, not for the faint hearted.

    Highly recommended.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very very slow movement, it makes me mad. The puzzles are horrible, no need for logic, just see the sign and that's it, Uncharted series does it much better.
Now I know that this game had a very small budget, and honestly, the result speaks for itself. The graphics and sounds are good.
One thing is actually very very brilliant, but SPOILER ALERT for that.
So the game tells you at the beginning that if you die too many times, you are going to lose your progress and you can start your game from the beginning. And it made me feel afraid and nervous every time I had a fight, I was thinking of what happens if I can't finish this game at all? If hours of gameplay just disappeared. Well, turned out, the permadeath is not real, they just say it to make you feel how Senua feels. I think it is genius. That's why I gave the game 1 point higher than I originally planned.

Right off the start you get the feeling it'll be a more a experience type of game than action packed ride, with emphasis on very well done cinematographic cutscenes and story telling. Also its a great achievement from audio and visual standpoint alone this game completed with a nice original soundtrack, knowing Ninja Theory is no triple A developer at this point, its quite an achievement. If there's anything that poked my eye, it was the passive sky box, i hate that developers dont go the extra mile to have active sky box with cloud movement for maximum immersion factor. Game boasts some amazing motion and facial capture strengthened by strong performance by main actress who turns out is a developer of the game herself, the motion capture tech was much showcased before the game's launch and it really becomes an integral part of the game's success, not just a gimmick. Story being built around mental disorder problems of Senua also woks out quite well, much of the time leaving you thinking about what you see in the game whether its real or they're the manifestations Senua's mind is making up. Game world while lacking high resolution textures in many places overall looks quite beautiful with great lighting, weather effects backed up by great art design that successfully captures the post viking invaded celtic setting.

Where i had some issues with Hellblade were its gameplay designs. While i actually walked, not ran, through most of the entirety of the game to capture and get immersed in its world, i also couldnt help but feel that there wasnt anything really to do while these segments lasted compared to Enslaved or Devil May Cry, the developer's previous 2 games, its just, take in the pretty world and move on. The puzzles while backed up by the research developer's did on what people with psychosis experience to ensure their place in the game, felt more like padding from modern gameplay perspective, theyre nothing that ruin overall experience for the worse, but solving them didnt gave me any real sense of satisfication. Then theres the combat which is just about servicable, it simply lacks depth and fun factor from previous Ninja Theory's games like Enslaved or DmC, the lock on/swap taget system also doesnt work out as well as it should. As i said before, i know it was not intended to be a action game first, but knowing the developer's pedigree, i was expecting more finesse in that department.

I still dont get it why Metacritic lists a 7 as mixed score for video games, for me that counts as a good game rating and i do wanna remind that in my books Hellblade is a good gaming experience worth having.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a strikingly high-fidelity game; the graphics, particularly of the main character and some of the enemies, are quite impressive. Unfortunately, the beauty is only skin deep; this game is a slow-paced slog with poor gameplay.

You play as Senua, a mentally ill young warrior woman who is travelling to Helheim – the Norse hell – to battle Hel for the soul of her dead lover. She has voices in her head, constantly talking to her – encouraging her, telling her what to do, whispering about how she is going to fail or how she should turn back, or even telling her that everything is all her fault.

This game seems to be very impressed with itself in its depiction of mental illness, and indeed, it is pretty well-executed on the whole – the whispering voices both work to reinforce the protagonist’s psychosis, as well as to help direct the player towards what they should be doing.

And the game is very graphically beautiful – there are a lot of nicely rendered enemies, and Senua herself has a very impressive character model. That being said, I feel like Senua might be entering in on the uncanny valley – she looks kind of wrong on some level, despite her highly realistic appearance, and there is just something a little bit off about her visually which is constantly unsettling.

Unfortunately, this is about where the game’s pros end.

The gameplay consists more or less of four things – walking through long corridors, solving environmental puzzles by lining up environmental features to make “runes” that unlock doors or piece together objects in the environment, walking through gates to reveal some change in the environment, and fighting a series of battles against pretty samey enemies with not-so-great controls.

The environmental puzzles are vaguely clever – walking around to line stuff up in the environment is a vaguely interesting idea that I’ve seen a few times. Unfortunately, it is only vaguely interesting, and the game has a very large number of these puzzles. Most of them are not particularly interesting, either – oftentimes, you’ll simply do a series of simple tasks, following through to the end of the path to get the assembled piece. Only on rare occasion does this require much in the way of actual problem solving, and after a while it becomes very old hat.

This is not assisted by the protagonist’s slow walking speed – the character, even when running, simply does not move very fast, and this is constantly wearing, as navigating the environment is something of a bore and it only further stretches out the already slow-paced game.

The combat is quite bad as well. The protagonist and their enemies move pretty slowly on the whole, with only a few moving at any real speed – while Senua herself is pretty slow. She has a weak slash, a powerful slash, a kick that can stun enemies (useful against the enemy with a shield), and has a “slow down time” ability that also serves to make some enemies tangible and thus possible to attack.

Unfortunately, the combat is very, very bland. Most of the combat time is spent fighting pretty samey enemies – there’s only five types of base enemy, and you end up fighting them quite a bit. Unfortunately, there’s not much to mix things up there – two of them are pretty similar to each other, and none of them are particularly interesting to fight, as most of them are just defeated either by dodging an attack then counterattacking, or simply kicking them to stun them and then attacking. Due to the general clunkiness of the system, the various fights against the normal enemies feel extremely similar to each other. The slogginess of the combat is particularly evident towards the end, as there are two long combat sequences towards the end of the game which involve killing large numbers of these enemies back-to-back, and it is quite dull.

The combat simultaneously also feels difficult and easy. Difficult because the enemies will often attack you at the same time, and the rather clunky controls makes it hard to position yourself in the way that you’d really want. But it also was easy, both because of the power of the slow time ability and simply because it seems extremely difficult to actually die. In theory, a few hits will kill Senua, but in practice, I could always stand back up after getting knocked down – in fact, I only died once in combat outside of the two battles in which you *must* die in order to progress, and I’m not really sure why I even died there.

There are three real boss fights in the game, but of them, one felt rather similar on the whole to fights against the normal enemies, leaving only two which were really distinct in any meaningful fashion. They were okay, but neither felt great, and the general slow movement of Senua made them feel kind of slow and tedious.

In short, this was a neat idea whose execution bored me.

You shouldn't play this game if: You're in it for the gameplay. You enjoy technical challenges to your skill-level, you enjoy building characters in a complex game system or you just don't care about storytelling at all.

This is a real gem in the art of narrative game-design where the focus in on the visual and not only the textual which is refreshing to see.

Senua's Sacrifice focuses on internal narrative like many indie game titles these days but has a very modern graphic look and powerful soundtrack to support its story about panic, pain and psychosis. The game is around 10 hours long which is perfect length for a game like this that doesn't have sandbox worlds to explore or character creation and levelling to establish an evolving gameplay experience - the mechanics you start out with are more or less the same you end up with.

The incredible story and talent of the protagonist are what will carry you through this game and stay with you long after it's done. There really isn't enough good things to say about Senua as a character or indeed about how she's acted. She feels real and intense without losing credibility as a fierce warrior, her mental... issues are credible, unpleasant and sometimes eerie to play through. She's equally easy to sympathise with and admire.

The gameplay mechanics in Senua's Sacrifice revolves around simple but solid mechanics shifting from spacial puzzles to melee combat and back many times. The combat, while not amongst the most challenging of its kind, feels natural and flows well. It won't challenge a seasoned Witcher or Dark Souls veteran but it works well enough to not feel stale. The puzzles, as puzzles tend to do, can frustrate you if you missed some minor detail somewhere and get stuck but they're never unreasonable and the game helps you along very nicely if only you listen to all of the helpful (sometimes...) voices at your disposal.

However, the narrative is the jewel in this game accompanied by stunning visual arts and a terrific soundtrack. Senua is probably the best female hero-protagonist we've ever seen in gaming so far. She's got a simple, bold ambition - to save the boy she loved - and she travels to Hel to do it. As with many such titles, the game explores her personal history and background along the way and she faces externalised version of inner demons as tends to be the case in such stories, but she does it with tenacity, audacity and without compromise. When you control Senua, she feels vulnerable and powerful at the same time and it's easy to want to help her, not only out of sympathy but because she's inspiring and strong.

The Norse/Celtic setting works well enough - the Norse legends are recognisable to a Scandinavian and the world has a credible harsh and desolate feel.

All in all, Senua's Sacrifice doesn't try to do anything no one arguably hasn't done before, it just does it more beautifully, with superior acting and visuals. Where many narrative-focused games have drifted away from the film elements to a more minimalist, simplistic aesthetic, Senua's Sacrifice uses all the modern tools of visual storytelling to tell a memorable and inspired story.

The gameplay is just great. I've played on high difficulty and it was just right. There are a lot of unique puzzles with changing the world surroundings and illusions which added just in the right amount.
I'ts also a very good mixture of in-game shots with shots filmed on camera. I didn't see that experiment in other games. Also there are no pre-rendered scenes as far as I've seen.
Some of the downsides for me is that it's relatively short, variety of enemies is not good enough and it's linear so there is little replay value for me.
P.S. I would personally recommend playing it on HARD difficulty because it's.... just right. Even not that challenging as I expected it to be. On normal mode I would probably not die or die a few times.
P.P.S Also, I've played with ps4 controller on my PC. With keyboard and mouse was not that comfortable. So if you have a controller I would recommend to play this way.

Don't come to this expecting Dark Souls. Don't come to it expecting the Witcher. Come to it as a thing all of its own and you'll come away from it with one of the most powerful gaming experiences you'll ever have.

The story is wonderful, told mostly through the voices in Senua's head and past trauma relived as parts of her quest to rescue her lover's soul from the gods of the Norsemen.

The graphics and environments are incredibly immersive - you can practically smell the wet, rotting wood, feel the sleet and rain on bitter winds, and in the rare moments of sunshine, you can share the relief and joy that Senua feels.

If you let the story and the character take you with them, the puzzles make sense. Finding patterns in the environment, walking between different versions of Senua's reality and finding your way through dark areas by sense alone, all feel like a visceral part of Senua's experience.

The combat isn't massively difficult, but it is fluid and responsive. There are relatively few enemy types, each with their own tactics to beat, and the challenge comes when you get them in waves of different combinations, switching tactics and targets on the fly.

But really it's Senua herself that's the main feature. Perfectly rendered, perfectly acted and perfectly animated every step of the way, you come to genuinely care about this damaged, vulnerable slip of a girl as she advances through her hallucinatory, metaphorical quest against odds that she cannot possibly beat. By turns she goes from determined to frightened to fierce to doubtful to angry, despondent and implacable, and as her moods change so does the world, all of it narrated by the voices in her head which become the voices in your own head.

It's an incredible experience that is far greater than the sum of its parts. It is intelligent, respectful of its subject matter and doesn't treat the player as an idiot. It's a game that will stay with you for a long time after you've finished it, and it'll make you think about a lot more than solving its puzzles and working out its tactics. It's a heart-wrenching and heart-breaking experience.

A genuine work of art, both visually and as a piece of literature. I know how that sounds, but if you take Senua's Sacrifice for what it is you'll know exactly what I mean. There really is nothing else like it.

I would urge anyone interested in this game to take the critiques it receives with a grain of salt.

Many are disappointed by the combat system's spam-one-button-to-win nature, but the intimidating nature of the enemies, the commentary of the voices, and the perma-death system made battles an intense and enjoyable experience. You also see a lot of hate for things like the camera positioning or the imbalance between gameplay and cutscenes. These didn't bother me at all. These are stylistic choices that game devs have the right to make. In a time where we can begin to question what makes a game a game, these complaints become senseless.

    Play this game.

I believe that if you made this whole thing a movie rather than a game with all the cutscenes, it would make a treasure.

    However, gameplay-wise, it's a garbage.

I know many people won't agree with this and even will try to roast me, but that's that. I feel insulted by being forced to solve puzzles (during which you don't have to use your brain btw) to proceed in the game, and run through the levels at a very slow speed which can eventually make you get a cancer. I liked the combat system, I mean, it's simple and since it's not the point of this game, it's fine. But I was super tired of stupid filler fights with the same enemies over and over again, which really added nothing to the story itself.

Anyway I could complain more but the eventual idea here is that this would make a great 2-hours of game if I didn't have to spend hours on solving 'puzzles' and running all over the map again and again. Everything else, the story, the narrative, the graphics and especially the sound was totally amazing. Kudos.

Senuas Sacrifice is a psychological action adventure game with a dash of horror elements.
Here you play Senua, a Pict warrior battling her way through Helheim to rescue the soul of a man that loved her…
But you’re not on this journey alone...
The games focus is mental illness…
And I feel the game does a great job of this... of filling you with constant anxiety
as you journey you’ll hear voices…
    These voices never leave you...
They’re constantly going, whispering the way you should be going while at the same time telling you to go back, they’ll encourage you and discourage you, these voices were probably my favorite part of the game, and because of them I played the entire game with headphones…
letting them whisper to me as id fight and solve puzzles…
this is a very linear game that takes around 7 hours to complete,
You’ll be going through this gorgeous world and frequently be stopped by a gate…
On this gate are symbols... its then up to you to find the symbols in the world to unlock the gate…
Turning this into a perspective puzzle game...
The screen will start filling with the symbol when its near, you then can focus to find it, and then it’s onto the next symbol…
And to stop this from getting tedious the game will add different elements to each section, such as portals that will take away a section of an area, or add to it, fix a broken bridge or staircase..
Constantly keeping the game feeling fresh and new...
Along your way you’ll run into lorestones that will tell you the story from Norse mythology.
These can be cleverly hidden as well giving you incentive to explore…
My least favorite part of this game however is its combat...
There as boss battles which I actually really enjoyed...
But I didn’t enjoy the combat encounters with smaller enemies…
the combat at first feels cinematic, you have a regular attack, heavy, and melee to break shields, you can block and doge, and you’re able to focus to temporarily slow down time...
But the game just throws way too many enemies at you to defeat in these thankfully rare moments...
The multiple enemies don’t necessarily make things hard, especially thanks to the voices telling you to look out before an enemy can strike you…
the fights just drag on for too long most of the time killing the pace and emersion of the game…
The rest of the game however comes together perfectly…
You’ll feel all sorts of emotions, good and bad while playing this game, and there really is a beautiful story to be told here…
No matter the type of gamer you are, you owe it to yourself to pick this on up.
    I give Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice

I can just copy & paste this from previous reviews.

Interesting enough story, looks nice enough, but very little gameplay worth mentioning. Combat is a snoozefest once you learn a set of actions to take for each different kind of enemy. The puzzles, if you can call them that, mostly just involve running around trying to match patterns against the world you're in, over and over and over

Oh, I was waiting for this game a few years... To find out what a disappointment it is.

    The pros:
Really good looking places to visit, good graphics, and a story that never existed before.

The cons: too much talking, repetition of enemies, repetition of puzzles, really one dimensional way of fighting.

    Brilliant idea, executed bad.

Lots of work was put into making sure the textures and models were clear and realistic enough that they could even be passed off as being taken straight out of a movie. The high production value is also not something you see everyday in a video game.

    STORY
Hellblade talks about an exile who lost the man she loved and is having difficulty coping with that reality. Broken and suffering from psychosis, she embarks on a lonesome journey to "defy the darkness" in an effort to bring him back from death.

Her visions get increasingly worse as she heads deeper into "Hel", defying the voices in her head who constantly tell her to give up on her love and to move on. In a way, the story plays out similarly to the stories of the first few God of War games.

The story can be somewhat confusing at times due to the use of Norse mythology, but if you take the overall plot of Senua's suffering at face value, it becomes understandable. The goal of the game is to immerse the player into the world of demons that Senua travels through.

    GAMEPLAY
This game is primarily an adventure game with added fighting scenes and puzzles. Puzzles are a primary factor of this game and they act as trials required to progress the story. Some of the puzzles are difficult while some are straightforward.

Permanent death exists in this game if you die too much, but you are explicitly warned about it in the very beginning. If you fear the permadeath aspect, lower the difficulty in the settings. I personally haven't found it to be a big deal though, since the game is pretty generous with dying and I think each new area you reach "resets" your lives.

The combat appears simplistic due to the limited actions available and the predictable enemies, but it doesn't mean you can blindly fight and expect to win. You most certainly cannot just "mash" the attack button. Not knowing when to dodge or block an attack can cost you a life. Don't expect it to be a walk in the park as the enemies usually gang up on you in groups and come at you in waves.

Difficulty by default is set to "Auto". This means that if you die too much early on, the game will scale down its difficulty immediately. This is likely where all of the other reviewers got their notion of "easy" from: They've died too much. If you want to have the full experience, manually set the difficulty higher yourself.

Hellblade is a largely linear game. Weapons and items don't exist in the game, nor are there any side quests or even people for that matter. You'll be doing a lot of walking and listening to the story unfold in her mind. The game does not have an "NG+" after it is over; you simply play through it once and then your save file is erased for you to start over, if you so desire.

    SUMMARY
Not much can be said about this game without spoiling it. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to experience a unique story about psychosis. You won't regret spending the time to play this game, but don't set your expectations too high since the combat is not the main factor of the game.

The game is somewhat short. You should be able to get around 7-10 hours out of the game, assuming you don't die too much or get stuck on the puzzles for too long.

I'm giving this game a very generous 9/10 for being a one-of-a-kind experience. No other game will ever mirror this one with its high quality cinematic execution and focus on mental illness.

I've been a gamer for over 30 years and what I like has definitely changed over the years. What I look for in a game really changed after playing The Last of Us. A game that tells a great story, gets you emotionally involved in the game and has you actually care about a factional character. I wouldn't have thought that was possible. Ninja Theory did a great job of doing exactly that for me. Yes it's a slower pace and you have to work more to understand the story(pay attention to the lorestone and the voices) but if you do it's a great story. It's a very difficult subject but they pull it off very nicely.

The combat is simple but it was satisfying for me. Because of the permadeath or threat of it made for some very intense combat. Combine that with the visual and audio excellence it made for a very satisfying game for me, especially for 30 bucks!

I understand why this game will not appeal to some but it makes no sense to hate it especially just because people like me love it. For example I find most other games boring, especially most shooters but I would never give any red reviews but because it didn't appeal to me.

In the end if you don't mind a slower pace, care about story and character development with combat being just part of the game not a majority, give this game a try. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I have.

I think the game would be worth more if everything else wasn;t so token. The combat is stiff, repetitive

What shocked me most is watching the featurette after playing. They described how sufferers of psychosis can often feel paranoid, disoriented, and at times even nauseous. I thought back to playing the game, and recalled the longer I played in a session the more I felt these feelings creeping up on me. I recalled times arguing in my own head with the voices, insisting they're wrong to convince myself to do the right thing and progress forward. I recall trying to piece together what parts of the story were "real" and which weren't, but how can you really be sure? The studio put a lot of work into ensuring the experience was as authentic and genuine as possible, and it really does show.

Sorry but as someone who has dealt with those issues and still does the game didn't remotely resonate with me, the whole idea of it is clear they want to use the mental illness angle to sell the game alone rather then selling the game on the game itself, it is the same reason they call it an "independent AAA game" which is an oxymoron.... it is just a boring game with mechanics u've seen over and over already, repetetive easy and pointless, it might LOOK nice.... but it being a game isn't really necessary it feels like the gaming aspect was an after thought when realising it should probably just be a movie or something... and not really a great one at that either. It looks beautiful is the best thing I can say about it but everything else the gameplay and attempt at using mental illness as a selling point is kind of ridiculous "we spent alot of time with mental health professionals" good for you it doesn't mean you understand mental illness you didn't study it you just asked for the basics and then ran off to make a game.

Honestly I don't mind that I seem to be the odd one out here as everyone has already fallen for the idea that this game is about and will do alot for mental illness when it isn't remotely true and only someone that hasn't dealt with it would think otherwise. But im rating it based on 2 things, graphics and gameplay, so 10 for graphics 0 for gameplay and mechanics, the mental health issue isn't even worth rating it on because in reality it is none existent.

With poorly responsive character you ending up going again and again and again and again through the same fight sequences over and over again cause game returns you to last save before the fight.
Stop it, it's dull, mind numbing and boring...
The combat in this game is redundant in first place... It's a tacked on feature to please the "average" (CoD or Dark Souls) gamer but it does a very poor job on it.

If you want a challenge and a combat experience then go somewhere else.
If you want a reach and interesting story yet you patient enough to suffer through forced combat scenarios then by all mean try this game.

It has a bit of a bad start, but after first boss the game is getting really good. Gameplay is very diversified, there are lot of aspects, logical, action, combat, even some thriller/horror parts. It is also fully independent, DRM free, half of price of "AAA" games that aren't even playable in first months and are usually "synthetic" and have no emotional or intellectual value. I consider this game a huge success. Hate and rants from reasonless or soulless people are even making it more so. This game is breathtaking at some points. Especially on PC (I played on GTX 1070). I don't really need to say much, you can see for yourself on Youtube

    Gameplay: 9/10
    ==========

The fighting is elegant, satisfying, and snappy. It gives the impression that it's too simplistic, but due to the fact that there is no tutorial, you will keep discovering new moves as you go.

The puzzles are hit and miss, some of them are extremely satisfying, and some are just meh!

    Story: 8.5/10

The story is very interesting and at some points will keep you on the edge of your seat. But the ending is not well explained and could take you a bit to understand it.

Simply amazing. Voice acting , music, sound effects, etc... are top notch. Again, you can have a listen for yourself on youtube as well.

I realize that the aggregate score should not be 10/10, but because this game was made by 16 people and on a limited budget, I think we should all support it, so they could pave the way to more high quality indie titles, like this one.

But it doesn't stop there. Their main character was purposely made to be incredibly ugly, like it's extremely hard to not look away when you see her face, it's disgustingly ugly and it's just like with Mass Effect Andromeda, apparently it is politically correct now to make your characters butt-ugly. She doesn't even look like a female, at all. Also, I'm training to be a psychologist, and I can safely say the game's interpretation of mental illness is naive at BEST. A person with psychosis would not die as a result of their hallucinations like Setsuna does frequently. Their would be no plague crawling up their arm. You can't try to mimic a real life mental illness and make it fit along with your fantasy mythology, it just doesn't work. You will regret buying this game. You would probably even regret pirating it too.

They could have little things to fight instead of the same creatures over and over again and the puzzles could be a little more challenging and on topic such as maybe digging a grave and putting the bones back in the certain headstone, something other than just looking at things. BUT like I said, the atmosphere more than makes up for it and Im only an hour in. Im not bashing this game by any means, just a tad bit linear at times so far.

Also, the fighting is super easy. The villains could be a little harder to beat maybe? But who knows, maybe it gets harder as it goes? Im sure it does.

I give it an 8-9 out of 10

Fans of heavily intense action or fans of loot are advised that this game "could" not be for them.
This is NOT an RPG in which you have to find tons of equipment scavenging through huge maps to explore, this is NOT a pure hack 'n slash game, is an "adventure game" in which you journey along Senua, the main character, guiding her trip which is composed of environmental puzzles to solve in order to progress in your journey, enemies to fight, with an (for me) intuitive, immediate, intense, balanced, responsive, visceral and very satisfying combat system, flavored with truly amazing animations.

Aside from a single pattern in the puzzles the game presents, which is recurring often, and maybe another one you can face in few instances, the game always presents you different approaches you need to take in every situation, this means that in one part you could need to find your path in one way, in the following one you'll need to look for something else, puzzles involves mazes, even if not overly complex ones, to some extent there is a bit of stealth, there's a bit of time travel, there are intriguing boss fights,, it's a good mix of various intriguing game mechanics.

As Senua, the main character is a female Celtic warrior suffering of psychosis, you'll not have a HUD guiding your journey, instead is present a mix of visual/acoustic hints in the form mainly of voices in her head, which sometimes can tell you the truth, some other those will plainly lie at you, or hallucinations which can usually prove themselves very helpful in guiding your insight, the game often tries to trick your mind in every way possible, that's a fascinating way to replace a nowaday outdated HUD system, which is possible due to its perfect integration with the main character mental status
    .
From a graphical and acoustic standpoint the game is simply astonishing, it's highly advisable in this case to follow the game hint to play it with a pair of headphones for the best experience.

There are collectibles in the game under the form of lorestones which will tell you pieces of Norse mythology, useless to say that collecting all of them "may" grant you some kind of a reward.

All in all I found it to be an extremely balanced adventure game with the ability to awe you AND give you the chills in many situations.

For what it is, in my opinion it well deserves a 10 out of 10.

The graphics are astounding. I kept rotating the camera to look at Senua's face, to watch her ultra realistic face and expressions fueled by the amazing performance by the voice and motion actress behind it.

The combat is not very complex, but it's gritty and feels very real. In fact, the game brought Senua's emotions so close to me that I actually felt her anger at times and slashing monsters became even more satisfying.

The lengths that the devs have gone to to accurately convey mental illness and allow the player to experience it so realistically is applaudable. At times I felt I was going insane along with Senua as I heard those voices whispering in both of my ears like they were with me in the room, while painfully sifting through the emotional roller coaster of the unstable reality her mind is put through.

On the bad side, most puzzles were easy to figure out but required lots of running around and backtracking to get them done. Also there's one area that causes framerates to significantly drop even if the rest of the game plays smoothly, and even lowering settings doesn't make a difference.

There are snags: weird instances of poor level design, chiefly. But overall, the game radically overshoots in areas that I merely expected to be good. The graphics are an obvious point, but sound is phenomenal (and headphones are essential, or you'll miss out on the 3d binaural effects which cannot be replicated by any other speakers). The swordplay is remarkably well done. I thought it would be serviceable, an interlude between the exploration and the story beats, but it's genuinely great; I can only think of one game that genuinely does this better.

The acting is beyond any performance I've seen in a game yet. It's part and parcel of the careful research into psychosis. The use of this theme was one with which I expected to have problems - in the history of games, Alan Wake is about as good as it gets for the incorporation of mental illness into a hero's story. The performance of Melina Jeurgens and the actors who play Senua's voices comprise a huge step forward in acting standards in games, and the description of Senua's experience is truthful and respectful.

Yes, it's only a 7-9-hour game. It blows my mind, however, that people would happily snap up an average but longer game in preference to one that pushes the limits of what a game can communicate. I'd rather have the game that beams beauty from beginning to end and sets a new standard for tomorrow's games.

The movement speed of Senua feels slow initially after other games, but you get used to it and it suits the game, although it made traversing some of the larger terrain puzzles feel tedious early on.
I left the difficulty on auto, and found the fights challenging and exciting, but not too punishing. Pretty well perfect for me. I only died half a dozen times all up, but there were a lot of close calls! some of those fights are intense!

Probably the most immersive game i ever played. I would give it a honest 8.5/10 but I'm giving it a 10 to balance out the zeroes people are giving. This game is a slap in the face of the giant greedy publishers, for the sake of the game industry i hope this game is a success.

One of the best gaming experiences I've had I've had in years. This might not be for everyone or the simple/weak minded as the theme of schizophrenia and psychosis is no kiddy approach, but I applaud NT for daring to try this and succeeding! Great price as well and well worth it, especially since it's a self published game. Expand

If you like games with deep story, amazing graphics, interesting puzzles and having the opportunity to play something different than Call Of Duty, Assassin's Creed or FarCry then give it a try. It's not a hardcore game, you will beat it easy but as I said it's not about the fights or the smashing buttons is about the story and the settings they put in front of you.

For me, best game so far this year.

No se necesita más que una pequeña hojeada para poder saborear esta pequeña obra de arte. un contenido espectacular, una temática de puta madre, visualmente extremadamente generoso, y como si fuera poco auditívamente perfecto

It's a non-game that takes itself so seriously you can't help but laugh. The very slow walking simulator bits are broken every once in awhile for some toddler-friendly version of third person melee combat, and some chimp-level puzzles that will blow your mind. Oh, and there are whispering voices that give you hints and/or taunt you. So profound.

    I'm a sucker for everything

I'm a sucker for everything Viking/Nordic, but even I can't stomach this tripe. The fact that it's getting such high scores across the lolmedia is the icing on the cake. What a joke.

The graphics are pretty garbage - screen is smeared by every filter under the sun, 10x over, to mask substandard asset quality. The camera/fov is smushed too close to the character. She looks like Spoony. It's that bad. Tumblr approved and Neogaf GOTY 2017.

    Muh videogames as art.

I am giving this game a 9 only because it is a bit of a walking simulator.
In terms of story and atmosphere, it is amazing in every way, hands down. The 3D sound in the game with headphones is phenomenal. Trust me this game needs to be played with headphones. Graphics are awesome and crisp. Well optimized on PC. Fighting is surprisingly fluid and tense. Specially fights with bosses.

This is an amazing game, but it's not a game for everyone. The pace is definately slower than I expected it to be as Ninja Theory, creators of the outstanding Heavenly Sword, is known for giving fans fast paced action games. Exploration and puzzle solving takes a lot bigger role than I previously thought, but I did not mind as some of my favorite franchises like Uncharted or Tomb Raider have plenty of those as well. But the reason why this game is so great is because it is still different than the upper mentioned games, as a matter of fact it is very different from any game I ever played. Our hero, Senua, is mentally ill and that plays a vital role in the story and also how she sees the world. And it is a frightening and disturbing world, filled with violently killed dead bodies, scary wooden statues and there are these constant noises/voices in Senua's head that makes just walking in the woods crazy as well. The setting is superb, it is based on Celtic and Norse mythology and it is very unique. There is also NO HUD at all on the screen, which is awesome! No mini map, no crosshair, nothing, it is just you and the environment. I love it!
When the action heats up, combat is as good as it gets. The over the shoulder camera works excellent and Senua is a master with the sword and also have some devastating kicks in her arsenal. The fighting scenes are my favorite parts of the game, it is superb.
The voice acting is also stellar, and the graphics are gorgeous. If you wanna just hack and slash this is not your game, but if you like exploring, a great story and some fun action, then you will enjoy this for sure. A must play for me.

The point of the game is an experience and submersion into the mind of someone dealing with psychosis. It gives an intense sense of trying to understand someone dealing with this affliction and has been heavily researched by the developers Ninja Theory. I grew a much greater sense of appreciation for this game after watching their short documentary on developing it and the accompanying research that was put into it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEfUajzJv5U). Judging this game for combat focus is almost like doing the same for a visual novel, or like judging the walking dead point and click adventure for lack of combat. Combat is a good way to detract slightly from puzzles to not make the experience too monotone and linearity is executed incredibly well to really show the adventure/path that Senua is taking on her vision quest. I can not recommend this game highly enough. It is also a new and great focus that the developers took to give awareness of mental illness to the player and I respect them for it. Expand

Puzzles and combats are not the greatest and much easier than it seems but it is only 7 hours of playtime so game ends before you get sick of it. Some complain that it has no tutorial but if there is tutorial this game will be extremely boring....

Nevertheless, even if I enjoyed the game, I can see why some people hate this game.... If you are fast paced action adrenaline rushing Michael Bay explosion type of guy, do not play this game. It will rot you out. I like to listen and read the lore of the games I play but dam some parts I really wanted to skip.

I... I don't know. The game looks amazing, sounds amazing but it's so slow. First impression of the game, first 30 minutes or so, is walking and exposition and when you think you'll finally get some action... nope, short fight, walking and puzzles. Not at all what I expect from Ninja Theory, not at all. More than that however, the puzzles ruin the pace of the game for me, but perhaps it'sI... I don't know. This is a matter of my expectations, more than the game itself, but I really think that it's not a game for me and I feel a bit misled. A linear puzzle game with elements of fighting is how I'd describe it. Or "that game with a really stupid title" (for a second there I was sure it's a sequel to "I am Setsuna", based on the title alone). Overall - meh... seen worse, seem better. Expand

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice takes us on a long road to hell paved with contemplative yet stressful scenes, and an impressive respect for Norse myths and legends.

Hellblade can disappoint you with repetitive puzzles, linear structure and the fact that it was stripped down to most basic, indispensable mechanics. But Hellblade is not about gameplay. It’s about darkness and fear and despair. The emotional weight of this game is unbearable. Forget about The Last of Us, To the Moon or Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Hellblade is soul-crushing in a way I never thought a game could be. Remember Requiem for a Dream? That’s what Hellblade does to you. I will NEVER forget Ninja Theory’s masterpiece. [10/2017, p.38]

If Heavenly Sword had an opposite, it would without a doubt be Hellblade. A dark, gritty, psychotic, atmospheric hell-ride through the forest of insanity. It looks great but plays like a gloomy record. Not everyone will enjoy this dark adventure. But what it does, it does great. Maybe even too great, if I may say so.
