This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hell girls is one of those Bejeweled based games in which you fight monsters by making the right combination of gems. A concept straight ripped from the Mirror games. It feels cheap and gets repetitive way too fast. Levels are pretty much all the same, the same 6 second soundtrack that loops forever and unbalanced game play.

I have to say that the fact that you can combine gems in any way (vertically, horizontally or diagonally) does redeem some quality, it got chests which you can destroy or collect for some extra loot (but it hurts you when you fail to get it..) and you got three different Hell Girls, each with a specialism (melee, endurance and magic).

The graphics in Hell girls are not that great, it looks like a tech demo out of 2008. The music soundtracks are quite nice, although the 6 second loops, like mentioned before, get irritating quick.

The big reasons I do not recommend this game are the difficulty, balance and grinding.

You can upgrade your Hell chicks, but it requires insane amounts of resources. Only when I got to the end of the game, I could upgrade all three of them to level 10 (15 is max). This means, playing earlier stages over and over again and only receiving 1100 green resource thingy after every big battle. This takes many and many of your precious hours, and I for one am not dedicated enough to sit trough that.

The game gets way too hard and frustrating in the later levels. I know that games get harder when you progress, but even with almost maxed out skills and gear, the Hell Girls will not do much damage. There are specific enemy types (I think three) that have a “very high Armor rating”. This way, you do not hit more then 14 damage with a insane combo, while that stupid thing has almost 630 health. And off course, they hit you with devastating force.

When you try to heal yourself or gather Armor, the gems for this almost do nothing. You combine 12 health gems, and it returns 130 health out of 1900 you have. It feels pointless, even with all the skill book upgrades.

Then there are the game breaking bugs that almost killed the little fun I had with the game. Two times, my cursor could not click anything in the battle. Not on the gems, not on the skills, I clicked in Limbo. Of course, this was when I almost won a perfect battle. Another time, there was no possible combination left on the board, but the game did not reshuffle or reset the gems. This was also (of course) when I almost won a glorious victory.

And to top it off, of course I played this game to see some unclothed female individuals in the 7 screenshots the game offers after completing levels. But they are censored (need obscure path somewhere on the internet) and do not offer anything interesting.

In general, Hell Girls has little to offer and is only good for some quick achievements.
