The game is quite a lot of fun but there are so many things that pull it down from being as good as it could be. I want everyone to know that this game has so much potential but it just throws it out the door with all it's flaws.

The good: It's better than other virtual card games I have played and it's free..
The lame: Most cards in this game are exactly the same and it's usually easy to read what your opponent will do next
The bad: This game is extremely luck based even though it's a card game it takes luck to a whole new level
The ugly: There are multiple characters you can play as that have different abilities and some are completely obsolete while others have extreme advantages.
The Horrid: The Arena (draft mode) is yet again VERY luck based and you get to choose a character out of 3 random choices that usually suck compared to the rest and people can get the overpowered characters already giving them a HUGE edge in the game as well as getting God-like cards that make your deck completely useless. This is very very sad because it's beyond better than draft mode in Magic the gathering, etc. but you have to pay real money or in-game points to play and then just get completely screwed over with a crap character and crap cards. (the character choice being the worst)
The Worst: Completely Pay to win

Hearthstone is fun. Unquestionably the best free game I have ever played on a cellphone. I have been playing for a few days now and I haven't encountered anything that I've really hated yet, in terms of balancing issues. And I haven't paid for a single thing.

I played a little Magic (my friends always kicked my ass through the wall), but Hearthstone -- which lacks some of the complexity and therefore fun of Magic -- is definitely friendlier to new players. Unlike Magic, you build your decks to a character class instead of a land type, which is actually a great twist. (I miss accounting for land in my deck builds though -- it's a little simple this way). Playing a rogue feels rogue-y, thanks to the special, class specific cards and abilities you have, like backstab and a card called "run" which lets you draw 7 (!) cards at once which can absolutely change the end of a match. Mages can do ridiculous nuke damage. Priests get crazy heals. It will probably feel familiar to World of Warcraft players. And -- this is a particular stroke of genius on Blizzard's part -- these class specific cards are easily some of the most powerful cards in the game.

Using only the starting decks, I've won about 60%+ of my games, and even though the game requires that you win 30 matches (you get 10 coins every three matches you win) to be able to buy a pack of five cards using in game money, there are three things that really make this okay: 1.) You can earn 10 starter packs of five cards each (with at least one rare card of better than average attributes) just by playing all the classes in the game until you get all their starter cards and beating all the computer opponents and playing online -- where you don't even have to win to get the cards 2.) there are daily challenges that only take a couple of games sometimes if you can win and will net you at least 40 gold 3.) The Arena.

(I've only gotten a few of the booster packs, too, since I was just having fun. And I still win a lot -- you have to remember though, a lot of this game is luck. It's like playing poker or something, in addition to understanding how the cards work together and when to play what. Needless to say, it's a ridiculously good game to play every day.)

The arena is -- for a free game, again -- absolutely nuts. It's so f'ng brilliant because what it does is it gives everyone access to the entire breadth of the games possible cards and therefore complexity and depth of gameplay while only requiring 150 gold (again, a booster pack costs 100 gold, or 30 matches won, and the arena is free the first time, too.) Everybody enters the arena under the same conditions: choose from one of three random classes -- so, not really for casual players, since there are 10 classes and they all do play very differently, when you play to their strengths -- then choose 30 cards by choosing one each from randomly presented sets of 3 cards. Then fight and win as many matches as you can before getting a reward based on how far you got.

You also get three lives, and you don't have to decide to "cash out" or play another hand and risk losing your rewards, which is nice. You just get as far as you can.

I only won one hand in the arena, but the game still gave me a booster pack and 40 gold. (I don't know how frequently you get booster packs this way though, it looked like the prizes are random too.) So it's worth playing and you won't feel like you're getting crushed by "pay to win" players. If you're decent at hearthstone, you can get a lot of play out of it without really paying anything.

Which is why it's a great game. You can either spend money, or you can play better. But I often win against people with plenty of rare cards, and I've only been playing a few days and don't have anything special. You can even do fine with Blizzard's pre-built decks (just make sure to finish winning against the computer or other players to get all of a class's special cards like the ones I mentioned earlier). And building decks is enjoyable.

It would be fun to have rare cards, but it doesn't stop me from having fun -- or winning. Which is how it should be. Good job Blizzard...

9/10 free to play cellphone game
8/10 overall game, due to some needed complexity.

Also, uh, good job Wizards of the Coast. Haha.

This game is not for casual players at all.
As a new player you will find yourself first grinding for a day or two VS the AI just to be able to get a playable deck and the measly 7 boosters.
You will then find yourself with only two options casual or ranked, BOTH are EXACTLY the same, people in ranked and casual play the EXACT SAME DECKS, so you will find that no matter what you try you will hit a wall of net deckers and realize the ONLY way to do anything is to PAY up the nose.
You will also find the range of cards to be very very bad, I have not seen a card game with such bad range, even the indie apps have a MUCH MUCH better range than this game.
You will find that you are not playing Vs. another player or their deck, you are playing against the range and the game itself.
When you are beaten you are not beaten by the other player, but by the horrible range.
This game would be SOOOO much better if they fixed range and added more play styles.
The boosters themselves are way too expensive for the amount you get as well.
This is a 100% money grab game given to you by the merger of activision, because of activision blizzard is now a low quality developer who will be trying to line the pockets of activision CEO's instead of making decent games.

At a first glance, a superior CCG, as it succeeds in combining very simple game mechanics with a lot of charme, attractive and really different classes, permanent updates and a solid amount of depth, as no other game does.

After the first euphoria, however, it gets clear that the game suffers from a lot of downsides as well:

Players are pushed to spend money, and therefore, average opponents have very strong cards, against which it is hard to compete, even on the lower levels and unranked play.
Be prepared for LOTS of frustration and unfairness, if you choose to play this game for free, or anything below, at the very least, 100 Dollar.

Additionaly, randomness plays a bigger role in this game that it should. Too often are games decided by certain, game-breaking cards, lucky or unlucky draws or uncontrollable effects (f.e cards that deals x to y damage to all enemies, cards that attack a random character...).

Then, the small card-pool leaves very little room for individualism, which has lead to a pool of "standard-decks", that you will find over and over, and that players with ambitions will need to use to reach higher ranks.

And finally, the balance is suboptimal.
First of all, does the second player get a significant advantage: not only does he get to choose between four starting cards instead of three, he also gets a card, that costs 0, grants one mana and counts as a spell!
And then, no matter how good you play and how well your deck is prepared:
If you are unlucky enough to face certain, usually legendary cards and are not in the position to deal with them immediately or finish the game within the next round, you will most likely lose.
Examples would be Archmage Antonidas, which creates a fireball (costs 4, deals 6 damage) in the players hand for each spell he casts, inclusing those generated fireballs, or Echoing Ooze, which costs 2 and creates a duplicate of itself, including all buffs, at the end of the turn.

Those downsides dont make Hearthstone a bad game on their own, as the game has to offer a lot as well. But only for those, that are in the comfortable position to build a deck thats strong enough to compete with every class and level...

Finalizing, this could have been the best CCG of all time. In its very core, there really is an outstanding game. And if you get to the point where you can build yourself a high-end deck you really like, and only then, immense fun, extreme challenging gameplay and endless amounts of replayablity await.
Thats also the point, where farming stops feeling like a neverending journey of stress and suffering, and begins to feel rewarding. You will get to love to get awarded, and to increase your collection, just by playing.

Until you reach that point of comfort, however, you will learn to hate this game from the deepness of your heart. Playing will feel like work, progresses will hardly be noteable, you will get stuck in ranked play fast and other players will trample over you with their high-budget decks.

Ive gone through both phases and talk by experience.

    So, do i recommend Hearthstone?
If you dont plan to buy yourself into the game, this game doesnt have much good to offer, will annoy you much more than it will reward and i seriously recommend to skip Hearthstone and every other F2P or P2P competetor and play a CCG with no or little P2W aspects.
If you like CCGs and are in the position and willing to spend a good amount of money into this game, this game is definitely worth it, will offer a good cost-benefit ratio and will reward you with a well amount of pleasure...

These are essentially 2 factors that determine the outcome of any given match: chance, and how much you have spent for card-packs. The result is a win-ratio of about 50% against comparable decks (in terms of invested money, or to a much lesser degree time). The optimal next move is pretty much given at all times, only determined by, you guessed it, the luck of the draw.
Against decks that are "boosted by cash" however, those chances dwindle.

I have played this game for over two months, it is addictive, but the game mechanics are just not good.
It throws you enough bones to keep you going, but the outcome barely ever up to you, except for the money-thing that is.

The presentation and the actual game interface is actually the best out there. The problem is in the design.
While you learn this game, it is a lot of fun. However after that you realize, that you will have to pay a lot of real money or grind for several months to be able to compete even at mid ranks. Even that would be acceptable, but unfortunately there is way too many overpowered cards that will turn a game that you were winning into a game where you lose suddenly and badly.

There are area of effect cards that will negate any kind of advantage you had. There are cards that will reset the health of the heroes. There are cards that will steal your most powerful minion. There are cards that will turn a lowly bad card into an invincible monster.

After a month of play you will realize that this game is only about luck and overpowered cards. To make matters worse, there are only 2 ways to play this competitively.
Arena is a luckfest where you are offered a set of cards and must create a deck. Half the time you are offered really bad cards. It is all about who gets the better cards when making the deck.
The other mode of play is ranked play. Here, the ranks are reset each month, so every month players with several legendaries are mixed with total newbies and mid-range players. Totally unfair. There are so few ranks, that it is impossible to tell apart a rank 20 game from a rank 10 game. Many people on rank 20 have insanely powerful decks. You just cannot compete or feel good about your "skill".

Yes, there is also casual mode, where you can feel good beating up total beginners, but you may also face the insanely powerful pay2win decks in casual too.

The skill ceiling in this game unfortunately is in the basement. It is all luck and expensive cards that determine the outcome.

    AVOID.

Reading through some of the user reviews, I don't really understand the negativity towards the in-game purchases for this game. I look at this game with the same eyes i used to play Magic: The gathering with. Growing up i was never able to play Magic for free and to be able to play this game for free is AMAZING. Kicking down money into something I enjoy not only helps my decks but it helps the developers that made the game. I don't see a problem with that. In fact I think it's a great model for a game like this. Growing up I spent hundreds on booster packs for magic without the ability to work towards "free packs." On Hearthstone I can, and that's infinity better for my wallet :)

Hearthstone is a great game. It's provided me with countless hours of fun, and it's worth every penny I've put into it since beta (which includes another $20 I just put into it last night). It's crazy to me that a game this polished, and this well rounded could be given away for FREE and still have to deal with unwarranted negativity.

Congrats to Blizzard. They make good games, Hearthstone is by far my favorite.

My favorite thing about the game is that is gives the a new "quest" every day (up to 3 simultaneously), which sets an arbitrary goal of some kind (winning matches with a particular class, playing a set number of expensive cards, etc.) and provides a reward for completing it. This encourages occasional play, and the player has the option to scrap a quest and free up a slot for a new one if they get one they don't like. I really enjoy having little goals and markers for when I might want to stop playing.

    2. After you have almost entirely bought a lot of strong cards, carbon copy the most successful decks (as about 90% of people do already anyway)

There you go, that is primarily the game in a nutshell at the competitive and productive level.

    Want to be creative?
You will lose 90% of your games and make no progress when even winning gives you the equivalent gold of a lump of coal, so you need to win a LOT to have enough "coal" aka gold of value for anything (think an entire coal mining enterprise for a deck would be about right).

Want to not buy a **** of decks?
Even if you carbon copy the best freebie decks, you will still lose a lot of the time to other people who carbon copied the other best decks, but also have better cards then you, and keep in mind you are just copying a deck like tons of other players, why not just have a bot play the game for you. I mean honestly what the **** is the point?

So are you prepared to lose a lot since you didn't buy cards then? Are you prepared to lose a lot since you didn't completely copy a competitive deck then? Unless you are insane of course not.

Hearthstone in a nutshell. Give Blizzard your monies kids!

For those that think a "pay-to-win" system is okay because of in-game gold, think again. The rate that you accumulate gold is SO incredibly slow, that it'd take you forever to gather as many cards as some moron who just threw $300 at it in five minutes. There are also bugs on the Mac version, which have existed since beta. Maybe if they spent more time balancing the game and fixing bugs, and less time designing legendary cards to sell, they'd have a good game.

But since many of the quests are like this "Win 2 matches with hero X or X in PvP" sometimes its just impossible. The quote "Worthy opponent" that you get everytime you get an enemy is the biggest joke of all when going for quests like this with a hero on level 0.
Matchmaking as a new player is like showing up to a gunfight with a rubberknive. While you sit on your basic cards which have nearly 0 impact on the game your "worthy opponent" pulles out one legendary after the other or other extremly powerful cards that need to be unlocked first and crushes you like an insect.

Cards could be obtained through buying card packs - for game currency (100 gold ) or real currency. Game currency could be obtained via daily quests - 40/60 gold + 30 wins would provide additional 100 gold ( first 1000 gold could be earned through onetime "achievements" ). Which means around of 1 pack per day or via fight on arena which provide you with 2 packs per day at least for additional 12 games. Which translates into 2-4 hours of play everyday. On average one in five packs would be epic card and one in 20 packs would be random legendary card. However, since many cards are belongs to specific class a chance of obtaining specific card is very low so deck's building strategy revolves around random cards or you could transform cards into "Arcane dust" at very low conversion rate e.g. one specific common card costs 40 points while result of conversion of common card is only 5 points, one pack in average converted to 40 points, in order to buy specific rare card required 100 points, in order to buy specific epic card you would need 400 points e.g. 10 packs while legendary card is equal to 160 packs. So in order to built some average deck you would need to spend about 160 hours of game's play during 40 days or pay to Blizzard about 200$. Now would you be willing to participate in tournament where are fundamental advantage could be bought via real money ?
Gameplay itself isn't bad except couple of severe bugs for Mac client which probably already fixed, the expansion Naxxramas isn't bad either, although all 5 wings on Normal mode could be eliminated in a couple of hours , however cards from Naxxramas quite useful so expansion is also part of marketing strategy , in terms of money it's a really good deal since it's provides specific valuable cards for a low price. The game is theme is all about World of Warcraft universe and some cards provides nostalgic value to fan's of "wrath of the lich king" expansion. If you are looking for a long term time investment and rewarding competitive gaming you will find this game as a huge disappointment. Surely as any card game results of every match could be quite random so if you are lover of carefully crafted strategies and well deserved rewards you should stay away from this game as well.

Even though it's simple to learn, huge variety of cards, 9 different classes, synergies, crafting etc. it's all complex enough to sink your teeth into and spend long time with it. But that's where this game is not developed yet, content. There is basically just a deathmatch casual, ranked, or arena and that's it. I'm missing some quality story mode or campaign mode Blizzard is known for. Right now there is just Naxxramas wings to unlock, which is basically just a couple of custom matches against AI with overpowered powers. Not to mention that to unlock individual wings you must grind like crazy for months to be able to earn enough in-game gold. Or of course pay for it in cash, which it was probably designed for, but to pay for it in cash I would expect much more than just a few AI duels. I respect the in-app purchases as the game itself is free, but if you limit yourself to stick with ingame gold, the grinding you have to endure to buy new Naxrammas wings or even packs is pretty hard. Overall, I love Hearthstone, the core of the game is fantastic, but it really needs more story expansions in order to keep my attention and it's lifespan in the future. 9/10 Expand

Simple as the game is, people still take exorbitant amounts of time to end their turns. It's actually quite boring watching players fumble thru their turn. A successful strategy for playing this game requires you to actually have something else to do at the same time. Fortunately, there's so little thought required that you can easily multitask.

The fan boys who valiantly defend this game will be upset with me, I'm a gamer. Masters in SC2. 12-2, 12-0 Hearthstone Arena in my 1st month. This game is boring.

Once you've learned how to play, The imbalance of the cards, the non-existence of MMR, and flaws in the design of a pay-to-win card game will be evident. Once you've realized the similarity to the children's card game "war," you'll see how bad this game really is.

This is a dumbed down CCG with some very smart aesthetic details and some very bad money/time devouring game concepts at base. It is a pity since it could have been a really fun and well designed game. Unfortunately devs have decided to come across too many compromises in order to make the game playable and light. It is really playable by everyone, shame this is a bad thing for a CCG: everyone here can win at least a match, it doesn't matter how smart you are, how skilled or what. It's really a matter of having the good cards and playing them when you get them, and having the luck to have random effects actually work. No real strategy here, not at a level you can expect from a CCG, at least.

The game soon comes to be repetitive, cards are few and mostly the same in all decks (why define classes with less than 20 types of cards and A TON of generic cards every class can use??). Getting new cards is pure pain due to ridiculous rewards for winning, boring mission system and incredibly high costs of everything.

It still has very good and funny graphics, and even a really smart and nice way to interact with other players, but after few days of playing it is really not enough to keep you in the game.

Simply put, a good time waster for casuals, a bad CCG for everyone else.

I was a bit sceptical. I mean - we're talking about Blizzard - the company that butchered and ruined WoW and Diablo series just for some extra money, but maybe they changed their ways?

It actually it is free, so anyone can test it.
The beginnings were quite fine. Couple of battles that teach us basic mechanics, everything looks nice, gameplay is smooth. Then we get access to training battles, we get to unlock new classes (each comes with some class-specific cards), we unlock more basic cards and try to build our own decks.

First few hours were really enjoyable. I was having fun, playing against AI, playing some battles vs other players. I've completed some "tasks" or "quests" and got some extra cards.

Then I tried playing training vs expert AI. Turns out it means that AI just uses better cards. I was beaten several times, all those rare/epic cards make a ton of difference. Then I've tried unlocking all the basic cards for all the classes. That was a big mistake.

It seems like matchmaker rather than looking at your win/loss ratio checks the level of your characters. Try unlocking all the basic cards (which means leveling all the characters till lvl 10) and suddenly you're fcked. I've done all those leveling against AI then I played 10 games versus other players.

First day of playing I went 6-1. Not bad.
Second day (after some leveling) I went 0-10. Yes, 10 losses. 9 of those games I've faced opponents who had max ~5 basic cards (out of 30). Better cards give MASSIVE advantage. I've even tried looking for some builds that include just basic cards, but I didn't make any difference. Last fight was quite ok: playing against a guy that only used basic cards - just like me. Close fight, going head to head for 8 rounds. Then he pops 2 legendary cards and I'm done.

Long story short: I need better cards if I want to have any chance of winning vs other players.
    How do you get them?

    1. Spend $$
    2. Play the single player campaing - which costs $$ to unlock
    3. Grind gold (virtual currency) to buy extra packs

You can get gold by: winning vs other players (10 gold per 3 wins).
Completing daily quests: 40-60 gold per quest. 2 quests per day.

Single pack costs 100 gold. It contains 5 cards, usually 1-2 rare cards in a pack.

You can't complete quests playing vs AI.

I can either pay money or grind for weeks, months while getting beaten by everyone because matchmaker sucks.

    F*** this game.

On one hand, this means that luck will eventually get the better of you and you WILL lose a fair amount of games. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Players will need to learn to adapt and create plays where the harmful effects of RNG can be reduced to minimum. It makes you think. A good deck does not need to win 100% of the games you played to reach Legend, you simply have to make one that has more than 50% win rate if you want to rank up. And sometimes, RNG makes things a lot more entertaining (see Hearth Trolden's videos on Youtube for a taste of it).

The issue that concerned most players is the aspect of pay-to-win and there's no denying that Hearthstone is indeed one such game. But coming from a physical trading card game background, this doesn't concern me too much as I am used to spending money to buy cards (too bad you can't sell them in this case). The daily quest and arena help a bit in this regard but the grind is still real. Only the passionate and patient can survive the grind so expect to pay if you have just started playing the game. In short, DO NOT treat this game as a free to play game.

Initially, I do have some concern regarding the balance of the game. Certain classes seem to dominate the ladder every season. But with every expansion, the meta shifts significantly. Every class is given the opportunity to shine. Even without expansion, when a certain class becomes dominant, anti-meta decks emerges which makes every season a different experience (which is why sites like Liquidhearth have a power ranks every month). And if a class remains dominant for many seasons (see Hunter and Rogue), Blizzard does interfere to nerf some of the key cards. And worry not, when a card is nerfed, you get to refund the cost to craft them so that you can use it to make something else. In addition, after the recent GvG expansion, most classes have deck variations that play very differently (control, aggro, tempo, or mid-range). This makes the game more brainy as you can't identify what type of decks your opponent is playing just by knowing his/her class anymore. If you are like me, who only plays a single class (Druid) because you can only afford to do so or because you really love that class, you can be sure to have a good time in certain seasons and some crappy moments other times. But the best moment for me in Hearthstone is when you manage to make a class work in a season when it is deemed to be the worst class to ladder with. And for me, this is what a card game is all about (satisfaction in experimenting with counter strategies).

Tl;dr: In essence, the foundation in which Hearthstone is built upon makes it a card game with tremendous potential (for funny moments as well). You ARE going to pay real cash if you decided to commit to the game and casual players not looking forward to spend cash will have a hard time winning. But for those who are fine with paying money to buy cards and are looking for a really enjoyable card game to commit to (for long term), I fully recommend Hearthstone because (for me) it is simply the most enjoyable and comfortable card game I have played since forever. My suggestion is to try the game first, don't worry about winning but instead check it out to see if you like the mechanics. If you do, then perhaps you can fork out some cash to get yourself started. If not, you can always try other card games that suit your style.

Disclaimer: I have a background of playing physical card games (mostly Yu-Gi-Oh!) for more than 10 years. I have been playing Hearthstone on PC since open beta (early 2014) up until today.

The ability to pay real money for card packs has given Hearthstone a reputation among some players as being a 'pay to win' game and that players have no chance of performing well unless they shell out for packs. This is, to an extent, true although the cards you are given to begin with and the extras you will pick up from packs bought with in-game gold from daily quests are generally enough to build a reasonable deck.

If you want to be one of the top ranked players, then yes, you will likely need to shell out for packs. But if you're content with just having a good time competing with your friends and enjoying the game, there's no need as you should do fine with what you pick up along the way.

Overall, Hearthstone is a simple but very fun game that can be enjoyed by both those looking to climb up to the top of the ranks and those who just want to kill some time or compete with their friends.

    - localization (polish language)

    Cons:
    - pay to win, free players play against premium players which have better legendary cards
    - lacks depth, doesn't require much strategic thinking
    - grind based for free players
    - luck to win, cards you get are random, even cards you use have random effects
    - lacks single player content

Summary avoid this game it is all about trying to get you to pay money.

I spent about two weeks with game and based on that I have urge to share my experience.

    Pros:

    1) "Deceptively simple and insanely fun" as they market is, really stands. Game is very fun and after several games you can easily get hooked. Although it is simple to begin, you soon realise it's depth of card combinations and strategies.

    2) Free to play - who wouldnt like that, fast download, and you are ready to go

    3) Nice and cosy game UI in Warcraftish style

    4) Games are fast - takes from 5 to 20 mins, depending on lengths of game and speed of players.

    Now the cons:

    1) Progress in terms of your strength 90% comes from new cards. New cards you can unlock with in-game currency "gold", or real life money via in-game shop. Unlocking with currency is of course way to slow, so after you get hokked up, you will need and want to spend lots of money to be able to compete with other players. So yes, it is 100% pay to win game. Even you will hear stories that this or that guy won a tournament with only basic cards deck, truth is you will never come more then rank 18 with them.

    2) Matchmaking system is terrible, there is no way to play against opponents who have similar "strength" cards available. Once you hit "magic" rank 20, game will start matching you with players tossing exlusivly magic (rare and legendary) cards from turn one onward. OFC your chance to win those matches is terrible.

    3) Game also has design flaws, so high ranked (read: powerful decks) players are motivated to de-level by auto surrendering games, in order to grind max daily allowed 100 gold faster the they would on their real rank. That also make it harder for new players to win. It is pretty clear this is allowed so new players would feel urge to alos have that "good" cards as soon as possible, and rush to in-game shop to buy packs of cards.

    4) With every expansion there are new cards (read "stronger"), and if you dont spend real life money, you will always stay behind.

My current opinion is that I will not stick to the game becasue of their money grab business model.

Basically with the actual trend on the horizon there is no way for a free to play gamer to do anything besides sitting in lower ranks and play highly unbalanced and frustrating matches. Why is that ?

If you want to be competitive you need decks from different sets (Naxxranas, Expert and the new GvG). You need to spend 3500 gold for Naxx, about 6000 gold for expert packs and something like 4000 gold for the new expansion deck. Assuming that on average you get 50-60 gold daily it would take you several months of farming the gold while experiencing unpleasant and unbalanced matches where you have to face players that spend a lot of money on cards. It means that in the farming meantime (about half a year) they will launch yet another expansion that will leave free player even further behind (more money to farm whil you are still behind). It is impossible to catch up. That's what the game looks like. If you want to compete with other players you have to pay. I do not like the idea of games that are based on this model. There are better and actually free to play games where you do not see this money based match up because Hearthstone is all about money.

This game is no longer for me as I prefer to support other gaming companies.

While you're not likely to getting to legend anytime quickly, it doesn't take too much dedication to build up a good collection of cards. Despite what some seem to say, pay to win is not as much an issue in this game as it is in many because there are lots of competitive decks that are really easy to make. Sure, you won't be making a successful control warrior anytime quickly, but after a few weeks of casual playing, you'll likely have everything a competitive Zoo (there are plenty of other cheap decks as well, just that zoo is the most iconic) deck needs to function.

You can't count on getting the legendaries you want from packs, but it isn't too hard to save up dust for rares and epics, which have a great diversity of powerful cards to choose from. Even with the best deck money can buy, you can still easily lose to a cheaper one that counteracts its weaknesses, so while money is helpful (as to be expected) it most certainly doesn't make the game unplayable without it.

My account is entirely free to play, and I can comfortably get to rank 5 each month, if I have the time at least. The daily quests give you the gold you need to buy lots of packs, and good arena runs will give you great rewards too. Your daily quests run out of course, but if you only play this game every three days or so like me, then it will take an hour or two to complete them all anyway, by which point you'll probably have gained your fix for the game, and you'll be a lot richer for it too.

It is of course, very easy for sore losers and people who haven't learnt how to play efficiently, to simply brand the game free to pay. Fact of the matter is, that so long as you don't mind spending a few months building up your collection, you'll be fighting with the best of them. And if you aren't, then maybe instead of blaming the game for your lack of progress, you can impart some on your own inabilities.

Yes it's a card game, which means it's extremely RNG based game, and blizzard actively encourages RNG factor by putting in cards which have random effects.

I would have given it 7/10 on purely game-play performance. Unfortunately the game even after a year of it's release is still constantly plagued by blizzard sever/connection issues. In other words it's a complete technical disaster, so on top of RNG rage, you will rage for loosing games because of desync, disconnect etc.

I was worried that taking out the concept of having to draw your mana would simplify the game but that isn't the case, it actually makes it more complex by taking out the randomness of someone not having enough or too much mana. Even with a small card pool to choose from there are a myriad of decks to choose from and build and they have already added 30 new cards to the game with another 120 coming in December with the first expansion. The biggest draw for me was the fact that it is free and you can not trade cards, eliminating any chance of a market for the best cards like Magic has. Either pay for packs or earn them and same goes for arena games. As with most free games there is no reason not to try it and if you are a card game player this one will hold your attention for a while. Expand

I've played since beta without paying and don't have a single legendary. I've earned $100+ of cards for free over a year or so to give you a scope of how much money/time DOESN'T get you a legendary. You simply don't get them without paying money. That would be fine if it was the business model to pay for a card, but it's not. You dump money into a RNG card generator hoping for a good card.

I play ranked primarily and I've always reached a point where it's not skill that matters, but having legendary cards. I've accepted that because I didn't play enough to hit that point quickly every month (rank resets every month), so it was still fun.

Now they've modified the model again and it's easier to get specific legendaries, but ONLY if you'll dump $40 into 15 minutes of content and three card rewards. The result is that the ranked cutoff where you need very rare and legendary cards to succeed is hit very early now in a matter of a few sittings.

Plus you can stack as many legendaries as you like. I played someone that I had dead to rights and then he played four legendary cards in a row. That's not deck-building, that's Bliz rewarding careless $$$ spending.

It's impossible to put my support behind a model like this because I just don't know whether my investment ends up useless three months down the road when they rework the system again. A lump sum up front for all cards, then for follow-up expansions would be ideal. Then you can have fun deck building. As it stands right now I haven't seen a card I can use in my favorite decks in months. It just feels like a treadmill.

It's a shame because I love games like this and I wanted this to succeed, but a Blizzard got in it's way.

At first glance this game is pretty good, at second glance it gets worse, at final glance it is a frustrating piece of ****

The main problem is the card decks and the element of luck in every game you play, for example you can play the same deck against the same opponent and the first time you can beat them without them even hitting you once, then you can reload and they will destroy you by move 8, you retry and destroy them by move 8. This has nothing to do with playing the cards you are dealt, since if luck isn't on your side you can end up with 4 cards that need 8 crystals and the opponent will have a zerg rush waiting to kick your ass.

It gets a 3 because it is a well crafted game like anything Blizzard make, but as for the gameplay mechanics it gets a big fat 0 since it isn't even a game that you can be good at, you just sit there and hope that *this* time your cards will come out in the right order and you can't actually be a GOOD Hearthstone player, just someone hedging his or her bets that the deck you've built is going to beat the odds so you don't need to be lucky to win it.

Which also means if you want to be good at Hearthstone you just need to buy the cards you need to win and play a lot, since there is no actual skill involved to become a good player, just the bare basics of gameplay where you don't make really stupid decisions. Get the basic elements of play down (don't use a group damage spell when the enemy has no minions, don't be stupid.) and you will win, and the reverse of that if you have a **** deck and luck isn't on your side you will fail.

I really wouldn't mind any of the luck element if the skill element could make up for bad luck, but it doesn't. You can be a brilliant strategist but you will lose against a lucky retard rolling his face across the keys and summoning a murloc zerg while you hold 2 core hounds you can't use for 3 turns. You might as well just download a higher/lower card game app on a tablet, because that's basically what Hearthstone is, just a random number generator with nice graphics.

Anyone starting the game now faces a massive disadvantage to players who have invested a great deal of time and money into this game. Hearthstone is quite addictive, however while the game looks good at the start, unfortunately it becomes terribly dull terribly quickly. Gameplay is based almost entirely on randomness and luck (card draw and random results), with skill a very small factor in the occasional game. There are countless technical issues which the developers seem unwilling or unable to address effectively.

It is really based on Magic the Gathering (MTG). There are a lot of key differences though:

It is much easier to learn and start playing it. Mastering it is still very difficult. It much faster than any other card game, with games that can last down to 5 minutes.

Unlike MTG, you will never get mana flooded or having too few lands. The game gives you a mana crystal every turn. This also means that less cards are needed in a good deck, i.e. you dont need the expansive multicolored lands like in MTG.

It is much cheaper that MTG. In hearthstone spending 200-250$ will get you all the cards, and half the legenderies. Probably more. In MTG a single card can cost more than the above amount. In a MTG deck you will need 4 cards of each. Decks are also 60 cards minimum, 20-25 of which are lands that are in general non-basik and cost money too. In Hearthstone they are exactly 30, an not lands. In addition in Hearthstone you actually get gold by making guests and just wining games in ladder. MTG you have to win some local event or booster draft. Nobody will give you free packs in MTG.

You can do something with you duplicates, you disenchant them to get arcane dust, so you can craft the cards you need. In MTG you sell or trade them, but the bulk of cards rots in the basement.

The arena, the draft analogy of MTG. cost 2$ to enter. Again much cheaper than MTG.

The game really shines on the ipad air.
The game itself is very polished and relatively bug free. It also is very addicting and fun to play.

Getting competitive is easy if you are good at it. Just get to top ranking in legendary and you go to Blizzcon.

Some things I have to say.
-The game is extremely difficult at higher ranks. Players there spend a lot of time on it, so if you don't do the same you will lose and drop in rank. No matter your cards. You CANNOT pay 1000$ and expect to be top player.

The only suggestions I have so far is to make climbing the ladder more interesting. As it is now, the only real reason to play on ladder is to get to rank 20 to get a card back. The next goal is to go to legend rank, which is very difficult. There is a huge number of games in-between that do not offer any type of reward except the 10 per 3 wins. Blizzard should really change that.

You need to roll a dice (casino!) and count for the best, but most probably you will open hundreds of packs before you will be able to build an actual working deck. And then all there is gameplay-wise is top-decking counting to get "that" one or two **** you cards" the opponent can do nothing about. I think any other card game out there is better than this, unfortunately. Even the theme can't save it.

It's very well presented in typical interface and graphics quality expected from such a large publisher. However, after quite a few hours of play, having built up tactics and got a good feel for the game, you realise the depth is lacking. 30 card decks with 2 card limits and only limited card pools to choose from leave a sour taste in the mouth every time you lose (and it will be frequently) to the very high weighting luck has in this card game. The character powers add some depth to the gameplay, but at the end of the day you'll play people using almost the same cards and win or lose on luck. The mechanics are quite restricted too, so I'm not sure that they can make a card base large enough to add the required variation to at least mask this element.
Those getting higher into the rankings will also realise that free to play gets you so far. The number of players using high %s of rares, even low in rankings, is very surprising and will limit the fun for the casual player.
It's certainly fun for a quick game here or there, and it's a shiny, we'll presented blizzard package, but if you're looking for some depth to your skill base in a card game, look elsewhere, as ultimately this is half built game mechanics with CCG-esc pay for power rankings.

Decent casual CCG with a simple mechanic and a steep learning curve. It can keep you entertained for a long time and offers constant short play sessions, perfect for mobile. Besides some computer trainers and dungeons, the main game is PvP with some matchmaking issues.

First hurdle for new players are the 9 classes to play and to fight. You must unlock their basic cards first, and get a grip on their special action and their specific class cards.

Quests urge you to try out an owerflow of options - play all classes, against the computer, normal and ranked games, arena and now dungeons. New cards flood in, and you'll find yourself constantly adapting your decks without really knowing what you do, especially when not spending money early to afford vanilla decks.

After this you're on your own. There are enough guides for basic decks and economic starter decks. There are even a few good generic deck building guides out there. With a good grip on the game (ouch) you can cash your tutorial rewards for some card packs and get a competitive deck going with a few magic cards.

Even a casual player can harvest decent quest rewards with limited, regular effort, with 3 quests in parallel. Rewards accumulate to about 250-300 gold in 4 days, which is 3 packs of new cards or 2 arena fees. Even play maniacs can only raise this amount slowly, and get rewards with bragging rights instead.

Perception of fairness is something else completely. Losing unranked games vs decks 10 times more expensive than your own feels broken, and makes you question the game's matchmaking.
In that respect ranked games are actually better, as the pros are sorted to the high ranks here.

But - even playing a perfect deck, I will lose 50% of my games against a mirror of my deck. In the short run random bad draws may leave me without chance more often than that (as does being a less than perfect player...).
Can my deck consistently beat the NPC? On normal and hard? Does it have tempo issues, good card resupply? Do I have a consistent win idea, or do I try to do too much at once, and nothing right? With many decks it also makes a big difference which class I fight, as they all have special actions and removals available. Which cards to keep at start against whom? What to prepare for? Few guides care to explain this, and unexperienced players rarely have a clue about it.

If you're still here at this time, you're hooked and try to hack the metagame.
Arena is nice as you randomly select your deck from all cards, but you better have a grasp on deck building or it is a waste of resources. Dungeons (Naxramas) add more (distant) cards, something a beginner can do without.

For some time the game had some annoying connectivity issues, atm it runs smoothely. Can play my account from both Pad and PC, which is fine.

Yes you can buy card packs with ingame currency(gold) but earn gold in this game is very frustrating, lets do some simple maths, you need 100 gold for buy 1 card pack so you need to win 30 games(crazy) but you will loose 50% of games so you have to play 60 games(lol 60 games for buy 1 card pack), 10 min for every game = 600 min = 10 hours.

All of the cards are recognizable from the WoW source material that they are drawn from. The UI is convenient. It doesn't do any stupid crap like having cards sidewaysor upside down like certain other games(No idea why they do that, quite stupid for a video game where 2 players are not sharing the same monitor). It even allows you to disenchant unwanted cards to build up a dust supply to eventually craft what you do want, something other games don't have. This is a real game seller. Those other crappy card games just expect you to lottery until you get what you want, to hell with copies or cards you don't want piling up.

But on the other hand, you have a game that is being treated very poorly by its developer's. Not only is the balance in the game non existent because it focuses on a meta instead(Blizzard openly admits this)... but It's now over run with bots that they still refuse to do anything about. Bots are farming this game day and night now, so don't be surprised when you fight the same exact bot decks again and again. The bots have even infested the forum now, creating a slew of garbage spam threads every single night that persist until they're pushed off the next morning by real posters. Blizzard couldn't care less about these issues. They don't even use their own forum most of the time, opting instead to go to social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook. That means that instead of caring about the users they have, they care only about drawing more in, which is the overall feel of the game. It's one big cash grab of a product, probably made solely to draw in revenue which they're now no doubt using on Heroes of the Storm instead of using it to improve Hearthstone.

The competitive play for the game is in shambles because of it's non existent balance. Every player with a class runs the same exact build because, when you run a meta, that's how it works. They all run what is best, to hell with anything else. If you come into this expecting a balanced game... you're going to be gravely disappointed. Half of the cards in this game are garbage no one uses or has any reason to use, while a small fraction are best and auto slotted into every deck. Many players like myself(1k+ posts) have spent all year trying to talk Blizzard into fixing this game, including all problems I've pointed out here, and we've only gotten deaf ears turned to us. As usual with Blizzard games, the months roll by and little to no problems are actually addressed. They take the game down for entire days to apply no patches, or patch with 1 or 2 lines in the patch log that didn't fix anything people were trying to get them to look at for months on end.

The biggest thing they did for the game this year was add Naxx, which basically just hands out a slew of cards very cheaply to anyone that wants them. Naxx is an all around bust in my opinion. It's too cheap to enter, too easy to beat, then has no reason to even replay it once you got all the cards. The only difficulty even in this "adventure" is Heroic Mode, which makes the bosses impossibly difficult without tailor made decks to beat them. And what's your reward for all the trouble? Nothing. You get nothing for beating every boss on Heroic except a card back no one cares about. It needed a middle ground, instead of having a "too easy" mode that hands out all the cards, and a "too hard" mode that gives you nothing for your trouble. Bust. Just a bust. Replayability would have helped, but there is none for it. After doing all of Naxx, I finally decided to retire. I've waited long enough for Blizzard to do something with this title, anything other than treating it like a lottery machine.

I should point out the embarrassing Kel Thuzad voice acting. What used to be an evil Lich is now a clown cracking jokes for bored children at a birthday party. That sets the overall tone and disappointing nature of the game perfectly.

But like all controversial games with nothing but biased fanboy or hater reviews; it's both over rated and under rated. Speaking from an objective point of view, it's not a bad game, it just isn't as great as it easily could have been if Blizzard cared at all about it. I'd like to point out that despite what a lot of ignorant people say, it is not P2W either. You can competitive with cheap decks; it's been proven time and time again. The debate about this has been beaten to death, with threads made nearly every day trying to convince you one way or the other. I've been competitive myself and never put in more than 10$. So I can't really thumbs this up or down; I'm just going to leave it up to you as I retire. In summery Hearthstone is a decent enough card game, but it's easy to be disappointed when you look at all the wasted potential.

Also players that actually choose to pay for cards in this game somehow gain a advantage over those that refuse to pay and this makes the game even cheaper than it already is.

Contrary to what so many bad reviews say, it's not a pay for win game at all, nor arena is a pay to play. Of course you start with few cards only but with some patience you can build competitive decks without spending money at all, other than that you can find on Internet a lot of lists of "budget decks", perfect for who has just started; it's a COLLECTIBLE card game and you can't expect to start having all the cards from the beginning! Speaking about the arena: I think that a lot of reviewers are just whiners, when I started I had difficulty in the arena too but once you get used to it, maybe reading some guides, you can gain a lot from it, and accelerate the collection of cards pretty well.

Another prime example of the nowadays popular f2p p2w model. Prepare to be disappointed if you want to have fun without spending a penny. Most of your opponents will be players who pay a lot, and that means a HUGE advantage against the non-paying gamers. Skip this game if you want to avoid a headache.

Really, hearthstone isn't pay to win if you think about it. Moreover, its a 1/15 chance getting a legendary, so its not like everyone who pays money for packs is getting AMAZING GAMECHANGING CARDS!

Finally, onto the gameplay. Hearthstone is basically a simpler, online version of Magic, with it being better in some ways, and worst in others. Playing the game actually requires some thinking, strategy, and actual dedication to the game. You may have an amazing deck, you still need to know how to play it, especially versus other classes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a well done and expansive virtual CCG. Unfortunately there are some aspects that suck including not being able to trade cards, pay 2 play model, and lack of creativity in deck creation. However this is the best online TCG today; and will likely be in the future as Blizzard continues to expand the game. With 9 unique classes from the "Warcraft" universe this adds a unique way to play the CCG. For being relatively new the game is fairly balanced in time it will be even better as they patch and perfect it. I like the new expansion as it adds single player that is very difficult. I played Pokemon and Magic back in the day. Both solid TCG... but Blizzard released a great product here that allows players to be ranked competitively. To those people that say the skill ceiling is low and it is only P2P they are wrong... as they would clearly know if they spent more than 10 hours on the game. Expand

Two, I agree with those who dislike the power that legendaries and epic cards have. If any HS person here can name me a card that can efficiently trade with the dragons then I'll concede this point. However, at the time of writing, there are no vanilla cards that are as powerful as the above. While people who do have the above are at an advantage, HS is in no way a p2w game as evidenced by one of, if not, the strongest decks in game being free.

Three, RNG sucks but HS is a game of percentages. Its not about how many individual games you win but how high your win ratio is. So, yeah, RNGesus sucks.

I gave HS a 6 because the music and design (not game design) is pretty good. I believe that there's plenty of room for growth and that the devs really need to capitalize on this.

Arena is fun as hell to play. and those saying that ~50 gold a day is hard to get are treating the game way to seriously. Its something you play in between LoL or DotA matches.. Hell I've got 4k saved up right now and I only play 2x a week.

Before posting my review, I read dozens of other user-submitted reviews and felt that the majority of those who gave Hearthstone ridiculously low ratings either did not have enough time to practice the game, had a negative view of the game because they had trouble winning, or simply disliked the game due to the lack of violence, intense action or a gripping, movie-like storyline. MyBefore posting my review, I read dozens of other user-submitted reviews and felt that the majority of those who gave Hearthstone ridiculously low ratings either did not have enough time to practice the game, had a negative view of the game because they had trouble winning, or simply disliked the game due to the lack of violence, intense action or a gripping, movie-like storyline. My counter to these views, to be frank, is to remember that this is a strategic card game that is based off of the Warcraft series. I understand that this genre does not have the same appeal as violent or action-packed games, but if you play with an open mind, practice different strategies, experiment with hundreds of thousands of possible card combinations, and learn from your mistakes, you will find Hearthstone to be a very deep and creative gameplay experience that is complex enough to be extremely entertaining, while also being simple enough for those who practice to win. All of the angry reviews that say that you have to pay to win in Hearthstone are the biased opinions of those who do not have the patience to practice getting better and do not have the money to satisfy their impatience. Even when I had only played Hearthstone for one or two months of somewhat regular gameplay I could easily win the majority of my matches in casual mode and more than half of the matches in ranked mode with a deck full of basic (free, given) cards. For those people who complain that Hearthstone isn't deep because of its lack of a storyline, I would recommend that they try out any of the Warcraft games or World of Warcraft to satisfy their desire for a deep, detailed and engrossing fantasy storyline. All of the cards and characters in Hearthstone are directly taken from those games, after all. I think that the biggest problem that angry Hearthstone reviewers are experiencing is that they do not play Hearthstone with an open mind. I understand that different people have different opinions, but the fact that there are so many uninformed and, quite frankly, untrue complaints about Hearthstone, I feel that it does the game justice to urge more people to play the game without any untrue beliefs, and to form an informed opinion of the game based on actual gameplay. 1) Business model - it may look like a fair f2p game, but believe me, soon you will see how long it takes to get all the cards you need to play at competitive level. If you are beginner it's just p2w game. Until you learn how to play you will lack gold for arena and lack cards for ranked games.

I'd rather pay set amount of money for the game and have equal conditions right from the start. It kinda works that way with recent expansion, but hey, if you are new, you still need those vanilla cards.

    2) Only two game modes - arena and ranked (well there is casual normal mode but it's just regular 1vs1 with no incentive to play it).

    3) Ranked system is kind off dull and too simplistic. You either get a star or loose a star - to climb or fall in ranks. What's more, there are only few decks with obviously specific legendary (or high rarity cards) that really work in higher ranks, so in the end - you face same decks over and over. So wins the one with better RNG, or one whose deck works better against opponents deck. After a while it becomes very tedious.

    4) Lack of skill needed. You learn how the game works and what "abilities" cards have, you learn what cards can be played at which turn (just in case to play around) and pretty much it. Then it's all about better card draw.

    5) Unbalanced cards. There are some insanely overpowered cards with insane value (absolute must have cards) and there are some ridiculous one trick pony combos. You can simply beat your opponent in 1 turn down from full HP.

Overall it lacks some more depth, more strategic aspect and more game modes.

Sure you can check it out for free and it's more than enough to see yourself if this game and business model suits you. But for sure, if you consider to play it at competitive level, prepare for long grind of card packs or prepare to shake you wallet.

And chance of getting epic or legendary cards is smaller than being hit by lightening. And after a while, you will get common cards that you already have. So don't waste I your money in

The in-game transaction is expensive, 2 dollars per card pack which only has 5 cards. And chance of getting epic or legendary cards is smaller than being hit by lightening. And after a while, you will get common cards that you already have. So don't waste I your money in this game buying card packs. Arena entry is another money robber, for 2 dollars you get to play the arena game with random cards. This is all depends on luck, someone will get nice cards in their decks, some one will get all useless cards. Balance takes a small role, luck rules all.

The balance in this game is terrible, because the designers are on ok lazy that they create a lot of cards with random effects. For those who has played a lot or has spent lots of money buying cards, they can form a deck with all epic or legendary. New players will be crushed. Thus there is no fun for new players. Because the game is so imbalanced, now only a few certain decks almost wins all the time, and most old players only play those decks to win. There is no diversity and no fun.

If you are new, STAY AWAY from this game, don't waste your time and money.

When Blizzard announced they were making a digital CCG, we all expected it to look and sound beautiful, and there was little doubt that it would be well-balanced, but I don’t think anyone anticipated this level of sophistication and subtle brilliance.

Simple rules, high production values, low system requirements and huge tactical freedom make Hearthstone one of the best card games available. And if you take into account the free-to-play model – it’s the best one. [05/2014, p.62]

A fine example of a great free-to-play game. Hearthstone is not only an addictive and well designed card game, but absolutely fair with gamers that do not wish to spend money on it.
