Yu and Kay's dialogue is fun, realistic, and genuine thanks to wonderful voice acting and scenarios. The addition of conversations between the 2 regarding daily life or spicy moments is very different from other games, and as a result you become much more connected to Yu and Kay. This brightness is contrasted by a somewhat dark background to the game's setting and a few anxiety inducing moments that have you staring at the screen in worry which respectively keep the game grounded and engage you further by feeding you some salt in between the sweetness. In the background is a phenomenal soundtrack (composed by Danger) that accentuates the emotional moments of the game while also helping you get lost whilst gliding through Haven's various islands. The playable setting of the game is bland at times since there isn't too much to find on each island other than resources, but it's made up for with smooth movement that consists of Yu and Kay swiftly gliding across the land. Along the way you'll find "flow threads" which are energized trails that can take you into the sky and help you reach areas that are otherwise impossible to get to. This DOES get a little bit frustrating because sometimes, finding the right flow thread to get to a certain place can feel impossible and waste a lot of time. This, combined with a lack of a GPS map can make it so that players miss certain connections to other islands or be unable to fully explore one. The combat is quite simple and consists of semi-real time battles where you charge up 2 different types of attacks and have to manage attacking and blocking to make sure you don't get overtaken. It can be a little tedious sometimes (and unbalanced) but it has interesting ideas that might work better in Haven's co-op mode. Even though I do have some criticisms of Haven, the game managed to connect me with its cast in a way no other piece of media has done. It's the kind of game that can leave you with a pained chest when you finally finish it (as it did for me). Because of that, along with a great story and resonant soundtrack, Haven is one of my favorite games of all time. It's not perfect, and while it's a 9/10 here, it's a 11/10 in my heart. Expand

This should have been a great game with such an interesting premise. However, it falls flat on many levels. Clunky controls, lacklustre graphics and presentation and well as boring characters. The voices are ok as is some of the music. All in all, the gameplay just isn't interesting enough and neither is the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Though the story begins with their harrowing escape complete; Kay and Yu paint a detailed tapestry of their former home. One that was on the surface lovely but left me chilled with each reveal of the cruelty that just barely holds it together

...and genuinely anxiety at what would happen to Kay and Yu if they were caught.

Despite being adorable, warm and funny, it is deep and mature in its themes. Completing it may leave you contemplating on it for days afterwards.

I could, truthful, say this is one of the best games I’ve ever played, but that feels, to me, disingenuous. It is a game and said gameplay is fun, but outside of some of the optional achievements its difficulty is such that anyone can complete it. Complete it not beat it, the developers clear wanted it to be experienced fully. In that regard I think we lucked out.

We, as humans crave illusions, in books, films, games, etc. But they can’t create an emotional depth at the level of real life interactions. They can’t, I thought. For me, this one did.

Not the best combat system but I throughly enjoyed this game. It could've been a 10/10 for me if the combat was a little bit more enjoyable. A turn based combat system like that of FF or Persona series with a couple more skills might've been much better. But I really liked the story and characters and the game overall for what it is.

The core gameplay is essentially roaming around in search of parts to fix the pair's ship. There is a light hunger as well as RPG battle element embedded, which necessitates additional time and attention. The battles are designed for an interesting co-op experience (which you can play alone in), and reminds me of RPGs like Final Fantasy.

The environment is nice to look at, but it doesn't take long to become a familiar sight. Once you're an hour or two into the game, you'll likely try to speed through to progress the story. At some point in time, you'll get rather tired of the same monotonous gameplay that persists throughout. Still, the music is good, the voice acting is great, and the dialogue is brilliant (albeit rated M for Mature). It is worth a play for the character interaction alone, or as something to play with your boy or girlfriend, but it isn't an incredibly enthralling experience.

If you were to play this with some one it would take a lot of talking during the fight. The strategy won't be deep but... youll be talking. There are numerous questionable design choices such as not being able to chose an enemy to target and not being able to see your health points in battle. Also sometimes the dialogue feels like it is aiding the plot get to where it wants to go instead of feeling completely natural. That being said, the game does a whole ton of world making by dialogue alone. There is no exposition in this game. You literally learn everything by their dialogue. I would love for this universe to expanded on. Maybe a sequel where you are in the Apiary and Kay and Yu are rebel heroes. Expand

It was a beautiful, simplistic yet complex game with a wonderful story.
    I would gladly play again.
Mixture of interesting and different gameplay dynamics, story and cute moments, a bit of sci fi-ness and mystery of the world around you and the universe your characters live in.

My only fault is the instructions were a bit light.

I enjoyed my time with the game thoroughly, and enjoyed getting lost in a lovely relationship between two people fighting for freedom.

My only gripes with this particular game is that I would have welcomed more depth in terms of it's gameplay, both the movement and the combat could have been enhanced ever so slightly so players craving a challenge could sink their teeth into some optional content (available only to those who will go to that length), however I do think that the fact that this is not present in the game was intentional since it might not relate to the core aspects of the story.

Yu and Kay, our protagonists, completely and utterly embody this love, where they demonstrate time and again their unconditional acceptance and yearning for one another. This is something their old world government, the Apiary, completely dismisses, believing that top-down security ought to be valued over the chaotic and uncertain nature of romance. Yu and Kay deepen their already iron-clad bond as they fight the legions of armored death machines sent to neutralize them by the Apiary, with the mechanics of the game allowing the player(s) to demonstrate their conviction by timed attacks, mutual shielding, and the ability to bring the other back from the brink of death with coordinated controls.

Haven's story is totally character-driven, and it's not even focused on their development but on the interactions between Yu and Kay. I love the interaction of characters and I sometimes complain about the lack of them in stories, what they did here was very unique, especially if we consider that the game already starts with them together, it is a lesson for many entertainment media (especially Japanese ones I would say ). The conversation with Yu's mother and the drama between her and Kay was very realistic and very good (it's the highlight of the game towards the end). The dialogue with the guy who was supposed to be Yu is very good. It is strange to think that the game has 4 characters and 2 of them appear in only 1 scene each, the two supporting actors could have more appearances, in flashbacks at least. What brings me to my biggest criticism, not showing the past was something that bothered me a lot, just that the protagonists comment directly and some scenes appear on the loading screens. The loading screens are very good, you can imagine a whole mini story on them, sometimes they are just funny or even dramatic, in short, the variety of them is very good. The game has 2 endings, I made the 'right' choice and I only saw the 'good', although it was a bit bittersweet, as Yu was a little silly, they paid the price of freedom, which was fair and the epilogue is cool.

Amazing how ALL the lines have VA, and he is very good.

I didn't understand anything about Opening but I liked it. The ending of the game is cool too.

You are crafting together, fighting together and travel/fly together (while you hold each other's hand).

And while the gameplay is simple, the maps are beautiful and the mechanics are good enough to keep it interesting. Although, at some point it got a bit boring and I felt that I am just grinding, but then it picked up the pace again to deliver a smooth finish. I don't know how is it playing alone, but playing it with your significant other compares to nothing. It is an experience worth having.

The only reason I am not giving 10/10 is because no matter how much fun the game is, it is still flawed. The camera is probably the best example, which often behaves weirdly.

    Graphics
Haven graphics are simply astounding the watercolor look that “The Game Bakers” chose was an amazing choice. It is incredibly bright and vibrant. 20 years from now Haven will still look good because of the style they chose. The only real negative are the character models which are just okay.
    Sound & music
The voice acting overall is excellent. The music is the real selling point and best described as electronic. Those who have played “Furi” will recognize it. Haven is much more upbeat. It does not have the same bass that “Furi” had. It also lacks that sense of looming danger and high stress tension. The music in Haven is far more upbeat and lighthearted. Something you can listen to while riding your bike or going for walk or run.
    Gameplay
The gameplay is just average to be honest. It follows a rock, paper, scissors gameplay. You have four buttons: pacify, impact, blast, shield and that is it. This all happens in a turn-based real-time arena. The other part of the gameplay is to collect fruits or other materials to fix the ship as it is the main overarching plot point that follows you all the way to the end of the game. It is simple but it gets the job done and it does not overstay its welcome. The game is about 8 to 12 hours long. So, no combat fatigue. One last note unlike “Furi” Haven is an amazingly easy game. the game straight up tells you right from the get-go that the combat is quite simple and there is really nothing that stressful for you to overcome.
    Story
The story revolves around Kay and Yu as star crossed lovers who escape from their sci-fi society to live out on a paradise planet called Source far away from the “Apiary” that is the name the sci-fi Empire they came from. The story is made intentionally vague and only slowly unravels to reveal their backstory and the society they both ran away from. For the most part it is light-hearted, but the story ramps up when Kay and Yu must face the consequences of trying to escape the Apiary. That is about all I want to say about the story. I genuinely believe that you should experience the story for yourself.
    Conclusion
Haven over all is an excellent game 8/10 I will remember it and I will play again and not immediately delete from my computer. I hope that you all will give it a chance if nothing else buy it on sale. The games in only $25 dollars and is well worth your time. Such a genuinely feel-good game is something that I think everybody needs to purge the toxicity of 2020 and start something new.

Great break after a busy day. With or without a partner, you will experience this respite together with at least Yu and Kay. The story in a dreamy landscape is worth it. [Issue#309]

Haven is a fun mixture of visual novel storytelling, walking simulator exploration and just a dash of action-adventure. The main focus is on the couple and their story of survival on an alien planet. With that in mind, it's not a game for everyone, but it is a fun adventure to take.
