This excellent blast from the past is a game targeted at old school FPS games. Not retro-gamers. Not retro-gamers. This is for those old enough to have played the id titles on flickering CRT monitors at lan parties. Hands of Necromancy is meant to play like Heretic, with a Hexen style hub system. Billed as a metroid-vania inspired game, the overall gameplay feels more like a mix between Outlaws and Dark Forces, but maintains the theme and feel of traditional fantasy themed 2.5D games.

Hands of Necromancy runs on familiar technology, friendly to modders with a license that is permissive to customization. To us geezers of gaming, it feels like finding a new game on the shelf and not being able to get enough.

So called retro-gamers will likely find the game boring, or unintuitive. It focuses on slow paced discovery, and surprise. It is not "nintendo hard" but it does feature the same "nightmare" difficulty features as Doom engine games. If you read the manual first, it won't be fun. If you let every feature be a surprise, then this game will quite literally transform your expectations. (pun intended)

This is tremendous stuff, a game that could absolutely have been released alongside Raven Software’s mid-90s fantasy shooters and held up. (Although people would have been mystified by the lighting tech.) Hands Of Necromancy is a welcome addition to that fold, and HON Team have become a team to follow.
