A great sequel to a great game! Well done Valve, and I look forward to Chapter Two. Perhaps make Ch. 2 a bit longer, like about 10 more hours worth of gameplay. That'd be perfect!

Considering what this is: an expansion pack for Half Life 2, this is one of the greatest addons ever. The story is interesting, but allmost TOO fast paced. To compare it to prior Half Life add ons, this was superior (Length of play-wise) to Blue Shift, but not as long as Opposing Force. She's the first NPC I've ever seen that can handle herself as well as the "hero" himself (It helps that she seems to be invulnerable, and knows when to duck Snipers.) Entertaining but definitely lacking the variety in scenery and theaters of HL2. Also the storyline is less captivating and clings to the Citadel setting much too long. I'll still be waiting for the next episode though.

I would have given this game a 9 - the usual great storyline unfolding etc all rank this game highly. The increased partnership with Alyx made this very good. Being deaf - subtitles made this game just almost perfect. What bought the score down was that it was perhaps a bit short. This could be forgiven if Episode Two came out soon after - ie 6-9 months later...but not over a year (and I would have given this game a 9 - the usual great storyline unfolding etc all rank this game highly. It is fun, looks great and is short. Very short. HL and HL2 took awhile to finish, and had great puzzles as well as great fights. HL2e1 was a let down. Graphics and animation were improved, but that was about it. Not much happened, I just hope the gameing world isn't comeing to graphics that are incredable at the cost of game itself.

This game is just as good as Half Life 2 - just a bit short, but it was fairly priced. I think if you are buying it for the plot of half life, it is a must as it solves and opens up new questions about all sorts of things. You also get Alyx as a sidekick and she isn't too overpowered or underpowered against enemies, and finally there has been graphical updates like HDR.

A generally space-less shooter. The player becomes disengaged from the characters & scenarios of this game Each scene is more puzzle-based than Half-Life 2, and the interaction with Alyx is not cooperative enough to compliment such emphasis on puzzle solving. .

The game was far shorter than I expected. For $20 I expected more than 2 hours of gameplay. It was nice to see the introduction of HDR into the game but there really wasn't much else here. The game was too easy, too short, and at the end of the day felt quite empty conpared to the origional. Hopefully Episode 2 will actually we long enough to make an afternoon out of.....

When it does, you can be sure an interesting puzzle is ahead of you... and not one involving piling bricks on a see-saw as a means of getting to a higher ledge. It is fairly expensive (you should have preordered!) for the 5-6 hours experience that it provides but you can be sure that it's replayable many times over. I can say that this game has the most interesting and therefore the best story ever, which almost by itself is a reason to give this game a 10. I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Half Life 2, but for me it had one major disappointment - perhaps by its very episodic nature it lacked some of the scope that made Half Life 2 so spectacular. It didn't have any of the amazing open vistas and strong sense of journey that characterized Half Life 2, instead repeating the more claustrophic feeling of some of the former game's latter sections. Having Alyx with you nearly the entire time completely changes the feeling of the game. Not necessarily in a bad way, but Gordon has always been, first and foremost, a loner. While the Half Life franchise has always had some of the best character interaction of any FPS, that sense of mostly being alone, and in control of what you are doing, has always been pervasive. Not so in Episode One, where you seem to spend most of your time following Alyx's directions like a faithful puppy dog. Although all that is perhaps worth it just to hear her ask if there is room for two in your hazard suit! The puzzles are mostly interesting and inventive, if usually fairly obvious. But always fun. On the positive side, the visuals are impressive. The story is fascinating. And it's a lot of fun to play. The gentle humor of Half Life 2 is also well and truly evident. Definitely worth the money, and looking forward to Episode 2. Expand

    this game is just awesome.
as i got it over steam, only cost me £12.80 (conversion rates r0xors)
its well worth the money, and hardcore hl fans shouldnt be so annoyed just because its about 6 hours long, just over £2 an hour, cheaper than some adult phone lines. and well worth it

I think Episode 1 was a smooth transition from the orginal game itself. There was plenty of action and building of the story line to keep me entertained and wanting more. I'm looking forward to the release of Episode 2.

Very short but very nice. They did improve the engine added effects and tweaked and expanded the npc interaction. But those things are not visible enough for most players i guess. IMHO new weapons and mobs would not have greatly improved the gameplay. I praise valve for sticking to the storyline and not making just another addon like some ppl think it is.

I loved half life 2 it was a good length and the only disappointment was the ending which left me quite bewildered (having completed EP1 i can now sleep easy:) ). There was nothing like the wonderfully long canals in HL2 the path was extreamly rigid in this title. Some of the visuals were breathtaking but there was no chance to explore at all. As many have said far to linear. The next episdode is looking far more promising as teasers are showing woodland. Please valve let us take a stroll this time. Just to see whats there. Expand

I will admit, this game felt shorter than expected, and when I finished it left me wanting more. But hey, isn't that what a good game is supposed to do? The animation anvances in Alyx was incredible and the storyline is greatly advaced in this expansion. I hope Alyx returns in episode 2, the additon of a partner through most of this game was a fantastic descision on the part of Valve.

I think Half Life 2 Episode 1 was a very thrilling experience. Pros: Episode one gave you a lot more of Half-Life 2. There are a good amount of puzzles, only a few of which require physics. Valve did well and keeping you on your toes with nonstop action. The loading sequences and puzzles are well placed to ensure that you do get your breaks from the action when it becomes too stressful, I think Half Life 2 Episode 1 was a very thrilling experience. The loading sequences and puzzles are well placed to ensure that you do get your breaks from the action when it becomes too stressful, however. The AI of Alyx is absolutely wonderful, she has the capability to move around the world according to your movements and your actions, plotting out the best strategy in that situation. The game answers the question: "How do you and Alyx survive?". Cons: The game was relatively short. It took me 5 hours on hard mode, and took me 6 hours on hard mode with the commentary turned on (the commentary is very interesting to listen to, however). Though the game is worthy of two playthroughs, it is difficult to find a reason to play it a third time, seeing as how nothing in episode 1 is new or original. Overally: This game is worth the $20; basically, it is more Half-Life 2, which isn't a bad thing, but not necessarily a good thing either. I was hoping for some unique gameplay; instead, we got HDR lighting, improved AI, and one question answered. This review may sound negative, but that is because I am outlining what is bad; the things that are good are very obvious. Expand

The very meaning of the word's "short but sweet". Despite the length, gameplay was interesting, challenging, and nearly every aspect of HL2 was upgraded. Hopefully HL2:ep2 will continue this trend of improvement.

Excellent episode. Price is more than worth the gameplay, and the developer commentary is top-notch. Fun, tight, and a definite must-buy. Paying a little extra for episodic installments is worth it, compared to waiting 5 years for a behemoth epic game.

This game was fantastic, and managed to introduce a few new twists and turns throughout its expected episodic span. This release was darker than Half-Life 2 and fullfilled the Half-Life tradition of spine-tingling action. An evening of yelping at 'zombines' well spent.

Great levels, animations & sounds. Story is still one of the best I seen, and looks like it will be a jaw dropper of an ending. Only reason this isn't a 10/10 is because I would have liked to have played through another two/three levels, and would have been nice to be brought into some newer enviorments to hl2. Can't wait for ep2!!

Very well done. Another new enemy and some new weapons and/or characters would have made this game even better. Even though it's an expansion pack, I felt it was just a tad too short. Another hour or so would have been great. Plus a few performance issues have arisen for many players including myself. Other than these minor flaws, Valve has done a great job.

Not much is the way of weapons just like half-life 2, It has good gameplay and also the citidal levels were very fun. I like to use the doors that you go into the ball tube with and use them as sheilds so you don't have to dodge them.

  1. Just like the original Half-Life 2, Episode One keeps the player entertained almost the entire time through perfect pacing and by being inventive, surprising and getting the basics absolutely right. It's a wonderful advert for the excitement that true episodic content can generate when approached the right way.
  2. Episode One is a memorable romp through the Half-Life universe, with gameplay that's even more satisfying than that of "Half-Life 2." The only downside is that, due to its episodic nature, it's over far too soon.

A brief, stylistically claustrophobic experience whose polish and personality manage to keep things moving.
