    So few games are capable of putting humans together like this in a den of villainy and letting them become slowly corrupted or instantaneously redeemed. Hackmud does this and does it very well. It is like the early internet it so perfectly mimics: a world of confusion, paranoia and possibility.

    First, this game is not a MUD, nor is it a traditional MMO. The best way to describe this is a simulated cyberworld. You can't always tell who the NPC's are, or which scripts are player made; the results of which foster a sense of distrust and realism in the game. You don't choose a class at any point in the game, but it is designed in such a way that how you choose to tackle a given obstacle defines what the game chooses to label you: Architect (for programmers), Infiltrator (for those who have studied/practiced breaking into player systems), Scavenger (for those who have studied/practiced breaking into NPC systems), and Executive (for those who choose to help organize and run corporations and larger scale missions). The developer touts that through the use of javascript you could even run a simulation of this game inside the simulation.

    Having played since release, I will say that server connection issues are much rarer. The game itself was difficult to spot in the crowded marketplace on Steam, especially considering how many indie titles (and junkware) release on the platform on a daily basis. This situation, coupled with the fact that this is a relatively niche title that might appear daunting to players without any coding experience, could keep many people from trying out the game. However, you can do very well at this game without any coding experience at all. The command line is where all the action in this game happens anyways.

    I would suggest that the developer create a free version of the game that takes you through the vlan (single-player) tutorial. This would let players experience the game to determine whether they even have the necessary critical thinking skills to make it out of the vlan before they plop down $20. I wholeheartedly believe the game is worth full price, but completely understand any reluctance to risk a purchase of a somewhat technical-looking game.    … Full Review »
