Boghog and NGDev's excellent tutorial gives a peek behind the curtain that reveals a very managable and generous game compared to the old school style shmup, despite appearances. All of the systems are tilted in the players favor to blow stuff up, score, and feel like an awesome pilot. No "no-bomb" runs here, unless you want to challenge yourself. Plenty here for veterans too with multiple difficulties, intuitive scoring, and diverse ship selection. (check out superplayer Jaimer's Type-C Intense run on YouTube). It even has a some optional "rogue-lite" elements to ease modern gamers into the genre.

As a relative newcomer to the shmup STG genre I wish I played this game as my first shooter. Gunvein has all the ingredients of a breakout hit but unfortunately, we're saddled with a gaming media that prefers narrative cinematic velvet rope tours and trend chasing, plus the inherent bias against the arcade style of game design when reviewing games on a deadline.
