Like many of you I have been disappointed by so many games over the years but I decided to get Guildwars 2 yesterday and it is awesome!
I am a MMO fan and have enjoyed playing such games as WOW, SW:TOR, Everquest 2, Rift and Tera but I have to say Guildwars 2 blows them away. There is so much to do and see. Believe the hype!

It's pretty exciting to have an MMORPG that doesn't kick you out of immersion in the fantasy on a regular basis. The story is nice, it isn't over the top epic quite yet, and while your personal stake in the story takes place in instanced zone, it still happens in the game world not some other place. A large portion of the story occurs in the open world as well, allowing for free participation and rewarding all who do participate.

When you find a new area, rather than looking for a quest hub, you just explore and things will pop up on the side of the screen letting you know what's happening and how you can help. There are still quests out there that aren't like this, but for the most part you are adventuring to adventure.

Loot is useful in some way, either by salvaging or actually using for long spreads of game play making any reward at least partially valuable.

Even if you don't like the game play, or if you are a dedicated adherent to some other MMO, I recommend looking at GW2 and checking out the various tools for making playing with alts and crafting much less cumbersome. Crafting materials all go in to a shared character inventory with a limit I have yet to reach on how many of what can be stored. Banking is also shared. This allows a player to back up their main with crafting alts, allowing them to never leave the field, putting materials into their crafting inventory and then accessing their crafted goods from the bank later. This also gives your alts a way to levelup from crafting xp to help them along their way.

Equipment looks amazing also. While some items do suffer from the floating pauldrons effect seen in other titles, you can turn these items off visually. The armor slots are also far more interesting than the skin tight armor textured pajamas from DDO, WoW and others. A coat looks like a coat, skirts can go anywhere from just covering your bum to knee length or the floor. Using the whole body to add multiple shapes makes the world look a lot more reasonable than most other item designs we see in MMOs.
Without getting to endgame, I'm already very satisfied with this purchase. The only major short comings are the pay walls around keys to randomly dropped chests, you get way more chests than keys. and the pay wall around the amount of alts you can have (5 for free) and inventory space.

I spent over 100 hours over few weeks in WvW, and have since written it off. I have no plans of touching it until it is severely overhauled. However sPvP and PvE is very fun still. There is also a serious problem with hackers... something I've not seen hurt an MMO in nearly 8 years. Expand

But when I get bored, I know I have an amazing game in my computer which enjoys me for hours!
The best in this game, in my opinion, are the graphics ( Best visual desings in the MMORPG history), an amazing Soundtrack, the huge PvP *World vs World, thousands of players against thousands of players), and the different localitations of Tyria, like beaches, forrests or freezing mountains.
The worst for me is the small characters you can have, only 5. Sometimes, the dungeons gets too long and too difficult. The level decreasing in some areas is absurd.

    • There is a long standing a gap between the action present in modern RPGs and MMORPGs, Guild Wars 2 is the next step in bridging that gap.

    • The dodge mechanic present in the game helps to add to that "action" feel, requiring the player to keep moving while concentrating on their positioning in the combat at all times.
    • Though the combat system is a great improvement over more traditional MMORPGs, the game still bears many of the trappings that are a given part of any MMORPG.
    • Containing both a traditional arena based PVP and more open area mass battle grounds offers a wide range of PVP options where though not always competing on equal grounds, even new players are given a chance by being boosted to max level.
    • Though grinding is not required, population levels in certain parts of the game may cause certain dynamic events to either not trigger or be impossible for an individual to complete thus throwing off the expected leveling path. Otherwise the quest system is great.

I don't like MMORPG's. But I do like RPG's. And I see Guild Wars 2 more as a RPG than a MMORPG. The gameplay is perfect. No Quests that go like this: "Kill X and bring Y to Z". They all just Pop up and if you dont do them, some other guys do.
The graphics are awesome, too. The music is made by Jeremy Soule, who also made the music for Skyrim. The sound-effects are really good, too!

This is a very well made MMORPG, easily one of the best. The world and combat design is top stuff and exploration is the best on offer. It's amazing how much quality content you get without a monthly fee. It's still a bustling game, very active and PVP is a lot of fun. Get it. You've nothing to lose and all to gain.

GW2 is great for casual players. It does feel like WoW at times... a lot of the time imo. Nothing new here, and really low difficulty. But for a one time purchase fee, you will get far more content than any single player rpg out there, so you can't really complain. It seems real tactical teamwork, and cohesive communities (FFXI and EQ for example) are a thing of the past in the MMO world, which begs the question, why are we playing these games online. Sometimes i think games like this (GW2, WoW, SWTOR etc) could be easily be single player games with instanced co-op, like Demon's/Dark Souls. Like i said, at least this one is free. But all in all this is a good game- not better than the first but still as good and different enough to not be a rehash. Possibly my favorite game of all time. A great RPG with amazing combat, character growth, and very friendly community. This is the only game I play nowadays and it fulfills all my desires for a video game: to play with others or on my own, to feel like I'm progressing and becoming more skilled at the game, and to learn of a great story and world within an extremely beautiful game.

Amazing game. Superb artwork, great depth and incredible value for a one time fee, Yes, there are promotions aimed at getting people to spend money in the shop, but these are largely cosmetic or convenience based - the game is in no way pay to win. Good community, vast world and enough content to keep interest for many, many hours.

My MMO romances are turbulent. I tried to turn to Final Fantasy XIV (due to my sentiment to FF), ESO (due to my sentiment to Skyrim) and WoW (due to my sentiment to Warcraft 3), but they always fell flat for me in comparison to Guild Wars 2. I return to Tyria on regular basis and this is officially the only MMO game I don't refuse to play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In a genre dominated by World of Warcraft and other similar games Guild Wars 2 is refreshingly different. It ditches static tank and heal group gameplay for action based gameplay. No subscription fee means the game does not have to introduce tedious but psychologically addictive gameplay to keep its player base. I've played the Guild Wars series for a long time (2000+ hours) and I consider it to be one of the leading MMORPG's for me. For a game of this level, that's now been made free to the public - you can't go wrong.

I've played the Guild Wars series for a long time (2000+ hours) and I consider it to be one of the leading MMORPG's for me. For a game of this level, that's now been made free to the public - you can't go wrong.

    STORYLINE:
GW2 has a fairly large level cap (80) that doesn't make the main story feel like a grind-fest. There's 5 races to choose from and with 8 professions to choose from (9 if you have DLC). Choose your characters path and their life up to this point and prepare for a decent character development narrative. Customise your character's outfit from armour pieces found in the world or bought from the in-game store. Individually change the dye of a certain piece of armour, hide that awful helmet/ shoulder piece you only are wearing for stats and put a fancy skin on your sword, it's time for an adventure.

Want to take a break from the main campaign? Take on of the many side quest to gather experience for your character on the map, you might be rewarded with coin, an illustrious item or maybe some lore. Don't want to do side quests and want to farm bosses instead? You can join groups on trains to farm world bosses for that sweet loot! Your adventure is what you make of it.

    COMPANIONS:
Whether you are playing with friends or whether you are playing solo, there's a high chance that you'll encounter a NPC character - be it in the main campaign or a world event. These companions have fairly decent AI and will assist you in your battles. Some may even provide some world lore for you, immersing you into the game. As for representation, there are LGBTQ characters throughout the game who you can interact with.

    WORLD DESIGN:
Guild Wars 2 has a massive map for you to explore, from the bustling cities to volcanos, mountain ranges to plagued beaches. The area in which your in is vast and expansive for you to explore without it feeling too restrictive. Sometimes this is a downside, especially if you need to cross the map to get to a mission - it's going to take a hot minute.

In regards to lore, the lore is vast and plenty. Some of it relates to the first game, which may be a downside if you haven't played GW1 before but most of it can be found in-game from NPC's or books. If it isn't in there, consult the GW2 wiki as it's probably on there.

    TRANSPORT:
If you don't have the DLC content (Path of Fire/Heart of Thorns), your main mode of transport is waypoints and your trusty feet. If you do have the DLC content, take a look at gliders and mounts as an interesting way to travel. Want to fly on a flying carpet after you jumped off a cliff? You can do that. Want a giant red boar instead? You can do that too.
Tired of the glider and want something to spice it up? Take a ride on a raptor! Take to the skies on a Griffon! Bounce with the Springer!

    CONTENT:
Sometimes, you have to wait for a new expansion to be released if you have finished the campaign - which limits what you can do if you are a story-driven player. There's also the possibility of some quite heavy bugs that will affect the new release, which will impact gameplay (ie, not being able to progress through a certain part, character's being unable to interact with a certain item etc) and can be annoying.

There are many ways to have an adventure in Guild Wars. Play to your heart's content.

Immersive world and somewhat compelling story. You'd find yourself caring for the characters in the long run. I like how it was fun and does not feel like you're grinding too much to achieve something impossible.

Fantastic MMORPG for people that want a break from traditional gear treadmill. Community is very nice (except PUGs). For veteran players there is not much to do now, all the interesting game modes like PVP or WvW are basically the same since years, Anet simply forgot about them. If you are new player, you have hundreds of hours before you so enjoy.

It's the only MMO that has been able to have me more than a week. I'm not a great fan of the genre but i think it has cool mechanics and a very interesting world.

If you thought it would be boring to adventure on this large map, you are wrong!! Because in this game, when you reach a certain level, you can complete quests that will gives you a riding animal called that makes your adventure is very amazing. For example, griffins that can fly you through the vast world of the game, raptors that bring you to walk around with high-speed and the stingray that in this game are called skimmer that can bring you adventure underwater. Collecting level in this game for me is a lot of fun because it has a unique leveling system unlike any other game and very freedom. If you feel that doing quests in other games that quests will have the same loop and same pattern, that is something that will never happen in Guild Wars 2 for sure, cause this game has many quests for players to choose. The monsters in the game have different habitats according to the map and there are many different types of them, which will make your quest and your adventures more wonderful. Battles are more tactical, skillful, and very fun than any other MMO too. The interesting thing about this game is not just the gameplay but also the story of the game. Playing this game for me is no different from watching a good movie because the story is rich and interesting. So, if you are looking for a MMO game to play, you shouldn't miss out on Guild Wars 2!!! Everything you do in the game gives you experience which means you can level up however you want.
The zones are breathtaking and with the implementation of dx11 they are even better now.
There is fishing now and is one of the best fishing games in MMO I have seen.
The raids, fractals, dungions, strikes are very challenging and fun.
The PvP (5v5) and WvW (80vs80vs80) are great way for you to compete with others.
There is no boring questing where you need to talk to someone and then go back to return the quest, you just do your thing in the open world and you get rewarded via the mail when you help the guy in that specific area.
The friendliest community I have ever seen.
Everywhere you go there are waypoints that when you unlock them you can travel to them from the map whenever you are.
The loot system is not shared, everyone gets what he deserves, the drop is personal. The experience is personal, The kills are personal. Everyone helps one another because they win from helping you.
There is a downed system, where you fight for your life.
    The crafting system is awesome.
    Everyone can res everyone.
    Everyone can heal everyone.
The profession class you choose depends only from your play-style and nothing more.
There are 12 mounts in the game and every mount does its own thing that helps you traverse the terain and they feel awesome!
The best gear you get can take few weeks to get but after that you can use it forever because there is no gear treadmill. Max level is 80 and after you level up you just have fun. Do your thing. Explore, fight, gather, craft, fill objectives, command a squad, help people, roleplay, etc. The options are limitless and some people are afraid of that.
Legendaries are a long term goal that for a single legendary it can take months or a year even. Legendaries can be armors, weapons, trinkets, backitems, sigils, runes. They are quality of life items that enables you to swap stats or change visual effect of the item without the need of transmutation charge.
The gem store is the way that the game can get some cash from the player but you can buy everything from the gem store, converting gold to gems from the shop. At some point because the game doesn't have fee, you'll feel guilty for playing so much without giving money, so you'll start buying stuff just because of gratitude. Only the expansions are payed but buying Path of Fire, gives you free Heart of Thorns expansion. End of Dragons expansion just released and is super strong, everyone loves it.

I think the base game and the quality of the story (if u really force ur way into the lore) can grip u fast! Once ur into the lore its over...u will love it and u won't be able to get away from it. I did stop and start this game a few times before I seriously got into it. I am playing it more casually now but still love it (in 2018). After ten years playing Lord Of The Rings Online I spend way more time plaing GW2. the main reason? In GW no one is going to ask me to go kill 6 of something, then find 6 of something or wash 5 towels (an I Kid You Not LOTRO quest),

This game has thrown out the quest hub system entirely. Instead you get a scripted personal story combined with open world events. This is so refreshing.

Combat is fluid and the combination of builds you can put together gives great variety.

It still looks great and gets new content on a regular basis. The Free To Play model is very generous and you csn go to level cap without paying a cent or being dramatically inconvenienced. The post level cap continuation just requires buying an expansion.

If the two decade old quest hub MMO gameplay is draining you of the will to live then give this a free try.

The community is so awesome (especially to new players!), the customization is amazing, gameplay and combat is exceptionally smooth, and the graphics and lore are top notch. GW2 has made a powerful impact on the MMO scene, confirming years of expectations. Stunning presentation and revolutionary design guarantee a thoroughly enjoyable experience. However, it’s not flawless, nor complete. The beautiful vistas, the massive PvP element, the rich leveling experience- those can offer hours of gameplay, but the endgame is desperately seeking for enrichment. [November 2012]

After spending fifty hours with GW2, I have a lot of praise for ArenaNet's work and the way it changes up some of the typical trappings of the MMO. And yet, I find myself thinking less and less about it each day. It's not a declaration against the product, mind you, but simply a fact that this game still is very much an MMO, and your enjoyment will directly relate to how much you enjoy the genre. For many who were hoping for a clean break from MMO design philosophy, Guild Wars 2 will probably come across as a slight disappointment. It pushes the genre slightly forward, however, and could lead to even further development in the future.
