Very unique brawler/metroidvania. Great combat, music, platforming, interesting bosses, and extra challenges make it a great game. The cartoon graphics and brawl combat make it stand out from others of the genre. Difficult but rewarding challenges.

Able to remap keys so I could use keyboard. Main game took 9 hours. With extra challenges and achievement hunting, it took 21 hours.

Got it free, but it is definitely worth $5 to $10. Highly recommended.

Guacamelee is a pretty fun metroidvania. I loved its setting, its use of Mexican aesthetics, and the fun platforming and boss battles. Truth be told, the game doesn't have that much depth, but it does what it does with excellence.

First off, if you're interested in metroidvania/platformer games with upgrade-gated exploration with backtracking and a satisfying combat system (especially if you're looking to experience it with friends as it has up to 4 players local co-op) - you owe it to yourself to play this game as it counts towards the top games of the genre, in my opinion.

In this game, you start out as an agave farmer with barebones fighting capabilities whose world gets turned upside down and is set to become the greatest Luchador to make things right again - save the world from evil. Pretty cookie cutter premise but the way it is getting delivered, mixed with the art style, visuals and humour of the characters, makes it a truly memorable and funny experience.

The tutorial and general explanation of the abilities you have and will obtain during the game is superb as they build up on the principles of using the abilities in a really smart way. Here it's important to point out that in this game, the new upgrades/abilities you get double as a new way to explore the world and open up places you couldn't reach before AND can be used in the combo brawler fighting system as a means to deal hefty damage and make crazy combo chains happen.
First, you're faced with a simple challenge and a tooltip with instructions that makes you use your ability in a very basic way, but the game builds upon those challenges with ever-so-slightly harder tasks that never feel out of place or break the curve of the learning experience. Hands down one of the best ways to introduce people into the mechanics of your game. They also come together beautifully in the mid- and late-game for some truly remarkable platforming/combo challenges.

The fighting system in this game adds to it nicely as the new abilities open up new ways to beat enemies up (quite literally). The combo brawler fighting system is a breath of fresh air for the genre and honestly one of the strongest selling points for this game as coupled with the ability to roll and jump makes for some really satisfying gameplay as you watch those combo streak numbers rise up (there's achievements for these, too, so you can feel extra rewarded for making them happen!).
Death is not a harsh punishment in this game and is a wise decision in this game as it can be very fast-paced and merely puts you back to a point in the room you've just died, making for quick re-attempts at even the most tricky platforming challenges. If you intend to close the game and continue later, you're gonna be at the last check/savepoint.

The world and level design is great and comes together really nicely as each area has a distinct art style and theme to it. As in all metroidvanias, it's basically one huge map you're bound to explore in bite-sized segments and each area feels fresh and never overstays its welcome. There's no out of place spikes in difficulty, which I mentioned in the way you explore upgrades earlier already, and all the challenges feel adequate for the amount of practice and challenges you've had to do before you face a certain obstacle. New options to traverse said world also make re-exploring the areas for collectibles and secrets very pleasant. There's plenty of check/savepoints which double up as places to get upgrades and costumes at - another genius decision. Costumes can be obtained through obtaining a certain in-game currency to style up your character and all come with their own bonuses and drawbacks. (You also don't have to be afraid to finish the story/game before haven't unlocked everything as the game gives you the option to revisit your save file to collect whatever you could've missed.)

The soundtrack felt pleasant and pumped you up for upcoming big encounters. It really fits this mix of Mexican/Luchador feeling this game is trying to convey to its players and helps you immerse in the world of this game greatly. It makes you want to keep going and keeps you entertained in this magnificent world Drinkbox Studios have crafted here. Heck, I find myself humming or having the soundtrack stuck in my head when I'm not playing the game, so that should say something about how catchy it really is!

The only small complaint I have about the game is a certain type of enemy that isn't really used more than a handful of times that have (clearly telegraphed and the game informs you about that) attacks that you can't avoid through dodge rolls which seems to go against the grain of the combat system they have in place. They're a tad bit annoying but nothing that's going to halt your game progress as they really only appear a handful of times during the game so I don't feel that this should have any weight.

All in all, I hope this review could help you make a decision about whether you wanna pick up this game or not and if you do, which I sincerely hope, I wish you a lot of fun!

The discount for owning the original is only 66% with makes it cos't 2,5€ more than on ps4. Don't know if it's because valves 1$=1€ policy or what but I bought a pc to get cheaper games. For faulty pricing I have to take a couple of points.
The game itself is great and if you haven't played the original you should try this. Best platforming betemup since 90' and it has co-op!

So if you haven’t played guacamelee before, this is the version to get…
This metroidvania took me around 6 and a half hours to complete and can be played with up to 4 player cooperatively…
After hearing so many great things I as excited to go back and play this game before guacamelee 2 came out, and boy am I happy I did…
admittedly guacamelee took so time to grow on me.. I didn’t instantly fall in love… at first I was a little confused why everyone loves it so much… sure the art style is nice and the game is full of humor.. But the gameplay, the platforming... it all felt super simple and button mashy… but as the game goes on it just gets better and better…
no 2 hours of this game feels the same… the game slowly spoon feeds you new abilities that are mostly for traversing, allowing you to go back to past areas if you’d like for its collectables to help upgrade your health or endurance, but these also double as combat moves for the challenging and constantly engaging combat moments…
the game increasingly gets challenging with both its platforming as well as with its enemies it introduces.. So you never feel like you’re just going through the motions... every minute of this game is engaging and keeps you hooked… there are costumes you can unlock to challenge you more or balance the character more towards your play style.. This is such a complete package from start to finish, a world that entices you to explore for its secrets, so many moments I would laugh out loud at the dialog, decently challenging bosses...
I actually felt like bosses were more of the time to relax and breathe before you’re thrown back out into platforming through this world… guacamelee is wonderfully placed and is a must play game for platforming fans or metroidvania fans alike
I give GUACAMELEE! SUPER TURBO CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION
    an 8.5/10

Game play is also very original. You'll enjoy discovering all the abilities and rediscovering new ways to wonder through the map.

It's overall just a fun game. Not too long, but with all collectibles and challenges you'll get a solid 10 to 15 hours out of it.

There are moments at the end game with so many enemies you will get stunned locked which is unfair.
I did find some platforming rooms to be tedious but there is a sense of accomplishment in figuring it out and beating the room.
The final two bosses were difficult as they move quickly and have an attack range far greater then yours. Although I can admire the mechanics implemented to test the player on their skill sets.
Overall it took e 8.5hours for the game with some extra side quests done and recommended for people whom are up for the challenge.

    Visuals - 8/10 - (Very Good)
The game is quite beautiful and unique, hardly leaving anything for desires. Even though it is a small world, the areas are quite different from each other giving you a feeling of freshness. The game becomes even more beautiful and fresh when you unlock the ability to change between dimensions and you can experience everything from a new perspective.
Since the game doesn't support 21:9 the black bars can become quite distracting and pull you out of the game's immersion.

    Gameplay - 8/10 - (Very Good)
Guacamelee! has some mechanics which are not new to the genre but are executed quite well by mixing your combat abilities with the platformer sections and puzzle-solving.
When it comes to combat the game is quite responsive and smooth, feeling really good to control and hardly ever getting in your way when attempting a combo or string of attacks.
The platforming is well responsive and challenging and is one of the game's strongest assets, completing the platforming areas fell quite rewarding and fun.
All the enemies follow certain patterns of attack and becoming accustomed to them is a must, bosses have unique and fun patterns to master, that makes you feel quite rewarded for defeating them.

    Story - 6/10 - (Fine)
The story is quite simple and the classic damsel in distress trope. The girl who is Juan's love interest gets kidnapped by a group of villains and the hero has to save her by defeating the evil bunch. It is simple, but Cohesive and cute enough to serve as a background to the game.
