I don't know what to think about this game. I played it for a while but I didn't find it interesting enough to continue. You keep doing the same thing and the story wasn't good enough. The gameplay side seems varied but I couldn't get into it. I'll try again later. Even if it's not a bad game, I didn't like it very much.

Had much higher hopes for this game.

This isn't a bad game, the devs achieved what they set out to do but the result is meh? I wasn't invested in the story and the combat drags on, there weren't any particularly challenging bosses except for a couple but my biggest gripe is, it's just not very fun? Meh combat, meh story, meh animations. There isn't anything to grab you and get you to

I tried multiple times and even clocked in about 15-20 hours and just couldn't force myself to finish it. IIRC they also don't have faster gaming speeds, how insane is that for a grind game? This is a let down from the people who created Titan Quest nearly 2 decades ago and that game had game speed and way more interesting story and made the grind tolerable.

TL:DR: Grim Yawn, good ARPG in general, but rather tedious with some (wasted) potential.

But since everyone is praising it, I'm gonna bash it and name some cons. My main issue with the game is that loot system is meh, there's too much

My main issue with the game is that loot system is meh, there's too much of it, and 99% of items are trash, they won't give you any dopamine you are usually getting in ARPG's when some epic loot drops.
Endgame starts at lvl 90+ or even 94, too many build-defining items or sets are not available before 94, which is a major con IMO.
There's no Paragon or CP or any "carrot on a stick" system in game after you hit lvl 100, in a game where you have to reach near-max level to start clearing endgame... lol.
Which makes all the grind rather meaningless, and you have many things to grind here: faction reps, recipes, mats, bounties, devotions procs levels.
Given it's not a MMO or online game with economy, co-op, deep crafting system, or seasons, it makes even less sense.

I'd say it's still a very solid ARPG game, it's like polished Titan Quest on steroids, yet it's lacking something... maybe t's game design is far from perfect. It's just boring and not rewarding to play it.

The game encourages exploration due to the many hidden places. At the same time, it is less linear than Titan Quest.
The very familiar character development system has been pleasantly spiced up with constellations, which together with the addition have a strong influence on the character and it is worth stopping there a bit and rethinking the development of our constellation.
Personally, I am very pleased with the illusions of equipment that allow you to change the appearance of items to others that have already been met. This way, we don't have to worry anymore about having to throw away the old wide-brimmed hat because we've found some weird wreath that doesn't match the look. A few moments and a handful of coins and the look was changed.
The world is interestingly constructed, and the plot is so good that you want to read the notes you find. And just for reading notes is also exp.
The last (but not the only) thing worth paying attention to for a moment is the faction system that determines relationships with groups. Technically, it is based on completing tasks to be able to perform new, more interesting ones, and access to better equipment at the factional merchant. The counter works the opposite for monsters. Depending on the group, they don't like us more and more, for which we get the possibility of additional rebirths (in the case of a special difficulty mode where we only have one life).
I recommend hack'n'slash fans, hat, revolvers, occultism and a good soundtrack.

Firstly: the semi-open world is hand crafted which makes it look more like a real place instead of those randomly generated maze worlds. And no, it does not affect replayability, doing the same mazes with a few different turns in DIABLO is not great either. There's so many secrets and optional crypts here, it gives SKYRIM a run for its money.
The monster types are superb and there's so many of them where other ARPGs lack variety. I lover the world and the setting, it's pure post-apocalyptic dark fantasy, gritty and without the stupid cartoonish look of TORCHLIGHT or DIABLO 3. None of the light-heartedness, it's DARK, just the way I like my fantasy. That's another huge plus.
The class system is unique: pick one at level 2 and another (if you like) at level 10 to create a new class, then take skills from each branch. Love it.
Weapons and armor are a mix of classic fantasy (plate armor, swords, morning stars) and 18/19th century (Western style dusters, blunderbusses, six-shooters and shotguns). The mix really works here. I've beaten the game 6 times already, and unlike the DIABLO series, I keep coming back to this and finding new hidden areas, new items and new monsters that I missed on previous playthroughs.
The DLCs range from awesome (ASHES OF MELMOUTH) to good (CRUCIBLE, an excellent leveling tool) to meh (FORGOTTEN GODS - new Oathkeep class is great, but the desert sucks), still all worth a buy.

I loved the post-rock soundtrack which perfectly fits the overall game mood.

On paper everything is great and there are only a few drawbacks which mostly relate to personal taste. In this genre, I used to love the lore, my epic weapons and memorable boss fights (Butcher in Diablo 1). In Grim Dawn, there are so many bosses, so many “epic” weapons and so many dialogues, yet I would not call them memorable. This may be a bit nitpicking, considering they are things you can only find in old hack n slash games (Diablo 1 and Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption to name a few). But what makes a hack n slash game perfect for my taste is missing in Grim Dawn (the same way it’s missing in PoE, recent Diablo titles, Torchlight etc).

In any case, Grim Dawn is a great game overall. I would easily recommend to anyone looking for a modern title in this genre. It’s up there with Path of Exile.

First things first: this game doesn't hold your hand. Secondly, it's immersive as hell. You come into a shattered world, at first, seemingly being ripped apart by a singular faction, the usual baddies that you have to chop, shoot, peck, flame, and just all around wreck their stuff. But midway through, you find another faction is at it too, wanting to add their portion of misery. Now, you can pay attention to the clues, because you aren't outright told what all is happening, you get it in portions. This is good storytelling, no exposition buffet, dumped on your lap.

So while you're getting a good helping of plot, you battle enemies. Standard stuff you may think. Least I did at first, grew up on D2 LOD and dabbled in Torchlight 2, so it seemed straightforward. But then, then you go to pick your class (which starts at level 5, not straight away - the people know thing or two about easing you into the gameplay) and you have several different classes to pick from, and if you got the DLC, you get a second class to choose from starting at level 10, to make a third class. Then it hits you, oh man, it isn't going to be as simple as click-until-it-dies. No, no you have to think about how you want to flavor click-until-it-dies.

Now as you're pondering these choices, you see these levels and all this loot dropping, cause you figure the game is really generous and this seems to be pretty rich and wonderfully done level design for a rogue-like, but it isn't a roguelike. No, people took time and effort to design the levels, from the look to how you the player should experience it. And goddamn did they hit it out of the park! Not only did the good people doing god's work at Crate Entertainment know a thing or two about level design, but they knew how you were probably feeling as you're progressing. Usually you get tossed into the deep end, a whole bunch of crap thrown at you at once, but then the level opens up, breathes a little, before you wade into the next bunch of hell. And oh man, hell is where we are.

From the journal snippets, to letters, to orders, you get a sense of what this world was like when hell-broke-loose. You get a sense and it logically makes sense, how people reacted to seeing their world fall apart. And you think, oh man this is great, but I guess I can skip it. And sure, you can, but one of the things that's helpful is that when you ever wonder about what should be motivating you as you move along in this world, what keeps your character wanting to wade into the mess again, these letters, journals, detailing how everyday people, how their world has been interrupted by a bunch of jackoffs who's only reason, it seems, to invade in the first place is that they were bored of their realm of existence and have no qualms ripping humanity a new one. But not today!

So, as you progress, adding spells and skills to fireoff in a middle of a fight, navigating twisting, richly textured environments that pay you big time for exploring, the loot, the loot! The loot becomes an element of a fight, so much drops that you have to pick it up just so you can see some more baddies to fight. And oh man, the diversity and the richness of the enemies, my god, there has to be like 70 - 90 different enemies! No recycling of behaviours, with different factions having different units that have unique styles that you have to learn and adapt to. And each fight takes on its own tempo, some you can breeze, others become a frantic, to the knife's edge. Each fight progresses and builds, so by the time you are coming to the end, the fights are bigger, more intense, and everything, everything you have been learning, adapting is building up to these end fights.

And then it htis you. This has been well-designed. This game was made with care, attention, with detail, with love. The game designers and everyone at Crate Entertainment loved what they were making and keep adding to. And they understand what they made. These people are magnificent.

Do yourself a favor, if you like ARPGs or hell, just want a good, rich game with intricate gameplay and a good story, this is it. Buy it, play it, love it.

Grim Dawn is what Diabo 2 LoD fans have been waiting for for so long, a dark, interesting plot, a lot of things, a kind of monsters, music, a kind of classes, you can group character classes. Also, in this game, there is unnecessary many of stats added on every items. As you see there is a simple item which gives you 15% + 300hp when drops below 20%. That's hilarious. Think that, the game' DEVs think they are doing a best hardcore aRPG ever that could be possible. Actually that's a doltishne** but nothing else. Making more complexity is not meaning of doing good game. It's just showing how they are trying to beat other aRPGs but swindle. Some players are thinking this game is providing new things and variety of choices. It's a delusion guys! it's a delusion which you want to make yourself believe! On the other hand, game is good for it's price I admit. Which is only reason I keep play but I know the truth and I'm not lying myself. This game is not better for an aRPG at all. If anything, hardcore should be locked until after the first play-through to force players to understand how unforgiving the game is. I dont know what it was like at launch but this is just fantastic. If you look at the date im writing this review you can see its a while since launch. No bugs. Smooth graphics and great sound effects.
So first of. Technically this game is running superbly.
Story. Well you gotta read alot, not much voice acting except the main quests. So maybe i would drag it just a smidge down here but 9.5 isnt an option on Metacritic.
Game play wise. Well here is where the epic fun begins. They managed (for me atleast) to create the perfect ARPG. The amount of talent builds and the way they are being build is truly amazing. D3 and PoE is lacking in this sense. Well they were good but Crate showed us how it really should be done. Dual class system works perfect. Also bear in mind they constantly listen to the community and makes proper balance to the builds.
Speaking of community. Its really great. If you got a question or have and idea of a build. This community is very non toxic and helpful. Also im constantly on the VERY active "official" Discord channel and if no one is typing anything within atleast 5 minuttes. Then check your internet connection because you must be offline :D
Back to the game. Sometimes its hard for me to figure out what makes some things truly great. I just know this game does it for me.
Lastly i just want you guys to consider how few people with few resources made this masterpiece, is by itself a accomplishment worthy of going down in history.
Buy this game. Support the team in any ways possible and hope for a fantastic future in this game or the next from these guys.

Horrid game. It literally has no endgame. When you hit level 100, you will have nothing stronger to kill, and will be running crucible for better gear, for absolutely no reason, because there's no other challenges.

Crucible is the only endgame, it's the best spot to farm gear, so there's no reason to do rogue dungeons, or anything else. Trash game, and a pure cash grab.

It builds upon it's Titan Quest foundations and improves upon almost every aspect. The setting is done beautifully, soundtrack is great, gameplay is addictive and all the mechanics are well thought and rewarding. This is one of the very few games that can keep you playing even after finishing main story, which by itself is very good as well, though manages to have unsatisfying endings for both base game (especially) and expansion, but Ashes of Malmouth finally finishes the story properly instead if cutting it suddenly without any real ending like the base game does. There is a lot of secondary content to find along the way and a lot to read, artistically the game is very good. It was great when playing with second person through LAN. There are two very significant flaws though. One is that if you play in multiplayer like I did in LAN, due to dialogue system that gives you a choice that has consequences, only one player can talk with an NPC at a time, but choices and accepting/delivering quests applies to all characters in group. So essentially you have to read dialogues to other person, because both players cannot display them at the same time, and once quest is accepted the dialogue is gone. Another big flaw of the game is the ancient engine that is completely singlethreaded, meaning that even if you have high-end overclocked CPU, you are still going to suffer from massive performance issues during more intensive and dense scenes because game simply cannot utilize your resources. This is understandable for old games like Titan Quest, but Grim Dawn has 2016 release date. Though on the other hand, all games of this type are having exactly the same issue, just like all MMOs for example, with Diablo 3 being the only exception. Game itself is a 9, it does exactly what a game of this genre is supposed/expected to do and combining that with some considerable artistic/narrative qualities, but aforementioned issues are too extreme to ignore.

    Pros:
    1. A decent skill tree system, something sorely lacking in Diablo 3. Also reasonably cheap to buy back used skill points and change your build.

    2. Masteries make for a huge variety of classes unlike the wooden ones in other ARPGs. Equipment isn't limited to particular classes, so long as you have the attributes and level.

    3. Factions are a fun dimension and there are quite a few of them.

    4. Typical ARPG gold (iron bits that is) expenditures aren't outrageous, minimizing the need for excessive gold farming.

    5. Reasonably simple game design from the get go and no major, jarring changes at the whining behest of hardcore players, much like what happened to Diablo 3, which turned into a huge convoluted mess centered on insanely complex crafting. GD is a good pick-up-and-play kind of game and not daunting for new or casual players.

    6. Very good graphics considering the age of the game engine.

    7. Interesting world setting, partly early industrial technology mixed with typical sword and sorcery
    fantasy elements.

    8. Very good music, unobtrusive ambient music like you'd expect.

    Cons:

    1. Boss fights are very cheap if you're playing a mobility/ranged character. Every major boss is fought in a tiny arena, which is great if your a tank/melee, but irritating if you play a character who depends on mobility.

    2. Overall story arch seems interesting in concept, but is poorly portrayed in the game. I never care about the story at all while playing, but this an ARPG so it's typical. Most boring and anticlimactic end boss and ending ever.

    3. Crafting relics is impossible unless you put thousands of hours in this game.

Grim Dawn is an example how an action rpg should have been, it's a diablo 2 plus, I'm so excited finally there is an action rpg like this, satisfying combat and systems, character levelling, skills and loot system. Without doubt Grim dawn is the best point and click action rpg since diablo 2 !

This game is already better than Diablo 3. I have played less than hour, but I know and I'm sure that it's gonna be better and more enjoyable. I didn't see any gore on youtube, but now I see that it's there. This game is like Diablo 2 made better and upgraded. Diablo 3 is overestimated.

Grim Dawn. Extremely boring!!!!! It's a low-budget, indie Titan Quest rip off, without plot, cutscenes, or voiced dialogues. I could take about 45 minutes before I uninstalled it

The game is fine. I played many hours but it got some serious flaws. First, the game is a bit complex and feel too much a mix of many other games (mostly POE but also torchlight 2, diablo 3, etc.). The complexity add to the dept but the learning curve is a bit steep. I really enjoyed this game. If you liked Diablo series then you will surely like this game too. It's not expensive and it rewards every cent spent for it 100%. Great title for it's genre.

This game is a repetitive grind and should only be played if you are a die hard arpg fan. I put 5 hours into it but just couldnt go any further. All I do is clicking and repeat the same hotkeys for my abilities over and over and over. I gave it 7 because it is a well polished game.

Pretty junk, boring hack and slash. The notes with lore you find are actually interesting, but god I went through one difficulty and basically then had no good skills to take, I kinda reached a peak and just stopped enjoying the game, I did everything on the first difficulty. I even took skills to deal with several enemies better.

The devotion skill system is a mess, not only is it overly complicated, but only a few specific constellations were actually useful for me. I found myself taking resists and boosting my damage multipliers to the point where it's barely worth it, just because the only other decent option was health and health regen, and these constellations are all over the tree. There was no good way to reach the constellations with the heavy requirements without a bunch of completely useless **** and guess what, the fat constellations aren't even that good for my char. Perhaps this was some end-game stuff but I got so bored and the devotion points for my char were so worthless once I got the kraken and my slow/freeze resist. What is the point of making your own char? It just screamed at me to make a char which specialized in bleeding damage or wear a shield or wear an axe. And I really hate games which do this. Oh, and 18 offense or defense is pretty worthless, no matter where it is. Why do some constellations/starter points have entirely useless nodes while others don't?

Honestly, the class system itself I really loved, if only the skills and constellations were more balanced for multiclass system then this could of been an enjoyable game.

Btw, I would of liked if I could hide components and food, that **** is really annoying when you're fighting 5/6 elites.

I guess I'll say Grim Dawn has what Diablo 3 doesn't, but what Diablo 3 does well Grim Dawn doesn't have. Diablo 3 is better.

For me, the most important indicator is always whether I can not stop playing the game. And Grim Dawn makes me an addict! Damn it...

    Pros:
+ There are many similarities to Diablo2 (especially the music !!) as well as Titan Quest (which is made by the same team)
+ Very well implemented spiral of leveling and grinding, you never get too many items (and especially no dull "daily legendaries" like D3)
+ A variety of items to craft, a nice selection of talents and specializations
+ Devotion (something like a "religion") is a very cool skill element, especially since you can bound it to abilities (which you can then also level, similar to gemstones in PoE)
+ The dual class system produces very interesting char builds
+ The story is even more than just "click-away textlines"!

    Cons:
    - It sometimes has its longueurs and partially empty areas (maybe only on "normal game mode")
    - Damage values are not fully optimized: Often you run through monster hordes without taking any damage, only to get a one-hit from the boss (IMO those "final hits" are not clearly predictable)
    - Hits, magic and other abilities are not quite as impressive as in Diablo3 (Blizzard still is leading in this category)

Conclusion: Grim Dawn is a very good Hack-n-Slay game - one of the old school. I even liked it more than Age of Conan and Torchlight. For me, it is on a par with Path of Exile and Titan Quest.

Grim Dawn is clearly without doubt what diablo3 should have been like. The best ARPG out there right now.
    Great mechanics!
    Great skillsystem!
    Great Loot!
This postapocalyptic world is beautiful goth design in its best, you dont see effects spam the whole screen like POE and Diablo3 (epilepsia ,headache games) , stuffs just feel more Diablo2 in all ways but better.

Grim Dawn is a very interesting H&S aRPG, dark and atmospheric.
There is sufficient variety of skills and point development and the items are nice and worthy.
Crafting is also a part that makes sense , gives more options and depth.
Graphics could have been better. However you buy a complete game for a cheap price comparing to the initial 60euro price for D3 that was a payed beta crashed game.

First off, let me preface this review with a bit of disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Titan Quest and I already had hugely high hopes for this game, and as such, may be slightly biased. That said, I'll try to be as objective as possible in the following.

Grim Dawn is a terrible, gloomy place. From the moment you're introduced to the world, you come to realize that your place in it is tenuous at best, and merely existing in it is a herculean feat of survival. Bad things are happening, and ancient horrors have been released, possessing humans and raising their corpses to do their bidding. Not only that, but other, competing factions have also begun to appear, protected by fanatical cultists. It's with this background that you're introduced, as a possessed human that's captured and hung, but survive, once the Aetherial possessing you leaves your body. It's then that you're forced out into the wilds, to face the undead, roving bands of gangs, cultists, twisted wildlife and other potent horrors that just want you dead.

There's a nice selection of classes, and a progression system that well rivals even Path of Exile's. The loot is rewarding, the atmosphere suitably gloomy and captures the precariousness of it all. The abilities are nice, and the world itself is a mixture of medieval meets steampunk, with firearms, melee combat, magic, and many other abilities tied to how you modify your gear, or specific items.

The graphics convey just how **** this world is, and are sharp, with pretty solid effects. The sound is good and in dungeon areas, will genuinely creep you out. The enemies are broadly diverse, some lacking in difficulty, while others just continuously spam abilities with no end in sight. (This is where I dinged a point. I didn't like it in Fallout 4, either.) The music was also suitably atmospheric, and composition was something I'm enjoying quite greatly.

All in all, I view it as a worthy successor to Diablo 2's ARPG crown, and may even rank it higher than I do Path of Exile, which I previously had viewed as the heir apparent prior. If you're a fan of dungeon crawling, loot, theory-crafting, gear modification, replayability, and especially if you liked TQ, get this game. The amount of entertainment for the price cannot be understated, for the content you receive.

This is a game for arpgs hardcore fans, not for a 2016 gamer customer base.
The graphics and UI are ridicolous... gameplay is not fun, ending with spamming the same skill over and over.

I don't care if this is an "Indie" game with 8 programmers, u gotta compare apples with apples: this is a game, so let's judge it for what it is.

If u are an average gamer, there are tons of games better than this, especially in 2016. If u love arpgs and going crazy deep with all the calculations and builds, then I guess this is the game for you.
Really regret having spent 30 USD for this game...

Overrated Diablo Clone. Deserves probably around a 6-7, but i had to counter the fanbois and the game's developers inflating the score...

Production values are pretty low, and has quite a lot of bugs. It also gets boring fast. The visuals are bad, and unless you have nothing else to play or are addicted to ARPG grinds, you will drop this very soon. Unless you are a die hard Diablo

Favorite Thing: The gameplay is pretty fun and chaotic.
Least Favorite Thing: The story takes a back seat and it only functions to move things along. There's very little of it.

    Enjoyment: 6/10

This modern Action RPG is quite something. It aims for longevity both in terms of content updates and build and skill system depth, not the least from the innovative dual-mastery system reminding me of D&D of years past, giving rise to no less than 15 (!) different classes. For example, a Nightblade/Soldier becomes a Blademaster. This doesn't overwhelm though. The developer has managed to create something deep and complex, yet with a welcoming surface to lure you into the wonders of theorycrafting.

The style is a steampunk, gritty atmosphere that feels adult. Comparing this to the obvious game Diablo 3, Diablo 3 feels a bit like an action movie with huge explosions where this plays more like The Walking Dead as you step out to roam the abandoned towns in the post-apocalyptic surroundings, with rarely seen graphical detail. I read diaries to try to understand, I wade through zombies and worse, and I try to make the best out of of a grim situation indeed.

There is also an air of roguelike gaming surrounding this game, made even more evident from developer posts directly referring roguelikes, and certain end-game content. I have never heard of such references from an Action RPG developer since Diablo 1! It's great to see the developer recognize the genre's roots and bring out the fun of those games in this grim packaging of metal, wood, occultism, sweat, and blood.

Further making this game unique among its peers is that the single player mode can be paused! Unbeatable support for quick, urgent breaks if someone is calling for your attention in real life. It also comes with mod support to expand its longevity. Both features rarely seen today because they are incompatible with heavy online dependency, something this game supports but does not require. These special features completes this game's certain spirit. A spirit I have not felt since a long time indeed.

A vast handmade world where each inch feels unique with its own environment, sometimes I stop on an abandoned farm only to see the beautiful sunset... Grim Dawn scratches the right action RPG itch with a plenty of loot to hoard and a decent skill system that offers plenty of options to build the perfect demon-blasting hero. The only problem is the lack of a proper endgame, as the non-randomized maps and locations becoming too familiar too fast. [May 2016]

Truly, Grim Dawn represents the modern gamer's slot machine, where three cherries are a set item drop and three 7's are a jackpot of a story that never comes to fruition.
