    This game is what Diablo 3 should have been, the depth on developing your character, the choices you can make, the style of the art, the darkness in the story, everything is fine.

    I would have wanted a little more flesh on story, but I have so good hopes for a grim dawn 2 to see the light with a larger team, that would break the gaming industry.

    Fantastic game, worth much more than the paltry price tag of 25$ or whatever it is.

    700 hours played here since November 15 or so and I would of picked it up earlier if I had of known about it prior. Game is made by a very small team of Devs and the product they have achieved is amazing and deserves to be recognized. Only reason I didnt give a 10/10 as the game needs slightly more

    People always talk 'D2/3 and Path of Exile and Torchlight' when speaking aRPGs but now Grim Dawn is easily to be included in the lists as games you must own or you are just missing out.

    Theres not even a question of whether 'you will regret it buying it' you are simply missing out by not owning the game

    Grim Dawn is a real alternative to D3, if you don´t like the latter, or didn´t cope with the skil system of PoE.
    Don´t expect Cinematics, for those go to Marvel Heroes :-)
    As a single player ARPG I would recommend it for peole,who liked "Diablo 2", "Sacred" and "Titan Quest". Multiplayer is a bit tricky, if you´re not playing via Steam, and even then you only see "Steamfriends" .

    Grim Dawn is, appropriately enough, a dark fantasy action-RPG, a Diablo-like from the makers of Titan Quest and its expansion, Immortal Throne. It exchanges the sword-and-sandal world of Greek, Egyptian and Chinese myth of its predecessor for a world of iron, blood and gunpowder where humanity sees itself trapped in a post-apocalypse wrought by two mighty armies as despicable as they are really damn old: the body-snatching Aetherials and the blood-happy Cthonians.

    Grim Dawn plays much like Titan Quest, but with a wealth of quality-of-life improvements that make it a much more enjoyable experience overall. It notably features a reusable portal spell in the vein of Diablo 3 that allows you to access any unlocked Rift in the world, as well as none of that stupid item durability business, so you never need to repair your gear (read: suffer an arbitrary drain on your wallet). The most you lose on death is a small amount of experience, which can be retrieved from the headstone that marks where you last died. However, I have only played on normal mode so far and this may change later, I do know that you suffer a 25% penalty to your elemental resistances on elite, and a whopping 50% on ultimate. In addition, there is an NPC in the very first town that you can purchase skill point refunds from for a flat price that quickly becomes inconsequential, at least on normal. However, you cannot refund points spent on your mastery level itself (more on that in a moment), which increases your base stats and unlocks new skills at certain thresholds. Grim Dawn also generally feels friendlier to play then Titan Quest or Diablo 2, and at least on normal I felt like I was not punished for experimenting with new skills, and I was consistently dealing very high damage to all enemies as early as a third of the way into the game, to the point of one-shotting most enemies at the endgame. However, the same is also true of normal difficulty in Path of Exile, which quickly kicks you in the balls on higher difficulties if you do not have a "good" build- but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

    Grim Dawn retains Titan Quest's unique class system. You begin the game with no class at all, but are quickly given a choice of skill trees the first time you level. You are then able to pick a second tree not long thereafter, combining any two skill trees to create the hybrid class you want. I went with Demolitionist first, a primarily ranged tree dealing with explosives, flames, “thorns”-style defenses that burn attackers, and a bit of lightning, with a few points in the Soldier tree for defense, creating what the game calls a Commando. My basic attack was quickly replaced by the ever-useful Flame Strike, which in addition to adding massive fire damage to my attacks, can also be augmented with splash damage, lightning damage and ultimately bursts of magma shards for even more fun. The tree also includes grenades, molotovs, cluster bombs, mortars and mines- a respectable arsenal. Other trees include the spell-blasting Arcanist, demon-summoning Occultist, poisonous, sneaky Nightblade, and lightning-hurling Shaman trees. There is also a special "Devotion" skill web represented by constellations, which you put points into earned from reactivating special shrines found throughout the world. These devotion points earn you minor stat buffs useful to most builds, as well as special skills that can be attached to your normal abilities to enhance their effects. I got a skill called Twin Fang that added a chance for a life-stealing attack to my basic attack, for example. However, I do not currently know a way to respec Devotion points, and you cannot switch your choice of basic skill tree.

    Grim Dawn is respectably long and content-dense, especially for the price. I clocked in over thirty hours, and like most Diablolikes, you spend most of that knee-deep in the bad guys, and it never really gets old- the hallmark of a good game in a genre known for its repetitiveness. Sure, it's a little rough around the edges- the graphics aren't anything special, the voice acting is iffy, and the music, though good, is largely atmospheric, but its mechanically very solid. Crate Entertainment has created an excellent ARPG with much potential replay value that is well worth your time. If you've played any other ARPG before, Grim Dawn will be right up your alley, and even if you haven't, it's a fine place to start.

    Grim Dawn is a very interesting H&S aRPG, dark and atmospheric.
    There is sufficient variety of skills and point development and the items are nice and worthy.
    Crafting is also a part that makes sense , gives more options and depth.
    Graphics could have been better. However you buy a complete game for a cheap price comparing to the initial 60euro price for D3 that was a payed beta crashed game.

I loved the post-rock soundtrack which perfectly fits the overall game mood.

    On paper everything is great and there are only a few drawbacks which mostly relate to personal taste. In this genre, I used to love the lore, my epic weapons and memorable boss fights (Butcher in Diablo 1). In Grim Dawn, there are so many bosses, so many “epic” weapons and so many dialogues, yet I would not call them memorable. This may be a bit nitpicking, considering they are things you can only find in old hack n slash games (Diablo 1 and Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption to name a few). But what makes a hack n slash game perfect for my taste is missing in Grim Dawn (the same way it’s missing in PoE, recent Diablo titles, Torchlight etc).

    In any case, Grim Dawn is a great game overall. I would easily recommend to anyone looking for a modern title in this genre. It’s up there with Path of Exile.

    One thing I really like in ARPGs is when you could play a "Pet Master" - simply summoning and directing your own wild bunch to take care of business while enjoying the scenery and hunting treasures. Grim Dawn is no stranger to that and it's a blast.

    One thing I really like in ARPGs is when you could play a "Pet Master" - simply summoning and directing your own wild bunch to take care of business while enjoying the scenery and hunting treasures. Grim Dawn is no stranger to that and it's a blast.

    I got the game in early access, so I had plenty of time to try out the classes, their flavor and several mix of them (a nice reminder of Titan Quest, that is still one of my favorite game).

    And once the game was finally released, it came with a new class, the Shaman, that just perfectly complement the Occultist to suit my shameless laid-back * style of play.

    So, if you want to give it a try, here are the foundations : start with the Occultist and develop the Familiar and Hellhound branches ; when you reach level 10, jump to the Shaman and go for the Briarthorn branch. You can complement these three with one or two other skills you might find useful or enjoyable. For the devotions, start with Shepherd's Crook.

    The balance between "class" and "skill" levels is up to you. On my own, I usually spend 2 points in the Class (for character stats) and 1 point a Skill ; and sometimes saving points for later. But with the Spirit Guide that can help you re-spec your skills, you can do as you please.

    What you will do most of the time is send your creatures to scout places and eventually attract or attack foes. So bind a key with Pet Attack and be sure that at least Hellhound then Briarthorn are set to Aggressive. What you choose to do with you character (close combat, ranged combat...) is up to you since it matters only 5 to 10% of the time ; you really can experiment here with any combination of weapons, armors and components.

    Nevertheless, since no "build" is made perfect, you might encounter some resistance with "infuriated" enemies than can steal a percentage of your pets' health (thus creating a stasis in combat) ; and of course, champions and bosses - not mentioning, champions that can summon infuriated creatures.

    * Some might say that this style of play is not very ARPG-y since you don't have to frantically click your mouse to hit enemies like in the good old days, but merely give orders to your faithful minions to carry on the good word. Well, since I've been playing ARPGs since Diablo, I consider this style of play a well deserved treat.

    Pros:
    + There are many similarities to Diablo2 (especially the music !!) as well as Titan Quest (which is made by the same team)
    + Very well implemented spiral of leveling and grinding, you never get too many items (and especially no dull "daily legendaries" like D3)
    + A variety of items to craft, a nice selection of talents and specializations
    + Devotion (something like a "religion") is a very cool skill element, especially since you can bound it to abilities (which you can then also level, similar to gemstones in PoE)
    + The dual class system produces very interesting char builds
    + The story is even more than just "click-away textlines"!

    Cons:
    - It sometimes has its longueurs and partially empty areas (maybe only on "normal game mode")
    - Damage values are not fully optimized: Often you run through monster hordes without taking any damage, only to get a one-hit from the boss (IMO those "final hits" are not clearly predictable)
    - Hits, magic and other abilities are not quite as impressive as in Diablo3 (Blizzard still is leading in this category)

    Conclusion: Grim Dawn is a very good Hack-n-Slay game - one of the old school. I even liked it more than Age of Conan and Torchlight. For me, it is on a par with Path of Exile and Titan Quest.

It builds upon it's Titan Quest foundations and improves upon almost every aspect. The setting is done beautifully, soundtrack is great, gameplay is addictive and all the mechanics are well thought and rewarding. This is one of the very few games that can keep you playing even after finishing main story, which by itself is very good as well, though manages to have unsatisfying endings for both base game (especially) and expansion, but Ashes of Malmouth finally finishes the story properly instead if cutting it suddenly without any real ending like the base game does. There is a lot of secondary content to find along the way and a lot to read, artistically the game is very good. It was great when playing with second person through LAN. There are two very significant flaws though. One is that if you play in multiplayer like I did in LAN, due to dialogue system that gives you a choice that has consequences, only one player can talk with an NPC at a time, but choices and accepting/delivering quests applies to all characters in group. So essentially you have to read dialogues to other person, because both players cannot display them at the same time, and once quest is accepted the dialogue is gone. Another big flaw of the game is the ancient engine that is completely singlethreaded, meaning that even if you have high-end overclocked CPU, you are still going to suffer from massive performance issues during more intensive and dense scenes because game simply cannot utilize your resources. This is understandable for old games like Titan Quest, but Grim Dawn has 2016 release date. Though on the other hand, all games of this type are having exactly the same issue, just like all MMOs for example, with Diablo 3 being the only exception. Game itself is a 9, it does exactly what a game of this genre is supposed/expected to do and combining that with some considerable artistic/narrative qualities, but aforementioned issues are too extreme to ignore. Grim Dawn is pretty much darker Titan Quest with some additional features which is good. The only serious drawback is that difficulty is a bit too low at Normal-Elite, especially on 2nd+ playthrough, when you have a lot of good gear from previous characters.

    It is a hack and slash style RPG game. Not the best I've ever played in my life, but it made me spend about 50 hours trying to finish it. Easy gameplay, lots of equipment, normal and not very rich story. It's a game to invest little money, because you get bored quickly, however, I recommend it.

    Grim Dawn is a great ARPG / Hack & Slash game. The graphics are enjoyable and the gameplay is comparable to other old-school games like Diablo. I just started and boom, suddenly over 100 hours in game.

    My biggest complains are the very standard, not to say boring, gameplay/fighting mechanics.
    The skills lack creativity to keep me going on the long run.

    Grim Dawn nails a lot of what's needed to make a good aRPG, but it does fail technically, with some performance issues still persisting after all these years in early access, all of which have been discussed to death on the official forums. It has become clear that these issues cannot be fixed due to the engine, which while heavily modified is still the same engine used by Titan Quest, a game released in 2006. Other than these hiccups the game still lacks some polish, for example the UI is very basic, as are the menus, and while not massively important it does cheapen the product as a whole. Controller support is also very bare right now, but what we do have works well enough considering it was designed by one dev in his spare time. You just can't compare it to say Victor Vran which feels amazing with a controller.

    Where the game shines is replay value and build diversity, there are countless builds and class combinations that make you want to level new character after new character. On top of the fairly deep talent system you also have the devotion system which aids you to further customise your character with strong spells and passives, you can tailor your character to play exactly how you like and it's definitely better than a lot of the competition in this regard.

    Gameplay is fine, it's not the best in the genre but it's far from the worst, it's definitely enjoyable to play but it does have room for improvement, especially when it comes to animations and audio, the bow/gun sound effect will start to grate on you after awhile, this sort of thing goes back to lack of polish which the game suffers from in almost every aspect. But don't get me wrong, it's far from bad.

    Throughout early access there was no voice work at all, but right before release the devs added voice overs for the main story which was desperately needed and it has made a huge difference to the enjoyment of the first playthrough as you get a much better understanding of the story without having to read every single bit of text. But in doing I now miss voice work where it hasn't been added, it almost feels unfinished, and while I understand they most likely had a limited budget and full voice work didn't fit inside it, as I player I do miss it and wish it were there.

    Overall it's a good game that was made on a low budget with a small team, and that's exactly how it looks and feels when playing it. Don't go in expecting too much and you will be pleasantly surprised, if you enjoyed Diablo II you will most likely enjoy Grim Dawn, but if you enjoyed Diablo III you may find some of the limitations in Grim Dawn off putting.

Because of this, I feel like the game needed something to propel it above being generic. Maybe cool new animations, or perhaps a class we have never seen before with new skills, or maybe a great story... something... but there is just nothing there hence why I call it a very "safe" game. They didnt try to improve anything.

    That said, it is nonetheless, an enjoyable aRPG game and the price is right, as it was released for less than $30. In terms of value, it deserves an extra point. This game does have official modding support so there is a chance that mods will help make this game become less bleh, but its still to early to say. If you have a few bucks to spare, you can get it for $25 on Steam and you will be much happier with this game than PoE or Diablo 3 (which sucked the big salami).

    Second, the devotion system is stupidly complicated for little benefit until you have a good handful of points. I spent HOURS staring at the devotion screen, navigating sites to plan my points, and trying devotion skills in game. If it weren't so punishing to refund the points, I wouldn't have worried so much about it.

    Lastly, late in your first playthrough, and from then on, the damage taken gets rather severe. I was playing with another person, so maybe that was part of the problem, but even with points spent to increase health, some defensive/CC skills, defensive devotions, potion spamming, and years of ARPG experience, I felt like enemies hit a little too hard.

If anything, hardcore should be locked until after the first play-through to force players to understand how unforgiving the game is. The graphics for this game are fine and they are definitely enough to enjoy this game from a visual point of view. The atmosphere however is lacking because many areas lack proper background music and most narrative aspects are just plain text.

    ~~~The narrative elements~~~
    I don't know, this is not really a point where this game scores. I like the fact that you can make decisions with consequences, but so far it does not really seem overwhelming influential. The story itself seems to be something purposive and is neither something ambitious nor interesting in general. If it wasn't there, I would not bother that much either.
    ~~~Gameplay and user interface~~~
    It's okay but not outstanding, hacking and slaying feels solid and gives a proper feedback, but the creatures lack diversity. There is just plain attacking most of the time. The character customization and leveling in general makes fun, some animations could have been made better. The game crashes from time to time right after joining the world, when it runs, then fluid. Loot is fine and the game options offer enough to be satisfied. The core gameplay elements feel solid.

    ~~~To the genre~~~
    It is an old-school classic Hack-and-Slay-action-RPG. There is not really something new to the genre, but it does it's job. The loot is fine, the character customization works out and the explorable area is appealing. You hack and slay, but that's it.
    ~~~Conclusion~~~
    I do not know if it is worth the 25 euros, I mean it is a Hack-and-Slay, but only that. It has nothing special to offer, its charm seems to be limited. The creatures you face are more or less all the same, except they got a different visual layout. The story is something that would neither make or brake this game because it feels so irrelevant. If you only care about the absolute core elements of a classic Hack-and-Slay-game, this game might be for you. If you need something more to keep playing, then this game might be the wrong decision.

    This isn't a bad game, the devs achieved what they set out to do but the result is meh? I wasn't invested in the story and the combat drags on, there weren't any particularly challenging bosses except for a couple but my biggest gripe is, it's just not very fun? Meh combat, meh story, meh animations. There isn't anything to grab you and get you to finish the game. I tried multiple times and even clocked in about 15-20 hours and just couldn't force myself to finish it. IIRC they also don't have faster gaming speeds, how insane is that for a grind game? This is a let down from the people who created Titan Quest nearly 2 decades ago and that game had game speed and way more interesting story and made the grind tolerable.

    Game is ok provided you don't want to play with anyone else. Absolutely nobody online, especially if you play HC. I think I average about 3-5 open HC games across all level ranges.

    Gameplay is very good and if you enjoy SP then you will find that you definitely get more than you money's worth. It is just a shame that very few people are playing MP games at this point.

Trust me guys, there is nothing elite about Grim Dawn. It's painfully mediocre. Expand

    While the classes were pretty free and loot had unique abilities that actually impacted did not feel any real desire towards any particular path none of them appealed

    but even that bored me to death.

    Like D1 and D2 and was very inlove with TQ so in theory this should be my type of quest but it did nothing for me could not stand it.
    Maybe ive just played to many diablo clones and a decent clone just does nothing for me anymore or else it lacks a certain charm hard to tell.

    Grim Dawn is a result of misguided nostalgia and disposable income. Its first and foremost error is assuming that Diablo 2 is some crowning achievement of the aRPG genre and needs to be replicated and emulated as closely as possible. Yeah, Diablo 2 is a good game... if you happen to still live in 2001, in which case I'd recommend you keep away from planes and tall buildings for the next few months.

    So what is Grim Dawn? It's a cargo-cult clone of Diablo 2 that does little to move the genre forward or stray from the beaten path. And make no mistake, Diablo 2's style of gameplay has aged BADLY, especially in the single-player department which is Grim Dawn's main focus. The game is an endless grindfest, where you mow down hordes and hordes of uninteresting monsters, that drop uninteresting loot in order to move the uninteresting story forward. Rinse and repeat.

    The graphics and music are good, but the game suffers from serious optimization problems even though it runs on ancient Titan Quest engine. The engine is supposedly the main reason, why the game doesn't play nicely with multi-core cpus and suffers from serious framerate issues, even on high-end PCs.

    Is summary: if you suffer from a bad case of Diablo 2 nostalgia then go ahead and buy this game, though I'm afraid that you'll soon find that your nostalgia is just that... a longing for a time when you were younger, more easily entertained and willing to put up with all sorts of grindy crap. If you don't care for Diablo 2 or any of its "spiritual successors" then STAY AWAY from this game. There's nothing for you here. 2001 was 15 years ago and this game is still stuck in that period.

    My main issue with the game is that loot system is meh, there's too much of it, and 99% of items are trash, they won't give you any dopamine you are usually getting in ARPG's when some epic loot drops.
    Endgame starts at lvl 90+ or even 94, too many build-defining items or sets are not available before 94, which is a major con IMO.
    There's no Paragon or CP or any "carrot on a stick" system in game after you hit lvl 100, in a game where you have to reach near-max level to start clearing endgame... lol.
    Which makes all the grind rather meaningless, and you have many things to grind here: faction reps, recipes, mats, bounties, devotions procs levels.
    Given it's not a MMO or online game with economy, co-op, deep crafting system, or seasons, it makes even less sense.

    I'd say it's still a very solid ARPG game, it's like polished Titan Quest on steroids, yet it's lacking something... maybe t's game design is far from perfect. It's just boring and not rewarding to play it.

    I don't know what to think about this game. I played it for a while but I didn't find it interesting enough to continue. You keep doing the same thing and the story wasn't good enough. The gameplay side seems varied but I couldn't get into it. I'll try again later. Even if it's not a bad game, I didn't like it very much.

    Unbalanced talents, classes, and difficulty make this a frustrating and tedious playthrough. Unlocked abilities are redundant and boring. Environments would benefit from much more variation and less retread of the ‘blighted landscape’ trope.

    Can't believe why this game is so overhyped.

    The only thing you will do is click yourself to death. So repetetive, I can't believe how anyone can find this exciting. Graphics mediocre at best. Cheap dialogues, no story. Menus look like from 1994. The general art style is good, music too. This game is just plain boring, so I returned it. I played Divinity 2 and Pathfinder

    Production values are pretty low, and has quite a lot of bugs. It also gets boring fast. The visuals are bad, and unless you have nothing else to play or are addicted to ARPG grinds, you will drop this very soon. Unless you are a die hard Diablo

I even took skills to deal with several enemies better.

    The devotion skill system is a mess, not only is it overly complicated, but only a few specific constellations were actually useful for me. I found myself taking resists and boosting my damage multipliers to the point where it's barely worth it, just because the only other decent option was health and health regen, and these constellations are all over the tree. There was no good way to reach the constellations with the heavy requirements without a bunch of completely useless **** and guess what, the fat constellations aren't even that good for my char. Perhaps this was some end-game stuff but I got so bored and the devotion points for my char were so worthless once I got the kraken and my slow/freeze resist. What is the point of making your own char? It just screamed at me to make a char which specialized in bleeding damage or wear a shield or wear an axe. And I really hate games which do this. Oh, and 18 offense or defense is pretty worthless, no matter where it is. Why do some constellations/starter points have entirely useless nodes while others don't?

    Honestly, the class system itself I really loved, if only the skills and constellations were more balanced for multiclass system then this could of been an enjoyable game.

    Btw, I would of liked if I could hide components and food, that **** is really annoying when you're fighting 5/6 elites.

    I guess I'll say Grim Dawn has what Diablo 3 doesn't, but what Diablo 3 does well Grim Dawn doesn't have. Diablo 3 is better.

    Also, in this game, there is unnecessary many of stats added on every items. As you see there is a simple item which gives you 15% + 300hp when drops below 20%. That's hilarious. Think that, the game' DEVs think they are doing a best hardcore aRPG ever that could be possible. Actually that's a doltishne** but nothing else. Making more complexity is not meaning of doing good game. It's just showing how they are trying to beat other aRPGs but swindle. Some players are thinking this game is providing new things and variety of choices. It's a delusion guys! it's a delusion which you want to make yourself believe! On the other hand, game is good for it's price I admit. Which is only reason I keep play but I know the truth and I'm not lying myself. This game is not better for an aRPG at all. In reality, it's a mess game.

    Horrid game. It literally has no endgame. When you hit level 100, you will have nothing stronger to kill, and will be running crucible for better gear, for absolutely no reason, because there's no other challenges.

    Crucible is the only endgame, it's the best spot to farm gear, so there's no reason to do rogue dungeons, or anything else. Trash game, and a pure cash grab.

    Grim Dawn scratches the right action RPG itch with a plenty of loot to hoard and a decent skill system that offers plenty of options to build the perfect demon-blasting hero. The only problem is the lack of a proper endgame, as the non-randomized maps and locations becoming too familiar too fast. [May 2016]

    Truly, Grim Dawn represents the modern gamer's slot machine, where three cherries are a set item drop and three 7's are a jackpot of a story that never comes to fruition.
