I freaking love this game! I never expected to get hooked on it, tbh. I got it with skepticism it's gonna be another dull-fest akin to Path of Exile, but nope. Story got me hooked right off the bet, I live the visuals, love the combat, passive skill tree, double class system. I love how different various zones are. Love the DLCs, especially Ashes of Malmouth - very immersive story, zones are fantastic.

First off, let me preface this review with a bit of disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Titan Quest and I already had hugely high hopes for this game, and as such, may be slightly biased. That said, I'll try to be as objective as possible in the following.

Grim Dawn is a terrible, gloomy place. From the moment you're introduced to the world, you come to realize that your place in it is tenuous at best, and merely existing in it is a herculean feat of survival. Bad things are happening, and ancient horrors have been released, possessing humans and raising their corpses to do their bidding. Not only that, but other, competing factions have also begun to appear, protected by fanatical cultists. It's with this background that you're introduced, as a possessed human that's captured and hung, but survive, once the Aetherial possessing you leaves your body. It's then that you're forced out into the wilds, to face the undead, roving bands of gangs, cultists, twisted wildlife and other potent horrors that just want you dead.

There's a nice selection of classes, and a progression system that well rivals even Path of Exile's. The loot is rewarding, the atmosphere suitably gloomy and captures the precariousness of it all. The abilities are nice, and the world itself is a mixture of medieval meets steampunk, with firearms, melee combat, magic, and many other abilities tied to how you modify your gear, or specific items.

The graphics convey just how **** this world is, and are sharp, with pretty solid effects. The sound is good and in dungeon areas, will genuinely creep you out. The enemies are broadly diverse, some lacking in difficulty, while others just continuously spam abilities with no end in sight. (This is where I dinged a point. I didn't like it in Fallout 4, either.) The music was also suitably atmospheric, and composition was something I'm enjoying quite greatly.

All in all, I view it as a worthy successor to Diablo 2's ARPG crown, and may even rank it higher than I do Path of Exile, which I previously had viewed as the heir apparent prior. If you're a fan of dungeon crawling, loot, theory-crafting, gear modification, replayability, and especially if you liked TQ, get this game. The amount of entertainment for the price cannot be understated, for the content you receive.

First things first: this game doesn't hold your hand. Secondly, it's immersive as hell. You come into a shattered world, at first, seemingly being ripped apart by a singular faction, the usual baddies that you have to chop, shoot, peck, flame, and just all around wreck their stuff. But midway through, you find another faction is at it too, wanting to add their portion of misery. Now, youFirst things first: this game doesn't hold your hand. Now, you can pay attention to the clues, because you aren't outright told what all is happening, you get it in portions. This is good storytelling, no exposition buffet, dumped on your lap.

So while you're getting a good helping of plot, you battle enemies. Standard stuff you may think. Least I did at first, grew up on D2 LOD and dabbled in Torchlight 2, so it seemed straightforward. But then, then you go to pick your class (which starts at level 5, not straight away - the people know thing or two about easing you into the gameplay) and you have several different classes to pick from, and if you got the DLC, you get a second class to choose from starting at level 10, to make a third class. Then it hits you, oh man, it isn't going to be as simple as click-until-it-dies. No, no you have to think about how you want to flavor click-until-it-dies.

Now as you're pondering these choices, you see these levels and all this loot dropping, cause you figure the game is really generous and this seems to be pretty rich and wonderfully done level design for a rogue-like, but it isn't a roguelike. No, people took time and effort to design the levels, from the look to how you the player should experience it. And goddamn did they hit it out of the park! Not only did the good people doing god's work at Crate Entertainment know a thing or two about level design, but they knew how you were probably feeling as you're progressing. Usually you get tossed into the deep end, a whole bunch of crap thrown at you at once, but then the level opens up, breathes a little, before you wade into the next bunch of hell. And oh man, hell is where we are.

From the journal snippets, to letters, to orders, you get a sense of what this world was like when hell-broke-loose. You get a sense and it logically makes sense, how people reacted to seeing their world fall apart. And you think, oh man this is great, but I guess I can skip it. And sure, you can, but one of the things that's helpful is that when you ever wonder about what should be motivating you as you move along in this world, what keeps your character wanting to wade into the mess again, these letters, journals, detailing how everyday people, how their world has been interrupted by a bunch of jackoffs who's only reason, it seems, to invade in the first place is that they were bored of their realm of existence and have no qualms ripping humanity a new one. But not today!

So, as you progress, adding spells and skills to fireoff in a middle of a fight, navigating twisting, richly textured environments that pay you big time for exploring, the loot, the loot! The loot becomes an element of a fight, so much drops that you have to pick it up just so you can see some more baddies to fight. And oh man, the diversity and the richness of the enemies, my god, there has to be like 70 - 90 different enemies! No recycling of behaviours, with different factions having different units that have unique styles that you have to learn and adapt to. And each fight takes on its own tempo, some you can breeze, others become a frantic, to the knife's edge. Each fight progresses and builds, so by the time you are coming to the end, the fights are bigger, more intense, and everything, everything you have been learning, adapting is building up to these end fights.

And then it htis you. This has been well-designed. This game was made with care, attention, with detail, with love. The game designers and everyone at Crate Entertainment loved what they were making and keep adding to. And they understand what they made. These people are magnificent.

Do yourself a favor, if you like ARPGs or hell, just want a good, rich game with intricate gameplay and a good story, this is it. Buy it, play it, love it.

It builds upon it's Titan Quest foundations and improves upon almost every aspect. The setting is done beautifully, soundtrack is great, gameplay is addictive and all the mechanics are well thought and rewarding. This is one of the very few games that can keep you playing even after finishing main story, which by itself is very good as well, though manages to have unsatisfying endings for both base game (especially) and expansion, but Ashes of Malmouth finally finishes the story properly instead if cutting it suddenly without any real ending like the base game does. There is a lot of secondary content to find along the way and a lot to read, artistically the game is very good. It was great when playing with second person through LAN. There are two very significant flaws though. One is that if you play in multiplayer like I did in LAN, due to dialogue system that gives you a choice that has consequences, only one player can talk with an NPC at a time, but choices and accepting/delivering quests applies to all characters in group. So essentially you have to read dialogues to other person, because both players cannot display them at the same time, and once quest is accepted the dialogue is gone. Another big flaw of the game is the ancient engine that is completely singlethreaded, meaning that even if you have high-end overclocked CPU, you are still going to suffer from massive performance issues during more intensive and dense scenes because game simply cannot utilize your resources. This is understandable for old games like Titan Quest, but Grim Dawn has 2016 release date. Though on the other hand, all games of this type are having exactly the same issue, just like all MMOs for example, with Diablo 3 being the only exception. Game itself is a 9, it does exactly what a game of this genre is supposed/expected to do and combining that with some considerable artistic/narrative qualities, but aforementioned issues are too extreme to ignore. I loved the post-rock soundtrack which perfectly fits the overall game mood.

On paper everything is great and there are only a few drawbacks which mostly relate to personal taste. In this genre, I used to love the lore, my epic weapons and memorable boss fights (Butcher in Diablo 1). In Grim Dawn, there are so many bosses, so many “epic” weapons and so many dialogues, yet I would not call them memorable. This may be a bit nitpicking, considering they are things you can only find in old hack n slash games (Diablo 1 and Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption to name a few). But what makes a hack n slash game perfect for my taste is missing in Grim Dawn (the same way it’s missing in PoE, recent Diablo titles, Torchlight etc).

In any case, Grim Dawn is a great game overall. I would easily recommend to anyone looking for a modern title in this genre. It’s up there with Path of Exile.

The game encourages exploration due to the many hidden places. At the same time, it is less linear than Titan Quest.
The very familiar character development system has been pleasantly spiced up with constellations, which together with the addition have a strong influence on the character and it is worth stopping there a bit and rethinking the development of our constellation.
Personally, I am very pleased with the illusions of equipment that allow you to change the appearance of items to others that have already been met. This way, we don't have to worry anymore about having to throw away the old wide-brimmed hat because we've found some weird wreath that doesn't match the look. A few moments and a handful of coins and the look was changed.
The world is interestingly constructed, and the plot is so good that you want to read the notes you find. And just for reading notes is also exp.
The last (but not the only) thing worth paying attention to for a moment is the faction system that determines relationships with groups. Technically, it is based on completing tasks to be able to perform new, more interesting ones, and access to better equipment at the factional merchant. The counter works the opposite for monsters. Depending on the group, they don't like us more and more, for which we get the possibility of additional rebirths (in the case of a special difficulty mode where we only have one life).
I recommend hack'n'slash fans, hat, revolvers, occultism and a good soundtrack.
