These cars are equipped with both standard brakes and an emergency brake, and the ability to NOT floor the gas at all times. Try it. Once you ease up on the throttle a little and practice your braking, it gets easy to dominate the simple circuit, but fret not, raising the difficulty will provide plenty of new challenges. This is the street version of DiRT 2, and when people say it should be "like dirt", they should take note that it is by the same publisher and pretty much a clone of DiRT2's engine with a fresh set of textures and no truck/buggy racing. What this game gives up in diversity of vehicle class, it makes up for with beautiful, fun tracks, and rewarding, precision driving. Expand

I would REALLY like to give this game a 7.5. It's pretty fun, but falls short on a few expectations - the handling can be just plain silly at times. Sure, I know I *SHOULD* be playing this on a racing wheel in the opinion of many. . . But I wish it would at least work on the keyboard. Graphics are fancy, wish there was a better variety of cars & sounds. The game is very buggy on Le Mans with extreme lag despite having a very nice system .. (GTX 480, i7 920 @ 3.6GHZ, 12GB 1600MHZ RAM). I just play the "race day" (arcade mode) for quick action and gave up on the storyline after hitting the challenges presenting by playing with a keyboard. Expand

The game is a lot of fun (more then TOCA imo) and I have given it an 8 because it is fun, easy to play, all about racing and it has great looking graphics. I have to admit that I miss some things. Car set-up is not included and, allthough I am not someone that spends hours tuning all possible settings of a car, I would rather have seen it included. There are not so many cars that you can buy (45 I believe) and that feels limited when you're used to 500 cars or more in, for example, Gran Turismo. For me it's not a big issue as you usually will only drive a few of those 500 cars. You have to navigate through the menu's with the keyboard so the bad implementation of the gamepad is definitely a negative point (but it works great while racing). GRID is a great racing game that provides reasonably realistic car behavior that is not as hard and unforgiving for mistakes as simulation games (GTR) but much better then arcade racing games. Expand

I am a big fan of Codies, especially after having played their rally games. The original Dirt was an absolute masterpiece and outshines later titles like Dirt 2. The Collin McRae series before Dirt was also a lot of fun. I bought this game with high expectations, but what I have experienced is quite discouraging.

To begin with, there is no qualifying mode - so you end up wherever the game feels fit to place you. This means that you have to work your way up to first position from last (which can be as far back as 20th position for touring car races) - all in a span of 2 measly laps. This requires you to drive in a very aggressive manner to score points... let alone a victory. I'd accept this if Grid were an arcade racing title, but judging by the reactions of the competitor's AI, the game tries to punish you if you push too hard. If you blast inside an apex so as to overtake, expect the car next to you to plow directly into your flank. This is rarely recoverable, at least if your competitor hits you with their nose - however, if they hit you side on, you will definitely lose all steering and end up spun out or in a wall. Collisions generally result in your car being thrown off the track, whilst the car you collided with suffers absolutely no consequence.

The game encourages you to turn up the difficulty level, so you generally feel compelled to play in 'Extreme'. At this difficulty, you notice that competitors in the same class (and even the same car) have much more grip in an apex than you do. I find that I reach the absolute maximum of understeer whilst the car in front of me (in many cases, my team-mate, who's supposedly in the exact same car) continues to accelerate and pull away through the apex. The only way to catch up is to cheat and cut through the apex. At the limit, even decelerating won't correct understeer - you are required to brake in order to get back in line. This poses another problem - cars behind you will dart past and maintain their line at much higher speeds than what you will find possible.

Overall, I'm very glad that I didn't buy this game sooner. I was contemplating purchasing it at the start of the year, where it was priced in the $30+ bracket. Just manages to be worth the $6 dollars I spent on it now.

Arcade, sim, whatever - you just shouldn't be able to take a 90 degree corner at 200 km/h! The 'kitchen sink' approach to different classes and races is all well and good for variety, but it rings even more of the 'jack of all trades' criticisms leveled at TRD3. The engine sounds are uninspired, force feedback is surprisingly limited given the range of feedback on offer in competitors titles, and the graphics (although beautiful at times) look remarkably unrealistic due to the amount of bloom and brown tinting. Codemasters don't seem to have taken on board criticism from DiRT racers in this regard. I'm disappointed with this release, which seems to stray even further down the marketing-driven path of all candy, no substance. Expand

Right in the beginning you get your hands on on a mean monster cars with hundreds of horsepowers, and trying to keep one on the road is difficult, unless you turn on the driving aids. This game puts you to race on a unfamiliar track, making the first few laps total trial by error. When you struggle to keep your ride on the tarmac, opponents flash past you from left and right. And that is frustrating. Without the aids the car handling is really weird. You don't know when you are about to lose traction before it's too late to react. Cars don't feel to have any mass at all, and even the Lemans cars with huge downforce tend to go the corners in a four wheel slide. With driving aids on, the cars go on rails and your only duty is to sit on the accelerator and change lanes to avoid the opponents. The drift events are even more painful, controlling the rear end of your vehicle with the accelerator is vague, resulting in many spins and suddenly ending drifts. A chance to try out your vehicle and examine the track before the race would be nice. The AI is borrowed from Flatout 2. Tracks are so narrow that the AI cars totally cover the whole corner when they drive in a pack, forcing you to brake too early or just smash into them. On the other hand, when you brake too early, the opponents usually don't bother to avoid hitting you. In straights the AI still tends to cover the whole width of the track, leaving very few spots to overtake. At least the graphics look sleek and don't demand too much much from the hardware. In my opinion NFS: Underground 2 is still the best arcade style driving game for PC. Expand
