These cars are equipped with both standard brakes and an emergency brake, and the ability to NOT floor the gas at all times. Try it. Once you ease up on the throttle a little and practice your braking, it gets easy to dominate the simple circuit, but fret not, raising the difficulty will provide plenty of new challenges. This is the street version of DiRT 2, and when people say it should be "like dirt", they should take note that it is by the same publisher and pretty much a clone of DiRT2's engine with a fresh set of textures and no truck/buggy racing. What this game gives up in diversity of vehicle class, it makes up for with beautiful, fun tracks, and rewarding, precision driving. Expand

I would REALLY like to give this game a 7.5. It's pretty fun, but falls short on a few expectations - the handling can be just plain silly at times. Sure, I know I *SHOULD* be playing this on a racing wheel in the opinion of many. . . But I wish it would at least work on the keyboard. Graphics are fancy, wish there was a better variety of cars & sounds. The game is very buggy on Le Mans with extreme lag despite having a very nice system .. The game is a lot of fun (more then TOCA imo) and I have given it an 8 because it is fun, easy to play, all about racing and it has great looking graphics. I have to admit that I miss some things. Car set-up is not included and, allthough I am not someone that spends hours tuning all possible settings of a car, I would rather have seen it included. There are not so many cars that you can buy (45 I believe) and that feels limited when you're used to 500 cars or more in, for example, Gran Turismo. For me it's not a big issue as you usually will only drive a few of those 500 cars. You have to navigate through the menu's with the keyboard so the bad implementation of the gamepad is definitely a negative point (but it works great while racing). GRID is a great racing game that provides reasonably realistic car behavior that is not as hard and unforgiving for mistakes as simulation games (GTR) but much better then arcade racing games. Expand

I am a big fan of Codies, especially after having played their rally games. The original Dirt was an absolute masterpiece and outshines later titles like Dirt 2. The Collin McRae series before Dirt was also a lot of fun. I bought this game with high expectations, but what I have experienced is quite discouraging.

To begin with, there is no qualifying mode - so you end up wherever the game feels fit to place you. This means that you have to work your way up to first position from last (which can be as far back as 20th position for touring car races) - all in a span of 2 measly laps. This requires you to drive in a very aggressive manner to score points... let alone a victory. I'd accept this if Grid were an arcade racing title, but judging by the reactions of the competitor's AI, the game tries to punish you if you push too hard. If you blast inside an apex so as to overtake, expect the car next to you to plow directly into your flank. This is rarely recoverable, at least if your competitor hits you with their nose - however, if they hit you side on, you will definitely lose all steering and end up spun out or in a wall. Collisions generally result in your car being thrown off the track, whilst the car you collided with suffers absolutely no consequence.

The game encourages you to turn up the difficulty level, so you generally feel compelled to play in 'Extreme'. At this difficulty, you notice that competitors in the same class (and even the same car) have much more grip in an apex than you do. I find that I reach the absolute maximum of understeer whilst the car in front of me (in many cases, my team-mate, who's supposedly in the exact same car) continues to accelerate and pull away through the apex. The only way to catch up is to cheat and cut through the apex. At the limit, even decelerating won't correct understeer - you are required to brake in order to get back in line. This poses another problem - cars behind you will dart past and maintain their line at much higher speeds than what you will find possible.

Overall, I'm very glad that I didn't buy this game sooner. I was contemplating purchasing it at the start of the year, where it was priced in the $30+ bracket. Just manages to be worth the $6 dollars I spent on it now.

Arcade, sim, whatever - you just shouldn't be able to take a 90 degree corner at 200 km/h! The 'kitchen sink' approach to different classes and races is all well and good for variety, but it rings even more of the 'jack of all trades' criticisms leveled at TRD3. The engine sounds are uninspired, force feedback is surprisingly limited given the range of feedback on offer in competitors titles, and the graphics (although beautiful at times) look remarkably unrealistic due to the amount of bloom and brown tinting. Codemasters don't seem to have taken on board criticism from DiRT racers in this regard. I'm disappointed with this release, which seems to stray even further down the marketing-driven path of all candy, no substance. Expand

Right in the beginning you get your hands on on a mean monster cars with hundreds of horsepowers, and trying to keep one on the road is difficult, unless you turn on the driving aids. This game puts you to race on a unfamiliar track, making the first few laps total trial by error. When you struggle to keep your ride on the tarmac, opponents flash past you from left and right. And that is frustrating. Without the aids the car handling is really weird. You don't know when you are about to lose traction before it's too late to react. Cars don't feel to have any mass at all, and even the Lemans cars with huge downforce tend to go the corners in a four wheel slide. With driving aids on, the cars go on rails and your only duty is to sit on the accelerator and change lanes to avoid the opponents. The drift events are even more painful, controlling the rear end of your vehicle with the accelerator is vague, resulting in many spins and suddenly ending drifts. A chance to try out your vehicle and examine the track before the race would be nice. The AI is borrowed from Flatout 2. Tracks are so narrow that the AI cars totally cover the whole corner when they drive in a pack, forcing you to brake too early or just smash into them. On the other hand, when you brake too early, the opponents usually don't bother to avoid hitting you. In straights the AI still tends to cover the whole width of the track, leaving very few spots to overtake. At least the graphics look sleek and don't demand too much much from the hardware. In my opinion NFS: Underground 2 is still the best arcade style driving game for PC. Expand

If you think they are plowing through you like "kamakazee", it was probably your own faulty move that caused that to happen.
You can't really punch the gas, and hope to make it to the end. That is almost impossible. If possible, you wont have much of a car left.
Let me get something straight about the gameplay mechanics. You'll have people say that the game isn't 100% on realism with physics, etc. Like most other racing games that have tried. But this game tried very hard, no perfect, but it's real enough on my terms. And for a game that feels so real (looks so real) still difficult to control at times, it's still a blast to play. Trust me when I say, you'll love the feeling of completing a race in this game, unlike any other racing game.
There is a couple frustrations of getting a handle on the cars. But if your a patient but quick minded thinker, you can get something out of this. It took me about 30 tries or so to finally win the first race and get my rookie licence. But the ending result felt great. And, I wont lie, I was one of the more damaged cars. I

To keep it short: Cars have no weight whatsoever, which doesn't allow you to "feel" the power under your butt (turned all driving assists off and pro-mode on). If you lose it's because you didn't dare to go through that sharp left corner with 150 mp/h.

Thankfully the AI doesn't cheat; as in no opponent magically closes the gap or drives like it's on rails, and in fact your opponents can suddenly lose control, spin out, and potentially cause a huge crash. Also, each race you are a given a limited amount times to rewind and avoid that car wrecking crash. I think the only thing you can criticize this game for is its limited amount of car customization, since you are limited to choosing the color, the color pattern, and the sponsors' stickers. At least we could have been given the option to choose the rims. Expand

Simply the best racing game ever created. Very realistic physics engine, one of the best out there. Bill A. there complains about the physics because his computer cannot handle the game. I don't know how it's possible to make a better racing game. In fact, I'll bank on the ONLY way to make a better racing game is in a VR simulator. 10 out of 10!!

First, this game is best played with an Xbox controller, so PC purists should be warned that it doesn't work as well with a keyboard. But if you do have a controller and an OK pc, you'll be treated to a really finely tuned experience with good graphics, though, as it's a 2008 game, they're a little blurry and not up to Dirt 2/3 standards. The game itself is all about the race, like they said in promos. The handling of every car feels different, and the strength of the game comes from the subtlety of the handling, not a stable of cars. In fact, you don't get a stable of cars. But that turns out to be a good thing, because it forces you to focus on mastering the controls, cornering etc, all for 4+ classes of cars. Muscle and Club GT couldn't feel more different, and you can't get that kind of experience outside of this game on PC, so here's hoping Codies sees fit to come out with a sequel in the next few years. Codies, the silent PC users who love racing games thank you for sticking with our console, because without you our platform's options for racing would be pitiful. Expand

Pretty fun racing game. It was also the game that got me into racing games. Arcade goodness, with slick menus, great visuals and fun gameplay. Get this game!

Great graphics and very good car 3D models. Better to play it with a Steering Wheel, if you use the keyboard to play with a Racing Lamborguini, you'll spin off because you can't take control of the car with the gas pedal to the metal. The most weird thing is that is easier to drive Dirt 2 that GRID with the steering wheel. This is one of the best racing games I have played on PC and it supports to 8 players in LAN mode. The Le Mans 24 hous race is amazing (day/night transition). It would be better if you can tune as detailed as the Gran Turismo Series. Expand

I will try to set it simply. I downloaded Grid just before 2 days . Since 2008 i didnt play a race game so fantastic!!!!!
I cant find words to describe what Grid is all about, but believe me.
Dont spend any money on ANY other race game , except from Codemasters games. They know how to deliver great stuff. Lately i bought Sift 2 , my God awfull game , no adrelanine , no speed . I'm a 36

A bit arcadey in its handling but once you grasp the handling, this will knock your socks off with multiplayer over LAN. Some of THE most fun is have had with multiplayer racing!

My opinion is, that is are most epic arcade racing game ever. Everything here is good: graphics, physics, controls and other stuff. A lot of cars, a lot of game types. Awesome!
This is the best racing game ever!
P.S. No one of the NFS's is even no close to this game by gameplay and joy.

I would give it a higher score but the multiplayer lets it down just a bit because you have to wait so long between races. Other than that I play it with the keyboard which some complained about and find it perfect, I didnt change any settings and have no trouble winning racing using only keyboard.

It's a solid racer, but not the TOCA 4 I was waiting for. If CMR and TOCA are to converge on the same franchise, and Codemasters is going to carry on replacing the careful balance between fun and simulation they had on their previous titles (DIRT included) it might be good news for the fans of arcade racers, but bad news for everybody else. A very solid and fun game, and one of the few PC racing games that seems to work well with a keyboard. Graphically impressive, and with multiple racing genres, GRID will keep a lot of people entertained. The game's biggest issues are a very unstable frame rate (even on a good computer) and a less than spectacular multiplayer mode. The single player campaign is excellent, however.

OK I only tried the demo, but I believe I have enough to write a little comment. This game is not the first to use the flashback feature, but maybe the first to make it popular. The graphics is over average, the handling is typical arcade, and the feeling of driving is really there. However if this game had a little bit more seriousity to it, I think it could have hit the roof. Anyways, I OK I only tried the demo, but I believe I have enough to write a little comment. One thing is for sure, don't play it with a keyboard, the car will go in a unending spin at every key pressed... said that, this game is awesome, graphics are cool and crashes are fantastic. Much better than the latest NFS games out there. Get a gamepad or a steering wheel first.

While the game's focus is clearly on driving, managing sponsors right will double or triple the income of winning an event and is a fun minigame on its own; making lots of money is crucial to entering higher-level, ultra-costly racing series.
  3. Codemasters' racing studio know what they're doing and have again got the key elements right.
