Going Rogue did a few things really well. Mainly I was very impressed how they gave you some choices that were actually morally suspect. Many times in visual novels the choices that take you down the bad route are things like being rude where in Going Rogue their bad route involves straight up murder; assault; and some borderline sadism. Many times in visual novels the choices that take you down the bad route are things like being rude where in Going Rogue their bad route involves straight up murder; assault; and some borderline sadism. What I wished for was for those to actually lead to some story consequences but by the end I never had to answer for many of them. One could say that this is more realistic as many times in life people go unpunished for their bad deeds so I won’t say that this lack of consequences ruined the game for me or anything like that. Now don’t get me wrong, there are consequences in game but we’re talking about people acting different around you or being shut off from certain routes rather than actual punishment. The story itself was fairly good with the exception of being way off on how policing actually works. That being said it’s a fictional story and they frame it in such a way I can forgive it due to some rules they set up. For instance graduates of the academy don’t get to choose their department based on how well they scored nor do they achieve the rank of detective right away but in the game they mention that this is a privilege recruits get in this world if they finish top of their class so they do attempt to explain it. One thing I will also say about the story was it seems a little rushed in it’s pacing. In that I mean the whole thing takes place in a very small time frame. The characters were enjoyable and I had more than enough to root for. I do wish that Ameila had been elevated to main character or main romance option as I enjoyed interacting with her the most. The dialogue was well done. The game employed a good QTE system for their fights that did enough to make it different from some other games in the genre. The music was well done but a bit repetitive. The clothing detail was good as was the object detail. The animations were well done although a few lewd scenes lacked them. The lewd scenes themselves had good variety and choice. The menu was very nicely designed and stood out from many visual novels as a lot of them don’t customize it much. The game was lacking some options that other visual novels had though such as the option to skip dialogue or go back.
I played Going Rogue on Linux. It never crashed. I noticed one single grammatical issue where it said “why you lunged” when it should have been “why did you lunge”. You can manually save whenever you want and there are fifty four save slots. Alt-Tab didn’t work.

I thought Going Rogue set itself apart as a unique game in the adult VN genre. It’s story, while a bit rushed and weird in parts, is solid and has good characters and dialogue. The animations and lewd scenes are well done. The productions values are great. I wish that the game would have explored the dark side of the main character more in terms of how it effects him and the world as they seemed to at the start but what i got was still good. I finished my first play through of all seven chapters in four hours and twenty one minutes. I paid $17.63 CAD for it and feel that is more than a fair price.
