IMO This is in my list of favourite games. Yes, it actually is.
When I first played the game I saw all these consoles which I never heard about or at least know them very well. I started making games and really enjoyed the game. Then I started having interest on retro gaming. I played a lot of NES games for funz and realized that the only thing matters in a game is gameplay or story.

TL;DR Very good game, deserves it's 9€ or whatever.

Incredibly fun game. What makes me enjoy it the most is the settings. Its an amazing feeling for me to run a game dev company,if you wont like that then its pointless to buy this game. The gameplay mechanics are maybe a bit basic, but I like them and the game has made itself well worth the money.

Its also a very relaxing game. You can just jump into it and play for 10min if you have time

EDIT: I rewrote this just to mention that they have now done some major updates for this game. Fixed the most common issues such as lack of feedback!

It's definitely fun to create your own games and get good reviews from it, but at this current moment, it offers too little to play forever. It is a game in development, so I expect great things to come from it in the future, as a game where you can become Nintendo and make mature games and take series like Star Wars is absolutely fun, interesting, and bloody funny can go a long way in the case of an indie game. Oh, and it's only $9.99 worth it indeed if you like this sort of game, but again, it needs updates to become a fabled game like Minecraft. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is VERY, VERY GOOD. Not perfect but, such a great game. A lot of people complain about it's resemblance to Game Dev Story, but to be honest the game play is so much more addictive and fun compared to GDS. And all the choices when you make your games is amazing. The game play also keeps rolling by bringing in new consoles and offices, as well as research to create better games. It also follows what happened in real life, for instance Sega failing to create a very good console and stopped making them. Even when the special events stop, end game is still made fun by being able to create your own consoles. It's fun to make up your own challenges and goals as well, to make the game play more challenging and interesting. The thing that makes this game imperfect is the small 'story' as so to speak, there should be more special events, more consoles, and the ability to actually see your competition, and know how to get over them. People think of this game as a simulator, it's not, it's a tycoon, clue is in the title. Expand

It's a great little simulation on the struggles that game developers face. While it doesn't cover everything, it still provides a bit of insight. It might not be very addictive at first, but it gets progressively better and faster as it goes on. It's far from perfect, but it's still good. 7/10

Fantastic game. I appreciate the actual difficulty of it. I've yet to discover any easter eggs or sell 100 million copies. :)

We do not have to be hooked up to a social network to play it.

    Thank you!

This game is a fairly pleasant tycoon game that takes me refreshingly back to the days of theme hospital and similar such games. Easy to play and surprisingly addictive, it's very much an enjoyable experience chartering the history of the game development industry from garage to multi-faceted tech giant.

While it won't go down in history as as memorable as some previous simulation games, it nonetheless is an enjoyable and cheap experience that can easily notch you ten hours of playtime even with just one playthrough.

The game rewards experimentation and proper planning, and while never being the most complex of titles it has just enough depth for me to enjoy. Managing your staff is important, specialising them through training is a big factor, and specialising your company with smart research leaning you towards certain genres can mean you can reliably create long-development AAA titles with high scores and sales. It takes some tinkering to get perfect.

As for some of the issues other user reviewers have stated, pace can be modified, pick a 42 year playthrough if you want a slower, more paced journey through the game. Control over review scores is possible, much of it is logical and can be deduced from what you would logically think would make a good game. Beyond that, there is research which slowly uncovers the nuances of all the mechanics, and gives you a more in-depth overview, this information can me carried over onto new playthroughs so you can gradually build up a database of what works and what doesnt. If you're too impatient for that, there are various wiki articles that lay out the mechanics in plain sight and show that it's not quite as "Mystical" as it may seem.

Replayability is not stellar I admit, but I am already considering a third playthrough there is the desire to improve and do it better, to conquer the industry at a quicker rate. If you really take to the game you could easily be set up for a good thirty-forty hours of fun even if you do not, one playthrough could still be ten-odd hours of fun.

All-in-all I heartily recommend it to fans of simulation games, or those just curious for something a little different, for all the calls of it copying game dev story it still is practically one of two game development titles that I am aware of, and in an ocean of same-old-same-old titles that is still a pretty unique snowflake.

Game Dev Tycoon is a gem of its genre. I literally played countless of hours just for this game. Especially the new update they've made on the game. Some may find it boring but I find this game really entertaining. Especially when you see the game you've made got a high freaking score. That's just so satisfying to see.

The nice range of options for staff and research make the game very immersing and I can't help but play this for 8 hours at a time. But I do wish their were some more features in this game.

Features such as starting at whatever year you want after completing the game once or features like playing a scenario where you pick a company like Maxis and play out the company's history.

And their are some things I have wrong with this game such as the graphics and gameplay making the game seem like a Facebook game at times, also the game is very repetitive, you are basically doing the same thing over and over and it does get dull after a couple of days of playing the game/

Don't get me wrong I love this game, and I would happily give this a 7/10 overall.

I only planned to have a quick first play to see what it is like and ended up going to bed at 3 in the morning.

I started creating games which were great then thought I found some cookie-cutter settings for each Type/Genre but ended up 20k in the red, nearly going bankrupt before making my first official sequel which got rated 9.75 making me my first 20 million.

The up and downs are exciting and you will always look on how you can do better than before, trying out new type/genre combos or go completely out of your comfort zone and end up surprised how well you did.

You are always given enough information with each game release to further your knowledge on what type/genre worked or didn't, which age group responded best, what platform the game worked well with or if adding more level details than sound was the right choice.

As you progress more and more features get enabled either through levelling or through Research, giving you a lot more to do with each new game combination you design.

Along the way you also get a glimpse of the actual History how Consoles came and went again (names slightly changed off course but identifiable nonetheless.

I don't think words can easily describe how nice this game plays you will just have to go and see for yourself.

    I'm giving this game a solid 9/10.
Why not 10/10 you may ask. Well, there is no such thing as perfection but this game comes so close to it I might even say 9.75/10.

Perhaps you'll buy a license for Vony's Playsystem 2 These are not spelling mistakes, these console names are in the game.) With many different game possibilities, such as popular ones like Fantasy/RPG to Wild West simulation game (bleurgh!) it's up to you.
And, unlike many other games, it actually gets better in the later stages, with lots of new oppurtunities popping up all over the place. The random events are very also well implemented.

Obviously, the creators at Greenheart Games poured their very heart and soul into the production of this game and an awesome anti-piracy stunt) However, the main fault I found with it is Replay value has much to be desired. No matter what way you look at it, you've probably done everything of interest in your first playthrough. That said, It's not that bad, and you'll probably get a couple of games out of it.

Overall, Game Dev Tycoon is certainly worth the money, and DEFINITELY worth yours.

The game in basic is fun.
Fort a small indie game you can pick up any play is does well.
Although i can't see you being able to put 50 hrs into it it is still a great game. But once competed the story and have almost unlimited money it becomes a tad boring but worth the money spent on it.

It is easy to be tempted to judge this game against other games of the 65 dollars worth, but this would be misleading. And when looking at the fact that I only had to pay a measly 8 dollars for the total development, it is actually a pretty good experience all together.
You can clearly see that the developers took a good hard look at what game developing means to them and have translated

You can clearly see that the developers took a good hard look at what game developing means to them and have translated that in a light hearted, fun game.

A few little hick-ups are bound to give the player a bit of a frown; certain angles are only half-way developed or counter-intuitive, while other areas look overly complicated.
Balancing the different ratings (which are never shown in the game but judge with a vengeance in the game's algorithms) makes it hard to get high ratings over and over. This is especially intensified by having the games judged against the best game you have made yourself.

In the end I can definitely see how the game gets repetitive after a while, but introducing R&D Labs and Console design helps to break the repeating patterns at key moments. That being said, I don't know whether I would replay the game after I get to the 100%...

As the game has many great aspects of game development, it still requires many updates, tweaks, and add-ons to really resemble the real-world game development perspective. No doubt, this game has an extremely high potential for success. But like saying, the game is basically like Don't Starve. It has a great catch to it, only does it die over time. You get bored after developing your 20th game. If there isn't a good review to encourage you to continue then you will likely to leave it untouched for a couple of months later. It's a really nice touch to brainstorm ideas for next generation consoles, I have to give credit to the developers for that. However, they should consider adding more freedom to the game like having the ability to edit price for your games, or have more than three bars on developing stages to give a more complex and elemental game for you to create. That saying, it's still a fun game to play when you have a MacBook Air or another Ultrabook that doesn't chip in mainstream games like Tomb Raider or Call of Duty.

    Conclusion

Game Dev Tycoon is Green Heart Games' first game ever. And I think it's underrated for its category, considering that there are plenty of other indie games that have a more repetitive concept. The game receive a very very high potential to success. With a few tweaks and updates to have more freedom and content to the game, it will be a plentiful success for the game and its developers. And although, it won't be as a hit as Minecraft, it still remains as one of my favourite indie games of all time.

Graphics 9/10 (It's great, clean, vivid, and simple 2D Graphics)
Gameplay 7/10 (Develops overtime and becomes challenging, however it's repetitive)
Realistic Perspective 6/10 (Great deal and study of the game-console history, however more tweaks and updates should do the job of increasing game realism)
    Overall (Not an average) 8/10

Game Dev Tycoon is a good game, with a fatal flaw. A really bad fatal flaw. (Which won't apply to people who play by the wiki).

This game simply must provide the player with some proper feedback, maybe even some graphs, surveys of the audience, just something that means you can play with the mechanics. You want to explore these further mechanics, but you become scared, as one bad game plunges you into bankruptcy. Living on the edge may be fun, but not if 'living on the edge' prevents me from not just making the same three games over and over, and failing whenever I try something new.

So hey, have fun for a few hours, but if you want GDT, I seriously recommend waiting for a sale.

Unfortuantely it's not that good Instead of more, it feels like less. You don't seem to have the same level of control or different ways to do things as you do in GDS. Also, review scores seem to be pulled from nowhere, and there are some issues with balance research points are way too hard to get for example. It's hard to figure out what you can do to improve from within the game itself, and your own thinking, and that's a major sin for a tycoon game.

Most importantly however, it's just not that fun. It lacks the charm of "Game Dev Story", there's little incentive to keep on playing, and that's the biggest let down :(

So there we have it. It's only a fiver, I suppose it's almost worth it, but I'd rather pay Kairosoft a tenner for a desktop clone of their game!

Game Dev Tycoon starts off with an interesting take on the successful Game Dev Story giving you more control over how you develop your games with sliders and other features.

First off the gameplay is good but very repetitive, all you do is adjust sliders for different genre. When you get your reviews they tell you next to nothing on to improve your game in the future, but that doesn't matter because by Year 30 I had already all the slider settings down, so the complex equations that everyone say you need to get a 10/10 is false, I got many perfect games (5) in my first playthrough. Which brings me to another point; there isn't much replay value in Game Dev Tycoon, it almost exactly the same thing everytime. There is consoles without much difference and no reason to choose one over the other besides personal preference and market share (exceptions being Dreamvast and Oasis.)

The graphics are okay I didn't like too much, but my friend so your choice on that pretty much, but the sound is a bit different. The music is okay but there's only two tracks that I remember and the sound effects annoying, every time a point goes up there a little blip, but when start getting 10 points it make turn off sound effects.

Speaking of sound effects that is all the options menu; Music (On/Off), Sound Effects (On/Off), Volume, and toggle fullscreen. Besides options there is your basics (Save, Load, New, Exit),Highscore Help, and Achievements. First off Help is useless the game is pretty much self-explanatory and when click skip tutorial when you start up a new playthrough it only skips the beginning tutorial on how to make games, but everything else is still there which is annoying. For Achievements there hefty amount for a game of its size with many secret ones. Highscores is basically all the things you've done are given points and added up, the trick to be more efficient with making games, research and consoles.

Overall Game Dev Tycoon was fun at first, but got boring after a while and the lack of content really weigh Game Dev Tycoon down giving it a verdict of 5, it's alright but names a lot of work and I can't help feeling I didn't $8 of fun out of this, if it was $5 it maybe would gotten a 6.

I'm giving this game the same score I received time and time again in-game. It's not fun, and I don't feel tutorials are required to succeed on the single difficulty. It's ironic as an independent gaming company the developers of this game didn't account for positive in-game reviews that are often given indie games that focus on game design and less on graphics.

Game Dev Tycoon is a typical business-management game (well, it does say ‘tycoon’ in the title, so no surprise there), and making money is your primary goal. However, this time around you earn those piles of cash by living through the history of gaming, trying to recreate those legendary titles dear to all of us gamers.

The game is fairly cheap, but it’s rather short as well: you can easily reach the end in one afternoon evening. Not everything is perfect, there certainly still is some room for improvement, so I’m hoping we’ll see a patch that would address some lingering issues, but the game is still VERY fun and I cannot recommend it enough to everyone.

When you take into account low price, loads of fun and developers’ quite original approach to fighting piracy that became viral marketing effort, how can you not buy this game? I for one just couldn’t resist.

Not only it was extremely addictive and fun, but it actually made me realize I want to specialize as a game developer (I am a programmer). Now, what makes this game such a gem It's really challenging and your head will be consumed with the idea of making a perfect game (10, 10, 10, 10). Ideas like what genre, what target audience, what kind of gameplay, do I put more graphics, or more intelligence in it Do I want to support gamepad or cloud service Yep, just like that. There is no optimal or safe way through this game, the options in the creation of games are endless and anything can become success or failure. Only the middle part of the game might get slightly repetitive, apart from that it's an amazing and colorful simulation game with very intelligent math and algorithm background that will make you ROCK HAR-

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was really fun in my opinion. But some people say its a complete ripoff of Game Dev Story By Kairosoft, but i will get to that argument later.

First off the the premise. You are an indie developer working in your garage and your goal is to be the best game developer in the world! Well.. that's what i think, the game doesn't game a story to speak of, it may be bad to some people but i find it imaginative.
Secondly the Presentation. It's a basic design over the whole game. Basic guy, basic room and most importantly... basic car.
The problem is that the game has a bland appearance but that doesn't ruin its fun factor which leads me to the gameplay.
It is a simple make em up (yeah that's a real genre). Your goal is to make the best games ever and you got a decent amount of options to do it with. You first make a title and all that other stuff like audience, genre and custom engine. then you get into the making process, and i love how its so simple. You got to allocate certain time into game factors like sound and gameplay.

Now i am going into the controversial stuff with the comparison with Game Dev Story and Game Dev Tycoon. Okay i don't care if you like the portable game better than the pc version but i'm gonna get a lot of anger for this quote but... i like the pc game alot better. It's easier to pick up and play! In Game Dev Story I didn't know what I was doing for half the experience. In my opinion i didn't like the 16 bit style they went with. I just liked the basicness of the PC game, Now i would give Game Dev Story a 7.5 But...
The Final rating for the game is 9!
I just loved The tycoon one because for all the little stuff. The cheap reviews that were sometimes motivating, the game didn't kill me with the terrible song from the third stage of development of Game Dev Story and When you get to later parts of the game you.. yes you, felt like the best developer in the world. This has been Passive, signing out!

Learning from your mistakes is a large portion of tycoon games and, unfortunately this title did not do well in the department. Still, this game is definitely worth checking out. Expand

A great and well-made game. Will entertain you for hours on end. Many people get frustrated with the little things, for example, the game punishes you for repeating game genres, and repeatedly releasing sequels for the same series. They fail to realize that, the mechanics like that, make this game what it is. It is a realistic depiction of the gaming industry today.

The game itself is good but Im disappointed that it is a ripoff and they didn't add anything new in the game. I hope they can make some new things in the steam version of the game.

So, yes Game Dev Tycoon is a lot like Game Dev Story by Kairosoft, and it is obvious that it is somewhat modeled after it. That being said, I would call this a nice upgrade. It has more locations, more genres, and more overall. It doesn't bring anything massive new to the game from Kairosoft's classic for iOS, but it does bring nice little additions. There are some ideas in Game Dev Story that I liked, that are not in this game, but they are usually minor and not game-changing. This game brings new graphic style, new features, and a new feel to the classic. So if you're looking for something that takes Game Dev Story over the top, don't look here, but if you're simply looking for something to allow us to relive the joy of the previous game in a new way, you're in the right place, and it's a good spend of 8-10 USD.

A new favorite. I have played this game for probably 15-20 hours. This game really captivates and motivates the user to experience a real role play of sorts. The only complaint is a lack of proper feedback from the game on your games. Other wise, a truly unique experience, and one any casual gamer would love.

Though this 4-6 hour long game may have it's bugs, it still is very addictive and very entertaining for a few nights with friends making dirty titles for video games and for your company

Game Dev Tycoon is a really fun simulation game that brings me joy every time I play it. It's fun to be set in the seat of a game designer (which is a job I plan on doing), and think of some crazy ideas and turn them into games. The concept for the game is good, the execution is great, so why did I give it an 8? Well, simple:

It's fun to be set in the seat of a game designer (which is a job I plan on doing), and think of some crazy ideas and turn them into games. The concept for the game is good, the execution is great, so why did I give it an 8? Well, simple:

The game doesn't do a good job of telling you what you did wrong when you make a game. Reviewers give your game a score, much like I'm doing now, and tell you simple things like "Don't buy" if you score low, or "A must have!!" if you score high. These don't really tell you why you scored high or low, they just tell you what the game already says (since they give you a number 1 10 along with the quote). This makes it a little annoying when you're trying to make that hit game.

Next, the game also fails to give you a variety when it comes to the consoles. Each console released is related to a real-life console in some way, and has the same rises and falls as such. In reality, you could just memorize the game market since the 80's and know how everything will play out. Systems drop, other ones rise... It's all really cool for the first time, but the second time you play you realize there's no randomized aspect of it. It's all straight forward and it's forced to happen. If they added a gamemode to randomize the success of certain dud consoles, or to drop the success of other consoles, I feel the game would have a lot more re-playability. As it stands, the only re-playability the game has is to play with focusing on one console/type of consoles (e.g. going handhelds only, etc...)

In addition, the game seems to cap out kinda' early. It can take awhile to rise up in success for the 30 in-game years you have (which can be changed slightly in the options). This leaves you with little time to actually create a huge successful company by the end of the game's 'story mode'. Luckily the game will let you continue playing even after this point.

Another thing is how sometimes creating your game makes you feel empty. It leaves it up to your imagination to think of how the game would actually look, and doesn't give you much of an idea of how it turns out when you're just pulling sliders up and down. This is a minor thing, though, since it'd be hard to get into the player's head as to how the game would actually be. Something else is that besides adding extra stuff for a boost in your score, some add-ons are really ridiculous. Creating a spelling game on the Gameboy-clone with steering wheel support has no consequence at all.

Though that's pretty much it for the bad side. The good side of the game is that you have a lot of fun creating new ideas for games, and when you create a hit it feels so great. The game also lacks any sort of "coins" or "power" system, so you're not bound by a pay-to-win business model. The game also has a kind of charm to it, and when you get into the bigger offices you start to feel like you're a big-shot company. The game also has many different ways you can create games, ranging from picking different genres, creating and choosing your own game engines, creating the scale of the game (small, medium, large, AAA, etc), choosing the target audience, picking add-ons to make the game better, and even how the marketing. It does it's job creating a good video game creator simulator. I'd recommend buying it since it's not that much, and it also supports the real developers for future projects or updating the game itself.

You end up just pushing out game after game just to pay the rent. It quickly stops becoming about what kind of game you want to make into how much money you can make. Especially in the end game the review scores just get ridiculous. It's almost impossible to not over work your workers. If you over work them you get worse reviews and end up with nothing but 1-6s. There are some cool end game things you can do but I don't think a lot of people will waste the time and repetitiveness to get there. This game is below average. Remember 5/10 is average and I agave it a 4 so it is slightly below average. Expand

Shows potential. Could have been better. Startup and strategy is a great combination. Looking forward to the next one!

It's an OK time waster if you want to spend a lot of time on the wikis to figure out how to actually play. The game doesn't really tell you. (If you haven't played, my first line above is quoting/mocking the reviews you get for the games you create within GDT).

The idea isn't new, we already saw a great "Game Dev story", but graphics quality and many interesting features makes this game fun to play developing games, groving your company and trying to be number one, even if you realy can't understand sometimes what your customers want.

In short, this game is amazing. There haven't been any proper tycoon games in quite a while, and this game definitely fulfills the many great tycoon games of the past (RCT etc.). Also the game doesn't quite last that long. It's quite easy, and isn't very hard to master. After you beat it, you might not quite have a reason to play it again. Another reason this game needs modding. This game does, obviously, have many positives. The game pretty accurately depicts the history of gaming. It offers pretty unique gameplay. It let's you go from a singular developer to a huge company. You can even develop MMO's and create your own consoles. Creating consoles is pretty limited, however. Overall I'd give it a 9/10. Expand

If you like Game Dev Story and similar games then you will LOVE Game Dev Tycoon. I only wish that there would be expansions for it since when you are at the end game you can only restart the game, which is kind of sad since i really felt like building something important while playing. Anyway, please make a sequel for Game Dev Tycoon!!!

However, I don't really think Tycoon really wants to be more than ‘a glimpse' at video game production, and any attempt to comment on the industry from this dull, monotonous experience fails to hit its mark.
