This game has one exact way you need to progress or you are punished severely. You start off with so few options, yet only one very unintuitive way will result in not losing massive amounts of people on your first night. The first thing the game tells you is nobody has a home and you need coal. If you hyper-focus on either of those two things, people are going to die in droves. Even with a 24 hour decree to keep gathering resources through the night, you can't build enough homes in time. Even the build grid is stifling in its rigidity.

That this is a preset scenario that's more or less the same every time is baffling. Any other developer in the universe would've turned this kind of idea into much more of a roguelike experience with vastly different things happening every time, and not start off with such a ridiculously punishing one-way or death outset scenario.

It's hard for me to see the 10/10 reviews as anything but people who think that they've beaten some hard game, and feel this sense of accomplishment, but it's really all smoke and mirrors difficulty. Anyone can win the game if given the "right" set of things to do in the "right" order, and as such it feels like more of an extremely obtuse trial and error puzzle game than anything else.

Granted there were some things that took away from the immersion here and there (like when people are dying in your town at-60C but your scouts are out in -80 with no shelter and they can stay out indefinitely), but for the sake of exposure I think it is fine. Might be cool if they can add in theses elements in the sequel. Expand

    Enjoyable But Steep Learning Curve

First and foremost I'd like to say that turning the generator on is one of the most weirdly satisfying things you can ever do in a video game. Watching the burners come on, the smoke flowing from the top, the yellow to orange to red hue glowing up at the chimney, the noise it makes and generally watching the snow melt around the generator is honestly great. And that's like one of the first things you do in the game, it doesn't get any less satisfying.

The game itself is a mix of civilisation management and survival, survival in the sense that the cold is your enemy and it's not exactly one you can outrun. You want to see your people succeed, warm their homes through the worst possible times, make sure everyone is happy and cared for and fed.

You start off with a handful of survivors and you allocate them to the different resources, coal, steel, wood, and then you get buildings which can automate some stuff, as well as hunters and hot houses for food. There's a few things to manage and you'll get an idea of what you need to prioritise the more you play. Your people will come to you with needs to prioritise for you, but this might conflict with your goals at the time; being able to manage all of the above is the key to success, although most of the time, something needs to give.

I've completed the main game and the two scenarios after it and they do add a new element to the game, the scenarios that is. They provide you with a different play of playing the game from your original main story playthrough, and this is what I seek in a game. Not just more of the same. Same but different. The core gameplay remains the same but how you tackle the problem is different. It adds a lot of replay value to the game and makes it worth your time.

Prioritising what is the best research and where to send your scouting teams too is a must, once you get this down, the game becomes a lot easier.

However if you're picking this up for the first time or you're new to civilisation management games, you will likely have a hard time, I know I did. I might just not be good at this genre but it took me more time than I'd like to admit just to beat the main story, and I know there'll be others like me who think that it's impossible to survive the storm. But it can be done.

The game is a lot of trial and error, you'll know how you failed when you do and you'll take the preliminary steps to avoid this in future runs. I think that's what makes the game so special, you can actively feel yourself getting better at it once you understand how the buildings work and what research can offer you, as well as managing the Heat side of things.

Overall, even though the game has a steep learning curve, it's very satisfying when you win; the OST is genuinely phenomenal, especially when the storm kicks in and you're screaming for your people to just hold on. It's a great game and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the sequel. 7/10.

After completing the A New Home mission, I don't want to play the game again. I tried to go through The Arks scenario, but I have to repeat what I did in the previous mission. Micromanaging people's well-being is frankly boring and annoying. I persevered and continued, but soon got annoyed with the warning that the temperature would drop and destroy the seeds, so I couldn't play the game anymore. Nonetheless, I overcame it. But another ordeal is coming. I start to wonder why I have to endure trials harder than my life in a game.

Too much to worry about and people being impatient makes me impatient. Everything must be operated manually by the leader. There is no relaxation like SimCity, and it is close to micromanaging every moment. There is no fun in collecting and managing resources and worrying about welfare.

Frostpunk is a game where we try to survive in the midst of a winter apocalypse set in the
1800s, manage a city, and most importantly, manage an extraordinary crisis situation from
beginning to end. Although humanity foresaw the future of apocalypse storms, no one took
action against it. Therefore, a group of people or an organization has left the city to
establish massive generators near the mines to take precautions against these great storms,
and these generators can operate on coal fuel. As a result, a situation emerges where people
are struggling to keep the generator running in the midst of a harsh winter, and the generator
is also working to keep people alive. This is exactly where our survival story begins.

There are three main mechanics in the game: the first is the city-building mechanic, which is
almost the same as classic city-building games. Each constructed structure has a feature that allows
you to cope with major problems, and each structure has different costs. The second mechanic is
resource and human management; there is not much to say about resource management, as you have to
use resources in the right place, at the right time, and in the right way. The third mechanic is
passing laws, where we can contribute to certain places by giving up some things with certain laws
and decisions. This adds a decision-making mechanism to the game, which is one of the things I liked
the most, but these three mechanics have been applied very successfully.

As the core gameplay loop, we actually collect resources, grow the city, maintain the people's peace,
collect more resources, grow the city further, and try to keep more people alive. In fact, we are in
such a cycle, but the game gains new features as it becomes more difficult and technology develops,
and we make workplaces or send scouts to explore new areas. I found the game play and mechanics to be quite sufficient and enjoyable, especially the laws and decision-making, which allow us to bring this stupid society together with either an authoritarian oppressive regime or religion.

I won't talk much about the graphics; this game's graphics don't really have much credit for being good or bad, but they have good graphics, and the atmosphere is fantastic. As someone who has played "This War of Mine," they portrayed the helplessness and sadness of people's situation beautifully.

The music is really great, and there are music pieces representing the atmosphere and situation of each specific part of the game, and they start playing in a row as we progress. The orchestra team really deserves congratulations. But the best part is definitely the piece called "The City Must Survive" that plays towards the end; this event could only be put into music in this way. There is a mathematics to this music business, but I really don't understand how people can do this, and they deserve congratulations.

There are a few aspects of the game that I don't like. The replayability is low because even though there are multiple scenarios, finishing them takes a lot of time and effort. However, after playing the game a couple of times, you'll most likely finish it on the third try at the latest because the game has a low RNG system, which means there are very few random possibilities. This can make you lose interest in the game because if you're unlucky, your progress can be bad, and you may have to start over. But since all resources are in the same locations and amounts and the events that occur when we send scouts to different locations are almost the same (although different events can occur, the possibilities are very limited), the game teaches you very quickly and becomes very practical to play. This creates a significant difference between your previous plays because you learn the game very quickly.
If some events and resources had many possibilities and were random, people would start developing different strategies while playing the game, but they would most likely fail. However, if they played the game repeatedly over a longer period, they could learn it more entertainingly. As someone who has managed to survive in my second game, I can say that I don't have any intention of rating the game, but if I made a tier list, I would put it in the A tier, bro!

Great feel to building up an army of automatons to do the work in areas that too freezing for humans to risk.
Friendly to newbies, at least on Easy and Normal difficulties. My appreciation to the developers to two features that players can choose to use. The game allows you the choice to resume from a Saved game if you make an error, which reduces the stress of fearing that you have to start over if you make a mistake mid or late game. In other words, you can Save (or Load) at any time. Also, the game has Active Pause, meaning you can pause the game and study what is going on and them input your actions, then resume the game. The reduces the stress of feeling time pressure when you're trying to figure out what's happening. Of course, these are optional, so you can challenge yourself further by not doing these (i.e., only one Saved game at a time, don't use Active Pause).
The main campaign, scenarios, and DLC will keep me busy for some time, and then Frostpunk 2 will come out (and I'm looking forward to it!)
