They’ve either been held in cages or turned to evil through possession. With their magic evil will conquer and slowly it’s making the lands above and below water decay. The evil magic is unstable. Having escaped what’s going on it’s up to you to complete puzzles and match magical items in order to free the witches held, beat their captors and restore order to the world.
Free the Witch (2016) is one of Big Fish Games forgotten Free to Play games. It’s a simple and straightforward match 3 freemium game where instead of gems you match books, potions and blue magic energy balls. At certain points you can activate energy portals to more stages by collecting particular crystals. Eventually you encounter bosses that need to be defeated so you can free a witch. Every enemy you defeat and witch you rescue is logged in a scroll like diary. There are these nasty critters called erm…Gibbers who multiple if you don’t destroy them by matching. You need different tickets to open certain new areas or levels. Completing tasks like destroying a certain amount of Gribbers for example gives you a ticket that can only be used on the bonus Atlantis stages. One particular ticket can also be redeemed via a daily spinning wheel of bonus items. In between all the match 3 levels you also have puzzle levels where you have to complete a level within a particular set of moves. To be honest I had to consult an online walkthrough for these as they’re very tricky. Power-ups to use in levels or magical owls can be bought via the in-game store. There’s also an achievements system built into the game that offers power-ups or cash if an achievement is completed. The game looks bright as well as colourful and out of a lot of Big Fish’s match 3 games this particular one is the most accessible as items to help you are plentiful. Eipix Entertainment should pat themselves on the back as you can get quite far into the game without coming to a dead stop from a lack of lives. It feels like a game that can be progressed more compared to some others cough Gummy Drop! (2014) cough. Alas as so happens to most of these freemium games Free the Witch cannot be completed as the developers weren’t allowed to finish it. The third and last accessible world is also the most buggy with some weird glitches that hinder progress. The other main issue is that unlike other games of its time this is one freemium game that runs sluggishly. The lag is noticeable and can get irritating.
Eipix Entertainment had a nice time waster of a game but Big Fish Games decided not to continue with it. It’s a shame because it’s a fairly likable, enjoyable game helped by the ability to progress quicker than other freemium games the publisher has put out. Bugs aside there’s nothing offensive here. Unfortunately it’s also a shame as I cannot recommend the game due to it not be being completable. If you find a download of Free the Witch feel free to give it a try, just don’t expect a game you will finish as at this time of writing trying to do that would be a waste of time.…Full Review »
